The search for the perfect pair of slippers is an elusive one. Sure, you may have found a pair you like, but a few months later, a hole in the toe or a worn-out sole gives you pain as you mosey around the house.

Slippers are meant to protect my feet and regulate their temperature. They keep your feet dry and at the same temperature as the rest of your body. It’s like the best pair of slippers are the ones that you don’t even notice.

And, the best slippers – in my not-so-expert opinion – are always made with Merino wool!

So, being Merino wool gear, we decided to round up eight of our favorite Merino wool slippers so you can prep for the chillier parts of the year. From modern house shoes to fuzzy slides, there’s bound to be a style for everyone!

Merino Wool Slippers: What Should You Consider?

As I just said, finding your perfect pair of Merino wool slippers can be challenging. And, since some house shoes can be expensive, you’ll want to know what you get when you buy.

So, I’ve broken down some key categories to consider while shopping for the comfiest, coziest, best slippers for your feet! There are four categories: usage, comfort, warmth, and style. Let’s take a quick look at each!

Various Merino Wool Slipper Styles Side-by-side

I know it’s a simple question, but you should always ask yourself: “How will I use these slippers?” Sometimes, we see a wild feature or a sleek design and get caught up in the hype.

But remember why you needed slippers in the first place, whatever that reason may be, because it’s different for everyone. Are you going to wear them both inside and outside? What about on the couch? Would a simple pair of socks work instead?

My advice is to ignore the hype and focus on what you need for your daily life. And when you do that, things fall into place.

I like my Merino wool slippers to be supportive around the foot but still leave room to breathe. They should feel soft but firm on my feet, like a reassuring hug from a loved one. They shouldn’t feel like someone strapped cement blocks to my feet. It’s my home. I am entitled to comfort!

Luckily, Merino wool is the leader in the comfort world. With superfine fibers, your feet will feel like they’re embraced by a cloud. And, since Merino wool is breathable and odor-resistant, your slippers should stay dry and stink-free after multiple wears.

Three Merino Sheep

Treading barefoot in an early 20th-century house can feel like walking on an ice skating rink. I may be bundled up top, but if my pretty footsies are skin-to-skin against the vinyl, then I will be cold.

But, no matter how warm my slippers feel at first, they must be in the game for the long haul, meaning keep my nasty feet dry, too. If my feet sweat because of the excessive heat retention, I will get cold again.

And, just like Merino sheep who have to withstand harsh conditions, Merino wool slippers offer ultimate warmth by trapping warm air and managing your microclimate’s humidity. It’s just another remarkable property of Merino wool – thanks a lot, sheep!

Various Styles of Greys Outdoor Wool Slippers

For me, slippers should slip, end of story. I don’t like the style with heels because then I have to bend over and actually put them on like shoes, and when I take them off, I have to do the same. I’d rather kick off my slippers when I’m done with them, let them sit, and know they will be slipped back on when their time comes.

But my ankles get cold, so I switch to slipper boots during the winter months.

In your case, you may like clogs. You may like boots. Heck, you even want slipper socks. Who knows? You, that’s who! By discovering your style and needs, choosing your perfect Merino wool slipper will be much easier.

Editor’s Choice: Best Merino Wool Slippers

Kyrgies Tengries Walkabouts

Kyrgies Tengries Walkabout Merino Wool Slippers

Pros: Fantastic style & versatility | Unique slipper design | Indoor-Outdoor use

Cons: Sizing discrepancies | Keep uppers away from water

Traditional Merino wool slippers are famous for their warmth, versatility, and sheer comfort. You have to imagine that people have been making slippers with natural materials like wool felt for centuries, so the process is fine-tuned. One slipper that meshes this traditional craft with a modern design is the Kyrgies Tengries Walkabouts. Handcrafted by artisans in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (hence the brand, Kyrgies), these Merino wool slippers are my favorite!

The style reminds me of cozy cabin slippers. You can easily slip them on and off with the unique closure, and the design truly hugs your foot. Since these slippers are the “walkabout” version as opposed to the original ones, there is a rubber crepe-style sole for indoor-outdoor use. So, you get the extra grip from the sole texture, and the rubber also provides water resistance.

Despite the vulcanized rubber soles, you’ll still want to avoid getting the Merino wool uppers wet and dirty. As these are hand-felted, they could fall apart if you don’t correctly care about them. However, if you follow the essential cleaning tips, these slippers will last years!

To sum up, the Kyrgies Tengries Walkabout is a fantastic, comfy, versatile Merino wool slipper. No wonder they’re my favorite! Kyrgies offers this style for both men & women in plenty of satisfying colors, so be sure to check them out today!

Runner-Up: Best Merino Wool Slippers

Nootkas Astoria Wool House Slippers

Nootkas Astoria Wool House Shoes Womens Heather Gray

Pros: Classic slipper design | High-density cushioning | All-natural materials

Cons: Not great for narrow feet | May need to break in

If you’re looking for a solid, reliable pair of wool slides, look no further than the Nootka Astoria Slippers. Slip them on when it’s cold, and kick them off before bed. Nootkas handcrafts these slippers in Nepal using 100% mulesing-free New Zealand Merino wool. They have traveled worldwide to bring you ultimate comfort at home!

While these may look like any other pair of slippers, they have additional features to improve your slipper-wearing experience. For one, the padded wool midsole offers extra cushioning and support. Next, the suede sole performs well on carpet and wood floors (indoor use only) and ages well over time. Moreover, the zero-drop heel design gives you better posture and alignment, preventing any nagging injuries from coming back. These slippers genuinely do have it all!

Still, the slide-style slipper may only work for some. You may opt for a different style if you have narrow feet or cold ankles (yes, it’s a real thing). But, if you’re sold on these Nootkas Astoria slides – which have separate designs for men & women – be sure to head over to Nootkas to learn more!

Most Comfortable Merino Wool Slippers

Baabuk Mel Slippers

Baabuk Mel Slippers Bourdeaux

Pros: Expertly designed | Extra insole padding | Unique color options

Cons: Susceptible to wear & tear | Must clean with care

Another Merino wool slipper, another cloud of Merino, the Baabuk Mel Slippers are the most comfortable pair on this list! Like the Astoria slippers, Baabuk uses 100% New Zealand Merino wool handfelted in Nepal. Although, they are designed in Switzerland specifically to weather the snowy winters of the Alps. And if these slippers will keep you warm & comfy in a snowed-in cabin, they sure as heck will be warm & cozy at home.

Still, comfort is just as much about style since when you look good, you feel good! And, since these Baabuk Mel slippers come in 9 vibrant colors – including bright pink, bottle green, & classic vanilla – you can make a fashion statement around the house.

While all these factors – including the padded wool mid soles and latex outsoles – contribute to the comfort level, the amount of cleaning does not. As these wool slippers are handcrafted, they are more susceptible to wear and tear, so you should clean them often. Although this cleaning process can be meticulous, it will become a part of your daily routine with the proper Merino wool care products.

Finally, size them right if you’re interested in these Mel slippers. The molded heel cup may irritate if it is too big or small. And, while the low-heel height is best, Baabuk offers different height slippers (Kanga – slides, Yves – Boot). So, whatever style suits you, Baabuk has a slipper for you!

