There is no such thing as too many summer tops, especially if you live hot and humid climate like I do. While searching for a versatile piece to add to my wardrobe, I came across the Ridge Merino Bralette. It was just what I wanted, so – like any good shopper – I got two of them!

Since I got the bralettes, I thought, why not complete the set with a pair of boy shorts? So, that’s precisely what I did!

And now, after one year of wearing the Ridge Merino Bralette and Boy Shorts (not continually, obviously), I wanted to share some of my thoughts from when I first got them. Then, we’ll fast-forward twelve months later to see if I feel the same. I’ll review what I liked the best about each and some aspects I believe could be improved in the next release.

Initial Thoughts

I am only 5 feet tall with a slim body type, and I prefer fitted tops to end at my belly button so I can wear them with my high-waisted bottoms. That’s why my choice immediately fell on this bralette, which I got in two colors: olive night and faded rose.

Two Ridge Merino Bralette Unpackaging

Once I received my bralette, I first noticed how lightweight it was, which I shouldn’t be surprised about because it is one of well known Merino wool’s advantages. Both tops fit me just as expected, not too tight or loose, and felt like a second skin. Much of that is due to the ultralight fabric, which is so soft and breathable.

The bralette has a wide, elastic band at the bottom that sits comfortably on the ribcage without feeling too tight. This allows a snug, supportive fit for the built-in bra. Still, since the fabric is so thin and there are no pockets for padding, I hope my nipple outline doesn’t pop through like I was Jennifer Aniston on Friends. They must have kept it extra cold in that studio, right?

Ridge Merino Boy Shorts Unpackaging

As for the boy shorts, I have never owned that underwear style before, so I was excited to test them out. They are the same material, style, and color (olive night) as the bralette, which is why I purchased them together in the first place!

The construction of the boy shorts is top-notch, with strong stitching and attention to detail. You can tell a lot of thought and expertise went into the design. They offer plenty of coverage in all the right places while maintaining a close-to-skin profile. So I shouldn’t have trouble wearing them with joggers, jeans, or free-flowing dresses. However, I’ll probably opt for a thong with leggings and hip-hugging dresses.

One Year Later

Women working on couch wearing a Ridge Merino Bralette

I ordered the bralettes and boy shorts in the summer of 2022. Almost instantly, they became staples in my wardrobe. Despite initially looking for summer tops, I found myself wearing the bralette during each season. I love wearing it under sweaters in the fall and winter. It just feels warm and cozy, especially on windy days. I prefer to layer my tops with an open-front shirt on warm and sunny days. Or if it’s super hot, it works just as well as a standalone piece.

The boy shorts offer great coverage, and I wore them with various outfits. They have a slim profile, so like I mentioned a year ago, I won’t wear them with tight-fitting clothing. Moreover, the leg openings are also well-designed, allowing freedom of movement. The material is light and breathable. Adding spandex provides a stretchy and supportive fit that moves with your body, ensuring no restrictions or discomfort.

Ridge Merino Bralette Comparison Side By Side

For an experiment, I put one of the tops aside and wore only the bralette in olive night color for a couple of months to compare how the material would hold up through wears, washes, and accidents. As you can see, the bralette I wore was slightly more stretched out, but that’s because it molded around my body shape more. And as for the shorts, the material and shape still hold strong even after countless wears and washes. It still sits snug around the leg without being too loose, riding up, or bunching. Both bralettes and the boy shorts wash well and have always held their original color.

All in all, I’m more than satisfied with my purchase. I’m constantly wearing the bralette and boy shorts as pajamas around the house. And if I have to run errands, I throw jeans, and a cardigan, overtop for a comfy, casual look.

What I Liked

So, after wearing it for a year in every possible way I could think about, I’m ready to give you my final verdict on what I liked. I enjoyed many little things like the Merino wool fabric, adjustable straps, and even the built-in shelf bra (sometimes). However, the three main categories that separate these bralettes and boy shorts from the rest of the competition are their versatility, comfort, and affordability. Let’s look further into each.

Versatility

Women Stretching on Bridge Wearing A Ridge Merino Bralette

Honestly, I can wear this bralette with nearly any outfit. It’s a to-go laidback outfit with a white boyfriend-style shirt and biker shorts or jeans. I can wear it with athletic shorts for a simple summer look. And I can even wear it under a cardigan in the winter months. I can wear this Merino wool bralette all year round!

As for underwear, I typically prefer thongs for everyday use. It’s not like I’m not too fond of more coverage. I simply don’t the showing outline when wearing briefs or hipsters with slim-fitted bottoms. Giving boy shorts a chance was definitely a win for me. They provide a seamless and smooth silhouette under clothing. Which is exactly what I was looking for.

Together, the bralette and boy shorts come in a variety of colors which makes it easy to pair them with other Ridge Merino tops and bras for a complete set.

Comfort & Fit

Ridge Merino Bralette and Shorts Both Front And Back View

It really feels like I’m wearing nothing.

The bralette has a wide, elastic band at the bottom that sits comfortably on the ribcage without feeling too tight. However, it only provides low-to-medium support and is unsuitable for high-impact activities, but it works excellent for light workouts, yoga, and everyday wear.

In addition, I found the fit of the Ridge Merino boy shorts to be excellent. The waistband is wide and elasticized, offering a secure and comfortable fit without digging into the skin or sliding down. Which, with some other Merino wool underwear, I’ve had issues with.

Affordability

If you’re a seasoned Merino wool lover, you know this gear can be expensive. The cost is actually one of the few downsides of Merino wool. Fortunately, Ridge Merino offers a relatively low price tag for the bralette, boy shorts, and their entire collection, for that matter.

We develop high-quality Merino wool apparel that performs as well in daily life as it does in the wildest outdoor conditions. We’re inspired by nature to innovate and give back.

– Ridge Merino Mission

These two items combined (~$70) can be purchased for less than your standard Merino wool tee, and I can guarantee you’ll get every penny out of them. The fabric and design are just as high-quality! However, if money’s tight, you can watch for Ridge Merino’s clearance page, where many of their products (including bralettes and boy shorts) can be on sale for up to 50% off. Also, by signing up for their email list, you can receive 15% off your first order.

What I Didn’t Like

Even with all the aspects I enjoy, these clothes have two minor qualms: one for the bralette and one for the boy shorts. Nothing major, but I found little issues wearing them from the year. They are more like design suggestions than negatives. Still, take a look at each and decide for yourself!

Bralette: No Room For Padding

Ridge Merino Bralette Built In Shelf Bra Front & Back

This bralette’s only disadvantage is that it doesn’t have removable bra pads. Despite two layers in a built-in shelf bra, you can still see the nipples outline, especially with lighter colors like faded rose or coyote.

I hope Ridge Merino will upgrade their design by adding removable pads, and we won’t have to wear nipple covers anymore.

Boyshorts: No Room For “Padding”

Ridge Merino Boy Shorts Up Close

When buying the boy shorts, I thought they would be perfect for “those days.” Unfortunately, I found its fabric and construction uncomfortable to stick a pad on. I know it’s small, but Merino wool doesn’t mesh well with the sticky stuff. It is what it is, but I usually won’t wear the boy shorts when it’s my time of the month.

Final Note About The Ridge Merino Bralette & Boy Shorts

Ridge Merino Bralette Fabric Up Close

Overall, the Ridge Merino Women’s Bralette is an excellent choice for those who value comfort, support, and functionality in their undergarments. This bralette will keep you comfortable and confident all day with its adjustable straps, wide elastic band, and breathable, odor-resistant fabric. Pairing it with the boy shorts makes a fantastic top and bottom underlayer.

Ridge Merino clothing delivers on all fronts, whether for everyday comfort or durable and versatile gear for physical activities. Give both the bralette and boy shorts a try.

Your base layer can make or break your adventure. If it’s not performing to your standards, you may feel uncomfortable, or even worse, you might freeze. So, instead of you taking a risk with the wrong apparel, we’ve put together a list of the best Merino wool base layers for women to help you find the perfect shirt!

And while there are several base layer materials – silk, nylon, bamboo, etc. – we focus on our favorite natural material: Merino wool! It’s lightweight, temperature regulating, and has a soft next-to-skin feel. It doesn’t stink, either! What more could you ask for in a base layer?

So, without further ado, let’s dive into the 15 best women’s Merino wool base layers for every situation!

Quick Women’s Merino Wool Base Layer Buying Guide

Finding the right base layer to fit your various interests can be challenging. Many of the picks you’ll see today look almost identical, yet each has particular features that set them apart.

So, to help guide you with your decision, we’ve created a quick Merino wool base layer buying guide. It would help if you considered each factor while scrolling down the list.

If you want to learn more about the buying criteria, click on the boxes below.

Comfort

If you’re out in the backcountry, the last thing you want is an uncomfortable base layer. Unlike synthetics and cotton, you don’t have to worry about itching or rubbing with Merino wool, as it’s a soft, cozy fabric that feels like silk. So, if you’re looking for pure comfort, look at base layers with a higher Merino wool composition.

However, fabric feel is only part of the comfort equation. You’ll want to ensure that the fit matches your body type to avoid bunching. Also, seam construction plays a significant role in comfort. For example, if you plan on hiking with a backpack, you’ll want to steer clear of over-the-shoulder seams, as they may cause chafing.

In short, don’t strictly define comfort by one metric. It’s up to you to determine how you want to feel in your Merino wool base layer.

Temperature Regulation

In terms of temperature regulation for your base layer, you shouldn’t think of it from a pure warmth perspective. Instead, you’ll need your base layer to regulate your next-to-skin microclimate.

In other words, your base layer should keep you warm when it’s chilly and cool when it’s hot.

Merino wool base layers are ideal for temperature regulation because they have an outstanding warmth-to-weight ratio, are breathable, and control your skin’s moisture. Yet the one factor that plays an essential role in these properties is the fabric weight.

Heavier fabrics are more suitable for conditions as they provide the most warmth. In contrast, ultralight materials offer breathability in hot conditions. We’ve classified each fabric weight into four categories based on their reported thickness (denoted in grams per square meter or gsm).

To better understand which fabric weight works for you, check out our classifications and temperature ranges below.

Style & Function

The only person that should care about your style is you.

Many brands often offer multiple colors and pattern options to find which works best for you. The style also goes hand-in-hand with function, so ask yourself: where will I use this base layer?

We’ve given superlatives to these women’s Merino wool base layers so you can better answer that question yourself. For example, we’ve included ultralight layers, heavyweight layers, travel layers, running layers, skiing layers, and much more.

Moreover, every base layer has unique properties & features that set it apart from its competitors. There are 1/4 zips, turtlenecks, 3/4 sleeves, and even onesies! The seam constructions, sleeve lengths, necklines, and hem lengths also differ.

If you can’t find a style that fits you, reach out to us! We’ll point you in the right direction. We’re always happy to help you find your perfect base layer.

Durability

One of the leading disadvantages of Merino wool is its garment life. It can’t handle the tears and snags as well as synthetic materials. And sometimes, the fabric may sag or misshape over several washes.

But that doesn’t mean Merino wool is not durable!

You’ll get hundreds of wears out of your Merino wool base layer with proper care and usage. In fact, I have an Icebreaker base layer that’s still in great shape after seven years of wear! That’s because I take proper care of my Merino wool gear!

If you’re still concerned about Merino wool’s durability, just look for base layers blended with synthetics. Many brands spin the wool fibers around a synthetic core, so the fabric strength improves without compromising on softness.

Best Overall Merino Wool Base Layer For Women

Smartwool Classic All-Season Long-Sleeve Base Layer

87% Merino / 13% Nylon | 150 gsm (lightweight) | Slim fit | 9 colors | Price: $$$

Smartwool Women's 150 Base Layer Various Colors

Pros: Best all-around performance | Expert design & versatile style | Multiple colors

Cons: May experience initial itchiness | Must launder fabric with care

As I’ve previously mentioned, I’m a Smartwool fangirl through and through. Something about their apparel just fits well with me. I love how their clothing looks simple but has well-designed performance features. And when it comes to Merino wool base layers, the performance of the Smartwool Classic All-Season LS Crew reigns supreme.

