The Proof

Would I divulge our origin story without proof?! Of course not! Here’s a snapshot from that fateful in-store REI purchase six years ago.

Still, that was all just the beginning. Six years later, I’ve taken this Merino wool buff on some once-in-a-lifetime adventures. And I have the pictures to prove it!

As you can see, I rocked this buff on a winter trip to Iceland. It served as my daily scarf/neckwear. And, when we trekked on Vatnajokull glacier, exploring the ice caves and glacial streams, I used it more as a face mask. It was my first wilderness experience using the Buff, and it didn’t disappoint.

A few years later, my wife and I took a trip to Yosemite, hiking to the top of Half-dome (we got lucky in the permit lottery). And you guessed it, the same Merino wool buff wrapped around my wrist the whole time, from struggling up the cables to nearly running into a bear!

You can stuff it in the side of your backpack, tuck it away in your suitcase, or even squeeze it in your pocket. And whenever you need it, it’s ready to go!

The Battle Scars

Alright, one of the downsides of this buff is its durability. At 125 gsm, it’s the same thickness as ~1.5 pieces of paper! That’s super thin! And as you can imagine, I’ve accumulated some wear and tear over six years of adventure.

In all, there are three observable imperfections. The first was after about two years when I cut the tag off improperly. So, really only two that weren’t my fault.

But here’s the thing, these imperfections are barely noticeable. And I’d say they give the buff a bit of character. The memories from my travels and adventures – which I call battle scars – give my buff its authenticity. And after over half a decade, I would expect any piece of heavily-worn Merino wool gear to show its wear.

Despite these battle scars, I still wear the same buff. I’m wearing it now as I’m typing! And I intend to keep wearing it, holes in all, until every last thread comes undone.

Nothing Else

What do you want me to say?! I absolutely love this thing. I mean, it’s just a tube of Merino wool fabric. Buff can’t really improve anything on it. It’s not like they are going to add extra features anytime soon.

Although, I do view this sleeveless tank as a base layer instead of a standalone layer. It works best under a heavier baselayer to increase your core temperature in more frigid conditions. It’s not the most stylish Merino wool tank we’ve talked about, but it’s not like it’s overly boxy. I could see myself throwing it on at the beach for extra sun protection (Minus33 notes it has a 20 UPF rating). Still, I prefer it as a cold-weather layering option more than any other potential use.

And one of the reasons for this is the technical features Minus33 incorporates into the tank design. The shoulder seams are offset to avoid chafing from backpack straps. Moreover, the tagless interior and flatlock seams prevent potential itching and annoyance, especially if your hiking pack is heavy. Since I got the bralettes, I thought, why not complete the set with a pair of boy shorts? So, that’s precisely what I did!

And now, after one year of wearing the Ridge Merino Bralette and Boy Shorts (not continually, obviously), I wanted to share some of my thoughts from when I first got them. Then, we’ll fast-forward twelve months later to see if I feel the same. I’ll review what I liked the best about each and some aspects I believe could be improved in the next release.

Initial Thoughts

I am only 5 feet tall with a slim body type, and I prefer fitted tops to end at my belly button so I can wear them with my high-waisted bottoms. That’s why my choice immediately fell on this bralette, which I got in two colors: olive night and faded rose.

Once I received my bralette, I first noticed how lightweight it was, which I shouldn’t be surprised about because it is one of well known Merino wool’s advantages. Both tops fit me just as expected, not too tight or loose, and felt like a second skin. Much of that is due to the ultralight fabric, which is so soft and breathable.

The bralette has a wide, elastic band at the bottom that sits comfortably on the ribcage without feeling too tight. This allows a snug, supportive fit for the built-in bra. Still, since the fabric is so thin and there are no pockets for padding, I hope my nipple outline doesn’t pop through like I was Jennifer Aniston on Friends. They must have kept it extra cold in that studio, right?

As for the boy shorts, I have never owned that underwear style before, so I was excited to test them out. They are the same material, style, and color (olive night) as the bralette, which is why I purchased them together in the first place!

The construction of the boy shorts is top-notch, with strong stitching and attention to detail. You can tell a lot of thought and expertise went into the design. They offer plenty of coverage in all the right places while maintaining a close-to-skin profile. So I shouldn’t have trouble wearing them with joggers, jeans, or free-flowing dresses. However, I’ll probably opt for a thong with leggings and hip-hugging dresses.

