If you’re looking for a new winter jacket, why not make it Merino wool! With exceptional warmth, breathability, and a touch of style, a Merino wool jacket can make a functional & fashionable addition to any winter wardrobe.

Although, not all Merino wool jackets are made the same. Some brands use wool as a traditional fleece fabric, while others stuff the wool in a nylon shell as a lightweight insulator. The moral of the story is finding the perfect Merino wool jacket for you can be challenging.

Luckily, we sift through the crap at Merino Wool Gear, so you don’t have to! With our not-so-expert opinion, we narrowed down the best Merino wool jackets and outerwear for this winter 2023 season. Let’s get started

Merino Wool Jacket Buying Guide

Before I get into my favorite Merino wool jackets and outerwear of the season, it would benefit you to learn more about how I selected the products. Each coat comes from a reputable Merino wool brand made with high-quality material.

Still, to find the best Merino wool jacket for you, we’ve broken down our buying guide into four main categories: warmthfunctionstyle & fit. Learn more about each below!

First and foremost, your Merino wool jacket should protect you against the elements. Merino wool is a fantastic insulator, as it is lightweight, warm, breathable and maintains its temperature-regulating properties even when wet.

Merino’s natural crimp creates a zip-zag, three-dimensional loft that traps in warm air and offers extra insulation. It’s one of the warmest natural materials available!

Although the warmth of each Merino wool jacket is dependent on several factors like construction, fabric weight, design, and more! Take fabric weight, for example. The thicker, heavyweight material is warmer but may not breathe as well. Check out the simple guide from Minus33 below if you want a specific temperature range.

Merino Wool Layering Chart From Minus33

Before dropping hundreds of dollars on a new Merino wool jacket, you should ask yourself: “How am I going to use this jacket?” We don’t want you spending your hard-earned money on something that will sit in your closet all year!

Various Merino Wool Jackets

Thanks to Merino wool’s versatility in manufacturing, Merino wool functions in various ways across some of the products you’ll see today. Some use wool batting as insulation, while others use a dense-weather-proof knit. Either way, all of these jackets are high-performing!

Moreover, most of these jackets are made for specific purposes. Some are made for high-alpine treks, while others are more suited for the challenges of daily life. You’ll get the most value by understanding which type of jacket works best in your life.

Warmth and function are nothing without style! We want you to look good in your new Merino wool jacket. You’ll see various styles and fits – from next-to-skin insulators to traditional fit outer layers.

Wool and Prince Ponte Jacket

If one of these jackets catches your eye, consult the brand’s sizing charts before ordering. Most brands have excellent return policies, but it’s always better to be on the safe side

Merino wool is expensive; there’s really no getting around it. But, if you care for your Merino wool properly, you’ll get every penny out of it.

As for the eleven best Merino wool jackets & outerwear, you’ll see today, the average price tag is $303 (I did the math). Although a couple of the higher-end coats are pushing the average up, the majority are under $250 (I did the math again).

I typically denote the price in a range of $-$$$$$, rather than a number, because you never know when a last-chance sale may happen, or maybe even one of these jackets goes out of production. It’s hard to keep up with all those price changes, so the range works better. If you want an exact price for each jacket, click the button below each description to find out the latest from each brand!

Editor’s Choice: Best Merino Wool Jacket

Woolx Fairbanks Jacket

Woolx Fairbanks Jacket

Pros: Simple, timeless design | Dense, warm knit construction| High-quality, Woolmark-certified Merino

Cons: Fit discrepancies | Dry-clean only

It’s simple; it won’t turn any heads, but it will get the job done. The Woolx Fairbanks Jacket is a classic, heavyweight everyday zip-up made for year-round use. You can wear it as an outer layer down to freezing conditions, and since it has such a low bulk, you can throw a puffer overtop if the temperature gets into the single digits.

Yet the reason I love this jacket – and all Woolx gear, for that matter – is the high-quality material. Using a thick, looped Merino wool yarn, this jacket has a soft, dense knit. It can trap your body heat inside while blocking out the cold. And, as it’s high-quality, Woolmark-certified Merino wool, you won’t find a better lightweight insulator on the market. It’s a five-star fabric, that’s for sure!

Moreover, the Boucle knit creates a nub-like texture, which is unique in its own right. However, due to this knit construction, you won’t be able to wash this Merino wool jacket at home. So, you’ll have to visit the dry cleaners once or twice a year, no big deal!

Overall, the Fairbanks Jacket is one warm, high-performing, and highly versatile piece of Merino wool gear! Woolx calls it your “go everywhere, do anything jacket,” and I agree! With handwarmer pockets, a wind-resistant knit, and the natural temperature-regulating properties of Merino wool, this jacket will keep you toasty this winter and every season in between. Head over to Woolx below to get one for yourself!

Best Merino Wool Hoodie For Winter

Minus33 Kodiak Brushed Wool Hoodie

Minus33 Kodiak Brushed Fleece Hoodie

Pros: Ultra-warm, versatile layering piece | Brushed fleece interior | 3-Pocket design

Cons: Finicky zippers | Potential sizing issues

I love a solid Merino wool hoodie. They are so comfy and warm, especially considering how lightweight they can be. And while there are a bunch of great Merino wool hoodies out there (trust us, it’s one of our most popular articles), the one we ranked #1 almost two years ago is still at the top of the list – the Minus33 Kodiak Hoodie.

The last time we reviewed this hoodie, it was 100% Merino wool, but recently, Minus33 has updated its fiber formula to include a touch of spandex for added stretch and recovery. I like this addition, as it makes it more useful as a mid-layer in subzero conditions or just an outer layer for daily winter wear.

It’s one thing to ‘market’ the Kodiak Fleece as a ‘warm hoodie,’ but Minus33 has done the testing – albeit rather extreme – to prove their claims. This hoodie’s been used during expeditions in the Arctic, Antarctic, and nearly every latitude (and altitude) in between. It’s just that warm!