Most Stylish Merino Wool Slippers

Giesswein Vent Slippers

Pros: Replaceable footbed | Extra cushioning | Cinching cord

Cons: May wear down with outdoor use | Potential manufacturing defects

While traditional Merino wool slippers have unique vibes, I tend toward modern slipper designs. Something about them has a more versatile, functional style. My everyday go-to slippers, the ones I don’t mind showing off to house guests, are the Giesswein Vent slippers.

The one style feature I love is the cinch cord around the ankle. I can tighten these shoes on super chilly days when walking the dog or loosen them up in couch-potato mode. It’s a function you don’t usually get with other wool slippers, and I’m here for it.

And forget about style; these slippers were designed with high-performing features. As the “Vent” name suggests, they are super breathable. That way – combined with the waterproof rubber sole – you can wear it for indoor-outdoor use, and your feet will stay dry. Moreover, since there’s an exchangeable footbed and 18-mm heel blast for impact reduction, they’ll take a long time to wear out. Still, if you’re really beating them up, you will decrease their wear life.

Stylish, comfortable, and functional, the Giesswein Vents are an excellent choice for anyone looking to add fashion to their at-home look. I own a pair and trust the guy who eats, sleeps, and breathes Merino wool – you should get a pair, too!

Best Merino Wool Slipper For Outdoor Use

Greys Wool Outdoor Slipper

Greys Wool Outdoor Slipper Boot Navy

Pros: Fantastic style & versatility | Easy to slip on & off | Two other heights available

Cons: Too popular (often sold out) | Sizing discrepancies

If you’re constantly in and out of the house, gardening, picking up the mail, and walking the dog, you could use a solid pair of weatherproof house shoes. My favorite is the Grey’s Wool Outdoor Boot. Not only are they comfy and versatile, but they look so good your neighbors will be jealous.

And while I call these slippers, they are more ‘shoe‘ than ‘slipper.’ The waterproof, ultra-grippy rubber sole works just as well as a sneaker outsole. However, weather protection extends to the toe box with these slippers. So you can avoid stubbed toes. That’s a unique design feature if I’ve ever seen one!

My favorite style is the boot, as the pull-tab is easy to use, and I prefer a little extra warmth around my ankles. However, Greys offers these shoes in two lower heel heights if that’s more your speed: mule & slipper.

Although these are super popular, they take time to come by. So, if you see a size, color, and style that suits you, get them before they sell out!

Best Indoor-Only Merino Wool Slippers

Smartwool Hudson Trail Slippers

Smartwool Hudson Trail Merino Wool Slippers Blue

Pros: Comfy boot design | Rolltop for double-layer warmth | Blended fabric for durability

Cons: Only one color | Limited availability

If you’re a slippers-on-the-couch type, these cozy Hudson Trail slippers are a must-have. The roll-top boot design – in combination with the wool shell & liner – creates a warm, dry environment for your feet. And since they are a flexible knit, you can curl up on the couch any way you want!

When you get up to grab the whole carton of ice cream from the freezer, the thick padded outsole will cushion you all the way to the kitchen. A subtle feature of these Merino wool slippers that I love is the non-slip grip. It’s these little additions that make Smartwool gear so desirable.

Unfortunately, the Hudson Trail slippers are popular; many sizes and color options are out of stock. Hopefully, Smartwool releases more options this holiday season because I’ve seen my wife eyeing them!

Finally, these aren’t pure wool uppers. Instead, it’s wool-synthetic in a 9:1 ratio. The extra addition of synthetic material increases the slipper’s durability, so it doesn’t unravel on every crappy doorframe. It’s another minor feature that makes the Smartwool Hudson Trail Slippers one of our favorites. Get yours today!

Best Merino Wool Slippers For Travel

Bombas Gripper Slipper

Bombas Men's Gripper Slipper

Pros: Super cozy foot feel | Relatively affordable | Comes with travel bag

Cons: Not as ‘grippy’ as expected | May wear with heavy use

If you’re always on the go, it’s hard to pack a pair of felted slippers in your carry-on. So, the Bombas Gripper Slipper is one of the best options for comfort away from home.

This half-sock, half-slipper, all-amazing footwear is ultra-versatile. The interior has a soft, brushed lining and cushioned footbed, maximizing next-to-skin comfort. And, as these socks come with their own travel bag, it’s much easier to take them on the road, whether for work, family, or fun!

As the name suggests, these are a “gripper” slipper. But the grips aren’t as grippy as I’d expect. Even Bombas notes on their site that “they’re not magic” and “practice good coordination out there.” Or, you could be like me and barely ever leave the couch. You can’t slip if you don’t move!

Anyways, you’ve got to give these Bombas Gripper Slippers a try. They are a unique product that comes in several colors and will provide home-like comfort far away from home. And at such an affordable price, your feet wouldn’t forgive you if you passed them up!

Best Merino Wool Boot Slippers

Glerups Model G Boot

Pros: Top-notch warmth | Minimalist design | Multiple colors available

Cons: May initially shed | Potential manufacturing defects

My ankles get cold, like all the time. So, during the winter, I opt for a high-top Merino wool slipper like this Glerups Model G Boot. The minimalist, traditional slipper design is excellent for any situation. Heck, these could even be your slippers for the office!

And yes, these Merino wool slipper boots are expensive (one of the downsides of Merino wool). But there’s a reason: the high-quality materials. Glerups uses 100% pure natural wool in the upper, hugging the contours of your foot. In addition, the calf-skin soles (apparently tanned with vegetable oil) will give these slippers years of durability. It’s a classic design crafted with some of the world’s best materials, and you’re paying for it. That’s how it works!

Unfortunately, if you add these boots to your closet, you may have to deal with some initial shedding. This is common with felted uppers and actually increases the strength of the fabric in the long run. Still, it can be a site for sore eyes when you see your pricey new slippers shedding on the floor! But that’ll stop after a few wears, and everything should be good to go!

Final Note About Merino Wool Slippers

Putting on my Merino wool slippers at the end of the day signifies that I’m done; the day is over. I can turn my brain off and relax, knowing that I’m in the protection of my home.

Because, in essence, that’s what slippers are: protection for my feet. Protection from stepping on errant legos. Protection from an outdated heating system. Pure, comfy protection for my hard-working feet.

And that’s why Merino wool slippers are the best; they protect my feet and make them feel amazing!

The best part about testing out new Merino Wool Gear is that there is always a steady stream of new Merino Wool Gear. Today, a relatively new Merino wool shoe brand has gotten on our radar: Talent Jogger. So I decided to try them and see how they stand against some of our other favorite Merino wool shoes.

I’ll give you my initial thoughts fresh out of the box, wear them around for a few weeks, and then give you the good and the bad. It’s as simple as that! So, it’s time to lace up and start this Talent Joggers Merino Wool Sneaker Review!

Talent Joggers: Specs & Features

Talent Jogger Sneakers Specs and Features

Initial Thoughts

The first thing I noticed when I ripped open the box (literally) was how lightweight these shoes felt. Talent Jogger advertises them as 8 ounces., and breaking out my trusty kitchen scale; I recorded them at 8.5 ounces. It’s probably the shoelaces or a rounding error. Still, these sneakers are about as lightweight as it gets.