As you’ll see throughout this list, many of these base layers look roughly the same. So it’s the details that make the difference. With this Smartwool base layer, you get several technical features. The raglan sleeves eliminate shoulder seams (which reduces backpack strap chafing), and the side seams wrap around the front for a more secure fit. Smartwool even uses a particular stitching technique to improve ease of movement.

In addition to its technical design, this base layer is our best overall because of its comfortable, durable material. It’s soft, comfy wool spun around a sturdy nylon core. So, you still get all the odor-proof properties with added strength. And while we think the fabric is silky smooth, some users have reported initial itchiness. While this rarely happens, it usually goes away after the first wash.

Finally, Smartwool has recently reclassified their fabric weights, so this “all-season” base layer is an ultralight 150 gsm. If you’re looking for something heavier for the colder months, you can check out their 250 gsm midweight layer instead.

Best 100% Merino Wool Base Layer For Women

Icebreaker Women’s Merino 200 Oasis LS Crewe

100% Merino wool | 200 gsm (light-to-midweight) | Slim fit | 7 colors | Price: $$$$

Women in Burgundy Merino Wool Base Layer

Pros: Top warmth-to-weight ratio | Versatile design | Drop tail hem

Cons: Fit discrepancies (sleeves) | Pilling may occur

100% Merino; 100% comfort. The Icebreaker Oasis 200 crew is a classic, comfy base layer that’s one of the most versatile on our list. The 200 gsm light-to-midweight fabric offers layered insulation in colder conditions. Yet, it’s light enough to be worn as a standalone piece if the weather gets warmer.

This blend of performance and versatility is why it’s Icebreaker’s top-selling women’s base layer.

And while the fabric is top-in-class, the technical features and design choices set the Oasis 200 apart from other base layers. For one, the underarm gussets improve mobility and prevent underarm chafing. Moreover, the offset shoulder seams prevent shoulder irritation from wearing a backpack. In fact, all the seams are flat-locked to reduce irritation. There is even a drop tail hem for added lower back coverage. Icebreaker expertly designed this base layer for ultimate comfort and performance.

Despite the enhanced design properties, a few concerns are still worth noting. Some users have reported that while the shirt’s body is snug, the sleeves may drape loose. Although, I wear a small (5’1″, 110 lbs.), and the sleeves fit acceptably on me. Also, as with most 100% Merino wool clothing, you may experience some pilling in the wash. This is natural as non-uniform wool fibers migrate out of the material, strengthening it in the long term.

If you’re gearing up for your next adventure, give the Oasis 200 Crew – or any of Icebreaker’s base layers – a try. You will be warm and comfortable while performing at your best. Because your clothing should never stop you from being your best self.

Best Value Women’s Merino Wool Base Layer

Meriwool Women’s Long Sleeve Thermal Shirt

100% Merino wool | 250 gsm (midweight) | Slim fit | 9 colors | Price: $$

Pros: Best price-to-quality ratio | Perfect for layering | Surprisingly breathable

Cons: Short torso length | Long-term durability concerns

As you may have noticed, women’s Merino wool base layers can be expensive. Although, inexpensive options are available if you just need a basic shirt with no technical features. Among these cheaper alternatives, the one with the best quality is the Meriwool Women’s Thermal Shirt.

Like many of Meriwool’s products, the comfort and style of this base layer rival that of its more expensive competitors. It performs just as well as every other base layer we’ve tested. The 100%, 17.5-micron Merino wool feels just as soft as others. Moreover, the midweight fabric is an excellent cold-season layer while remaining breathable in milder conditions.

Although, there are a few concerns to note. For one, we’ve noticed that the hem length (torso length) is shorter than most base layers. So, if you’re taller, consult the sizing charts to understand how it fits. Also, some users have reported long-term durability problems. This is typically the case with 100% Merino wool clothing. So, to improve your garment life, follow proper care instructions.

So, if you’re looking for a cozy, high-performing base layer at a reasonable price, Meriwool is your best bet. This thermal shirt embodies Meriwool’s values of comfort, performance, and affordability (a significant emphasis on the last).

Most Unique Merino Wool Base Layer For Women

Kari Traa Smekker Base Layer Top

100% Merino wool | 190 gsm (lightweight) | Tailored fit | 6 colors (seasonal) | Price: $$$$

Pros: Stylish jacquard knit pattern | Enhanced temp. regulation | Designed for women, by women

Cons: Sizing discrepancies | Material is thinner than expected

Many base layers on this list are technically advanced but may lack style. They typically come in solid colors (as with most Merino wool clothing), which is not bad. However, you may want some extra flare and fashion in your wardrobe. That’s where the Kari Traa Smekker Base Layer Top comes into play.

The jacquard knit pattern isn’t just for show, either. This unique fabric technique creates flattering lines for a snugger fit. The design, in combination with soft, 100% Merino wool and flatlock seams, makes this women’s base layer one of our favorites for winter fashion!

Although this pattern is associated with thicker knitwear, the Smekker is lightweight. The 190 gsm will keep you warm as a base layer, but you may need something heavier (like the midweight Kari Traa Silja Half Zip) if you’re looking for a standalone top. Also, since this is a snug, tailored fit, you may want to size up if you want a more flowing, relaxed fit.

As with all of Kari Traa’s collections, the Smekker Base Layer Top is designed for women by women. They make women’s sportswear with your comfort, style, and performance. So, check out what they have to offer!

Best Heavyweight Merino Wool Base Layer For Women

Minus33 Tanana Women’s Expedition Crew

100% Merino wool | 400 gsm (heavyweight) | Regular fit | Only in black | Price: $$$$

Women wearing a black 400 gsm base layer

Pros: Best-in-class warmth | Super comfortable | Simple yet flattering design

Cons: Only suitable for cold/freezing conditions | Limited color options

Aptly named after an Alaskan river & town, where temperatures average negative numbers five months out of the year, the Tanana Crew is the warmest top on our list. This 400 gsm base layer is nearly double the fabric weight of others yet provides an exponential increase in warmth. It has been tested in the Arctic, Antarctica, and even at the top of Mount Everest!

It may sound like we are repeating ourselves, but we can’t rave enough about the warmth of this base layer. Minus33 says it should only be worn as a layering piece in freezing temperatures, even for low-impact activities. Although, we’ve noticed it works as a standalone shirt in milder conditions.

The simple design with princess seams will hug your curves nicely. Still, it’s not skin-tight, but that’s for a reason. With a standard fit, there is more room to breathe and help regulate moisture on your skin. This fit type is common among Minus33 clothing.

Finally, the only real issue with the Tanana Crew is that it only comes in black. Although, it’s not like the color matters when you’re off on a cold-weather excursion. So, grab this heavyweight base layer – or other expedition gear from Minus33 – to prep for all your winter adventures.

Best Ultralight Merino Wool Base Layer For Women

Patagonia Long-Sleeved Capilene® Cool Merino Shirt

65% Merino / 35% recycled polyester | ~140 gsm (ultralight) | Standard fit | 5 colors | Price: $$$

Woman in a blue Merino wool shirt

Pros: Top moisture control | Breezy, soft feel | Sustainably & ethically sourced

Cons: Slightly see-through | Must launder ultralight fabric with care

The advantage of Merino wool as a base layer fabric is its excellent warmth-to-weight ratio. Therefore, you don’t always need a heavy shirt to get the job done. Sometimes, you’ll only need a basic, lightweight base layer that helps regulate moisture. And among those options, our favorite is the Patagonia Capilene® Cool Merino Shirt.

This technical 140 gsm (ultralight) offers best-in-class moisture control! In addition to improved moisture wicking and breathability, Patagonia includes side vents, set-in sleeves, and a slight drop hem to improve performance. Although, since the material is thin, it may appear semi-transparent. So, it may work better as a layer instead of a standalone piece.

The thing we love the most about this Patagonia Merino wool base layer is its minimal environmental impact. By itself, Merino wool is sustainable. However, Patagonia takes it to the next level. Their wool is certified to the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), which focuses on animal welfare and pastureland management. Moreover, they use 35% recycled polyester (Capilene®) for added strength. They even follow the bluesign® system to ensure their supply chain process meets the highest environmental & safety standards.

And it’s not just the environment that Patagonia cares about. They also treat their people well! For example, this garment is Fair Trade Certified™, ensuring their factory workers make a livable wage. As big proponents of Merino wool ethics, this is a huge plus.

In short, this Patagonia Merino wool base layer is comfortable, layerable, breathable, affordable, and, best of all, sustainable. Grab yours today!

Best Women’s 1/4-Zip Merino Wool Base Layer

Ridge Merino Aspect 1/4-Zip Merino Wool Base Layer

84% Merino / 16% Nylon | 180 gsm (lightweight) | Snug fit | 3 colors | Price: $$$

Women's Black 1/4 Zip Merino Wool Base Layer

Pros: First-rate durability | Versatile style & design | Relatively affordable

Cons: Limited availability | Hard to layer underneath

There are more base layer designs than just your basic shirt. For example, the traditional 1/4-zip pullover works well as a base layer since you can adjust the zipper to improve ventilation and performance. Moreover, its has a classic style, so you can wear it on the trail, at the store, or at home! And the one with the best combination of performance and style is the Ridge Merino Aspect 1/4 Zip.

Like Ridge Merino’s best-selling Aspect shirt, this 1/4-zip is designed for the rigors of the outdoors. The 180 gsm lightweight material (although Ridge Merino classifies it as midweight) is toasty but not too toasty, making it perfect for mild conditions. The flatlocked seams and raglan sleeves reduce potential chafing, while the extended hem length adds coverage. Ridge Merino even reinforces their fabric with (m)Force Technology to improve durability and garment life.

While it was designed for the outdoors, this 1/4-zip base layer is flattering enough for social gatherings and everyday wear. Even the thumbholes are discreetly hidden, so it doesn’t look too outdoorsy. We also love the snug, athletic fit. Although, you may have difficulty wearing anything more than a Merino wool bra underneath as you don’t want the fabric bunching up.

The only issue we have with this 1/4-zip Merino wool base layer is the limited selection. Only three colors are available now, and many sizes are sold out. Yet, as we’ve seen from the Ridge Merino Aspect leggings, new colors and styles are released seasonally. Still, you may want to get one sooner rather than later!

Best 3/4 Merino Wool Base Layer For Women

Woolx Jenny 3/4-Sleeve Crew Neck

85% Merino / 12% Nylon / 3% Spandex | 150 gsm (ultralight) | Loose fit | 5 colors | Price: $$$

Woman in Purple 3/4 Sleeve Merino Wool Base Layer

Pros: Flowing, relaxed style | Soft, 17.5-micron wool | Cute pattern selection

Cons: Sleeves slightly longer than 3/4-length | Scoop neck design not for everyone

Base layers are typically designed with a slim, snug fit as other layers are intended to be worn over them. However, you may not need an athletic-looking shirt for everyday wear. So, if you’re looking for a base layer with a more casual, relaxed fit, the Woolx Jenny 3/4-Sleeve Crew may be your best option.

I love the 3/4-sleeve design (although it’s more like 7/8) because it feels less restrictive than full sleeves. Moreover, the ultralight, 17.5-micron fabric and loose fit allow a full range of motion. And if that’s not enough, Woolx uses 3% Spandex to provide extra stretch.

Yet the best part of this 3/4 Merino wool base layer is its unique, casual style. It’s versatile enough to be worn almost anywhere, although it may not be the best option for cold-weather adventures. Also, while we love the scoop neck design, some users have reported that it does not lay flat enough. We haven’t experienced this issue, but it’s still worth noting.

Finally, we love the color and pattern options for the Jenny crew. Throughout Woolx’s base layer collection, they offer vibrant pastel colors in both solid and striped patterns (with some seasonal additions). It’s like you’re getting the comfort and performance of a technical base layer in a more casual, everyday shirt.

Best Merino Wool Turtleneck Base Layer For Women

Duckworth Women’s Powder High Neck

50% Merino / 30% Acrylic / 20% Polyester | 300 gsm (heavyweight) | Loose fit | 4 colors | Price: $$$$$

Women's green turtleneck Merino wool base layer

Pros: Fashion meets function | Enhanced warmth features | Merino wool sourced exclusively in the USA

Cons: Torso length may be long for some | Rather expensive

I’ve never been a fan of traditional turtlenecks. They always make me feel like I’m being strangled, and to be honest, most of them are plain ugly. However, my distaste is no more. With a loose neck and versatile style, the Duckworth Powder High Neck is no traditional turtleneck. It’s so much better.