So, if you don’t need a full-fledged Merino wool jacket, perhaps this Minus33 Kodiak Expedition hoodie is more your speed. The brushed interior is super soft, the hood drapes magnificently, and you’ll be warm. Ah yes, ever-so warm.

Best Merino Wool Vest For Winter

Icebreaker ZoneKnit™ Insulated Vest

Icebreaker ZoneKnit Vest

Pros: Fantastic warmth-to-weight ratio | Reinforced shoulder panels | Technical performance features

Cons: Zipper issues | Uber expensive (especially for a vest)

Perhaps you don’t need a Merino wool jacket, and a vest may better suit your needs? Merino wool is an excellent vest material, as its low-bulk warmth insulates your core while letting your body breathe. I’ve written extensively about the best Merino wool vests, but if you’re looking for serious, functional winter warmth, the Icebreaker ZoneKnit™ Insulated Vest is the best.

This vest is made to withstand the toughest of conditions. Icebreaker’s unique ZoneKnit™ body-mapping technology regulates your body temperature during high-intensity activities. That way, whether skiing, snow-shoeing, or just jogging around the neighborhood, the quilted wool front will keep your core at the optimal performance temperature. You won’t overheat, and you won’t freeze. Now, that’s a piece of Merino wool gear you can count on!

Yet, warmth is nothing without function, and this vest has technical features that winter warriors love. The two-way zip – sometimes tricky to handle – helps improve ventilation and function as a layering piece. Moreover, the double-layer standing collar keeps out any drafts. Even the shoulder panels are reinforced to withstand the wear and tear of backpack straps!

I know you’re probably here for a jacket – and there are many good ones to come – but if all you need is a little extra warmth around the core, Icebreaker has you covered with the ZoneKnit™ vest. With three pockets and engineered performance, it may be too hard to resist! But, if you look at the price tag – which is priced correctly based on its quality – you may find it a little easier to resist.

Warmest Merino Wool Jacket

Duckworth WoolCloud Full Zip Jacket

Duckworth WoolCloud Full Zip Jacket

Pros: Ultimate winter outer layer | Maintains warmth & shape, even when wet | Sustainable design & material

Cons: Isn’t as ‘puffy‘ as you may hope | Limited availability

If you’ve seen our reviews before, you know we love Duckworth gear. Unlike Australian Merino wool, Duckworth sources their wool from Helle Rambouillet sheep – a close cousin of the Merino – from their ranch in Dillon, MT. The Rocky Mountain climate makes the wool more rugged and warm but just as soft. And when you stuff that wool inside a jacket as insulation, well, you have the WoolCloud Full Zip Jacket, the warmest Merino wool jacket on this list!

The secret to the coat’s warmth is the insulation. It’s Duckworth’s homegrown Merino wool batting. The scraps and noils from their own Helle Rambouillet Merino Sheep are used as insulation in a water-resistant nylon shell. And, unlike down or synthetics, wool maintains its temperature-regulating properties even when wet. So, blizzard, sleet, hail, snow, rain, you name it; the WoolCloud jacket rises above it!

While it’s not as puffy as your traditional puffers, this jacket is just as warm. You don’t have to worry about the elements, as the WoolCloud jacket does all the heavy lifting. It’s a popular item and is often out of stock, so if you find your color and size, you might want to snatch it before it’s gone!

Most Stylish Merino Wool Jacket

WeatherWool All-Around Jacket

WeatherWool All-Around Jacket

Pros: Versatile, professional style | High-quality material | Functional ‘everyday’ features

Cons: May be on back order| Really, really expensive

If you live a more professional lifestyle, jumping from meetings to meet-ups, you need a solid coat that can tag along for the ride. And the WeatherWool All-Around jacket is that coat. The full-weight Merino wool jacquard knit will provide dozens of degrees (up to fifty) of warmth.

And that’s not just me, the Merino guy, saying that. WeatherWool has extensively tested this jacket in every winter condition you can think of, even if you fall in a lake. Seriously, this jacket can withstand a winter beating!

Anyway, I ranked it ‘Most Stylish’ not for its weather-resistant properties but for, of course, its style! The jacket has four interior zipper pockets for your phone, wallet, keys, and sunglasses. On the outside, front cargo pockets can store your hat and gloves while you warm your hands in the front pouches instead. Moreover, you can get the perfect fit using the adjustable wrist cuffs and waist cinch cord. And look at it; you can definitely pull off that look! It truly is the all-around jacket!

However, this level of comfort, warmth, and craftsmanship comes at a price. Like, a huge price. It’s the most expensive Merino wool jacket on our list. However, it’s always on backorder, so you know it’s popular. I’d say, knowing WeatherWool, that you’ll get every penny out of it. But hey, you’ll never know until you try it!

Best Merino Wool Jacket For Travel

Ibex Wool Aire Hoodie

Ibex Wool Aire Hoodie Various Colors

Pros: Ultralight warmth | Packable (& stuffable) | Will replace all your worn out puffies

Cons: Zipper quality | Waistline fit

Whether traveling abroad or out on the go, an ultralight puffer is a must-have. And unlike synthetics or down that lose their loft and warmth when they get wet, Merino wool doesn’t! So, no matter the travel conditions, a Merino wool puffer will be there with you. And the best there is – in my not-so-expert opinion – is the Ibex Wool Aire Hoodie.

We’ve had good experiences with Ibex Gear, and this puffer is no different. Its 20-Denier nylon shell is wind and water-resistant, while 80-gram Merino wool insulation keeps you toasty. Moreover, it’s ultralight at only 10-12 ounces (depending on sizing) and packs down to less than a water bottle. That way, you’ll be ready when Mother Nature has other plans.

But this isn’t just some emergency layer; the Ibex Wool Aire Hoodie is a perfect travel companion. The slim fit and scuba hood keep the Merino wool insulation close to your skin, and the loft is low enough for layering overtop. There is even an elasticized waistline and sleeve cuffs for a more stay-put fit. Although, I do wish there were a drawcord around the hem instead of the elastic. Between traveling on planes, trains, boats, and more, a cinch cord always works best at staving off unwanted drafts.