Talent Jogger Sneakers on Scale

In terms of the shoe construction, it’s your basic sneaker. However, unlike other Merino wool shoes I’ve tested, there is a soft, fuzzy texture outside, giving these Talent Joggers a unique style. The outsole material is malleable near the toes yet firm under the heel. In addition, the toe box and heel cup seem more structured than other wool sneakers, so there is a cleaner, less deflated look. Hopefully, they will be able to retain their shape over time.

Inside the shoe, there is a Merino wool outsole and lining. However, the form-fitting elastic band is the most interesting feature of the Talent Jogger. The band connects from the tongue to the shoe’s base, providing a better fit. Although I sometimes like to go sockless, I hope it doesn’t become a hot point for blisters.

Talent Jogger Interior Elastic Straps

Now, it’s finally time to try them on! They are so comfortable; you can feel the softness right away. Lacing them up, I can see the necessity of the reinforced lace loop seams. It’s a simple feature, but a nice touch for sure. Walking around, they feel flexible enough to minimize rub points, so I’m excited to put them to the test.

So far, I’m satisfied with my initial findings. It looks like a solid shoe that I could add to my collection. I also have some concerns; however, it’s just conjecture for now. After I test them, I’ll have a more honest assessment.

Wear Test

Typically when we test our Merino Wool Gear, we’ll wear it for three days, wash it, and give you the results. However, I thought the Talent Joggers deserved more “real-world” testing, especially since they are relatively new to the marketplace. So instead of three days of wear, I put them in my ‘shoe rotation’ and wore them on and off for about two months.

Talent Joggers sneakers being tied on park bench

At first, I decided to use them as my gym shoes, and boy, was that the right choice. These shoes performed exceptionally well for my standard cardio and weightlifting workouts. They even did well with plyometric exercises! After a few intense gym sessions, they got a little sweaty but still looked fresh after airing out the insoles.

After two weeks in the gym, I wore them outside for the first time down a hiking trail near my house. It was sunny out, yet there’s always a threat of mud in the woods. Luckily, my Talent Joggers and I stayed dry, both inside and out (and it was almost 90 °F). When I got home, I brushed off the dry dirt, aired them out, and they looked just as good as new. The bottoms were the only part to get dirty!

After about 10-12 wears in the gym, around town, and in the woods, the Talent Joggers performed better than I expected. There were comfortable (even without socks) while staying clean and odor-free throughout the month. They were still so clean at the end of our test that we didn’t even have to throw them in the laundry!

Talent Jogger Bottoms Before and After

Merino Wool Shoe Comparison

Before I get into my likes and dislikes from the ‘Wear Test,‘ it’s important to put the Talent Joggers directly against some of our other favorite Merino wool sneakers. After all, our goal is to help you find the best Merino wool gear for your lifestyle. And what better way to do this than a little comparison shopping?

Talent Joggers Sneaker Comparison to Allbirds and Woolloomooloo Shoes

As you can see above, the Talent Joggers have slightly more structure than my worn-out Allbirds Wool Runners (which we consider a classic Merino wool sneaker). They don’t have the Talent Jogger’s structured heel cup and toe box. However, this permits the Wool Runners to slip on and off more easily. As for Talent Jogger, it’s better to unlace and retie them with each wear.

Like the Allbirds Mizzles waterproof coating, the Talent Jogger also uses a protection finish: RUCO-GUARD®. This coating protects the exterior wool fibers from losing their natural properties, especially while in the washing machine. In addition, it weatherproofs the shoes, keeping dirt, dust, and grime out of the fibers. So, I probably shouldn’t have been too worried about mud in the first place!

And, unlike Woolloomoolloo Belmont Shoes with a 3D-knitted pattern, the Talent Joggers have more of an unbrushed wool texture inside and out. This plush lining leads to top-level comfort. Although, all the shoes discussed are on that same level of comfort. And that’s probably why they all hover around the $120-$160, depending on season or sale. So no matter which shoe works for you, they are all in the same league regarding quality, comfort, and price.

What I Liked

After a month of testing the Talent Joggers Low-Tops on and off, I’m ready to give my not-so-expert opinion on these shoes. There are several aspects of their style, comfort, and design that I’ve come to like and value. Let’s take some time to dig deeper into each.

Unique Style

Three different styles and colors with Talent Jogger Merino Wool Sneakers

I’d be lying if I said I was immediately fond of the fuzzy texture of these shoes. It’s not that they looked weird, but they weren’t my style. However, the look grew on me as I wore them throughout the month. It does look well with almost any athletic outfit but still goes well with casual streetwear.

Moreover, the ones I tested were a light Sky Blue, but there are plenty of other colors to choose from. They have classic all-white and all-black options and your standard dark gray. Moreover, if you like a touch more flair, you can even try out the lavender pair.

360° Comfort & Performance

One of the biggest selling points of Merino wool shoes, in general, is their comfort. However, the Talent Joggers truly take this comfort beyond the competition. The plush Merino wool lining, soft Orthopedic insole, cushioned sole, and elastic tongue provide 360° comfort around my foot. It’s like a cloud of Merino wool hugging my feet all day!

Hand in hand (or should it be foot in foot) with comfort comes performance. With or without socks, the tight fit reduces rub points where blisters can develop. So, whether traveling abroad, running errands, or hitting the gym, you can do so in comfort and style.

Outsole Design

I thought something unique about this shoe that should get more shine is the specialized Hive-Impact™ outsole. The rubberized EVA material is lightweight and cushioning, while the bottoms have a functional grip. Yet the real magic of these outsoles lies where the eyes can’t see.

Talent Joggers Hive Impact Outsole Design

As you can see from the image, the toe area is more flexible, offering more room for movement. And the waffle-like structure toward the midsole and heel is more rigid and lightweight. These high-impact areas are more cushioned, offering even more comfort. It’s truly an ingenious outsole design!

Areas to Improve

Still, despite punching up its weight in the top tier of Merino wool shoes, there’s always room for improvement. So, we’ve come up with three ‘downsides‘ to these shoes, as you should always understand the full story. These are not necessarily negative things, just aspects I observed during testing.

Hard To ‘Slip On’ While Laced

Talent Joggers Laced Up

I like to keep my shoes tied loosely and slip them on for easy access out the door. And if I need to tighten them, so be it. However, the tighter fit of the Talent Jogger doesn’t offer that ‘slide-on-slide-off‘ ability. To do so, you must tie them loose and not thread the laces through the top hole.

This qualm may sound petty, but it’s still worth noting. The good news is that the lace structure, especially with reinforced seams, does a great job of keeping everything tight. Still, it’s best to keep them unlaced so they maintain their clean look.

Longevity Concerns

Initially, I raised concerns about the long-term durability of these Talent Jogger Merino wool sneakers. I couldn’t put my finger on it then and still can’t. Yet these shoes passed all the tests, and I saw no issues with their durability.

But even with all the evidence in favor, I still have concerns (although less concerned) with this sneaker’s longevity. The real reason I have apprehension is personal, as I tend to beat up my sneakers, and I’m afraid I’ll beat these up too. Still, I’ll get 2-3 good years out of them with proper care. You’ll have to check back then to see!

Price Point

Are these Talent Joggers on the expensive side? Yes. But all Merino wool shoes are costly; you’ll be paying $100+ for any good pair. It’s one of the main downsides, in general, of Merino wool gear. However, are these shoes worth the price? Yes, they are. They are high-quality, comfortable, versatile, and stylish. So, I would love to see Talent Jogger drop the price tag (we all would), but I’d be lying that they aren’t worth every penny.