One Year Later

I ordered the bralettes and boy shorts in the summer of 2022. Almost instantly, they became staples in my wardrobe. Despite initially looking for summer tops, I found myself wearing the bralette during each season. I love wearing it under sweaters in the fall and winter. It just feels warm and cozy, especially on windy days. I prefer to layer my tops with an open-front shirt on warm and sunny days. Or if it’s super hot, it works just as well as a standalone piece.

The boy shorts offer great coverage, and I wore them with various outfits. They have a slim profile, so like I mentioned a year ago, I won’t wear them with tight-fitting clothing. Moreover, the leg openings are also well-designed, allowing freedom of movement. The material is light and breathable. Adding spandex provides a stretchy and supportive fit that moves with your body, ensuring no restrictions or discomfort.

For an experiment, I put one of the tops aside and wore only the bralette in olive night color for a couple of months to compare how the material would hold up through wears, washes, and accidents. As you can see, the bralette I wore was slightly more stretched out, but that’s because it molded around my body shape more. And as for the shorts, the material and shape still hold strong even after countless wears and washes. It still sits snug around the leg without being too loose, riding up, or bunching. Both bralettes and the boy shorts wash well and have always held their original color.

All in all, I’m more than satisfied with my purchase. I’m constantly wearing the bralette and boy shorts as pajamas around the house. And if I have to run errands, I throw jeans, and a cardigan, overtop for a comfy, casual look.

What I Liked

So, after wearing it for a year in every possible way I could think about, I’m ready to give you my final verdict on what I liked. I enjoyed many little things like the Merino wool fabric, adjustable straps, and even the built-in shelf bra (sometimes). However, the three main categories that separate these bralettes and boy shorts from the rest of the competition are their versatility, comfort, and affordability. Let’s look further into each.

Versatility

Honestly, I can wear this bralette with nearly any outfit. It’s a to-go laidback outfit with a white boyfriend-style shirt and biker shorts or jeans. I can wear it with athletic shorts for a simple summer look. And I can even wear it under a cardigan in the winter months. I can wear this Merino wool bralette all year round!

As for underwear, I typically prefer thongs for everyday use. It’s not like I’m not too fond of more coverage. I simply don’t the showing outline when wearing briefs or hipsters with slim-fitted bottoms. Giving boy shorts a chance was definitely a win for me. They provide a seamless and smooth silhouette under clothing. Which is exactly what I was looking for.

Together, the bralette and boy shorts come in a variety of colors which makes it easy to pair them with other Ridge Merino tops and bras for a complete set.

Comfort & Fit

It really feels like I’m wearing nothing.

The bralette has a wide, elastic band at the bottom that sits comfortably on the ribcage without feeling too tight. However, it only provides low-to-medium support and is unsuitable for high-impact activities, but it works excellent for light workouts, yoga, and everyday wear.

In addition, I found the fit of the Ridge Merino boy shorts to be excellent. The waistband is wide and elasticized, offering a secure and comfortable fit without digging into the skin or sliding down. Which, with some other Merino wool underwear, I’ve had issues with.

Affordability

If you’re a seasoned Merino wool lover, you know this gear can be expensive. The cost is actually one of the few downsides of Merino wool. Fortunately, Ridge Merino offers a relatively low price tag for the bralette, boy shorts, and their entire collection, for that matter.

What I Didn’t Like

Even with all the aspects I enjoy, these clothes have two minor qualms: one for the bralette and one for the boy shorts. Nothing major, but I found little issues wearing them from the year. They are more like design suggestions than negatives. Still, take a look at each and decide for yourself!

Bralette: No Room For Padding

This bralette’s only disadvantage is that it doesn’t have removable bra pads. Despite two layers in a built-in shelf bra, you can still see the nipples outline, especially with lighter colors like faded rose or coyote.

I hope Ridge Merino will upgrade their design by adding removable pads, and we won’t have to wear nipple covers anymore.