Honestly, I’d be surprised if this Ibex Wool Aire Hoodie doesn’t replace all your worn-out, beat-up puffers. You get ultimate warmth for just a few more ounces, even if it gets wet! Plus, with such a fresh style – six unique patterns in all – there’s bound to be one you can rock whether you’re on the road or not!

Best Everyday Merino Wool Jacket

Wool & Prince Ponte Jacket

Wool & Prince Ponte Knit Jacket Black Marl

Pros: Casual or business casual style | Engineered fabric durability | Large usable pockets

Cons: Warmer options available | Sleeves & hem may be too long for some

It’s casual. It’s professional. It’s everything. And it’s Merino. The Wool & Prince Ponte Jacket is an excellent addition to your everyday wardrobe as a versatile winter layer. Throw it on if the thermostat is busted, wear it under a puffy, or just toss it on for a quick trip to the store. Don’t worry about a bag either, as these pockets are huge and, as Wool & Prince claims: “will fit your ginormous phone.”

And if you’ve worn Wool & Prince clothing before, you’ll understand this jacket has some high-quality, highly-engineered fabric. The double-knit Ponte material – consisting of a blend of Merino wool, nylon, and spandex – creates a solid yet stretchy material. It offers all the warmth properties of Merino wool with an additional level of durability. So it can handle the bumps and bruises of daily life!

However, some users have reported the sleeve and hem length may be too long. So, if you’re on the shorter side like myself, you may be out of luck. Still, it’s best to consult the sizing charts before ruling it out.

Overall, the Wool & Prince Ponte Jacket is an outstanding everyday choice for warmth and style in the winter. Its low-bulk fit makes it a fantastic mid-layer around the office, yet it’s still warm enough to get you across the frigid grocery store parking lot. And, with five standard colors – the popular ‘Black Marl’ is my favorite – there’s definitely one that matches your everyday style!

Best Merino Wool Jacket For Running

Smartwool Smartloft Jacket

Smartwool Men's Smartloft Jacket

Pros: Low-bulk, targeted warmth | Wind-resistant | Great for layering

Cons: Minimal versatility for price| Updated design (untested)

If you’re a four-season runner pushing through the cold winter months, you’ll need gear that helps you go the extra mile. And, as with all Smartwool gear, this Smartwool Jacket will keep you operating at your best, no matter the weather report. The wind-resistant nylon shell keeps the elements out while the targeted wool insulation regulates your core temperature. And all from a reputable brand.

However, this version of the Smartwool Loft jacket remains untested, as it has a brand-new, updated design. While some users have found the design updates less than desired, Smartwool’s newer versions fit me better. It’s a more performance, athletic fit. In the case of this Smartwool jacket, the ‘regular‘ fit is relatively low-bulk, so you can layer something overtop if you want to incorporate it into your daily rotation.

Still, I wouldn’t recommend it as your sole coat for daily wear. Think of it like your taking-out-the-dogs jacket or quiet-December-jog coat. It’s lightweight and warm as long as you’re moving. It has all the pockets you need for a daily coat, but I think there are more versatile options.

Anyway, I can’t say much more since I haven’t gotten my hands on the jacket yet, but knowing Smartwool products, they probably knocked it out of the park again. If you do end up testing it, let us know! We’re always looking for feedback from the flock!

Best Merino Wool Hunting Jacket

Big Bill Merino Wool Hunting Jacket

Pros: Affordable for the level of quality | Big & Tall sizing | Functional features

Cons: Not as soft as you may expect | Dry-clean only

Big Bill has a big Merino Wool Coat for all the hunters. This thing is everything you need to maintain your focus in the backcountry. The 18-oz Merino wool blend is strong and durable, so you won’t scratch or tear the fabric on the brush from fresh game trails. And the best part: it’s warm. Like, really warm.

The style is excellent for both sedentary hunting and when you’re stalking a herd, as the heavyweight, durable Merino wool blend will keep you comfortable, and the relaxed fit allows for extra layering if need be. So, on those cold, still mornings up in the tree stand, you’ll be calm, warm, and collected for when you finally get the opportunity.

Although it’s not the softest wool in the flock, this jacket is smooth compared to its synthetic competitors. And the higher-micron wool is more robust than finer fibers, so you get a much sturdier, more rugged material ready for a late November morning hunt.

On the flip side, since the “finest” fibers aren’t used, this Big Bill Merino wool jacket becomes exceptionally affordable. Trust the Merino guy when I say you don’t often see this level of quality at this price tag. People love this coat for its warmth, style, and functionality. So, if you’re looking for a new Merino wool hunting jacket to help you punch that tag this season, consider Big Bill, and you’ll save big. Catchy, right?

Best Jacket For Cold-Weather Expeditions

Ortovox Merino Fleece Grid Hooded Jacket

Ortovox Merino Wool Fleece Grid Hooded Jacket

Pros: Technical fabric design | High-quality, sustainable material | Low-bulky fit for layering

Cons: Minimal versatility | Thinner than you may expect

I’m not super into mountaineering (although I’ve climbed a few 14ers myself), but I do not know that bad things can happen if you don’t trust your gear above the tree line. Luckily, this is precisely when Merino wool works its magic. It will regulate your microclimate, letting out the sweat from pumping up the switchbacks and protecting you from chilly gusts as you scramble toward the summit. The best Merino wool jacket for all alpine adventures is the Ortovox Merino Fleece Grid Jacket.

And, as this is advertised as an ‘alpine’ jacket, you may expect it to be thick and rugged. However, the Fleece Grid jacket is super lightweight and thinner than expected. It’s best used as part of a low-bulk layering system, and the fit promotes this. Although, this Merino wool jacket does look a little strange away from the mountains. There are two usable front slash pockets, which can be utilized for daily wear, but the style is much ‘outdoors’ than ‘around town.’

Still, if you’re interested, a couple versions of this jacket are floating around. The one mentioned above has a hood, but non-hooded options are also available on Ortovox. And with many unique patterns and color options, the next time you summit, you’ll do so in style wearing Ortovox.