The Powder High Neck’s design is a unique blend of fashion meets function, which can be challenging to find in the world of Merino. The fit is relaxed and loose for that cozy Merino wool feeling (for a tighter fit, size down). The foldable cowl neck is comfy but not too bulky, making it uber functional. Moreover, the hem rests lower (mid-hip) for better coverage. Yet some shorter users (like myself) think it’s about a smidge too long, but who’s measuring?

The fashion and function aren’t the only things that make the Powder High Neck unique; it’s also the Merino wool. While most companies source their Merino wool from Australia or New Zealand, Duckworth sources it from their ranch in Montana. They control each step of the farm-to-closet process to ensure high-quality wool. With the Powder High Neck, we can see this expertise with the soft yet durable material.

According to Duckworth, this “perennial bestseller” works best for those with an active-casual lifestyle. And, we agree! It’s perfect for coffee shop runs, Netflix marathons, or those chilly January trips to the gym. And while it’s on the more expensive side, I’m telling you, it’s worth it! This classic Merino wool “turtleneck” base layer will be your go-to shirt when the months get colder.

Best Women’s Merino Wool Base Layer For Running

Tracksmith Brighton Base Layer

52% Wool / 28% Nylon / 20% Polyester | ~145 gsm (ultralight) | Athletic fit | 3 colors | $$$

Green womens running base layer

Pros: Best-in-class breathability | Seamless construction prevents chafing | Silky 16.5 micron fibers

Cons: Pilling to be expected | No thumbholes

It can be challenging to find the best running outfit for chilly conditions. On the one hand, you don’t want to layer too much and overheat. On the other, you need adequate protection from the elements so you don’t freeze yourself to death. This is why Merino wool – in all its temperature-regulating glory – is the best material for high-performance running shirts. And the Tracksmith Brighton Base Layer is the best shirt for high-performance runners.

For example, the engineered Merino wool mesh is centered around the chest & midsection. This better ventilates your core, which generates the most body heat. In addition, Tracksmith partnered with expert sewists in Europe to create a seam-free interior! The seamless construction reduces any potential rubbing or chafing, so you can have a more seamless run.

In terms of the fabric, the wool-synthetic blend aids in durability, as pure Merino wool fibers at this size and weight (16.5-micron, 145 gsm) are delicate. Still, you may experience some pilling during the first few wash cycles. Remember, pilling isn’t necessarily bad, as the weak fibers migrate out of the material. Moreover, since wool doesn’t stink, laundry is less frequent, and there are fewer stinky running clothes everywhere.

Whether you’re a weekend warrior, devout morning jogger, or on-again-off-again athlete, the Brighton Base Layer should be your go-to Merino wool running shirt. Inspired by running legends and designed by running experts, you’ll no longer worry about what to wear. And who knows, maybe it will shave a few seconds off your mile time?

Best Women’s Base Layer For Hiking

Helly-Hansen LIFA® Merino Midweight Half-Zip Base Layer

57% Merino / 43% synthetic (100% wool ext.) | 225 gsm (midweight) | Athletic fit | 6 colors | Price: $$$$

Blue Women's Merino Wool Half Zip Base Layer

Pros: 2-in-1 design for moisture management | Versatile cold-weather layer | Quality 1/2-zipper

Cons: Sizing discrepancies | Seams appear unnecessarily thick

You don’t want to freeze your butt off while you’re dozens of miles from civilization. Although you don’t want to carry too much weight in your backpack, you won’t be able to hike as far. So, if you’re headed out on the trail, one of the best Merino wool base layers options is the Helly-Hansen LIFA® Merino Midweight Half-Zip.

What sets this half-zip base layer apart is the unique 2-in-1 construction. Helly-Hansen uses their LIFA® Stay Warm technology for the inner layer, which offers best-in-class moisture-wicking. Meanwhile, the exterior is 100% Merino wool which aids in warmth and breathability. In addition, the half-zip allows for better ventilation if you start to get too hot. All these features work together to remove sweat from your skin, keeping you dry and warm while exploring the backcountry.

We love the athletic, tailored fit that sits snug and cozy against the body. However, some users note that the fit may be too tight. To be safe, consult Helly-Hansen’s sizing charts if you’re interested. Also, you may notice that the shoulder seams are relatively wide. This is because the thicker seams improve durability. So, it may not be the chicest design, but it will serve you when you’re using the same base layer five years later.

Finally, while we’ve classified the LIFA® Merino Half-Zip as the best hiking base layer, we really mean cold-weather hiking. Helly-Hansen offers a lightweight version of the same design if you’re hiking in milder temperatures. Otherwise, if you need a warm, versatile base layer for any winter sport, we think you’ll really enjoy this base layer.

Best Women’s Base Layer For Cycling

PEARL iZUMi Merino Thermal Long-Sleeve Base Layer

58% recycled polyester / 42% Merino | 250 gsm (midweight) | Slim fit | Charcoal only | Price: $$$

Womens Black Merino Wool Base Layer

Pros: Easily layerable | Technical features for smoother riding | Recycled, sustainable fabric

Cons: Limited availability | Not 100% odor-resistant

In my little cycling experience, I’ve noticed that ultralight and lightweight base layers don’t provide enough protection during cold-weather rides. Moreover, throwing on a layer overtop makes me sweat like a pig. Although, if I wear a midweight base layer, I usually can last hours on my bike in any condition. And the best midweight cycling layer – Merino wool or not – is the PEARL iZUMi Merino Thermal Long-Sleeve.

The best part about this base layer – and all PEARL iZUMi apparel – is that it was designed purely for cyclists. The set-in sleeves and tagless interior help to control chafing on long rides, while the thumb loops keep your sleeves in place. What else would you expect from one of the best cycling apparel brands on the market?

And, as always, we have to talk about the Merino wool. This has a lower wool content than other products, but that’s a purposeful design choice. The recycled polyester does better at wicking sweat away from your skin as you pedal. However, this comes at the cost of being less odor-proof than fabrics with a higher wool percentage.

Still, we love the soft, 18.5-micron midweight fabric. Although, if you’re looking for something a little lighter to wear under your jersey, PEARL iZUMi offers a lightweight version of this Merino wool base layer. Since both shirts have limited availability, you should jump at the opportunity to get one before they’re gone!

Best Women’s Merino Wool Ski Base Layer

Mons Royale Monsie One-Piece Baselayer

100% Merino wool | 190 gsm (lightweight) | Standard fit | 2 colors | Price: $$$$$

Pink Merino Wool Onesie Base Layer With Hood

Pros: Easy front, rear, & full-body access | 3/4 length designed for ski boots | Hood fits helmet

Cons: Not super versatile | Not as form-fitting as you would expect

I know what you’re thinking: “Really? A Merino wool onesie?” And yes, yes, it is. The Mons Royale Monsie is a unique, warm, and comfy base layer for ultimate winter performance. The 190 gsm lightweight fabric is just the right thickness to keep you warm under your ski jacket and snow pants without causing you to overheat. Moreover, the mesh back and front zipper vent away any excess moisture.

And we understand that the onesie is not the most versatile style. However, it was not designed to be! Mons Royale specifically created this piece for the slopes. The 3/4-length legs and reinforced thumb loops prevent fabric bunching. Also, the hood fits snugly under your helmet. So there’s no need for a bulky balaclava when you hit the slopes (although I usually bring a Merino wool buff just in case).

The one concern many skiers have with onesies is their ease of access. If you really have to go, you probably don’t want to completely undress, especially if it’s freezing. Luckily, Mons Royale expertly crafted the onesie with an envelope fly and full-width rear zipper whenever nature calls.

Finally, you may be hesitant about purchasing an actual Merino wool onesie. We get it; we really do. But if you’re an adrenaline-fueled snow bunny, there is no better way to stay warm in the backcountry than using a onesie as a base layer. And, the best Merino wool onesie on the market – in our not-so-expert opinion – is the Mons Royale Monsie. Check it out for yourself!

Best Women’s Base Layer For Travel

Unbound Merino Long Sleeve Merino Crew

100% Merino wool | 150 gsm (ultralight) | Relaxe fit | 2 colors | Price: $$$

Woman in Blue wool long sleeve crew

Pros: Easily dressed up or down | Luxuriously soft material | Packable & wrinkle-resistant

Cons: Sleeves may feel long or baggy | Limited availability

Within the last few years, Unbound Merino has made a name for themselves in men’s travel apparel. In the Spring of 2022, they launched their much-anticipated women’s collection filled with soft, comfy Merino wool gear. We’ve put their travel dress to the test, and it passed with flying colors. And in terms of travel base layers, their newly-launched long sleeve Merino crew is one of our favorites.

So why is this base layer such a must-have for travelers? Well, it’s simple. There are no tags or labels. You can easily dress it up with a nice pair of pants. Or, if you’re traveling in more tropical climates, it looks great with shorts, and the ultralight fabric weight will keep you cool no matter the temperature. Moreover, it’s wrinkle-resistant and doesn’t stink! Due to this unique versatility, you can pack less and travel more!

Another feature that sets this base layer apart is the flowing, classic fit. It’s relaxed but not too baggy that it can’t be worn as an underlayer. However, some users have reported that the looser sleeve construction does not fit all body types. I think the style adds to the design principle of simple versatility, but that’s just me.

Finally, since Unbound Merino’s women’s collection has been so popular since its release, they have been selling out fast. So, if you don’t see a color or size you like, you may want to pre-order a shirt instead! You shouldn’t have to wait long, though, as we reached out to them, and they assured us another wave of long-sleeve crews is in production.

Best Merino Wool Base Layer For Everyday Wear

Ibex 24-Hour LS Scoop Neck Crew

100% Merino wool | 150 gsm (ultralight) | Regular fit | 10 colors | Price: $$$

Woman Wearing Maroon Long Sleeve Merino Wool Shirt

Pros: Fabric cooling technology | Vivid assortment of color options | Versatile construction

Cons: Neckline could be more “scooped” | Sizing & fit discrepancies

Many base layers you’ve read about today are designed for technical use. But let’s be honest; most people aren’t going to trek through the woods daily. And while Ibex typically creates apparel for these outdoor adventures, they also make everyday clothing like their 24-hour long-sleeve scoop neck.

What we love about this base layer is the minimalist yet elegant design. There is no flashiness or frills, just a basic, comfy base layer. The ultralight, 100% Merino wool fabric is finished with a unique steaming technique known as MECool, which makes it feel cooler. So, if you sweat randomly throughout the day, as I do, it will help regulate your body temperature.

Moreover, as with all of Ibex’s base layer collections, the 24-hour scoop neck comes in various colors. And it’s not just your basic earth tones either. There a vibrant shades like walnut, beetroot, evergreen, terracotta, soft moss, and French navy. In other words, there is bound to be a color that matches your daily style.

Although, as a big fan of a deep scoop neck, I have to say that the neckline is shallower than I would like. It seems to be more of a crew cut than a scoop, but I’m picky, so who knows? Still, it’s not a dealbreaker for us. And if it isn’t one for you, too, head to Ibex to check out this 24-hour base layer!

Ah, can you really beat the feeling of finding the perfect pair of leggings? Stretchy but supportive. Fashionable but functional. Versatile yet ever so unique. Heck, even pockets?! Yeah, us too! That’s why we’ve crafted a list of the best Merino wool leggings for women.

There are leggings, tights, and base layers for every type of adventurer. There’s bound to be a pair that suits your lifestyle, from the casual wearer to the hardcore hiker.

So, without further ado, let’s get into it. May I present to you, tried and true, the 15 best Merino leggings for women.

Disclosure: To maintain genuineness and authenticity, Merino Wool Gear DOES NOT sponsor products. However, as an affiliate member, we may earn a small commission from qualifying purchases.

What Makes The Perfect Pair Merino Wool Leggings?

It’s a question that is always up for debate: what is the perfect legging? Well, honestly, I wish I could give you a straight answer to that question. All I know is that a good pair of leggings makes me feel secure and robust at the same time.

Alright, maybe that’s a bit dramatic, but you get the point.

Anyways, when researching and exploring these Merino wool leggings, I considered the overall vibe of the leggings. But on a more technical and objective perspective (somewhat), I tried to critique each legging on several of the following categories.