Boyshorts: No Room For “Padding”

When buying the boy shorts, I thought they would be perfect for “those days.” Unfortunately, I found its fabric and construction uncomfortable to stick a pad on. I know it’s small, but Merino wool doesn’t mesh well with the sticky stuff. It is what it is, but I usually won’t wear the boy shorts when it’s my time of the month.

Final Note About The Ridge Merino Bralette & Boy Shorts

Overall, the Ridge Merino Women’s Bralette is an excellent choice for those who value comfort, support, and functionality in their undergarments. I’ve been rocking my Merino Tech shirt for years without any issues. It’s my go-to tee when all I need is a tee. There haven’t been any issues in the laundry besides some initial pilling. It’s the same high-quality material as the other brands at a fraction of the price!

Many Merino wool tees and tank tops we’ve discussed have been free-flowing, relaxed fits. However, Merino wool is one of the best base layer materials, so you should explore a tank with a tighter fit. That way, you can layer overtop without any extra fabric bunching. And of all the tight-fitting Merino wool tanks I’ve tried, the Ibex Essential Racerback is my favorite (Ibex Update: the latest release has a looser fit, so size down for snugness).

I like this tank for summer outdoor activities. It does a fantastic job regulating sweat, as the ultralight (140 gsm) fabric dries quickly. And, if it gets slightly chilly at night, I can throw on a shirt overtop for extra warmth. There’s no fabric bunching due to the snugger fit, either! Still, if it’s you’re first time wearing it, be mindful that some users report an initial itchy feeling. This feeling is normal for Merino wool clothing and typically disappears after the first wash.

I highly recommend the Ibex Essential Racerback tank for anyone who is always on the move. The back design provides plenty of shoulder movement, while the fabric does an excellent job at regulating your core temperature. Wool& makes our tee, tanks, and camisoles list again with their Poppy Tank. Crafted from the same material as their Stella Scoop Neck, you’re getting the highest quality Merino wool fabric. It’s soft, odor-resistant, and cool to the touch. As I’ve been around Merino wool gear for years, I can tell you it’s one of my favorite fabrics.

But there’s one more about this tank top that sets it apart: it’s reversible! The A-frame style allows you to wear it as a v-neck or crew. I like to mix the necklines with various outfits to get the most out of one single tank top. The style is more mature and suitable for all ages- as are most of Wool&’s products – but some users report that the hem needs longer. I don’t think it’s an issue, but I don’t have that long of a torso. I’m only 5’1″!

Finally, I wish this Poppy Tank had more color choices, but the four currently available are nice. Although, some wearers have found some discrepancies between the color of the product image and the final product. Again, I haven’t seen this issue, but if you’re concerned, browse through the ratings section before you buy one!

Icebreaker Women’s Merino Sphere II Tank

Let’s get one thing straight: the Merino Sphere Tank is super ultralight. The fabric weight is 125 gsm, less than two sheets of paper. On the scale, the small is only 4 ounces! Icebreaker uses advanced Cool-Lite jersey fabric that allows your core to breathe so you don’t overheat. Pretty neat, right?

Icebreaker’s design incorporates subtle technical features, making this tank ideal for outdoor adventure. For example, the offset shoulder seams prevent ‘stick rash’ from carrying a heavy hiking backpack. Also, the drop-tail hem adds extra coverage so your pack doesn’t chafe your lower back.

Still, the armholes are rather large, and if you aren’t wearing a sports bra, this tank may be too revealing. It’s not necessarily a negative thing, just something to watch out for if you’re on the fence.

Finally, Icebreaker is always one of our favorite Merino wool brands. They create high-performance clothing with some of the best technical features in the industry. And you may not see it from this basic Merino wool tank top, but there’s a lot of expertise that goes into every stitch. We wouldn’t expect anything less from Icebreaker.

I get it; it’s a bralette, not a camisole. But honestly, I’ve been doing this for years, and I still can’t tell the difference. And I happen to love my Ridge Merino Bralette, so much so that I’ll talk about it any time I can. The durable yet soft Merino wool fabric makes an excellent next-to-skin layer.

The fit is snug, as you would expect from a bralette. But I was surprised that the fabric is rather supportive. The elastic band at the bottom sits comfortably on the ribcage without feeling too tight, and the adjustable straps provide the perfect fit. Although, one design change I would love to see is chest pockets for reusable padding. Still, the bralette works well for low-impact activities or everyday wear (even if I have to wear nipple covers!).