Final Note About Talent Jogger Sneakers

Talent Joggers Sneakers with Shoe Brush and Wool Wash

After dozens of wears, we can give the Talent Joggers our seal of approval. They are a new player Merino wool shoe game and deserve a place with the best of them. They are soft, comfortable, and high-performing and have a unique style that sets them apart. I’m glad we got to test them out, and I hope to see more from Talent Joggers in the future.

I’ve been excited about testing out Woolloomooloo Shoes for a while now. When we started Merino Wool Gear, they were a new name in the sneaker game. And due to their high-quality materials and innovative approach to manufacturing, they have rapidly made a name for themselves. They create Merino wool sneakers, slip-ons, slides, platforms, and more!

This review will focus on their flagship creation, the Merino wool Belmont shoes (in jet black). I’ll give you my initial thoughts fresh out of the box, wear them for a few days, then put them through the laundry. Finally, I’ll provide some insight into what I liked while testing these shoes and some areas to improve. And who knows? You may want to grab a pair by the end, too!

Specs & Features

Woolloomoolloo Shoes Belmont Sneaker Specs

Initial Thoughts

The first thing I noticed after ripping the package open was how lightweight these shoes felt. They are about the same weight or an ounce heavier than Allbirds Wool Runners, yet have a more stable structure and shape.

Woolloomooloo Belmont Shoe and Allbirds

They look and feel more like traditional sneakers due to the digitally-knitted Merino uppers. It’s different from the conventional fluffy wool texture you may see with other brands that may boil their wool. Instead, you get a shoe similar to the Nike Flyknit collection but lighter weight and more odor resistant.

The elastic laces are a nice touch, too. Slipping them on and off should be easy, and the signature curls provide a unique look. Although I hesitate about how the laces will hold up in the long run, I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself yet.

Woolloomooloo signature elastic laces

Alright, it’s about time to try them on. I immediately noticed the soft interior feel when I first slid them on my foot (with no socks). There was no scratching, irritation, or rubbing, only soft Merino wool. Moreover, the thick soles and the wool insole offer plenty of comfort and arch support. I wouldn’t classify them as orthotic shoes, but they will keep my feet comfy no matter how far I walk.

After comparing them with other shoes throughout my ‘Initial Thoughts,’ it’s clear that these Woolloomooloo Belmont Sneakers are in a class of their own. The lightweight, comfortable, and unique digital knit design is unparalleled in the Merino wool shoe world. Let’s hope they stand up to the rigors of our three-day wear test.

Three-Day Wear Test

There’s nothing worse than a shoe review where you know the reviewer hasn’t even worn the shoes! So, testing the Woolloomooloo Belmonts in different situations, weather, and outfits is important. Over three days, I kept a little diary about my experience with these shoes. I tried to wear them in various circumstances so that you can better understand how they will fit into your life. Enjoy!

Day 1: Comfort at Work

Since I typically walk to work, and our dress code is a relaxed business casual, I decided to test these Belmonts in the office first. So, I slipped them on with socks, black chinos, and a gray polo, then set off for my day. The outfit looked sleek and casual but professional enough for a business setting.

Woolloomooloo Belmont Shoes With Black Chino Pants

Throughout the day, I barely even noticed that I was wearing new shoes, which is exactly what I was looking for. My feet didn’t overheat or experience any irritations, which is hard to say about typical office shoes. Moreover, it rained on my walk home, and these shoes performed well. Although, my socks were slightly moist toward the end. So, while these are marketed as water-resistant, I wouldn’t call them waterproof.

When I finally got out of the rain and took them off, a simple whiff test showed no lingering foot smell yet! Let’s see if this is still the case throughout our wear test.

Day 2: Performance Around Town

After successfully wearing these Woolloomooloo shoes to work, I decided to give them a go around town. You know, you’re typical Saturday out and about. Here are some of the small activities I did that day:

  • Yoga class at the gym (plus a light lift)
  • Outdoor farmer’s market
  • Grocery store trip
  • A couple hours in the park

Again, I barely noticed these shoes throughout the day, but there were two instances worth noting. First, when I was at the gym, I realized these would not be my go-to cardio shoes. The loose elastic laces (even when tied) didn’t perform well running on the treadmill. Also, my feet started getting sweaty towards the end of my time in the park. It was 85 °F outside, though, so my feet would still sweat even if I wore slides.

And after the day was over, I did another whiff test. This time, there was a hint of foot odor. However, after airing them out for an hour, I rechecked them, and they smelled fresh again.

Day 3: Questionable on the Trail

The only other place I could think of testing these shoes was in the great outdoors. So, I threw on these Belmonts (without socks) and decided to walk the dogs around a nice three-mile trail around my neighborhood.

Everything was going well at first; no issues with comfort or sweat. But, once I started to get onto rockier terrain, things went a little south. I was walking with the laces untied (first mistake), so I was getting a lot of rubbing on my heel as I navigated the uneven ground. Once I actually tied the laces, though, the discomfort went away. Moreover, many little stones were getting stuck in the bottom of the shoe. I even had to stop and pry them out a few times.

Needless to say, I don’t think these sneakers would be great for trail shoes based on their outsole design and lace system.

Laundry Test

If you have read one of our long-form reviews, you know our laundry test is one of the most essential testing elements. Wearing the Merino wool gear is excellent, but if it falls apart in the washer, there may be an issue.

So for these Belmont sneakers, we’ll follow the precise laundry instructions by Woolloomooloo, and hopefully, they are still good as new!

Woolloomooloo Belmont Sneakers and Laundry Products

Before I go further, it’s important to note that these sneakers didn’t need to be washed. They didn’t smell and weren’t that dirty (other than some dog hair). Still, I removed the insoles, undid the laces, and washed them because it’s a good test of durability and longevity.

According to Woolloomooloo’s care instructions, the shoes are machine washable with cold water on a gentle cycle. They say to use the wool cleaner as needed, so I added Outback Gold Wool Wash (about a cap-full in each). As for the insoles, Woolloomooloo recommends handwashing with a few drops of wool cleaner, so that’s exactly what I did!

Woolloomooloo Belmont Shoes Before And After Washing

As you can see from the image, there isn’t any significant difference before and after putting them in the laundry. It took me about 2-3 minutes to watch each insole, and they dried out in around 3-4 hours. As for the shoes, they laundered well and took about the same time to dry. And while I noticed some slight pilling in the uppers, it’s to be expected with any Merino wool shoes. Also, the logo on the insoles wore out, but that is simply aesthetic.

Despite these minor discoveries, the Woolloomooloo Belmont shoes passed the laundry test. I wouldn’t say they look ‘good as new’ because that would be a stretch. However, they are as close to new as I’ve seen (and I have done many of these reviews). They didn’t rip, tear, lose shape, or have any defects. And that’s all I ask for in a pair of washable Merino wool shoes.

Editor’s Note: I don’t know if you can wash the elastic laces or not, but I suggest removing them before cleaning. Although, their unique design makes it challenging to lace them back up. You’ll have trouble your first few times, but Woolloomooloo has published a solid how-to video if you need assistance.

What I Liked

After several days of testing in different scenarios and a successful laundry test, the Woolloomooloo Belmonts earned a spot in my daily rotation. They have a lot of unique features that set them apart from their competitors. Let’s expand on some aspects that won me over for good.