While a formula for the perfect pair of leggings may not exist (yet), the below criteria are a start to obtain the variables.

Comfort

While unique to each individual, comfort has a lot to do with the legging construction. Fabric-wise, if there is more elastane, you will get more stretch. Specifically for Merino wool, the lower micron fiber diameters are the softest.

Fit

When we talk about fit, we think of it like “how well do these leggings show the good and hide the bad.” Panel-stiched leggings may hug your curves better but may not meet your functionality needs. All fits are differe

Style

In itself, style is a personal affair. However, many of us like to showcase our personalities through our clothing, and there is no fault in that. Look for leggings with colors, patterns, and features that best fit you.

Temp. Regulation

You may think of temperature control as warmth; however, it’s about managing your microclimate- hot or cold, wet or dry. The thicker the fabric (in gsm), the warmer it will seem, and 250-gsm is the sweet spot for three-season use.

Performance

Performance is such a shallow marketing word, to be honest. Although, in our case, we view performance as durability, versatility, and functionality. In other words, “how well do the leggings allow you to become your best self!

‘True Price’

The dollar amount alone does not account for the ‘true price’ of Merino Wool Gear. You must consider the longevity, number of wears, limitations, laundry process, etc. So, don’t let the price tag stop you from exploring.

Best Overall Merino Wool Leggings

Woolly Merino Wool Leggings

95% Merino Wool, 5% Elastane | 320 GSM | Black or Charcoal | Price: $$$

Pros: Comfortable 4-way stretch | Warm & breathable | Wider waistband

Cons: Not completely form-fitting | Initial pilling and/or itchiness possible

We start our list with a versatile, fashionable pair from Woolly. These minimalist Merino leggings may look basic, but they come with tons of enhanced comfort and performance features.

The heavyweight 320 GSM fabric is thick enough that you can’t see through it but not too thick to hinder breathability. Plus, Woolly incorporates 5% elastane into the material construction for a comfortable four-way stretch. So, these leggings hug your curves nicely without restricting your movement.

However, it’s the small details we love the most about these leggings (and all Woolly clothing, for that matter). They use flatlock seams and a tagless interior for added comfort. And the best part is: they don’t stink!

So, if you’re looking for a pair of versatile, high-performing Merino wool leggings, Woolly should be your first choice. See the link below, or check out our comprehensive Woolly Review.

Update: Although there is no phone pocket, Woolly has hinted that they will add one to their Fall 2021 collection.

Best Wool Leggings: Runner-Up

Ibex Women’s Izzy Tights

71% Wool, 24% Nylon, 5% Elastane | 345 gsm | 19 micron | 4 colors | Price: $$$$$

Ibex Women's Izzy Tights

Pros: Comfortable high waistband | Easy access thigh pocket | Second-skin comfort

Cons: Limited availability | Relatively expensive | Sizing may run large

Update January 31, 2022: These leggings are currently out of stock on Ibex’s website. We will follow-up periodically to see if this item makes it back into their collection.

If you’re looking for a badass pair of Merino wool leggings from a brand that cares about its base, then look no further. The Ibex Women’s Izzy Tights are basically a tie for the top spot in Best Merino Wool Leggings. These tights have one of the highest performing materials and best craftsmanship on this list (as does most Ibex Merino apparel) . So honestly, you’ve got to give them a chance before scrolling on.

Before I get into the unique Merino fabric, I would be doing you a disservice if I didn’t mention the versatile, athletic construction. The stitching is in all the right places to move with you while still providing enhanced support. Plus, there is even a thick, high waistband for better hold and comfort. It’s like Ibex genuinely crafted these leggings for every woman’s needs. Heck, it even has pocket!

Moreover, the crown jewel of the Ibex Izzy Tights: the fabric. There is a supersoft, 71% Merino wool, 24% Nylon, and 5% Elastane. The 19-micron Merino offers plenty of comfort and odor resistance, while the synthetic materials aid in breathability, durability, and support. It’s like the perfect blend of the good while minimizing the bad. I guess that’s why these tights are on the pricier end of the Merino spectrum.

Still, when it comes to affordability, it’s not just about cost but quality. The better quality clothing may seem expensive, but like with the Ibex Women’s Izzy Tights, they will pay for themselves in the long run. And if you’re not sold on Merino wool leggings enough to break the bank, then keep reading, and there will be some more affordable options ahead.

Best Value Merino Wool Leggings

Merino.Tech Midweight Merino Wool Leggings

100% Merino Wool | 250 GSM | 18.5 Microns | 8 colors available | Price: $

Pros: Excellent price-to-quality ratio | Multiple colors | Free wool socks w/ purchase

Cons: Sizing runs large | Some knee stretching after heavy use

Yes, I understand that Merino wool leggings can be on the expensive end of the spectrum. However, there are alternative options for those who want to test out wool leggings without spending an arm and a leg. I mean, how are you supposed to wear leggings without a leg?

Dumb joke aside, Merino.Tech offers a solid pair of Merino wool leggings at an excellent price-to-quality ratio. Sure, they aren’t the top-of-the-line, but they still have a high degree of functionality. They are comfy, odor-resistant, and provide exceptional moisture-wicking properties.

I will vouch for these Merino.Tech leggings until the day I die, or until I become too broke from buying Merino clothing. However, I wouldn’t be giving you both sides of the story. With the 100% Merino wool construction, these leggings aren’t as durable as other pairs that are blended with synthetics. Also, fashion-wise, I guess you could wear these leggings as a standalone piece, but I think they are better used as long underwear or pajamas. It’s just my genuine opinion.

Still, you can’t beat the eight different colors (something you don’t see much in the Merino world). Moreover, to add to the value aspect, Merino.Tech will give you a free pair of socks with each purchase, and all of their products have a lifetime warranty. If that’s not value, I’m not sure what is.

Best Merino Leggings For Yoga

Kari Traa Women’s Rose Base Layer Bottoms

100% Merino Wool | Light-to-Midweight | 9 colors available | Price: $$$

Pros: Unique floral design | Side panels for breathability | Comfy 4-way stretch

Cons: Must launder with care | Not meant for rugged activities | Relatively expensive

Whether you’re chilling in Savasana or finally attempting the Handstand Scorpion, you need a pair of yoga leggings that will move with you throughout the entire session. And, Kari Traa knows this, plain and simple. Their Merino Rose Pants are our top choice for wool yoga leggings.

Let’s start with the material and the design because that’s where these leggings really shine. The construction and snugness are what you want out of a pair of leggings; it hugs you in all the right places while still leaving room for movement. That’s because Kari Traa uses a 4-way stretch design that all yogis love. Oh yeah, I can’t forget to mention the nine unique colors and floral patterns, but I’ll let you check out the rest.

As with everything in this world, there are always a few cons. I’ve noticed with these Kari Traa Merino Leggings that they are pretty delicate since they are a bit lighter than what I was accustomed to. Moreover, this means you’ll have to take better care of them. Still, the more love you show these leggings, the more satisfaction you’ll receive.

Overall, I’m a big fan of the unique patterns of these leggings because I typically don’t see much variety with Merino wool. Plus, Kari Traa is a reputable brand that makes quality products. Check them out on Amazon below, or you can search other collections on Kari Traa’s website.

Best Merino Wool Leggings For Running

Smartwool Merino Sport 7/8 Leggings

Lining: 56% Merino, 44% Nylon | Exterior 100% Synthetic | 150 GSM | 3 Colors | Price: $$$

Pros: Two-pocket design | Functional 7/8 length | Durable exterior

Cons: Questionable long-term durability | Runs slightly large around hips

If you’re more of a 10K type of person, then you should take a peek at the Smartwool Women’s Merino Sport 7/8 leggings. As the name suggests, these leggings sit just below the calf, and the length makes them perfect for high-running socks and reduced ankle chafing. Plus, your legs get a little extra breathing room.

As for the material, unlike other leggings we mentioned so far, the Smartwool 7/8 Sport uses a two-layer system. The interior lining comprises just over half of Merino wool. Not only does this feel super soft on your skin, but the smoothness also reduces chafing. On the other hand, a Nylon/Elastane exterior is crafted for added durability and breathability. It’s honestly the best of both worlds.

Moreover, these Smartwool leggings come loaded with performance features, so you can run the extra mile. The high-rise waistband is lined with Merino wool for added comfort. The engineered gusset reduces any ‘ride-up’ that you may experience. Also, it actually has pockets! Like real pockets! There is one drop pocket and one zipper pocket so you can comfortably bring your phone and keys on your morning jog.

Overall, Smartwool is a fantastic brand, and these leggings meet – if not exceed – their high standards. The only qualm I have is that I wish there was more Merino in the fabric. But again, I’m a Merino STAN through and through. If you want, take the time to see the Smartwool Women’s Merino Sport 7/8 Leggings yourself below.

Note: If you’re looking for a high-performing sports bra to match your Merino wool leggings, you’re in look. We’ve crafted a list of the 12 Best Merino Bras For Maximum Comfort. Check it out today!

Best Merino Wool Leggings For Travel

Minus33 Franconia Midweight Bottoms

100% Merino Wool | Midweight | 18.5 Microns | 6 colors available | Price: $$

Pros: Simple, versatile construction | Excellent affordability | Soft next-to-skin comfort

Cons: Waistband could be thicker | Must launder with care | Lacks pockets

In the world of ultralight traveling, you need to pack clothing that is versatile enough to weather any climate. These Minus33 Franconia leggings do precisely that. Not only can you wear them as thermal underwear in the coldest of colds, but you can rock them in more moderate climates as standalone leggings. They truly make a perfect addition to any capsule wardrobe.

But what makes the Minus33 Franconia so different than the rest of the Merino wool leggings on this list? Firstly, they are made with soft, 100% Merino wool at a precise fabric thickness of 230 gsm. In other words, they are right on the lower end of the midweight range (the goldilocks of fabric thickness). Also, they are incredibly affordable, and therefore, you can spend more of your hard-earned money on travel experiences.

View Comprehensive Minus33 Brand Review

Still, the reason why I review Merino Wool Gear is to inform you of both the good and the bad so you can make your own purchasing decisions. With the Franconia, they lack a thicker waistband, and moreover, there aren’t any pockets or added extra features. But if you like simple a design crafted with high-performance Merino fabric, then make sure to check them out today.

Best Wool Leggings For Hiking

Helly Hansen LIFA Merino Baselayer Pants

100% Merino Exterior, 100% LIFA Interior | Light-to-Midweight | 11 colors available | Price: $$$

Pros: 2-in-1 fabric design | Enhanced breathability | Multiple colors

Cons: Not for hot conditions | Feels thinner than pictured

Breathable? Yup. Comfortable? You bet. Fashionable? Well, I’d say so. The Helly Hansen Women’s LIFA Merino Baselayer Pants are one of the most finely-tuned, high-performing pairs of Merino wool leggings on our list. Thus, making them perfect for every outdoor activity, from quick day hikes to multi-day overnight treks.

Let’s start with one factor you don’t see very often with Merino wool leggings: protection. These Helly-Hansen leggings are crafted from a LIFA Merino interior and Merino wool exterior. Thus, you are getting the warmth and comfort from the Merino combined with the durability and breathability of synthetics. It’s the best of both worlds, although I wouldn’t rock these leggings in peak summer, as you might get too hot.

Next, what really sets these leggings apart from the competition is overall comfort. More specifically, active comfort. The thick waistband, supportive material, and strategic stitching allow for full movement range without sacrificing performance. Honestly, I wouldn’t expect anything less, as the designers at Helly-Hansen are active outdoor enthusiasts themselves.

Finally, if you aren’t sold on these hiking leggings yet, maybe the unique color designs will sway you. Typically with Merino leggings like this, you have your primary black and blue colors, but nothing special. Luckily, Helly-Hansen has added colors like Wild Rose and Taupe to the collection for more selection. So, find the color you like, and grab a pair of these Helly-Hansen LIFA Merino leggings today.

Best Merino Leggings For Daily Use

Icebreaker Women’s Everyday Leggings

100% Merino Wool | Lightweight | Black | Price: $$

Pros: Minimalist, functional design | Versatile construction | Enhanced breathability

Cons: Only available in black | Thin waistband | Must handle fabric with care

What’s comfortable, well-designed, and doesn’t stink after a couple wears? Well, actually, most of the Merino wool leggings I’ve mentioned fit this description. However, the Icebreaker Everyday leggings genuinely shine in the overall versatility category. Thus, making them the best Merino wool leggings for daily use.