Best ‘Jacket’ For The Holidays

Dale of Norway Hovden Sweater

Pros: High-quality craftsmanship | Timeless Nordic patterns | Designed for winter athletes

Cons: Sizing issues | Expensive for a sweater

Okay, I get it; it’s not really a Merino wool jacket, but more of a Merino wool sweater. But this Dale of Norway Hovden sweater performs just as well as any of the coats on our list. It has enough warmth to be worn as a standalone piece for all those holiday get-togethers. And since you’ll probably be wearing the sweater for the party, you can avoid all those odors from the designated coat room. It always smells weird there.

And how could you go wrong with a traditional Nordic sweater? The Scandinavians have been the leaders in outdoor winter style for centuries, and this Hovden sweater is no different. The classic eight-petal rose pattern (three distinct options) is bound to spice up any bland party. And, since it’s 100% Merino wool, you’ll stay calm and comfortable, even if the arguments start to get heated at the dinner table.

Still, this isn’t just your basic Merino wool sweater. The Hovden is the contemporary version of Dale of Norway’s classic Vail sweater, designed for winter athletes. So basically, you get a high-performance athletic top in the form of a sweater. It’s a win-win!

So, if you’re looking for a simple quarter-zip pullover instead of a jacket, consider the Nordic design of the Hovden sweater. It’s a little pricey for a sweater, but with a unique design, first-class material, and performance meant for athletes, you won’t be disappointed. Dale of Norway has been around since 1897 for a reason; they’re obviously doing something right!

Final Note: Men’s Merino Wool Jackets & Outerwear

Jackets, puffers, hoodies, oh my!

Merino wool’s wide manufacturing range and unique natural properties make it an excellent choice for winter outerwear. Many of these jackets have a low-bulk fit for layering, while others use Merino wool as ultralight, ultra-warm insulation. These outer layers truly showcase Merino wool’s versatility as a fabric.

Although Merino wool is not a cure-all fabric. There is the good, and there is the bad. It’s up to you to decide if it works best for you. And at Merino Wool Gear, we’re here to aid you in your decision.

So, if you want to learn more about Merino wool jackets – or any other fantastic Merino wool clothing – poke around our site or follow us on Instagram. Some guys think they have everything, while others want everything, but neither has everything. Because I’d bet they don’t have a soft, plush, cozy, odor-resistant, natural pair of Merino wool joggers.

Okay, that’s a stretch, but if you’re a guy who loves mixing comfort and style, you really should own a pair of Merino wool joggers. Merino’s natural properties regulate your temperature, keeping you cool when it’s hot and warm when it’s not. It’s the magic of Merino!

But this ‘magic‘ isn’t always very magical. Merino wool gear can be hard to shop for, requires more maintenance, and varies significantly from brand to brand.

And that’s where we come in. At Merino Wool Gear, we filter out the fluff and give you the best. With years of experience, we know a thing or two about Merino.

Today, I’ll review eight of my favorite Merino wool joggers and sweatpants for guys like me who have everything (or at least think they do)! But before I give you my top picks, I’ll provide a brief buying guide so you can make well-informed decisions. And, if you’re just here for the best Merino wool joggers, navigate with the ‘Jump Menu‘ below.

How To Choose The Right Merino Wool Joggers For You

Our goal at Merino Wool Gear is to provide you with the latest, greatest, and up-to-date-est information in the world of Merino wool. But it’s not for us (we already love Merino); it’s for you!

These buying guides aim to avoid the hassle of returns and disappointments since we already sifted through the crap for you. We give you the best options, but it’s your place to decide which works for you. So, with a hand-picked pool of the best Merino wool gear and the insider knowledge below, you can find your ideal clothing.

For these Merino wool joggers, I’ll focus on four main buying criteria: comfortfunctionstyle, and everyone’s favorite: price. Let’s dig deeper into each one!

If Merino wool is anything, it’s comfortable. The superfine wool fibers are less than a third the diameter of human hair, so wearing a pair of Merino wool joggers feels like your legs are wrapped in a cloud.

Although, as you can imagine, comfort means different things to different people. I like a heavier, brushed interior for a plush feel, but others may prefer a breathable, lightweight knit for the gym. Each jogger has its own unique combination of comfort features. Here are some common ones to look for:

Choose whichever comfort features work best for you, and find the pair of Merino wool joggers! Okay, it’s not that simple, but you get the point: determining your desired comfort features will make you feel much more comfortable buying a pair of pants.

As much as I would love you to redo your entire wardrobe with Merino wool, please don’t. You should understand how you will use each gear piece before buying. If it’s not functional for your life, then it’s not worth purchasing.

That being said, many of these Merino wool joggers serve a specific function. Some may be your go-to dog-walking sweats, while others may be your I-barely-ever-jog joggers. Jokes aside, if it’s comfortable and fulfills its purpose, it’s worth exploring further.

Okay, so you found a cozy, functional pair of Merino wool joggers; how do they look on you? I will always say “darn good,” but I’m not the judge here. What’s your jogger style? Do you prefer a tapered athletic look or more of a classic, relaxed fit? What the heck do you really want?

Three styles of Merino wool joggers and sweatpants

Remember that many of these Merino wool brands have fit and style variations within each collection, so poke around each store to ensure you get the style that suits you.

Also, style and fashion change, so if it’s too trendy or gadgety, give it a pass. However, if you are the man who has everything, you’ll want to be on top of the fashion world. And Merino wool is working its way up the ranks. So, you should hop on the train before you get left behind!

Finally, you got your perfect pair of Merino wool joggers: they feel good, work well, and look sexy AFBut holy sh*t, the price tag!

Merino wool can be expensive; it’s one of its few downsidesDo you know how much my Merino wool budget is monthly?! I have no regrets, but my bank account has suffered the consequences.

Fortunately, after years of writing about Merino wool, I realized it’s worth every penny. I’ve had Merino joggers I’ve worn hundreds of times, but they don’t look a day over 30. I got triple my money’s worth with those!