A Pair Or Jet Black Woolloomooloo Belmont Shoes

The Elastic Laces

I was initially hesitant about the elastic lace system, but it grew on me throughout the testing process. The shoes were so easy to slip on and off, which is always good since I’m always in a rush. And they offer such a cleaner, sleeker look than traditional floppy laces.

Are they the perfect shoelaces? No. But are they the perfect laces for this shoe? Absolutely.

Top-NotCH Comfort

The all-day comfort level of these Woolloomooloo Belmonts is top of the industry. They are flexible where they need to be for better day-to-day performance. The thick outsoles offer plenty of cushion to keep you going pain-free. I had no leg or back pain during testing, which is always a plus. They are genuinely one of the comfiest Merino wool sneakers I’ve ever tried.

Moreover, if you have unique foot needs like orthotics, you can always use insoles instead of those provided. Although you won’t get the same level of odor resistance. So, it’s best to keep your socks on in this case.

Professional Design

Look, these are now my go-to ‘dapper sneakers.’ They have a professional elegance that I have yet to see before. Not only do they look good with athletic wear, but they look just as fitting in business casual attire. They would also be great for anyone working on their feet all day.

Woolloomooloo has also engineered every aspect of these shoes with ultimate performance in mind. Much of this style is due to the digitally-knit uppers instead of traditional boiled Merino wool uppers. This level of craftsmanship and expertise truly puts the Belmonts in their own category.

Various Colors Of The Woolloomooloo Belmont Shoes

Finally, I love the black-on-black the best of all the color options. After testing them, I’m thinking about grabbing another pair to match more of my wardrobe. I’m leaning toward the white-on-white for a more classic look, but I am drawn to the mustard color for some extra pop. Whichever color I choose, I know they’ll still have the same sleek, professional design that I’ve come to love.

Areas to Improve

As with our Merino wool gear reviews, these products always have room to develop and evolve. It’s just as important to highlight the areas of improvement as the positive aspects of each piece of gear.

I’m not saying the following growth areas are negatives, but aspects worth noting as I tested the Woolloomooloo Belmonts.

Maintenance & Care

The care process can be cumbersome, depending on how you use these shoes. As you can see from our laundry test, they clean up well, yet you need to have wool cleaner available, and it takes time to hand wash the insoles.

Moreover, I noticed that the all-black style picks up much dirt, debris, dust, and pet hair. I gave digitally-knit uppers a quick sweep with a soft shoe brush at the end of each day to keep them fresh, but it can be time-consuming if you’re in a rush.

The extra maintenance isn’t necessarily a negative, but part of the experience of wearing these shoes. They are expensive (which I’ll talk about in a bit), so you must take proper care of them to truly get the best value. Although, you may need to adopt some new cleaning habits, as I did.

Woolloomooloo Belmont Shoes Outsole Design

Outsole Design

When I walked on the trail, I was getting lots of small stones and debris stuck in the gaps on the outsole. The design is excellent if you wear them indoors or in the city, and they even provide a lot of extra grip in wet conditions. However, if you’re anywhere with small little stones, it will get annoying to pick them out all the time.

Price Tag

Listen, there’s no getting around it; these shoes are expensive. But when you look at Merino wool shoes, they fall into a similar price range as other pairs.

Compared to these other shoes, you get a digitally-knit upper that holds its shape, an easy-access elastic lace system, and tons of comfort with the Woolloomooloo Belmonts.

And, as long as you take care of them properly, they are 100% worth the high price tag.

ShoePrice
Allbirds Wool Runners$110
Woolloomooloo Belmonts$150
Giesswein Merino Knit$150
Baabuk Sky Woolers$151
*Note: All prices are seasonal and subject to change.

Final Verdict: Woolloomooloo Belmont Shoes

And there you have it, our complete review of the Woolloomooloo Belmont Shoes. They are a high-quality product that definitely deserves a spot in my daily shoe rotation. Not only are they lightweight and comfy, but they look good.

If I gave them an actual grade, it would be an A- considering everything discussed. If anything, they are for sure worth checking out. So, head to Woolloomooloo and grab a pair today!

Are you looking for a new pair of sneakers? Maybe some slip-ons for that comfy business casual look? Lucky for you, no matter which shoe style you prefer, there’s also one made from Merino wool. And that’s why I’m here: to analyze and review the best Merino wool shoes for men!

From athletic sneakers from Giesswein to the classic Allbirds lace-ups, Merino wool’s popularity is growing in the footwear world. So, I’ll explore ‘the recipe’ for the best Merino wool shoes before diving into our top wool shoes! And as always, I’m just here to guide you in the right direction with Merino wool knowledge and expertise. It’s ultimately up to you to determine which pair of Merino wool shoes best suits your needs.

Merino Wool Shoes: The Recipe

Listen, I may not be the best cook in the world, but I like to think I’ve deconstructed the recipe when it comes to Merino Wool Gear. It comes down to four simple principles: quality, style, comfort, and care.

And we’ll explore each one – in recipe form, of course!

1. Start with a Base of Quality Merino Wool

Like any recipe, your shoes are only as good as the quality of your ingredients. In our case, the main ingredient for each one of these shoes is Merino wool.

So, how can you tell good wool from bad wool? Well, it’s a little more challenging than you may think. Your feet should feel comfortable with good wool, and their temperature should be regulated. However, you may feel some itchiness with bad wool, and your feet may feel too hot. This doesn’t always translate well in print, so I’ll do my best to provide my expert opinion on each shoe’s quality.

Note: While we are focused on Merino wool, several other ingredients play a significant role in a shoe’s quality. You’ll want to make sure the soles, laces, inserts, and seam construction all work together. Sometimes this means changing the shoe style you are looking for, and other times that may mean going for a non-wool sneaker.

2. Mix In Two Cups Of Personal Style

No matter how high-quality the shoe, you’ll never get the whole Merino experience if it doesn’t match your personal style. Luckily, most brands have dozens of colors options within their shoe collections. Many even release limited-time color schemes, so it’s essential to watch if you have a specific hue in mind.

Baabuk Sky Wooler Variations

Pictured: Baabuk Sky Wooler Sneaker

Pro Tip: When searching for the perfect shoes, if you don’t like the neutral color options (gray, black, tan, navy, etc.), you probably won’t like the vibrant color options either.

Yet, color isn’t the only style factor in your decision process. You’ll have to incorporate the overall design into your wardrobe. Sometimes, this means sacrificing the “crazy” sneakers for a more practical slip-on. Do you really want a $100+ pair of shoes sitting around because they only match two outfits?

In other words, the shoes you choose should match your life, not the other way around.

3. Finish with 24/7 comfort

I think Merino wool shoes are the most comfortable shoes on the market. However, you may think my opinion is a little biased. I completely understand.

But the truth still stands that no matter the weather outside, Merino wool will keep your feet comfy inside. Why, though? It has a lot to do with the fine fiber diameter and excellent moisture management properties. I won’t get into too many details here, but you can read more about the benefits of Merino wool if you’d like.

Moreover, these aren’t just summer shoes. There are plenty of options listed below that work well in wet, muddy, and wintery conditions. So, your feet will be warm and comfy all year long!

4. ‘Stir’ With Care Every Month

To get the most out of your Merino wool shoes, you’ll have to take good care of them. While many of the listed options are machine washable, don’t always assume that’s the correct way.