Again, the main reason I think these leggings are versatile is the simplistic, minimal design. There are no extra frills with these leggings; they keep you warm and can be worn as long underwear. And while you may not turn in the fashion department, you will more than makeup for it in the comfort department. The 100%, 175 GSM fabric can be used all four seasons to keep you snug and protected, no matter the elements.

Still, suppose you are looking for a pair of Merino leggings with a little more fashion sense. In that case, I’d suggest looking at some of Icebreaker’s other lines of leggings. These are your bare-bones, high-performing leggings that can get you through your daily routine. Yet, suppose your daily routine involves sub-zero temperatures or trekking above the treeline. In that case, you may need to look for a more durable pair.

View Comprehensive Icebreaker Brand Review

Finally, we had to include these leggings because I personally think Icebreaker is a fantastic brand. They have a well-known following in the Merino industry, and you can trust their products. In fact, after you check out their Women’s Merino Everyday Leggings below, you can check out our complete Icebreaker brand profile here.

Best Merino Wool Leggings For Spring

Smartwool Merino 250 Base Layer Bottoms

100% Merino wool | Midweight 250 gsm | Available in 6 colors | Price: $$$

Pros: Updated fit & design | Excellent comfort & protection | Multiple colors

Cons: Not as stretchy as other pairs | Waistband may be tight | Prone to snags

Whether you’re conquering the whitewater rapids or trekking through mountain meadows, spring is the season of outdoor adventure. And, there is one pair of Merino wool leggings that should be part of every spring excursion: the Smartwool 250 base layer bottoms. Don’t take my word for it; you’ll see these Smartwool leggings positively reviewed on nearly every outdoor niche site. So, I figured I’d join the fun!

When it comes to performance and functionality, Smartwool has really hit the nail on the head. These 250 base layer bottoms are an excellent combination of warmth, weight, style, and availability. Honestly, these were some of the pieces of Merino wool clothing that inspired me to start this site with my husband, so they hold a special place in my heart.

However, since first purchasing these leggings over five years ago, Smartwool has done a lot to update the overall fit. Personally, I think the fabric is more supportive now than opposed to previous years. Although, some users feel that the increased support is a bit restrictive and consider the material less flexible than past versions.

View Comprehensive Smartwool Brand Review

So, as I’ve stated before, each of the Merino leggings discussed today may be good for one person and not right for another. Now, I’m not saying these Smartwool 250 Bottoms will be perfect for everyone. But, if you’re a springtime adventurer, you should seriously consider having a pair in your gear closet. Check them out below!

Best Merino Wool Leggings for Summer

Woolly Merino Wool Yoga Shorts

95% Merino, 5% Elastane | Mid-to-Heavyweight 320 GSM | 3 colors available | Price: $

Pros: Ample stretch & support | Heavy fabric improves strength | Affordable

Cons: Lack pockets | Inseam may be too short for some | Sizing issues

Okay, I know it may not be fair to add a pair of booty shorts to this list. But hey, there are no rules, and these are the Merino wool “leggings” I wear during the summer. Let me introduce to you one of my favorite pieces of Merino wool clothing, the Woolly Merino Yoga Short.

Basically, it’s Woolly’s top-selling Merino legging – the one we ranked top overall – but in a shorts version, of course. It still has the same four-way stretch thanks to the 5% elastane blended into the 95% Merino fabric. Also, it is the same heavyweight thickness (320 gsm), which is excellent at regulating your body temperature. Except now, you are using the cooling power of Merino wool instead of the warming power.

However, despite my love for these Woolly shorts (and much of their women’s Merino line), there are a few downsides that I would feel remiss to omit. Some users have reported that the 3-4″ inseam is too short, with some thinking they are too revealing. Personally, I don’t see this complaint in my experience, but it’s worth noting. Moreover, something I have experienced with these shorts is the lack of pockets! Come on, people; everyone needs pockets!

Still, you can rock these yoga shorts for a 4th of July picnic or on a relaxing day at the beach. Thus, making them a versatile piece for any Merino-lover’s summer wardrobe. In addition, they are one of the more inexpensive “leggings” on our list. So even if you’re on a summer budget, you can still rock these Woolly Yoga shorts. Take a look for yourself below!

Best Merino Wool Leggings For Fall

Woolx Stella Leggings

85% Merino, 12% Nylon, 3% Spandex | Heavyweight | 3 colors | Price: $$$$

Woolx Stella Leggings

Pros: Soft heavyweight construction | Functional design | Thick, merino-lined waistband

Cons: Not for hot conditions | Some sizing inconsistencies | A bit pricey

Now that you’ve got a solid pair of tights for summer, it’s time to add to your Merino wool collection for the fall. And, the Woolx Stella leggings are the perfect autumn pair. With heavyweight fabric and enhanced comfort features, these leggings will keep you warm all day long. They go perfectly paired with a light jacket, midweight socks, and a pair of low-rise boots (perhaps a pair made with Merino).

The Stella leggings come packed with performance and comfort features to keep you warm and snug while you watch the leaves change colors. The fabric itself is corespun with nylon for added durability and Spandex for added stretch & support. The high waistband is both fashionable and functional, designed to reduce irritation. Even The thicker fabric is guaranteed to be “never see-through,” so you can keep your privates –  well – private!

Still, why choose the Woolx Stella over some of the other Merino wool leggings on this list? Two words: customer satisfaction. Now, I know that sounds like “sales talk,” but it’s true. Woolx listens to the needs of its customers to create great products. They have the most extended size range (XS to 3X) and inseam lengths (petite, regular, & tall) of any brand. It’s like they understand that there are many female body shapes, and Woolx wants to appreciate every unique figure. And that is customer satisfaction.

So, yeah, I shouldn’t have to say much more. Just go explore the Woolx Stella leggings today.

Best Merino Wool Leggings For Winter

Minus33 Kenai Expedition Merino Wool Bottoms

100% Merino Wool | Heavyweight (400 gsm) | Only available in black | Price: $$$$

Pros: Excellent warmth-to-weight | Minimal design | Surprisingly breathable

Cons: Waistband could be thicker | Not the most form-fitting | Must launder with care

Winter is coming! And these Minus33 Kenai leggings are the perfect pair to keep you warm, comfortable, and protected. And when I mean protected, I mean, really protected. With a fabric weight of 400gsm, these are among the thickest pairs of leggings on the market.

Note: Before we venture further, just know, the Kenai bottoms are the warmest of the warm. They are meant for frigid, sub-zero outdoor activities. So, if you’re in a more moderate climate, you may want to skip to the next pair.

Alright, back to these heavyweight, 100% Merino wool leggings. They are the quintessential base layer for mountaineers, ice climbers, and even backcountry skiers. In fact, that’s why they are called the “Kenai” leggings after the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. It’s a popular adventure area for all sorts of winter wilderness lovers who fish, kayak, sightsee, and even dog sled.

However, you don’t have to be an extreme athlete to enjoy their features. The Kenai bottoms have flatlock seams, ribbed cuffs, and even a Merino-covered waistband for improved comfort. Although, I wish the latter could be a tad thicker for added support.

Still, when it comes to high-performance outdoor gear, Minus33 is a reputable brand that makes quality products. They have been a tried and true brand in the industry, and you should give them a peek today. Heck, grab a matching base layer shirt while you’re at it.

Honorable Mentions

Patagonia Women’s Capilene® Air Bottoms

51% Merino, 49% recycled polyester | Lightweight (190 gsm) | 3 colors available | Price: $$$$

Patagonia Women's Capilene Air Bottoms

Pros: Lightweight but warm | Great outdoor versatility | Sustainably manufactured

Cons: Not the best standalone piece | Delicate fabric | Potential thigh chafing

Alright, I know what you’re thinking. Shouldn’t Patagonia be a little bit higher on the list? Well, your judging tone aside, you’re probably right. It’s just that I couldn’t think of one category to put them in. However, I have one major issue with these Capilene® Air Bottoms: I can’t actually wear them as leggings.

Still, that’s not a knock on their quality. The Patagonia Women’s Capilene® Air Bottoms are more of an under-base layer, not a standalone garment. The waffle-like grid reminds me of old-school long johns, but it’s there to trap in pockets of heat to keep you warm. That’s why at only a lightweight 190 GSM, these leggings can protect you down to freezing temperatures.

Yet the reason we love these Patagonia Women’s Capilene® Air Bottoms is the brand’s commitment to sustainability. And yes, Patagonia has been a subject of criticism in the past. However, they still do more for the environment than most outdoor brands. They do things like using RWS-certified wool and recycled polyester in their fabric. Heck, they believe in transparency so much that they openly display the exact location the clothing was made. In the case of the Capilene® Air Bottoms, they were manufactured in Hong Kong’s Honrich Knitwear Factory. They believe in their people and their suppliers, which is why we believe in their products.

Although Patagonia’s Merino wool products have been cycled in the past, they nevertheless offer this fabulous pair of leggings for three-season adventurers. The Capilene® Air Bottoms make our list an honorable mention; however, as I mentioned before, it’s because they don’t fit one title. So, see which category they fit in for you!

Meriwool Women’s Base Layer Leggings

100% Merino Wool | Midweight 250 GSM | 10 colors available | Price: $

Pros: Relatively affordable | Various patterns and colors | Excellent base layer usage

Cons: Design needs updating | Best for moderate temperatures

I’ve been a big fan of Meriwool products since first diving into the Merino wool world. Something stood out to me in my initial brand research; it was their company values. Their website states that they design each piece with three factors in mind: comfort, performance, and affordability. And let me tell you, their women’s base layer leggings meet their high standards.

As for comfort, you really can’t beat the supersoft, 16.5-micron Merino fibers. They feel almost invisible on your skin and reduce any potential irritation. As for comfort from the elements, Meriwool has created three different fabric weight options to suit your needs.

There are 190-gsm, lightweight Merino leggings that are good for summer nights and transition seasons. Then, the ones pictured above, the midweight 250-gsm, are perfect for both leggings or a base layer. And then, there are the 400-gsm heavyweight leggings meant as a more standalone piece or winter base layer.

So, onto Meriwool’s next design factor: performance. Although the idea of performance may change from one person to another, I feel that these leggings embody the notion of performance through functionality. They may not be flashy (unless you get one of the striped ones), but they work as a solid base layer or standalone piece.

And onto the final factor, affordability. While the prices of the various fabric weights differ (and proportionally, at that), Meriwool legging’s price lies below the industry average. All without sacrificing on quality. And that’s the power of Merino wool clothing: comfort, performance, and affordability.

Well, that last one can be tricky, but not with Meriwool.

Allbirds Women’s Natural Legging

43% Tencel™, 30% Nylon, 18% Merino, 9% Elastane | Midweight | 4 colors | Price: $$$

Pros: Functional athletic design | Pocket & internal pull-cord | Focus on sustainability

Cons: Does not fit all body types | Waistband may rise too high for some

You may know Allbirds from their flagship Merino wool sneakers, but that’s not why we are geeking over them today. Instead, I want to talk to you about their functional, fashionable, and sustainable Natural Legging. Let’s take a closer look.

So, first and foremost, these are some of the most functional leggings on our list. They have extreme athletic performance and fantastic support from their finely-engineered construction. The outside seams reduce skin irritation and improve performance. At the same time, the wide waistband is supportive but blends nicely into the overall design.

When it comes to the fashion aspect of Merino leggings, Allbirds has to be on the activewear Mt. Rushmore. These leggings are offered in black and gray, but limited edition colors are released regularly. In other words, you can wear these leggings to the gym, to the store, to work, to the wilderness. Basically, anywhere leggings are acceptable (I wouldn’t suggest you wear them to a wedding, but you do you).

Finally, what Allbirds does best: sustainability. These leggings are crafted from high-strength recycled materials, including 18% ZQ-certified Merino. But there’s more. Allbirds notes that these leggings are carbon neutral after purchasing carbon offsets, yet production alone is responsible for 14.5 kg CO2e. For reference, that the same carbon footprint as your exhaling breath for two weeks. Honestly, it’s not a lot, but Allbirds does their part to commit to the environment.