For my eight picks of Merino wool joggers, you’ll typically see values between $60-$200, but each pair is worth the price. You get what you pay for, and despite an expensive price tag, these joggers & sweatpants have insane ‘lifetime value.’

Best All-Around Merino Wool Joggers

Ibex Tranquil Jogger

Ibex Tranquil Joggers Deep Ocean

Pros: Warm, cozy comfort | Top-notch wool-cotton blend | Minimalist design with technical features

Cons: I wish there were more wool | Style not for everyone

With superb comfort, the Ibex Tranquil Joggers take the top spot on our list. The interior is smooth, odor-resistant Merino wool (26% of the material composition), while the outer face is cotton. You get one luxuriously soft pair of joggers when these two fabrics are blended. Even Ibex, a long-standing Merino wool brand, claims this fabric “could be the best blend of natural fibers yet.” They will genuinely make your legs feel tranquil (hence the name).

Still, comfort is nothing without style. The fit is loose and relaxed, the fabric flowing freely as you move. The gusseted construction improves overall mobility, too. And, with a thick elastic waistband, drawstring, and ankle cuffs, you get all-day support and an elegant drape you don’t always see with sweatpants.

Moreover, as Ibex designed these joggers as the ultimate travel companion, they come packed with functional features. The half-welt hand pockets are sewn in with fabric that folds over the top of the pocket opening. This creates a finished look and helps to keep the pocket from sagging. A coil-zippered back pocket offers minimal bulk, keeping you comfy even on long international flights. And, with a versatile 230 gsm (midweight) fabric, these Merino wool joggers will keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Now, that’s travel gear at its finest.

Overall, these joggers provide you with comfort, mobility, style, and so much more. You can wear them to the gym, to the store, on the plane, or on the couch. We could all use tranquility in our lives, so why not start with the Ibex Tranquil Joggers? Head over to Ibex below to learn more!

Best Merino Wool Joggers For Lounging

Icebreaker Shifter II Straight Pants

Icebreaker Shifter II Straight Pants

Pros: The best ‘my-day-is-over’ pants | Unique fabric blend | Merino-lined seams & pockets

Cons: ‘Dad style’ not for everyone | Limited color options

After a long day of work, there’s no better feeling than getting home and throwing on your favorite pair of sweats. And the Icebreaker Shifter II Straight Pants will be your new favorite pair of lounge pants. The relaxed fit makes them perfect for lounging around the house. You can binge, snack, slack, swipe, and procrastinate comfortably. When you put on these Merino wool joggers, you’ll never want to take them off.

What sets these Shifter pants – and all Icebreaker gear – apart is the expert level of craftsmanship. With high-quality, sustainable materials like TENCEL™ and Merino, the Eucraform terry fabric feels plush and smooth as it cradles your lower half. And, while Icebreaker doesn’t explicitly state the fabric weight, these sweats feel much heavier (28.34 oz.) than other pairs. So, you get a cozy, warm pair of “before and after bottoms.”

I particularly enjoy the non-tapered construction, or ‘Dad Sweats.’ It’s got a flowing, unique style that’s very much in line with much of the streetwear fashion today. Although, I completely understand if you’re not ready for ‘Dad Fashion‘ quite yet. Still, who cares if you look like a dweeb when your legs are draped in a cushy, warm material.

So, when your day is over – work has been worked, gym has been gymed, and life has been lifed – the Icebreaker Shifter II Pants will be waiting for you. The coziness will wipe away the stress from the outside. Just slip them on and lounge away into the abyss. You deserve it.

Best Merino Wool Joggers For Running

Smartwool Active Fleece Tech Pant

Smartwool Active Fleece Tech Pant Blue

Pros: Excellent stretch & recovery | Technical features for runners | Cozy brushed interior

Cons: Expensive | Untested (new product)

I’ve got to be honest with you: I still need to get my hands on these Smartwool Active Fleece Tech Pants. But I sure am excited too soon. Just look at how unique these Merino wool joggers are compared to some on this list. They just look perfect for four-season running. And if my previous Smartwool reviews have taught me anything, they perform how they look.

But still, these pants are new and remain untested. Plus, at such a hefty price tag, you may not want to risk it; I completely understand. But I’m here to tell you: these Merino wool joggers are worth the risk. Just look at some of these features:

  • Brushed Merino interior for a soft feel
  • Adjustable waist and legs for fine-tuned fit
  • Synthetic additions for strength & stretch
  • Warm, breathable material
  • Zippered hand pockets
  • Reflective elements

I’ve been doing this for a few years and have not seen better Merino wool joggers for running. Best Merino Wool Joggers For Daily Use

Ridge Merino Hyde Jogger

Ridge Merino Hyde Joggers Black

Pros: All-day comfort | Effortless style & construction | Warm yet breathable

Cons: Pocket zipper strings may fall off | Limited color availability

With a simple, minimalist design and Uber-comfy material, these Hyde joggers from Ridge Merino are the best for everyday wear. Why, you may ask? Well, because I wear my pair of Hyde Joggers every day. That’s right, these are my go-to around-town, at-home, and everywhere-in-between pants.

I mainly wear them because they’re stylish enough for any outfit. I can pair them with a Merino wool tank for the gym or a hoodie for a brisk autumn day. Moreover, the tapered leg design is trendy and goes with all my wardrobe, which is truthful about all of Ridge Merino’s gear.

But not only do these Hyde joggers look good, but they feel good. The 100% Merino wool Terry knit material is soft and plush, cradling and draping in all the right places. And with extra comfort features like flatlock seams and hand warmer pockets, your legs will feel peaceful no matter how chaotic your day is.

So, if you’re just looking for a pair of Merino wool joggers – a solid, versatile, and comfy pair of sweats – look no further than these Ridge Merino Hyde Joggers. Take it from the guy wearing a pair as he writes this: these 100% Merino Wool joggers are 100% worth it.