Merino Wool Shoes Care Tips

  • Always follow manufacturer recommendations (or you may void any warranties)
  • Spot clean or wash every month or so
  • Make sure to remove laces before washing
  • Use a delicates bag in the washer
  • Never use the dryer (unless the manufacturer says otherwise)

Best Overall Men’s Merino Wool Shoes

Allbirds Wool Runners

100% ZQ Merino Uppers | 12+ colors/styles | Sizes: 8-14 (whole) | Price: $$$$

Allbirds Wool Runners

Pros: Minimalist style | Maximum comfort | Ultimate sustainability

Cons: Tread issues | Must launder with care

In the Merino wool shoe world, Allbirds still reign supreme. Their staple shoe, the Wool Runner, is still one of my favorites. It just has a fantastic fit and foot feel. Honestly, when I wear mine, I just feel better overall!

Anyways, personal feelings aside, these shoes are built with two things in mind: comfort and sustainability. The comfort stems from the 100% ZQ Merino wool uppers and cushioned midsole. Moreover, Allbirds uses premium, eco-friendly materials to enhance the comfort level. As for sustainability, we’ll touch more on it later in this piece.

I love the simple, minimalist construction when it comes to the design. It’s the “right amount of nothing,” making it versatile. You can wear your wool runners for work meetings, coffee dates, and even to a wedding! And in 12+ colors, with new season colors trickling in, I’m sure you’ll find the perfect color for you.

Finally, I know you probably think I’m biased here. Still, the facts are that Allbirds Wool Runners are the top Merino wool shoe (in my opinion, of course). If you don’t believe me, check out celebrities like Ashton Kutcher & Matthew McConaughey rocking these comfy, stylish shoes.

Best Merino Wool Running Shoes

Merinos Men’s Lace-ups

~100% Merino uppers | 10 colors combos | Sizes 8-13 (wide availabile) | $89

Pros: 24/7 Comfort | Extremely lightweight | Surprisingly durable

Cons: Narrow width | Some sizing discrepancies

Listen, I’ve tried my fair share of Merino wool shoes. As far as overall fit, comfort, and style go, I always put Merinos near the top of the list. There is just something about these sneakers that makes it feel like I’m walking on a cloud.

The feature I – and other Merino lovers – is the pure comfort of these wool sneakers. They are super lightweight (less than a pound), and the soft Merino wool provides a luxurious ‘foot feel.’ And since they are odor-resistant, I can leave the socks at home in the summer for a more airy feel.

Still, at Merino Wool Gear, we want you to understand the complete picture. So, it’s important to note that some users have reported sizing inconsistencies and narrow widths. Luckily, Merinos offers wide versions of their lace-ups (denoted with a ‘w’). Still, consult their fit charts or contact them if you are in-between sizes.

Overall, Merinos sneaker’s classic style goes with nearly every outfit! Honestly, they even look decent with a pair of work pants and a polo. So, you don’t have to bring an extra pair of sneakers when you hit the gym after work! Grab on the dozens of colors of Merinos shoes today!

Best Value Merino Wool Shoes For Men

Urban Fox Parker Wool Sneakers

70/30 Wool-Polyester Uppers | 6+ colors/styles | Sizes: 7-13 (whole) | Price: $37.99

Pros: Super affordable | Extremely soft foot-feel | Perfect for deck and patio use

Cons: Questionable quality | ‘Dad Shoe’ design

If you’ve noticed by now, Merino wool shoes can sometimes run on the pricier side. However, there are quality, affordable options for those running on a tight budget. One such pair is the Urban Fox Parker wool sneakers.

Besides being less than half the cost of some of its competitors, these wool shoes are surprisingly comfortable. And while the 70/30 wool/polyester blend isn’t the most top-shelf material, it still gets the job done.

Unfortunately, these shoes aren’t the most fashionable pair on our list. Honestly, the style may be why they cost less. I know it’s subjective, but they look like your standard pair of dad shoes. And for some people, that may be the style they seek. However, I’m probably not going to wear them past the backyard. Still, they work just as great as any Merino wool house shoe on the market.

Overall, it’s important to note that this Merino sneaker “value” pick is not simply due to price. These sneakers have fantastic comfort, color selection, and quality that rivals higher price tags. So, if you want a pair of Merino wool shoes that don’t break the bank, the Urban Fox Parkers are probably your best bet!

Best Merino Wool Slip Ons

LeMouton Men’s Wool Casual Slip Ons

100% Merino lining, 73% Merino outers | 6 colors | Sizes: 8-12 (whole) | Price: $89

Pros: Padded Merino wool insoles | Easy to care for (machine washable) | Packable & flexible

Cons: Odd logo placement | Long-term durability concerns

A quality pair of slip-ons make a perfect addition to any wardrobe due to its versatility. You can wear them with more professional outfits, and they also look fitting while rocking a pair of sweatpants. And when it comes to Merino wool slip-ons, we have a favorite: the LeMouton Casual Wool Slip-On.

So, what makes LeMouton different than all the other Merino wool slip-ons on the market? Eh, not too much. The only way to describe them, I guess, is the fantastic foot feel. The padded wool inserts and 100% Merino lining add to the overall comfort factor. However, if you plan on trekking more than a few miles a day, you may want to opt for their lace-ups instead.

The only real downside is the odd logo design. Some of the color combinations are too loud, especially when you consider the simplicity of the shoe design. For example, these gray shoes have a bright blue logo. It’s not a major issue per se, but make sure that both the shoe and logo color match your style.

The LeMouton Casual Slip-Ons make for a comfy, stylish pair of Merino wool shoes. They are easy to launder, super flexible, and can even squeeze into the tight spaces in your suitcase. Grab a pair (or two) today!

Best Merino Wool High Tops

Allbirds Wool Runner-up Mizzles

100% ZQ Merino uppers | 8+ colors | Sizes: 8-14 (whole) | Price: $145

Allbird W

Pros: Carbon neutral | High-top splash resistance | Water-repellent finish

Cons: Fit inconsistencies | Some pilling experienced

This is the second time Allbirds has made our list with the Wool Runner-Up Mizzles. They are basically the high-top variation of their wool runners meaning they come with exceptional comfort and style. And as I mentioned previously, they are sustainable and eco-friendly.

In fact, according to Allbirds, the Wool Runner-Up Mizzles are carbon neutral. But how? Initially, these high-tops have a carbon footprint of 14.5 kg CO2e (the equivalent of driving just under 50 miles). However, Allbirds offsets this impact by reinvesting in projects that sequester carbon. Thus, bringing the overall environmental effects back to zero.

And thanks to ZQ Merino, bio-based water repellent, sugarcane-based insoles, recycled shoelaces, and so much more, Allbirds is genuinely one of the most sustainable clothing brands, Merino wool or not.

Beyond sustainability, these Merino wool shoes work great with various outfits, especially with dozens of colors and style options. Although, if you do grab a pair of the Runner-Up Wool Mizzles, you may experience some initial pilling. Still, that’s nothing to worry about if you care for your Allbirds properly.