In summary, if you’re looking for a high-functioning, highly-fashionable, and highly-sustainable pair of Merino leggings, I think you should give Allbirds a shot.

Alright, I’ll keep this short since you don’t want to hear a long-winded intro about how I love Merino wool (it’s not like those ridiculous recipe articles). Simply put, I ranked the best Merino wool hoodies for women. I looked at how they fit, how they feel, and how they perform. Thus, providing you with the ultimate list of Merino wool hoodies for you to choose from. Check it out!

Quick Buying Criteria

Before we dive into my favorite women’s Merino wool hoodies, I want to make sure you understand how we chose them. And how you should choose the one that’s right for you.

So, we put together a quick buying criteria guide so that you can better understand how to pick out the best Merino wool hoodie tailored to all your needs.

Fit

No matter how miraculous Merino wool may be, if your hoodie doesn’t fit you right, you aren’t going to be happy. It’s essential to gauge the type of fit to match your needs. However, not all companies rate their fit in the same way, even varying between brand collections.

Therefore, I’ve taken the time to classify the fits of these women’s Merino hoodies into four normalized categories from tightest to loosest: athletic, slim, regular, and relaxed.

Expand Complete Merino Wool Hoodie Fit Criteria

Athletic/Fitted: Better for a base layer hoodie as the form-fitting construction allows for outer layers without bunching. Also, athletic hoodie cuts are great for running and working out in the transitional seasons (spring & autumn)

Slim/Semi-Fitted: Not completely form-fitting, but usually tapered at the waist. Slim-fit hoodies work great for everyday use or even within a set of layers. However, if you have more of an “apple shape” body type, it may be slightly constricting around the midsection.

Regular: Also known as standard fit, a regular fit is the most basic fit. It’s not too tight, but also not too loose. There is some drape, but it shouldn’t feel like you are swimming in fabric. Regular fit hoodies are great for outer layers or standalone pieces but may bunch up if you use them underneath a jacket.

Relaxed: Just as the name implies, relaxed-fit hoodies provide the loosest fit of them all. They tend to be flowing and drape nicely, offering a cloud-like feel. Unfortunately, they aren’t the best for layering since the fabric can bunch up. However, depending on the specific sweatshirt, I feel they can also be the coziest.

Fabric

After you’ve found your fit, you’ll want to make sure that the hoodie fabric matches your needs. When it comes to Merino wool, I typically look for three key metrics: Merino percentage, fabric weight, and fiber diameter.

Expand Complete Merino Wool Fabric Buying Criteria

Merino Wool Percentage

Sheep Icon

More Merino equals a better feel but less strength. However, since Merino can be a bit delicate, pure Merino wool hoodies may not be durable. If you are planning on heavy hoodie usage (like working outside), look for Merino-synthetic blends.

Fabric Thickness

Layering logo

Typically, a higher fabric weight means more warmth and durability. But, also, it means less breathability and a higher price. For 4-season use, look for midweight fabrics between 180-250 GSM for temperature regulation.

Fiber Diameter

Needle and Thread Logo

Lower micron diameters feel softer against the skin. However, they can be a bit more delicate and prone to pilling. Not all companies classify their Merino fiber diameter, so it’s essential to listen to other users when it comes to comfort.

Features

Suppose you’ve determined the fit and fabric that works out best for you. If that’s the case, it’s now time to make sure you have all the necessary features for your hoodie. Check the image below for some standard Merino wool sweatshirt features that you may encounter.

  • Hood Fit
  • Closure Type (zipper)
  • Tags & Logos
  • Seam Construction
  • Sleeve Style & Length
  • Pocket Design
  • Hem lLength
  • Thumbholes, Cuffs, etc.

Note: If you are looking for a specific feature but can’t find it on a hoodie you like, simply reach out to me. I’ll be happy to help you locate your perfect Merino wool hoodie. Also, many brands slightly tweak their designs across catalogs and seasons, so I should be able to point you in the right direction.

Best Overall Merino Wool Hoodie For Women

Woolly Women’s Merino Pro-Knit Wool Hoodie

100% Merino Wool | 250 GSM | Full Zip| Slim Fit | Available in Black | Price: $$

Blue Women's Merino Wool Hoodie

Pros: Versatile construction | Midweight 4-season protection | Enhanced comfort features

Cons: Small thumb holes | Shorter length not for everyone | Questionable longevity

It was a tough decision which women’s merino wool hoodie to rank first. But, going back to the buying criteria of fit, fabric, and features (in combination with price point), I have to go with the Woolly Merino Pro-Knit Hoodie at the top.

What I love most about this hoodie is how it hugs my body. It’s not too loose or too tight, but the slim fit tapers nicely on my torso. In addition, the overall design makes it versatile enough to wear with leggings or any outfit for that matter. Right now, it’s one of the most common pieces in my Merino daily wear rotation.

As for the fabric, Woolly uses midweight, Woolmark-certified Merino wool. It feels soft against my skin, but not to the point where I don’t know I’m wearing a sweatshirt at all. The only real issue I may encounter (but haven’t yet) is that pure Merino wool clothing tends to have a shorter lifespan. But as for now, this pro-knit hoodie is still holding firm.

Oh yeah, I can’t forget to mention the fantastic features too! There are lined pockets to keep your hands warm, a zipper cover, so your chin doesn’t get snagged, and even thumb holes to keep your sleeves in place. Although, for the latter, I would like to see larger holes since they are a bit snug around my thumbs.

To sum up, the Woolly Pro-Knit Merino wool hoodie is my overall favorite. It hits all the buying criteria and comes in at a comparatively affordable price. Make sure to check it out today!

Best Value Women’s Merino Hoodie

Meriwool Women’s Base Layer Hoodie

100% Merino wool | 190 GSM | 16.5 Microns | 1/4 Zip | Athletic Fit | Charcoal | Price: $

Pros: Most affordable Merino hoodie | Super soft fabric | Form-fit increases layering ability

Cons: Better cold-weather options | Fit may be too snug for some | Delicate

As you may already know, Merino wool hoodies can be a bit pricey. I mean, triple digits for a sweatshirt? It’s crazy! Luckily there are a few affordable options on the market that don’t skimp on overall quality. The Meriwool Women’s Base Layer hoodie is one of these options.

While this women’s wool sweatshirt may not have all the fancy features as some of the other choices on our list, it is still made from super-soft, high-performing Merino. The 16.5-micron fiber diameter and lightweight 190 GSM fabric thickness feel luxurious against your skin, but it doesn’t cost luxury prices.

Yet, the thing I love most about this Meriwool hoodie is the overall fit. It’s more form-fitting and slim, making it perfect to wear as a base layer. Although, you can still wear it as an outer layer. There is plenty of room underneath for a t-shirt so that your clothes don’t get bunched up.

However, there are few factors to consider with this Merino wool hoodie. First, if you’re planning on wearing it standalone, it’s not the warmest of the pack. Also, if you are more of an “apple shape,” the fit may be a bit snug. These aren’t deal-breakers by any means, but just things to keep in mind.

Overall, I highly suggest this Meriwool Women’s Base Layer Hoodie (and all Meriwool apparel) for those looking to experience the power of Merino wool without breaking the bank.

Best Women’s Merino Wool Hoodie For Daily Use

Icebreaker Quantum II Long Sleeve Zip Hood

98% Merino wool / 2% Elastane | 260 GSM | Full Zip | Slim Fit | Multiple Colors | Price: $$$$$

Pros: Improved comfort features | Fantastic fit | Multiple functional pockets

Cons: Most expensive hoodie on our list | Inner pockets prone to wear | Sizing discrepancies

If I had to use one word to describe this Icebreaker Quantum II hoodie, it would be technical. However, you can tell that every aspect of this hoodie is engineered carefully to provide you with maximum comfort and protection. I mean, do you expect anything less from Icebreaker?

Let’s start with the overall cut and design. The athletic, form-fitting drape works well as a base layer or mid-layer. But unlike other hoodies on this list, there is a valuable drop tail hem to keep your lower back and butt cool. It also serves to reduce waist ride up for high-movement activities. Of course, the same thing can be said about the fitted hood and the covered thumb holes.

Alright, on to the comfort features. Icebreaker uses flatlock seams and merino-lined pockets to minimize irritation and maximize satisfaction. But they go a step further with the Quantum II. The seam construction around the shoulders is in the front as opposed to the top. So, if you are wearing a backpack, you won’t have any annoying stitching rubbing against your skin.

However, the attention to detail and enhanced features are also why this Merino hoodie is the most expensive on this list. But, if you have dollars to spare and want a top-of-the-line hoodie from a reputable Merino brand, the Icebreaker Quantum II should be your first choice.

Best Women’s Merino Hoodie For Travel

Minus33 Trailbreaker Midweight Hoodie

100% Merino | 230 GSM | 18.5 Micron | UPF 50+ | Full Zip | Regular Fit | Black/Charcoal | Price: $$$

Gray and Black Womens Trailbreaker hoodie

Pros: “Goldilocks” temperature regulation | Packs small | Two-tone design

Cons: Longer sleeve length | Pricey | Limited color options

If you’re an avid traveler, you understand the value of packability. The more space you have in your bag, the more adventures you can embark upon. The midweight, easily packable Minus33 Trailblazer hoodie is a fantastic option for those living out of a carry-on.

As with all of Minus33’s midweight apparel, this hoodie hits the sweet spot in the temperature regulation department. The 235 GSM fabric thickness will keep you warm in chilly conditions, but not to the point where you sweat your butt off. Plus, the 18.5-micron, 100% Merino wool construction will keep you comfy, no matter how long your layover may be.

Moreover, this Trailblazer hoodie is packed with essential travel features. The hood is slim fit but not too baggy, making it perfect to curl up for a nap on the plane. The flatlock seams, tagless labels, and raglan-style sleeves improve comfort no matter your location. Heck, there is even a zipped chest pocket to keep your passport safe.

And, unlike other Merino wool hoodies, the two-tone color scheme is fashionable and versatile. Although, I would love to see more color options available for those like myself who like mixing and matching.

Overall, whether you’re a long-term digital nomad or weekend traveler, the Minus33 Trailbreaker hoodie is a necessary addition to your travel wardrobe.

Best Merino Wool Hoodie For Hiking

Ibex Women’s Indie Hoodie

100% Merino wool | 185 GSM | 18.5 Microns | 1/4 Zip | Athletic Fit | 3 Colors| Price: $$$$

Ibex Womens Indie Hoodie

Pros: Perfect for layering | Tight-fitting hood | 4-season usage

Cons: Not a lot of hip coverage | Reported sizing inconsistencies | Pricey

Do you actually love hiking, or does your Tinder profile just say you love hiking? Either way, the Ibex Indie Hoodie is an excellent piece of Merino Wool Gear for all. It may look like another basic hoodie, but this base layer was designed for ultimate trail comfort and protection.

Crafted from 18.5-micron, 185 GSM Merino wool, this lightweight hoodie offers excellent outdoor performance. It will protect you in alpine conditions and keep you cozy around the campfire. In addition, if you’re planning on hot-weather hiking, this hoodie will protect you from UV rays without overheating your body. Pretty cool, right?

Moreover, it’s the attention to the performance features of why I love the Indie hoodie. Firstly, the scuba-style hood fits great under a helmet (sort of like a skull cap). Secondly, the no-tag construction, front shoulder seams, and thumbholes keep this base layer in place no matter how active you are. When combining these features, the Ibex Indie Hoodie offers maximum outdoor comfort and protection.

You may not mind, but I always like to have a place to put my phone. Nevertheless, the one major quip I have with this base layer is that there are no pockets. Also, some users have reported the shorter length doesn’t fully cover their hips. Still, since I’m a short woman, I didn’t experience this issue.

To sum up, if you want maximum performance and comfort in the backcountry, the Ibex Women’s Indie Hoodie should be your top choice. Take a look below, or check out our comprehensive Ibex review to learn more!

Most Unique Merino Wool Hoodie For Women

Toad&Co Merino Heartfelt Hoodie

100% Merino wool | Midweight | No closure | Relaxed Fit | Seasonal Color Options | Price: $$$

Pros: Unique style and cut | Comfy drape | Great versatility

Cons: No closure options | Not as soft as other hoodies | Must launder with care

It’s time to take a departure from our typical performance hoodies and dive into something a bit more interesting. The Toad&Co Women’s Merino Heartfelt Hoodie is a unique hooded sweater you may want to add to your comfort collection.