Best Merino Wool Joggers For Travel

Unbound Merino MerinoTencel Sweatpants

Unbound Merino Men's MerinoTencel Sweatpants Charcoal

Pros: Cloud-like comfort | Versatile style | Highly sustainable fabric

Cons: Limited availability (super popular) | Shallow pockets

Merino wool joggers are excellent travel companions. They keep you comfortable during uncomfortable flights, and since Merino wool is odor-proof, you won’t have to wash them on the road. That way, you can carry less and explore more! Our favorite pair of travel joggers comes from one of our favorite travel brands: Unbound Merino.

Initially known for their minimalist travel tee, Unbound Merino has expanded their collection to all the gear travelers love, including these sweats. They have a slim, tapered construction, making them versatile enough to work with nearly any outfit in your carry-on. Moreover, there are zippered back pockets and a hidden zipper pocket in the front to secure your belongings. Although, I wish all the pockets were a bit deeper.

As with all of Unbound Merino’s creations, these travel joggers use high-quality, sustainable materials. The blend of Tencel and Merino, which have eco-friendly properties, provides a soft, luxurious feel. Moreover, the 2% spandex creates a little extra stretch, that is, if you have enough leg room. You’ll be in a cloud of comfort as you zip through the clouds.

These Unbound Merino sweats are a must-have for serious travelers, especially the ‘one bag‘ crowd. And since they’re already so popular, it’s best to grab your size before they sell out!

Most Stylish Merino Wool Joggers

Wool & Prince Interlock Knit Jogger

Wool and Prince Interlock Knit Jogger Black

Pros: Flattering design | Engineered durability | French terry option available

Cons: Pockets may sag over time | Minimal color options

If you want to up your style game but still want that ‘lazy Sunday morning’ comfort, Wool & Prince has you covered with their Interlock Knit joggers. The style and design are the most ‘formal-looking’ of all the Merino wool joggers I’ve seen, making them perfect for activewear, streetwear, travel, and more!

And this level of expertise and craftsmanship isn’t exclusive to these joggers. Wool & Prince creates the market’s most stylish, professional Merino wool workwear. They look nicer than half my work pants, especially the French Terry option.

Although, style is nothing without comfort. Luckily, the wool-nylon blend manages moisture and regulates temperature despite a slightly heavier fabric weight (300 gsm). Moreover, the fibers are durable, as the nylon filament is coiled around the Merino, giving you the best of both worlds.

Overall, these are the nicest-looking sweats you’ll own – Merino wool or not. Unfortunately, there are minimal color options as of now. But watch out as Wool & Prince often releases new color options each season.

Most Versatile Merino Wool Joggers

Woolly Longhaul Jogger

Woolly Longhaul Joggers Blue

Pros: Go anywhere, do anything type of pant| Flexible material | Comparatively affordable

Cons: Long-term durability concerns | Sizing inconsistencies

When you just need a versatile, functional pair of pants, the Woolly Longhaul Joggers are an excellent choice. Made from a blend of Merino wool, cotton, and elastic, these joggers are incredibly comfortable. The stretch and recovery of the material make these pants a solid addition to any activewear wardrobe. Moreover, the modern, low-bulk fit makes them an excellent layering option on the slopes.

Although, some users have noted that these joggers aren’t the most durable. While this is the first time I have seen this issue with these pants or other Woolly gear, this low wear-life is likely due to improper care. So, if you follow the correct laundry routine, you won’t have any issues.

So, whether you’re lounging around the house, finishing the last set at the gym, running errands around town, or just about any other activity, the Woolly Longhaul Joggers will be there for the longhaul. And at such an affordable price – often discounted even further – they may be the most valuable pair of Merino wool joggers on this list!

Warmest Merino Wool Joggers

Duckworth Powder Pant

Duckworth Powder Pant Olive Green

Pros: Absolute coziness | Boot cut length for waders & ski boots | 100% sourced in USA

Cons: Expensive | Not the most stylish joggers

If you’re venturing into the winter wilderness, you may need more than a thin Merino wool base layer. In subzero conditions, you need a thicker, breathable mid-layer under your snow pants, and the Duckworth Powder Pants are the perfect fit. There won’t be any bunching near your ankles, as the shorter boot-cut length is ideal for ski boots and waders.

The secret to the Powder Pants’ warmth is in the wool itself. Unlike other Australian Merino brands, Duckworth sources their wool from their ranch in Dillon, MT. These sheep roam the Rocky Mountains, a much harsher climate than their cousins ‘Down Under.’ So, their wool is much more rugged and warm, and that’s precisely what you get with these pants.

Still, you don’t have to wait for a blizzard to wear these sweats. The shorter length makes them great for lounging by the fire with a cozy, warm pair of Merino wool socks. You should cover yourself in a Merino wool blanket, too! That is absolute coziness.

What else do you want me to say? These Powder Pants are warm and cozy. The warmest and the coziest. And if you value comfort, you’re going to want a pair!

Winter is a time to enjoy the snow and outdoors, but your time may be cut short without the proper gear. When the temperatures drop, no two pieces of equipment are more valuable than Merino wool gaiters and balaclavas. With dozens of ways to wear, they are must-have cold-weather accessories.

And when the temperature begins to freeze, Merino wool truly shines. Its natural properties make Merino one of the most sought-after materials for skiers, snowboarders, ice climbers, snowmobilers, or anyone who wants to enjoy the beauty of winter in comfort and warmth.

Although finding the right gaiter or balaclava that fits your specific needs can be challenging. That’s where we come in. At Merino Wool Gear, we are dedicated to helping you find your perfect Merino wool clothing.

Today, we’ll help you find your best Merino wool balaclava and gaiter. Let’s get started!

How To Choose The Best Merino Wool Balaclava For You

Before we get into the best balaclavas & gaiters, let’s look at some of the factors you should consider if you’re interested in getting one. We’ll look closer at functionality, fabric weight, style, and price.

That way, you can find your perfect piece of Merino wool gear!

First, consider how you will use a balaclava or gaiter. You’ll want something warm and windproof if you need it for the ski slopes. However, if you need a gaiter for hiking, biking, or running, you’ll need something breathable, moisture-wicking, and more lightweight.