Finally, the best part about this bralette is that it comes at a great price. Ridge Merino always strives to offer high-quality Merino wool gear at a reasonable price, which truly shows. All the clothing I’ve tested from them moves into my daily wardrobe rotation at some point, and this bralette is no different. I even have two: one olive and one rose!

Moreover, the fabric has excellent stretch and recovery, so it should hug your curves nicely. That’s because Icebreaker blends 5% spandex into the material. Yet, since this camisole comes in some lighter shades, just be wary that the fabric may be see-through depending on the lighting. And while some users reported sizing discrepancies, we find it true-to-size.

In the end, you can’t go wrong with this Siren Cami Singlet, or any Icebreaker gear, for that matter. And sure, it may be on the more expensive end of the Merino wool spectrum. But with top-notch design features and high-quality fabric, they are 100% worth it!

As mentioned, you can always count on Smartwool for comfy, high-performing Merino wool gear. And their Women’s Merino Lace Tank is one of the high-performing of them all! The unique lace material offers excellent moisture and temperature management properties.

While you may think the lace fabric is delicate, that’s not the case with this camisole. Smartwool uses a proprietary blend of Merino and Nylon, strengthening the material while maintaining wool’s natural properties. Still, you’ll want to be mindful of potential snags, which could damage the ultralight fabric.

Moreover, the lace material adds to the already elegant design. The contour should support your curves nicely, while the adjustable straps and large scoop neck will help you to achieve the best fit. Although, some users have noted that the cut isn’t flattering on all body types. If you’re concerned, take a look at the sizing charts.

Overall, the Smartwool lace tank works best as an underlayer. I wouldn’t wear it as a standalone piece out in public, mainly because of its transparency (it can be revealing). And to do this, we’ll review it! I’ll provide you with some tech specs and not-so-expert initial thoughts. Then, I’ll wear it for a few months, give it a much-deserved wash, and report my findings. Initial Thoughts

To say I was excited about receiving this shirt may be an understatement. I was checking the shipment tracker for days! When it finally arrived, I ripped open the package and was not disappointed with what I found.

I first noticed how soft and flexible the main jersey fabric felt. After years of doing these reviews, I can easily determine the fabric quality, and this is one of the best. Icebreaker sources its wool from some of the finest New Zealand Merino Sheep so I wouldn’t expect anything less. Yet it’s the wool-cotton canvas shoulder panels that stood out. They are less soft than the pure Merino jersey knit body but shouldn’t irritate my skin. Now will they help take a load off my hiking pack? That’s yet to determine.

Another feature I noticed is the strength-to-weight ratio of the fabric. The ultralight, 150 gsm material is so lightweight that it is the perfect addition to my UL backpacking load. However, despite its thinness, it feels relatively strong. And for all you ‘weight weenies‘ out there, Icebreaker measures a size medium at 8.11 oz. As for the small that I ordered, that clocks in at 7.60 oz. This polo is one of the lightest, most durable hiking shirts on the market.

And regarding technical aspects and top-of-the-line craftsmanship, this polo is also at the top. The forward-set shoulder seams prevent friction from pack straps, while the double-layer back yoke adds comfort, no matter how heavy the pack. I particularly like the snap closure buttons. It not only helps with ventilation, but it’s still relatively fashionable without looking too casual. I may like wearing it off the trail, too!

After my initial findings, I’m excited to put the Icebreaker Merino Hike Shirt through the wringer!

60-Day Wear Test

When we typically do these ‘wear tests,’ we’ll wear the gear for three days in various situations and infer how it would hold up over time. Yet, we decided to extend those three days into sixty for this Icebreaker hiking polo. More precisely, about twice a week for 60 days with no washing, fabric fresheners, or laundry products. Hopefully, by the end of the two months, it doesn’t stink! And by then, I can give you a more accurate analysis – both the good and the bad.

The first day I wore this hiking shirt, I wasn’t even hiking! Instead, I decided to pair it with black chinos and a black hat for a casual look to run errands around town. I was hesitant that the shoulder panels and two-fabric design would translate to something other than my everyday style, but the unique design gave me a more distinguished look. Moreover, the ultralight fabric did well breathing and wicking away moisture. Even in Houston’s summer sun (about 90 °F), I didn’t sweat all day!