The fabric itself is not your typical jersey knit that you might see with other Merino wool sweatshirts, even though Toad&Co lists it as such. Instead, it’s more of felted wool, but not actually felt. So it’s pretty tricky to explain, really. Still, to me, it feels like more of a traditional wool sweater than a performance fabric.

What I love the most about this hoodie is its unique style. It’s basically a hooded cardigan, making it perfect for bumming around the house or even getting some work done in the coffee shop. However, there is no closure, so you may want to pair it with a belt if you like a tighter fit.

Also, as with all Merino wool hoodies, you have to launder the Heartfelt cardigan with care. If you wash it in warm water or accidentally throw it in the dryer, it may be ruined.

Overall, the heartfelt hoodie is one of the most unique choices on our list, especially for those who prefer stylish Merino clothing. Keep an eye out because Toad&Co often releases new colors and styles of this hoodie cardigan.

Best 1/2 Zip Women’s Merino Wool Hoodie

Smartwool Merino 250 Base Layer 1/2 Zip Hoodie

100% Merino wool | 250 GSM | 1/2 Zip | Slim Fit | Multiple Colors | Price: $$$$

Pros: Fantastic warmth-to-weight ratio | Several layering options | Trusted Smartwool brand

Cons: Hood not suitable for helmets | Neck is a bit loose | Style needs update

I’m a Smartwool fangirl through and through. I trust nearly all of their products and have yet to have any issues with their customer service. All of their collections are packed with performance features, and they listen to their customer’s feedback. So, I couldn’t neglect the Smartwool 250 1/2 Zip Baselayer hoodie in a list of women’s Merino wool hoodies.

I have to start out with the midweight Merino wool material. Smartwool is world-renowned for its 250 GSM fabric. It’s one of their top-selling materials, and for a good reason. Not only will it keep you warm in the winter, but it will also regulate your body temperature if you start to overheat. Plus, with this hoodie, you can vent yourself by simply adjusting the half-zipper.

Another great design feature of this hoodie is the fit. The paneling and seams wrap around your body for better support. And the hood itself is somewhat form-fitting. However, I don’t feel it’s tight enough to wear underneath a ski helmet.

Yet, as I like to say, there is always room for improvement. The neck construction is a bit loose, especially since I’m petite. Also, I’m not a big fan of the color block patterns on the sleeves. They are a bit too loud for my liking if I’m being candid.

However, I still think this Smartwool 250 Base Layer hoodie is an excellent choice for my fellow female adventurers. You get a trusted Merino brand with a long track record of performance.

Best Women’s Merino Hoodie For Skiing

Helly-Hansen LIFA Merino Midweight Baselayer Hoodie

100% Merino exterior / 100% LIFA interior | 225 GSM | Pullover | Regular Fit | 2 Colors | Price: $$

Pros: Engineered 2-in-1 construction | Added performance features | Affordable

Cons: Not the most stylish | Limited colors | Minimal odor resistance

If you’re an avid skier or snowboarder and haven’t heard of Helly-Hansen, you’ve been missing out. They create high-quality, high-performing apparel that is perfect for life on the slopes. And, their LIFA Merino Midweight Base Layer hoodie is one of our favorite pieces from them.

What sets this hoodie apart from the other options on this list is the LIFA Merino fabric. The interior is crafted with 100% LIFA, a synthetic material that helps to wick moisture away from your skin. On the other hand, the exterior is formulated with pure Merino wool, adding an extra warmth element. In other words, this hoodie is engineered for outdoor performance.

Although the interior is synthetic, it’s not as odor-resistant as pure Merino wool. However, the LIFA material does make this base layer hoodie more durable than other competitors. Plus, the 225 GSM thickness offers an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio, so it won’t weigh you down as your floating through the powder.

However, there is one minor change I would like to see added. The hood is tight-fitting, meant to be used under the helmet, but there are no adjustment strings. Thus, I experienced a bit of bunching.

To sum up, this Helly-Hansen LIFA Merino base layer hoodie is meant for high-performance activities. So, if you’re planning your next ski trip, make sure to check it out!

Best Ultralight Women’s Merino Wool Hoodie

Ridge Merino Solstice Lightweight Wool Hoodie

87% Merino / 13% Nylon | 145 GSM | 17.5 Microns | UPF 30+ | Pullover | Relaxed Fit | 4 Colors | Price: $$

Ridge Merino Women's Solstice Hoodie

Pros: Extremely breathable | Functional oversized hood | Relaxed, cloud-like drape

Cons: Not great for cold weather | Hood drawstrings may fall out | Wrinkles after heavy use

Hear me out: you have to have a summer sweatshirt. Why? Well, if you’re going to be basking in the sun all day, you’re going to need full-body protection from UV rays. Therefore the best Merino wool sun hoodie I have is the Ridge Merino Solstice Hoodie.

And I already know what you’re thinking: “um, aren’t I going to be hot?” The short answer: no. Ridge Merino has crafted the Solstice hoodie with ultralight, 145 GSM fabric. That’s less than two pieces of paper thick! So, there is plenty of breathability and temperature regulation, even in blistering summer conditions. Although, since it is so thin, it tends to wrinkle a bit after heavy use.

Moreover, many ultralight Merino apparel can be delicate. But again, Ridge Merino has engineered their fabric with a small amount of nylon to improve durability. It still feels soft as the relaxed, flowing drape moves with you, even with the addition of synthetic material.

However, the aspect of the Solstice hoodie that I love most is, well, the hood! The oversized hood can be worn in several different ways and fits over a standard baseball cap nicely. Heck, it will even easily cover your eyes, too, if you want to take a midday nap on the trail. In fact, the only part of the hood I don’t love is the drawstrings, which I replaced after they fell out in the wash.

Overall, I highly recommend the Ridge Merino Solstice Hoodie for all you three-season adventurers out there. And full disclosure, I’m wearing mine right now as I’m typing this!

Best Heavyweight Merino Wool Hoodie For Women

Woolx Zoe Zip Up Heavyweight Hoodie

100% Merino wool | 400 GSM | Full Zip |Semi-Fitted | 2 Colors | Price: $$$

Pros: Warmest hoodie on the list | Supportive fit | Excellent next-to-skin comfort

Cons: Not as “bulky” as some prefer | Limited extra features | Only available in black

Many of the hoodies that I’ve mentioned today a light to midweight. However, if you’re looking for a sweatshirt that doesn’t require additional layers for warmth, the Woolx Zoe hoodie should be your top choice.

At first glance, you may not think this hoodie looks heavy. It’s not as bulky or fuzzy as some people may like in a heavyweight hoodie. Yet, the 400 GSM pure Merino wool fabric is the thickest on this list. Thus, offering excellent warmth without the need for extra layers. And if you are looking for a bit of puff, you should look for brushed fleece instead of Merino.

The Woolx Zoe Zip Up is listed as slim fit, and I have to agree. It is tapered near the torso, but not to the point where it’s restrictive. And if you are looking for a looser, you can always size up. Way up! Unlike other Merino wool brands, Woolx has sizes all the way up to 3XL. So, no matter your body type, you can enjoy the power of Merino.

Still, since I love the overall design, I would love to see Woolx expand its color selection a bit more. Currently, it only comes in black or charcoal gray. In addition, I’d like to see an extra zipper pocket hidden inside to store my phone. Obviously, these minor details aren’t deal-breakers, but things I personally would like to see added.

To sum up, if you need a heavy winter zip-up that is uber-comfortable, then you should consider the Woolx Zoe Heavyweight hoodie. And, if you don’t believe me, you can look at the 200+ five-star reviews from other satisfied customers.

Final Note About Women’s Merino Wool Hoodies

Long Underwear Buying Considerations

Insulation

If you’re hitting the slopes, you’re going to need to stay warm (no, duh, right?). Maintaining a proper temperature is not merely about material thickness, although there is a strong correlation between them. It also has to do with the breathability and moisture-wicking ability of the material since you will most likely be sweating as you’re riding tips up through the fresh powder. If you are sweating too much, your skin will cool down, and you’ll be freezing. Remember that the thicker the fabric weight, the warmer it will be, and the less breathable.

Comfort

Apart from being warm, you should look for long underwear that’s tight but not restrictive. It should be supportive of all the right parts. If it’s too snug, you’re going to be super uncomfortable as you try to maneuver around the mountain. Still, if it’s too loose, you may get bunching and clinging in all the wrong places.

On top of the tightness, you should want your bottoms to feel smooth on your skin. Not only does this have to do with the fabric makeup, but also the stitching and waistband construction. Look for clothing with flatlock seams and a durable waistband to avoid any unnecessary irritation.

Length

Long underwear does not always mean it has to go down to your ankles. In fact, when you wear an ankle-length base layer in addition to a heavy sock may make it more uncomfortable when you try to strap on your boots. Also, boot bunching may be more than just irritation, as it can be a prime chafing area and may reduce the blood flow to your feet. We aren’t saying that full-length underwear is not great (actually, we prefer it), but the overall length is definitely something to consider.

Function

Combining insulation, comfort, and length, we have the most critical factor in long underwear for skiing: function. You should look for bottoms that provide you with the best practicality for your style. We mean that the leading factor in purchasing skiing underwear is that they keep you on the mountain. We’ve come up with a simple rule: the best underwear are ones that you never feel.

Merino Vs. Synthetic Long Underwear For Skiing

We’d like to note that we are a website dedicated to Merino Wool Gear (hence the name), but we want to be objective with our reviews. It’s essential to look at the positives and negatives of Merino Wool as compared to other synthetic long underwear.

Merino wool is one of the best fabrics for keeping your microclimate – the area between your clothing and skin – warm. It wicks away moisture from your skin and holds your traps air and water vapor within the material. Merino also has odor-resistant properties, is incredibly soft on your skin, and can be versatile in any environment. Some of the downsides are that it can be pricey and can have durability issues if not cared for properly.

Synthetic materials like nylon and polyester are incredibly breathable and quick-drying, which is excellent if you wipe out and get snow up your pant leg. They tend to be more durable and less expensive than Merino wool, as well. While synthetics don’t always provide the best insulation, it’s often enough to keep you warm. As the material is made from petroleum, it’s hydrophobic, meaning that it repels water and attracts oils. Thus, the smelly, oily secretions from your body tend to linger in the fabric. On top of that, it’s very environmentally friendly.

What’s Best For Skiing?

The decision of which long underwear material you should wear on the slopes is ultimately up to you. If you favor durability and a little bit of extra cash in your wallet, you may want to be on team synthetic. But we honestly prefer Merino, as we believe temperature regulation and comfort are the most crucial underwear factors while skiing.

We will focus mainly on the top Merino long underwear for a day on the slopes due to our preferences. Still, we’ll also go over some reliable non-Merino options for those of you who prefer synthetics. Let’s get started!

Best Long Underwear For Skiing: Tie

Icebreaker Merino 200 Oasis Leggings

100% Merino wool | 200 gsm | Slim fit | Price: $$$

Icebreaker Oasis 200 Leggings Mens and Womens in Gray

Men’s Oasis Leggings | Women’s Oasis Leggings

Pros: Fantastic warmth-to-weight ratio | High performance | Sleek and stylish

Cons: User-reported fabric issues | The waistband is a bit snug

View Icebreaker Sizing Charts & Brand Review

Style meets functionality with Icebreaker’s Merino 200 Oasis Thermal Leggings for men and women. The 100% Merino wool jersey fabric is extra soft on your skin and offers ample breathability to regulate your temperature.

We love the choice of midweight, 200 GSM fabric density as it is sufficient enough to keep you warm in an ever-fluctuating alpine environment. Also, we feel that these Oasis leggings are one of the most multifunctional options on our list, as you can wear them as a standalone piece.

Although no pair of long underwear is perfect, we’ve seen a couple of reported issues. Some users have claimed that the waistband feels too tight, and others say that the fabric wears over time. It appears as the former may be due to personal preference, and the latter to improper care, as we have not experienced these issues personally.

Overall, we feel that any clothing crafted by Icebreaker is worth its weight in gold. Okay, maybe that’s a bit of a stretch, but Icebreaker should still be crowned co-king of the mountain with their Oasis 200 Thermal Leggings.