I usually opt for a neck gaiter since it’s lightweight, easy to pack, and you can wear it a dozen different ways. And to me, this versatility goes hand-in-hand with functionality. Check out some of the ways you can wear Merino wool gaiter below.

12 Different Ways To Wear A Buff

To sum up, only buy a balaclava or gaiter with an understanding of how you will use it. I don’t want you to waste money on something you’ll never use!

Merino wool balaclavas come in various thicknesses, so understanding the different fabric weights (grams per square meter or gsm) is essential to finding the right gear for you. Heavyweight balaclavas (300+ gsm) will keep you much warmer than lightweight balaclavas (<160 gsm) but won’t breathe as well. To better understand which fabric weights work at which temperatures, check out the graphic from Minus33 below.

Merino Wool Layering Chart From Minus33

I prefer a lighter or midweight option for a balaclava since it usually works with an already-warm beanie. However, if you’re using your balaclava in Arctic conditions, the higher the gsm, the better.

Varioius Merino Wool Balaclava Styles

We’ll cover three main styles of balaclava today: neck gaiters, full-face balaclavas (standard ‘face hole’), and hinged balaclavas. Each has unique features and properties, so choosing which style works best for you is up to you.

Merino wool gear, in general, is expensive. It’s one of the few downsides of Merino! If you are looking for a Merino wool gaiter or balaclava, you should understand the various price points because a higher price doesn’t necessarily mean higher quality.

That’s why we do what we do! You don’t have to sift through all the junk; we did that for you. The Merino wool gaiters and balaclavas you’ll see today, no matter the price, are worth every penny.

Editor’s Choice: Best Merino Wool Gaiter

Lightweight Merino Wool Buff

Pros: Most versatile accessory (ever?) | Featherlight fabric weight | Over a dozen ways to wear

Cons: Prone to snags & tears | Fabric may weaken over time with improper care

I’m a Buff buff through and through. It’s what got me started on my Merino wool journey! Nearly six years ago, I stumbled upon an REI sale, and more than half a decade later, Merino Wool Gear is where people like you come to find the best that Merino wool offers.

Anyway, this isn’t about me; it’s about this Buff! Seriously, I can’t stress enough how much I love mine. At 125 gsm, it’s featherlight but still packs a punch in the warmth department; I get full 4-season use out of mine. And, since it’s 100% Merino wool, it feels super soft. Like “my neck is wrapped in a cloud” soft.

But you don’t just have to wear it around your neck. You can twist it into a beanie, fashion a full-face balaclava, or, my favorite, the airplane sleep mask. It’s the most versatile piece of Merino wool gear that I own.

However, you must properly care for it to get the most use out of it. After six years, my Merino wool buff has about as many battle scars. A stitch here, a minor tear there, that sort of thing. It doesn’t stop me from wearing it daily, but it’s worth noting.

Finally, I can’t say enough good things about this lightweight Merino wool Buff. It’s what started it all! Why would we not give it the top spot on our list?

Best Merino Wool Balaclava

Icebreaker Apex Balaclava

Icebreaker Apex Balaclava

Pros: Warmth-to-weight ratio | Fantastic durability | Ventilation flap

Cons: Expensive | May not fit all head shapes

If you need more coverage than a gaiter can provide, a Merino wool balaclava is your next best choice. And my favorite one is the Icebreaker Apex Balaclava. With a relaxed, comfortable fit, this accessory is perfect for layering under hats or helmets.

Although, by itself, it’s not the warmest. At 200 gsm, the midweight fabric adds warmth to an already-existing setup. It’s just that extra layer of protection that you need to get a few more runs before the last call on the chairlift.

Unlike some of the 100% Merino wool balaclavas, Icebreaker uses a wool-synthetic blend for extra strength and stretch. And in combination with the ventilation flap, the material manages your moisture levels.

The Icebreaker Apex Balaclava is a must-have for winter sports enthusiasts and cold-weather runners. Yes, it’s expensive. But, as with all Icebreaker gear – it’s worth every penny. Head to Icebreaker below and see if the Apex balaclava suits you.

Best Merino Wool Balaclava For Skiing

Meriwool Full Ski Mask Balaclava

Pros: Extended neck length | Ventilation flap | Relatively affordable

Cons: Minimal versatility | Initial itchiness may occur

When you’re out on the mountain, active warmth is a must. Your gear should regulate your temperature and manage your moisture levels. One unique piece of equipment that does that is the Meriwool full ski mask balaclava.

What makes this piece unique is the extra long length. Meriwool designed the material to drape over your shoulders and tuck underneath your ski jacket. That way, you seal off any drafts or cold spots before they even form! And the hinged design allows you to adjust the ‘face hole‘ under your ski helmet and goggles. It may seem minor but it creates a more comfortable fit in the long run.

Finally, this Meriwool balaclava is super affordable for what you’re getting. It’s half a Merino wool hoodie for less than a quarter of the price. So, if you need extra protection next time you hit the slopes, grab this Meriwool 100% Merino wool balaclava.

Best Merino Wool Neck Gaiter For Running

Smartwool Unisex Merino 250 Gaiter

Smartwool Unisex 250 Gaiter

Pros: Double-layered construction | Supersoft | Surprisingly breathable

Cons: May be too short for some | Sizing discrepancies

A classic piece from a trusted Merino wool brand, the Smartwool Merino 250 gaiter is a must-have for four-season runners. The midweight fabric is warm yet breathable. Plus, you can wear it in whichever way you can imagine. It’s just another one of those versatile pieces of Merino wool gear.

What sets this gaiter apart from the others is the shorter length. Smartwool uses a reduced size, which creates a lighter gaiter overall (only 0.71 oz). However, this means there is less coverage than longer gaiters. Luckily, if you’re looking for something longer, Smartwool offers other gaiter styles.

In addition to the shorter length, some users report that the fit is too snug around the neck. I haven’t experienced this issue, but that’s because mine has stretched over time.