After a couple of wears around town and in an office setting, I put this polo to an unusual performance test: baseball! Well, a baseball simulator in Katy, TX, Home Run Dugout. And despite my subpar performance, this polo withstood two hours of frustrating swings like a champion. The flexible, free-flowing material – even the abrasion-resistant shoulders – didn’t restrict my movement, not even a bit. Now imagine if it could increase my batting average, too!

For two months, I tested this polo in the office, around town, on the trail (we’ll get more into that later), and at the batting cages! It’s truly a one-of-a-kind Merino polo, so let’s hope it survives the washing machine!

Laundry Test

After 60 days and 15 total wears with no washing, I am happy to report this polo doesn’t stink. I aired it several times while damp, but the fabric didn’t hold any odor in the long run. That’s the power of wool clothing; it’s odor-free! Still, one of the staples of our gear reviews is our laundry test. That’s because there’s no worse feeling than having your brand-new shirt destroyed by the washer. Moreover, we want to ensure the fabric stays fresh (minimal pilling, shrinkage, and loose stitches) for years.

Icebreaker recommends machining washing on delicate with cold water and like colors. You’ll also want to avoid harsh detergents/bleaches and the dryer. If I’m washing Merino, I like to use Outback Gold Wool Wash instead of traditional detergents. Instead of the dryer (a no-no in Merino wool care), I’ll flat dry this polo on a collapsible drying rack. I use this extra-large, multi-tiered monstrosity for all my gear. But if you don’t own one, it’s best to flat-dry on a towel so the fabric retains its shape.

After washing, I let it dry overnight. It was slightly wrinkled in the morning, but the fabric was intact. There weren’t any loose threads, pilling or unfortunate tears. When I tried it back on, the fit was snugger than it felt pre-wash. However, after wearing it for a few hours, the material molded back to my body shape nicely.

Still, I noticed that the collar was more relaxed than before. I snapped the button placket before washing it, hoping the collar would retain its rigidity. However, it just wasn’t as stiff. Yet despite the slight bacon-like collar (which I ended up cool-ironing out), I can happily say the Icebreaker Hike Top passed the laundry test.

What I Liked

After wearing the Icebreaker Hike Top over a dozen times, I can tell you it’s one of my favorite shirts in my closet. I could go on and on about this polo’s performance and comfort, but you probably understand that by now. Instead, I’ve divided what I liked most about this shirt into three categories: its hiking features, expert craftsmanship, and surprising style.

It’s My New Summer Hiking Shirt

I said before that I tested this shirt on the trail, and I did! After a few hikes with my dog (and the backpack), I came to love the features that this polo provides. While I use more of a vest-style pack than a hiking pack, the shoulder panels came in handy for cushioning and comfort. I had no straps or seams digging into my shoulders since the front seam sits forward to prevent that. On top of that, I never felt restricted in my movement or suffered any chafing from the backpack.

As for temperature regulation, I think the hottest I wore was around 95 °F with 80% humidity. I was wearing a backpack on my way to work, and I did get a little sweaty. However, the fabric is light and airy, so it dried out before leaving an embarrassing sweat stain. I haven’t tested it in cooler conditions, but I’d bet it would perform just as well.

In short, this Icebreaker polo is now my go-to summer hiking shirt. And while my mountain adventures still await me this season, you better believe this shirt will be there for the ride.

Fabric QUality & Craftsmanship

As a Merino wool nerd, it’s genuinely impressive to me how Icebreaker designed this shirt. They combined two fabrics – the durable wool-cotton canvas and free-flowing Merino jersey body – into one of the finest-engineered hiking shirts that money can buy. Everything between these fabrics works well together: their thickness, texture, functionality, etc.

Yet without the reinforcements holding these fabrics together, the whole thing wouldn’t work. As for this hiking polo, every stitch is clean and properly placed. The seams don’t bunch or warp the fabric. Icebreaker clearly considered every detail during the design process. There is an expert level of craftsmanship put into this polo, and I knew it from the moment I opened the package. And, knowing Icebreaker for a few years, I wouldn’t expect anything less from them.