Smartwool 250 Base Layer Bottoms

100% Merino | 250 gsm | Slim fit | Price: $$$$

Smartwool Classic Thermal Bottoms Men and Women

Smartwool Men’s Thermal Bottoms | Smartwool Women’s Thermal Bottoms

Pros: Excellent thermoregulation | Design improves comfort | Trusted outdoor brand

Cons: May stretch with improper care | Relatively slow-drying

View Smartwool Sizing Charts & Company Profile

Our co-best pair of Merino wool long underwear is none other than the Smartwool Merino 250 Bottoms. They are a bit thicker than their co-champion, making them slightly better in the warmth category. Still, despite being 250 GSM, these Merino bottoms are surprisingly breathable, offering plenty of temperature regulation as you navigate the mountain all day long.

The actual reason that we love these long underwear is Smartwool’s attention to detail within the design. It’s the little things like a thick Merino-lined waistband for maximum comfort and garment-wide flatlock seams to reduce irritation. Smartwool even redesigned their back gusset pattern due to user feedback, allowing for a much more supportive fit.

The fit is not too tight either, so that you can wear these bottoms as a mid-layer. But be careful as the fabric may deform over time with improper care.

Overall, it’s a no-brainer to put a trusted Merino brand like Smartwool as the co-gold medalist when it comes to the best long underwear for skiing.

Note: If you’re looking for a similar construction and reputation as the Smartwool 250 Bottoms, but don’t need as thick of fabric, check out their 150 bottoms. It’s the same design but doesn’t offer as much warmth protection.

Best ¾ Length Merino Long Underwear For Skiing

Ridge Merino Men’s Aspect 3/4 Bottoms

84% Merino, 16% Nylon | 180 gsm | 18.5 microns | Slim-to-Athletic fit | Price: $$

Ridge Merino 3/4 Aspect Bottoms

Pros: Excellent breathability | Comparatively more durable | Relatively inexpensive

Cons: Not as warm as other options | May be tight around larger calves

View Ridge Merino Sizing Charts & Company Profile

Suppose you’re sick of the sock-underwear-boot irritation combo but still want the protection provided with long underwear. In that case, the Ridge Merino 3/4-Length bottoms may be your best bet. They offer a supportive but not too restrictive fit. Their 180 GSM fabric provides sufficient warmth for sunny days on the mountain.

One aspect we love about the Aspect – and a lot of Ridge Merino clothing in general – is the dedication to the clothing’s longevity. By itself, Merino wool is sometimes too delicate to withstand the normal wear and tear of long skiing underwear. Ridge Merino utilizes an industry-leading (m)Force Merino technology, spinning the soft woolen fibers around a stronger nylon thread to improve durability and longevity. You get all the benefits of Merino and minimize some of the disadvantages in the process.

The calf holds are great for these specific thermals, but they may be a bit tight for those with tree trunks for legs. Also, for shorter people, the 3/4 length is more like 7/8, so keep that in mind.

Still, you truly can’t beat the price-to-quality ratio that Ridge Merino provides with this skiing underwear. They may be 3/4 length, but they are 1/2 the price of most of the competitors. We highly suggest the Ridge Merino Aspect leggings if you want to feel comfortable on the mountain without breaking the bank.

Minus33 Women’s Osceola 3/4 Bottoms

100% Merino wool | 235 gsm | 18.5 microns | Standard fit | Price: $$$

Minus33 Womens Osceola Three Quarter Merino Wool Bottoms Black

Pros: Soft & comfortable fit | Ideal length for ski boots | Good temperature regulation

Cons: User-reported sizing issues | Stretches with excessive use

View Minus33 Sizing Charts & Company Profile

Minus33 has crafted a simplistic yet aesthetically-pleasing pair of ladies leggings with these Osceola Midweight Wool 3/4 Bottoms. The 235 GSM fabric will keep your legs warm on the mountain but still allow for plenty of room to breathe.

The Osceola leggings’ minimalistic design may appear basic at first, but Minus33 has put so much detail into every inch of them. The waistband is covered and rises higher, sitting around the belly button. The gusset construction and flatlock seams reduce irritation and chafing. On top of that, the 3/4 inseam reduces any annoyance from “boot bulk.”

It’s important to note that these Merino bottoms are not as tight-fitting as many of the other pairs on our list. They have a much more relaxed fit, which is why some users have reported that they run a bit large. Minus33 suggests that you size down if you are looking for a more athletic fit.

Overall, we think the Osceola Minus33 3/4 bottoms aren’t just a fantastic pair of long underwear on the slopes. They also work well in the yoga studio, CrossFit gym, or even just lounging around the house.

Most Affordable Merino Long Underwear For Skiing

Meriwool Merino 250 Base Layer Bottoms

100% Merino wool | 250 gsm | 18.5 microns | Regular-to-Loose fit | Price: $$

Men’s Base Layer 250 | Women’s Base Layer 250

Pros: Excellent price-to-quality ratio | Soft to the touch | Versatile

Cons: Stretches with heavy use | User-reported excessive pilling

View Meriwool Sizing Charts & Company Profile

The price of lift tickets is high, so if you want to hang out all day on the mountain, you will have to cut back the cost somewhere else. With the Meriwool Merino 250 Base Layer Bottoms, you’re able to save a little bit of money without sacrificing warmth. It’s the perfect combination for a fun, wallet-friendly day on the slopes.

The 18.5-micron, 100% Merino wool feels super soft on the skin, while the 250 GSM fabric provides excellent temperature regulation. At the end of a long day, they won’t even stink either. You can use them again when you conquer the fresh powder the next day!

The fit is a little baggier than we expected, and for us, it seemed to be a bit tighter around our thighs than it was our waist. We didn’t see this as an issue, but it’s just a feeling we weren’t used to. According to some users, the fabric itself stretches with heavy use, but that’s typical with pure Merino clothing.

In the end, the Meriwool 250 Base Layer Bottoms are super-efficient in what they are meant to do: keeping your legs – and bank account – protected. Check out the variety of color options for both men & women below.

Best Long Underwear For Backcountry Skiing

Minus33 Katmai & Kenai Expedition Wool Bottoms

100% Merino wool | 400 gsm | 18.5 microns | Regular fit | Price: $$$$

Minus33 Expedition Weight Merino Wool Bottoms Men and Women Black

Men’s Katmai Expedition Bottoms | Women’s Kenai Expedition Bottoms

Pros: Warmest pair on this list | Soft next-to-skin comfort | Surprisingly breathable

Cons: User-reported fit issues | Expensive

View Minus33 Sizing Charts & Company Profile

Skiing in the backcountry can be exhilarating. It’s like you are a polar explorer, testing your limits against both the beauty and brutality of nature to find that perfect line. Venturing into these uncharted territories often means unknown weather conditions. That’s where the Katmai and Kenai Expedition bottoms by Minus33 come in handy.

These Merino wool bottoms have a fabric thickness of 400 GSM, nearly twice as much as any of the other pairs on our list. For reference, that’s about six pieces of paper thick. You know they will provide excellent insulation, but the surprising thing is that they are also breathable despite their thickness. The soft, 18.5-micron fibers also feel super soft on your skin. The combination of protection and comfort sometimes makes it feel like you aren’t wearing any long underwear at all!

The fit itself is a bit relaxed, which has led some users to report sizing issues, but it’s not anything we have seen. Also, they are the most expensive pair of thermals on our list. But, with features like flatlock seams, structured gussets, a covered waistband, and 400 GSM of insulation, we feel like they are priced appropriately.

So, if you want to take an expedition into the unknown, make sure to stay comfortable and protected with these Minus33 Expedition long underwear.

Best Non-Merino Long Underwear For Skiing

Arc’teryx Rho LT Bottoms

Torrent: 84% Polyester, 16% Elastane | 175 gsm | Next-To-Skin fit | Price: $$$

Men’s Rho LT Bottoms | Women’s Rho LT Bottoms

Pros: Comfortable & snug | Unexpectedly warm | Excellent durability

Cons: Somewhat “staticy” | Limited versatility

In these reviews, we typically only focus on Merino wool gear (hence the site name). But, we feel like we would be doing you a disservice by writing an article about the best long underwear for skiing and not include the Rho LT from Arc’teryx. These super lightweight leggings are shockingly warm, and they hug your legs in all the right places.

With a well-established outdoor brand like Arc’teryx, you know you’ll be buying a finely engineered product, and the Rho LTs are no exception. The Torrent fleece fabric (84% polyester and 16% elastane – is brushed during manufacturing to give a soft next-to-skin feel and speed up moisture transfer away from your body. The elastic stretch and articulated pattern offer a fit that works with you as you move rather than against you. Heck, there is even a well-designed crotch gusset and zipper pocket!

As we try to remain objective with our reviews, it’s important to detail some of the cons. There have been reports that due to the Rho LT’s tight fit and brushed fleece, they offer limited breathability. These bottoms are also on the Merino spectrum’s pricier side, but we think the price point is fair with the sheer amount of extra features.

Overall though, the Arc’teryx Rho LT Bottoms are one of the most form-fitting, high-performing pair of thermals that we’ve tried. That’s why they make our list as the top pair of non-merino long underwear for skiing for both men and women.

Best Long Underwear For Skiing: Honorable Mentions

Ortovox 185 Rock’N’Wool Short Pant

100% Tasmanian Merino | 185 gsm |19 microns | Athletic fit | Price: $$$$

Ortovox Mens and Womens Rock N Wool Short Pant

Men’s Rock’N’Wool Pants | Women’s Rock’N’ Wool Pants

Pros: Great breathability | Excellent fit | Quick-drying

Cons: Not the warmest | Relatively Expensive

These Rock’N’Wool short pants also have excellent design features that hinge on functionality. The athletic fit is not too loose or too tight, offering the right amount of support in all the right places. They hug your thighs and calves just ever so slightly but have a relaxed area around the knees for improved mobility.

The Ortovox Rock’N’Wool Short Pant also offers a stellar warmth-to-weight ratio. Still, they aren’t the warmest pair of long underwear that we’ve seen. In our opinion, they are best suited for spring skiing when temperature fluctuations aren’t as high. However, they do offer excellent breathability and relatively quick-drying than some of the other pairs of Merino long underwear on our list.

Outdoor Research Alpine Onset Bottoms

47% Merino /47% Polyester / 6% Elastane | 150 gsm | Tight fit | Price: $$

Outdoor Research Onset Alpine Merino Bottoms

Men’s Alpine Onset Bottoms | Women’s Alpine Onset Bottoms

Pros: Super lightweight | Breathable | Quick-drying

Cons: Not for extreme temps | Reported seam issues

Suppose you are typically toasty in your snow pants and only need a small extra layer of protection. In that case, the Outdoor Research Alpine Onset Merino Bottomss may be your best choice. They are super lightweight and have excellent breathability properties. The fabric is a blend of recycled polyester and Merino wool, making them a perfect eco-friendly skier option.

The main issue (if you can call it that) we have with the Enigma bottoms is that they only have a fabric thickness of 150 GSM. In other words, they are not ideal for ultracold summit conditions. On top of that, some users have reported minor seam irritation and potential fabric snagging issues. Still, if you are looking for an ultralight pair of long underwear that still holds its weight, then check out the Outdoor Research Apline Onset Bottoms.

Patagonia Capilene Midweight Bottoms

100 % Capilene (recycled polyester) | 147 gsm | Relaxed fit | Price: $$

Patagonia Capilene Midweight Bottoms Mens Womens

Men’s Capilene Bottoms | Women’s Capilene Bottoms

Pros: Weighs next to nothing | Relatively Inexpensive | Great Breathability

Cons: Fit a bit too relaxed | Reported durability issues

It’s tough to make a list of skiing gear and not include Patagonia. Their midweight Capilene bottoms are an excellent, budget-friendly choice for skiers of any skill level. Even though they are incredibly lightweight, they still offer adequate insulation against moderate alpine conditions through diamond-like shapes in the fabric that trap in hot air.

One issue we’ve seen with the Capilene midweight bottoms is that they feel too relaxed and saggy. We don’t 100% get the proper support that we would like from a pair of long underwear. It’s not like they perform poorly in the comfort department; it’s more of a personal preference.