Best Merino Wool Hiking Shoes

Giesswein Wool Cross X Men

100% Merino lining (TPU sole & EVA sole) | 4 colors | Sizes: 7-15 (whole) | Price: $160

Giesweinn Wool Cross X Men

Pros: 4-season outdoor use | ‘Micro-Grip Sole’ for traction | Flexible yet supportive

Cons: Expensive | Limited availability

At first glance, these may not look like your typical hiking shoes. But the sad truth is, 100% Merino wool shoes don’t always fare well in the rugged outdoors. However, there are a few all-terrain shoes with a 100% Merino wool lining, and my favorite has to be the Giesswein Wool Cross X.

If I could describe these shoes in one word, it would be ‘performance.’ The micro-grip soles work well on the uneven terrain of the backcountry. Plus, Giesswein uses a strategically cushioned sole to improve balance and stability. We haven’t even gotten to the best part yet: the Merino wool!

The wool lining itself aids in moisture management while you’re out on the trail. And if you’re just strolling around town, you could even rock these shoes without socks since they are odor-resistant. Still, you should air them out at the end of the day.

But, as you guessed it, the Giesswein Wool Cross X does have one downside: price. Did you really think all those features would come cheap? Still, even with their price, these Merino wool hiking shoes sell out fast. So, if you are interested, you better hurry up and check them out soon!

Most Stylish Wool Sneaker

Baabuk Sky Wooler

100% Portugese wool upper & inner | 9 colors (w/ seasonal) | Sizes: 36-46 (EU) | Price: $139

Baabuk Sky Wooler

Pros: High-Quality wool | Excellent overall style | Seasonal pattern releases

Cons: Limited availability | Shape retention over time

Wool sneakers aren’t just about lightweight runners and slip ons. As you’ll see, wool plays a role in nearly every shoe style. And in my not-so-expert opinion, the most stylish out of all these options is the Baabuk Sky Wooler. And although it’s made with Portuguese wool and not your standard Merino, it still deserves a spot on this list.

The wool uppers and inners are based on a centuries-old wool fabric called burel. Portuguese shepherds would use burel to protect against the elements as they watched over the flock. And the Sky Woolers take this ultimate weather protection and bring it to your feet! Plus, there is a Merino wool lining for extra warmth. Pretty cool, right?

Yet, as the title suggests, we love the overall style that Baabuk achieves with the Sky Woolers. They have that classic high-top look (in 10+ colors) that goes with various outfits. Still, I would stuff newspapers or inserts into these shoes to maintain their shape when you are not wearing them.

To sum up, these wool sneakers are naturally water repellent, durable, and keep your feet toasty. They are a perfect pair of winter sneakers, wool or not. So, make sure to find the color combination that fits your style. Trust me; your feet will thank you.

Best Men’s Merino Wool Boots

Giesswein Leather Merino Boot Men

360° Merino wool lining | 3 colors | Sizes: 7-15 (whole) | Price: $$$$$

Giesswein Leather Merino Boot Men

Pros: Top-shelf Nubuck leather | Non-slip rubber sole | Waterproof & warm

Cons: Most expensive pair on list | Hard to find ‘comfort window’

We typically don’t see Merino wool boots. It’s just the nature of the material. However, many innovative brands like Giesswein understand that Merino has the opportunity to have its place in the winter boot world. And that combination of innovation and quality has led them to the Merino Leather Boot.

As with Giesswein’s products, these Merino Leather boots are made with top-shelf materials. The 100% Merino lining and footbed use ethically-sourced wool. On top of that, the Nubuck leather is top-grain, making it much more durable and protective from the elements. Finally, the soles are made from a lightweight EVA polymer so that you can trek the extra mile.

Wool and leather aside, these winter boots have everything you need. They are waterproof, comfortable, and have a non-slip sole for those extra icy winter days. Moreover, they come in different color varieties and are surprisingly stylish. I’m a fan of the Timberland-like camel option, but they also come in black and brown if that’s more your speed.

As you can imagine, these boots are expensive. However, their price is similar to some other non-wool winter boots. Plus, as Giesswein is a self-proclaimed “Merino Wool Innovator,” it’s safe to say these boots are well worth the price.

Best Merino Wool Indoor Slippers

Nootkas Felted Merino Astoria Slipper

Felted Merino wool (w/ suede sole) | 3 colors | Sizes: 8-12 (whole) | Price: $89

Pros: Fantastic temperature regulation | Barefoot feel (suede sole) | Minimalist design

Cons: Indoor use only | Expensive (for slippers)

You didn’t think we’d create a Merino wool shoe list without adding a pair of house slippers, right? There are several options out there, but my favorite has to be the Nootkas Astoria slipper.

These Nootkas house shoes aren’t that unique at first glance, but d*mn, are they comfortable! The hand-felted uppers use high-quality New Zealand Merino wool to improve breathability. Moreover, the interior wool lining is super soft, which offers an excellent foot feel. Oh yeah, don’t forget the high-density, 3/4″-thick wool padding.

“With unfussy styling and minimalist appeal, this slipper was designed with the modern man in mind.”

Nootkas

But honestly, the aspect I love the most is the minimalist design. It’s just a simple slipper with a wool upper and suede sole. They help me relax at the end of a long day. Maybe they’ll help you, too!

Finally, yes, I get it – these are expensive! However, I think Nootkas can justify their price through their quality materials and level of craftsmanship. As the adage goes: the best things in life aren’t free. And these Merino wool slippers are definitely one of the better things in life.

Best Merino Wool Hybrid Slippers

Glerups Wool Boot Slippers

Gotland wool/Merino wool blend | 15 colors/combinations | 1-13 (some half sizes) | Price: $130

Pros: Industry-leading warmth | Flexible fabric | Durable rubber sole

Cons: Sizing inconsistencies | Not the most fashionable

Unlike the suede soles on the Nootkas slippers, Glerups uses a rubber sole in their design (although other materials are available). This both increases the durability and life expectancy of the shoes. You can use them out on the balcony, chilling on the patio, or even out in the yard. In other words, we genuinely believe these are the quintessential hybrid Merino wool slipper.

But why? What makes them so different? Well, two things actually: comfort and price. As you can imagine, the felted wool tops, lining, and padding are super comfy on your feet. They don’t itch. They won’t cause discomfort, except maybe to your bank account.

Anyways, these Glerups wool slippers are an excellent choice for a 4-season (yes, they keep your feet cool in the summer, too) wool slippers. And if you don’t like the rubber soles or high-top construction, Glerups has plenty of variations that should suit your needs.

You may only know Levi’s as a denim brand. Honestly, I didn’t even know they were large manufacturers of other clothing accessories. Moreover, I had no clue that they dabble in the world of Merino wool.

Still, recent reports have emerged that Levi’s is forming a unique partnership with The Woolmark Company. The two plan to release an updated version of their famed wool-lined boot – the Torsten Quilted – crafted with Merino wool and a variety of other recyclable and sustainable materials.

You may know Woolmark from some of our previous articles. They are a pioneer in Merino wool innovation, and in fact, their parent company is Australian Wool Innovation. So, while there may be some big players in the mix – some with not-so-great histories– it appears as if this collaboration is genuine and productive. These boots are a step in the right direction toward an eco-fashion craze.

The boots themselves have a classic look. Not only are they minimalistic and clean, but they function as an actual pair of boots – not just some winter fashion accessory. Overall, these casual, high-performing boots are functional, fashionable, and durable. The Merino wool lining is just the icing on the cake!