Surprising Versatility & Style

Finally, this polo is unexpectedly fashionable. I initially thought the two-fabric design might not work well with a business-casual aesthetic. But as you can see from the picture, it works relatively well with khakis and dress shoes. Alternatively, you can get away with an everyday look as it pairs well with back chinos and tennis shoes. And if you decide to head to the trails, this polo is perfect for that hiker-casual look.

And it’s true; there are more stylish polos out there. But none come with these many features. And sure, I’d love to see Icebreaker release additional color options (other than gray and teal) to match the rest of my wardrobe better. But since it’s a new release, we suspect there won’t be any new color options until next season.

Areas To Improve

During these reviews, we strive to give you the whole gear picture, not just the tasty morsels you’d see on a product page. In that spirit, despite liking several of the main technical aspects of the Icebreaker Merino Hike Top, I found some areas that could use improvement. Two of these areas worth noting are the collar stiffness and overall price. Let me elaborate on each.

Collar Stiffness

For some reason, I never got 100% comfortable with the collar. At the beginning of my 60-day wear test, it felt like the collar was starched or even had one of those plastic ‘collar savers‘ hidden underneath it. But it was just that stiff! You can see from the picture below that it held its shape while the rest of the fabric sagged. And while this came in handy to keep the sun off my neck on the hiking trail, it took some getting used to in the office.

However, after washing, the collar lost a bit of stiffness. It even picked up a more wrinkled texture. I was worried the needle swung in the opposite direction until I realized I could use a cool iron to smooth the collar. No biggie in the long run, but still an area I feel could improve.

Price Tag

If you already took a sneak peek at this shirt on Icebreaker’s site, you were probably floored by the price tag. I get it; paying $150+ for a polo may seem ridiculous. While a few slightly cheaper options are on the market, you’re typically looking at a steep price for any Merino polo. It’s just one of the downsides of Merino wool gear.

Luckily, with Icebreaker, you get what you pay for. This shirt uses Merino wool technology, design, and performance that I’ve yet to find a comparable opponent for. So, if you were to ask me if it’s worth the price tag? I’d give you an overwhelming YES.

The Polo is more of a collarless athletic tee than a polo. The ultralight, 150 gsm material is high-performing and breathable, allowing you to keep a cool head in the rough. Moreover, the modern style is more form-fitting so that the fabric won’t get in the way of your backswing. And, since it won’t retain orders, you and your golf game will stay fresh, even if you’re marathoning through 36 holes.

As this polo is pure Merino wool, the fabric is somewhat delicate, so you must be careful with it in the laundry. And, if you want to wear it on the green, just be mindful of the sharp branches that could snag and tear the material. Or, fix your slice so you stop hitting it in the woods all the time.

A polo for hiking? It seems unnecessary, right? Well, I thought the same at first until I tested out the Icebreaker Hike SS polo. The stay-put collar does an excellent job keeping the sun off my neck, and the stretchy Merino wool base keeps me cool, even on the steepest climbs. 

Still, one feature puts this polo at the front of the group: the shoulder panels. Icebreaker engineered this shirt to avoid chafing or discomfort from a hiking backpack. The panels are a durable wool-cotton canvas with a forward set shoulder seam, preventing the dreaded ‘strap rub.’ Moreover, the underarm gussets and double-layer back yoke prioritize mobility no matter how heavy your pack may be.

Still, this shirt won’t be your go-to polo for all occasions. Yes, you can wear it to work or a restaurant, but the shoulder panels throw off the ‘formal’ vibe. I often wear it to work since I walk to the office, and the panels cushion my commuter bag nicely. But if your office is more on the business side of business casual, you may opt for another polo on this list.

With ultimate outdoor and travel performance, the 16.5-micron Merino wool fibers feel ultrasoft while the nylon core protects against snags and tears. It’s just one piece perfect for camping, fishing, and all backcountry adventures!

The style is more informal and casual. It mainly functions like a henley with a collar instead of a traditional polo. The functional snap-button placket is suited more for outdoor activities. When you wear it, you’ll look like you’re about to embark on an expedition. And that’s great if you’re going outdoors. However, wearing it to the office may make you look out of place.