But, before I can finally scratch my Merino itch (I’ll express my initial thoughts at the end), let’s take a look at some of the information we’ve received so far. Plus, we’ll dive a bit into Levi’s sustainability commitment and discuss how Merino wool is going to save the world (sort of).

So, without further ado, let’s dig our heels in the ground and peel back the layers of this Levi’s x Woolmark collaboration.

Levi’s Commitment To Sustainability & Performance

The fashion industry accounts for nearly 10% of the world’s carbon emissions. More worn-out clothes are skipping the donation bin and crowding our landfills, now more than ever. Levi’s understands that its brand contributes to this problem, and in recent years, it has done its part to protect our planet.

“We’re on a mission to change the clothing industry. For good.”

Levi’s website

Levi’s longtime commitment to high-quality, durable clothing means that there is less waste in our landfills, and it means fewer clothes bought over a lifetime. And since the fashion industry isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, it’s essential to own long-lasting, sustainably sourced clothing.

And this new Woolmark collaboration for their Torsten Quilted boots is an excellent example of Levi’s sustainability commitment.

“This casual boot has a utilitarian design that’s ideal for both the city and great outdoors, thanks to the robust structure that ensures performance, protection and comfort.”

In addition to the Woolmark-certified Merino wool lining, these boots are packed with tons of additional sustainability features. The soles are 20%-recycled materials, while 100% of the shoelace material is also recycled. Eco Cordura® and LWG-approved leather make up the water-resistant uppers. Even the insoles are made from recycled synthetic materials. In other words, the entire boot is eco-friendly.

And this isn’t the first sustainability initiative that Levi’s has been exploring in recent years. A few business practices set the denim company apart from many of its competitors in the ecosphere. Click each one to expand and learn more!

Production Technologies

Levi’s tinkering with Merino wool is another chapter in their sustainable production story. In 2011, they introduced Water<Less® technology and have since saved over 4-billion gallons of water. That’s over 6,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools saved since this process began. We can’t wait to see what they develop next!

Repair Service

While Levi’s states that all of their clothing is “rigorously tested for durability,” they understand that nothing lasts forever. However, through their tailor and repair service, they do everything to make their clothing last a lifetime. So, if you have some aging Levi’s jeans, you may want to get them fixed up.

Levi’s Second Hand Store

The less we throw away, the better our planet’s future becomes. Levi’s knows this and has taken control of the second-hand market for its own clothing. Not only does this reduce excess waste in landfills, but Levi’s can use this information to create more durable and sustainable clothing for its customers.

Future Initiatives

In addition to the new technology and longevity programs, Levi’s has committed to sourcing sustainable materials and technology in the future. They will switch to 100% sustainably-sourced cotton (up from 75%) and 100% renewable energy by 2025. In 2030, they hope to reduce water consumption by 50%.

To sum up, it’s fitting that Levi’s chose a sustainable material like Merino wool to take the next toward a greener future.

But why Merino and not other animal fibers?” Well, don’t get too far ahead of yourself there.

A Way Forward With Merino Wool

Again, the idea that Merino wool will save the world is, well, not 100% true (obviously). Still, the power of Merino is vast, and the sustainably-sourced material offers a glimpse into an eco-friendly future.

“Merino wool is increasingly present in the world of the younger generations, who care not only about performance but also about durable and environmentally friendly materials.”

John Roberts, Australian Wool Innovation CEO

In addition to other Merino innovation brands like ZQ-Merino, Woolmark does everything to make wool harvesting and production a more sustainable and ethical practice. You can learn more about the specifics through our comprehensive Merino Wool Sustainability Guide. Or, if you’re more concerned with the ethics behind Merino wool, we have an informational guide for that, too!

Yet, the sustainability of Merino wool is only second to enhanced performance features. I won’t bore you with the specifics now (mainly because there’s a Merino Wool Benefits Guide, too). Still, I’ll leave you with six key reasons why Merino wool is the future of sustainable, high-performance fabrics.

1. Comfort

Merino wool is one of the softest performance fibers on the market. It’s about 16-25 microns thick- about 1/5 the diameter of human hair and 1/2 the diameter of traditional wool fibers. And since it is so luxurious, I always call Merino the “Cashmere of the People.

2. Temperature regulation

Wool is a specialized fabric that keeps you warm in the cold and cool in the heat. The crimp in the fiber structure allows for tiny air pockets next to your skin which help to better regulate your microclimate. Plus, if it gets wet, it still keeps you warm! Pretty neat, right?

3. Moisture Management

Merino wool does an excellent job at regulating your microclimate, including moisture. The fabric wicks water vapor from your skin and allows for dispersion into the atmosphere. In fact, Merino can even hold 7% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet!

4. Odor Resistance

Yes, that’s right: Merino wool doesn’t stink. You could wear it all day, heck, even all week, and it should still smell fresh. That’s because the hydrophilic nature of wool does not hold odors. Thus, any bacterial emissions from your skin don’t get trapped in the fibers.

5. Durability

The one issue many people have with Merino wool is its lifelong longevity. Sometimes, you see pinholes, tears, and snags with thinner Merino apparel. If you plan to use Merino wool for rugged ventures, look for items blended with high-strength synthetics.

6. Versatility

When you think of Merino wool, you may think of a classic knit sweater or wool cap. However, our favorite fabric is much more adaptable; you see Merino in the outdoor industry, at fashion week, baby blankets, and even in the firefighting industry!

Did You Know…?

The average American family does approximately 8-10 loads of laundry per week. Each load, on average, uses about 30 gallons of water. That’s nearly 300 gallons per week for laundry alone, equating to over 15,000 gallons per year. For reference, that is one 24-foot above ground pool of water per year, used only for laundry.

Since you can wash it less and wear it more, your annual water consumption will decrease with Merino wool. In addition, fewer microplastics and harsh detergent chemicals will leech into the waterway. And best of all, apart from the positive environmental impact, think of all the extra time and hassle you save. Maybe you could spend that time creating a website sprouted from your love for Merino wool.

Or at least that’s what I would do.

Our Thoughts: Levi’s Torsten Quilted Boots

Alright, now that we’ve covered the sustainability and benefits of Merino wool, you probably want to learn more about these Torsten Quilted boots.

I’ll leave you with a bit of extra information about these boots. Let’s hope they become the catalyst for an eco-fashion revolution. Who knows, maybe other more prominent clothing brands will start incorporating Merino into their garments.

“Streamlined and sturdy, with good grip and a weather-resistant design, they’re up for anything you are.”

As a native New Yorker, you’ve got to love the yellow Timberland-like design of Levi’s Torsten. They seem to pair well with almost any fall or winter outfit, as they are clean and sleek casual boots. Still, as you’ve read, they are full of both sustainability and performance features, from tear-resistant insoles to grippy, recyclable bottoms.

The only thing we are a bit unsteady on is the warmth level of these boots. Of course, the Merino wool lining will keep you toasty, but if I match them with a thicker pair of Merino socks, are my feet going to catch fire? Obviously not, but you worry about the moisture management of two separate Merino layers at that point. It looks like we’ll have to test them out in the future to give you a better answer.

As for now, it looks like the redesigned Torsten boots are only available in Europe. However, if they become a popular piece, Levi’s may release them in the USA.

Final Note

And that about wraps things up. Hopefully, we’ve provided you with a better understanding of the importance of this collaboration.

Every step in the right direction toward more eco-friendly clothing means future generations can rest easier.