Still, if you’re a runner looking for extra protection on those brisk winter jogs, the Smartwool 250 gaiter should be your top choice. And if you’re looking for more badass Merino wool running gear, Smartwool has an entire collection! Check out their industry-leading Merino wool performance apparel below!

Best Balaclava For Extreme Cold

Minus33 Expedition Merino Wool Balaclava

Minus33 Expedition Weight Merino Wool Balaclava Olive

Pros: Perfect for subzero conditions | Warm, high-quality material | Ideal for winter sports

Cons: Expensive for a balaclava | Style may not work for everyone

Snow, sleet, and wind, this balaclava will keep your head toasty no matter the conditions. Minus33 uses their popular expedition weight material (400 gsm), making it one of the warmest balaclavas on our list. Still, if you think the heavyweight option will be too hot, opt for the more breathable midweight option.

Outside of the insane temperature regulation properties, this Merino wool balaclava is super comfy. The material is an ultrasoft, 17.5-micron Merino wool fiber construction. There are even flatlock seams to prevent rubbing and chafing. In other words, your head will be toasty and cozy, no matter the conditions.

The Minus33 expedition balaclava is just one warm, comfy balaclava perfect for snowmobiling, skiing, snowboarding, or anything that requires you to be in subzero conditions for an extended period. Head to Minus33 below to learn more and see if it works for you!

Best Merino Wool Gaiter For Commuters

Wool & Prince Neck Gaiter

Wool and Prince Neck Gaiter Light Gray

Pros: Clean, professional style | Durable fabric | Versatile design

Cons: Shorter length | Limited color options

If you’re battling the elements daily, you’ve got to have the gear to protect you. Although, you don’t want to look like you’re going on a hike every morning. This Wool & Prince gaiter has a slightly more professional look, making it the best option for commuters.

One of the reasons this gaiter looks so clean and professional is the high-quality material. Wool & Prince uses a nearly 50-50 wool-synthetic blend for added strength for daily use. There’s even a touch of spandex for increased stretch and recovery.

Although, when you see Merino wool of this quality, it typically comes at a price. That’s the case with this Wool & Prince neck gaiter. It’s nearly double the price of some of the other Merino wool neck gaiters on our list. However, the high price tag is worth the quality and style, primarily if you use it daily.

Finally, this gaiter is just as versatile as any other. You can wear it as a scarf, beanie, headband, sleep mask, hood, etc. Just keep it in your work bag and bust it out whenever needed!

Best Merino Wool Balaclava For Hunting

Kuiu Ultra Merino 145 Balaclava

Kuiu Ultra Merino 145 Balaclava

Pros: Comfortable clamshell construction | Ventilation design | Camouflage patterns

Cons: Super expensive | Not the warmest balaclava on the list

If you’re planning on punching a tag this year, you’ll need gear that gives you an advantage. For example, this Kuiu Ultra Merino 145 balaclava – which comes in three unique camouflage patterns – will keep you warm and dry up in the tree stand for an hour or two. And, as all hunters know, waiting just a little longer can make all the difference.

Kuiu uses a specialized material called Nuyarn Merino. It’s 90% Merino wool & 10% nylon, adding strength and durability without hindering wool’s beneficial breathability, odor-resistance, and temperature regulation properties.

Although, at 145 gsm, this fabric is ultralight. That’s not to say it’s not warm, as wearing it will add about 15-20 degrees of warmth to any setup. However, I’d opt for a heavier fabric weight if you are hunting in subzero conditions.

So, before you head out hunting this season, check out this balaclava and the other incredible Merino wool hunting apparel that Kuiu offers. It may just be the edge you need in the backcountry!

Best Budget Merino Wool Gaiter

Acushla 100% Merino Wool Gaiter

Pros: Price-to-quality ratio | Extra long for added warmth & versatility | Multiple colors available

Cons: Initial itchiness may occur | May sag over time

Another Merino wool gaiter: how much more different could this one be? Other than the fact it’s extra long, not much! It’s the same Merino wool gaiter as some other brands but at a lower price!

The 100% Merino wool material may not feel as soft as other brands, but this Acushla gaiter is still comfortable. I like the extra-long length, as it creates a unique layered construction. However, the extended design may cause the fabric to sag or look lackluster over time.

Overall, this gaiter does what all the other Merino wool gaiters do, but at a cheaper price. Yes, there are better products out there. But at this price-to-quality ratio, and with eight color options to choose from, how could you resist such a great deal?

Final Note About Merino Wool Gaiters & Balaclavas

From extended face masks to versatile buffs, we’ve covered the best of the best in the world of Merino wool balaclavas. If you’re still on the fence, remember the four buying criteria we discussed: functionality, fabric thickness, style, & price.

Merino wool is a natural fiber that is soft, moisture-wicking, and breathable. But did you know it’s also crazy warm? Like one of the warmest natural fibers on the planet!

In fact, Merino wool is so warm that it’s often used in high-performance outdoor clothing for mountaineering, skiing, and other cold-weather activities. But it’s not just for extreme sports enthusiasts. Merino wool can also be an excellent choice for everyday wear, especially in cold climates.

And today, you’ll find out why Merino wool is one of the warmest fabrics. So, without further ado, let’s dig deep to answer the question: Is Merino wool warm?

How Does Merino Wool Keep You Warm?

You have to understand that Merino sheep live outside all year round. So, their fleeces protect them from harsh conditions when wintertime rolls around. And in the spring, when their wool is shorn and eventually processed into clothing, you get all the same benefits.

Let’s look closer into why Merino wool is so warm.

In the case of Merino wool, the heat of sorption is positive, meaning that heat is released when the wool absorbs moisture. This is due to the chemical structure of wool, which contains amino acids that form hydrogen bonds with water molecules. When the wool absorbs moisture, these hydrogen bonds break, releasing heat.

So, in the winter, Merino wool will keep you warm even if you’re sweating. It’s one of its many natural properties, which we absolutely love.

Merino wool fibers are super fine, with an average diameter of about 17 micrometers or microns. This means they have a high surface area to volume ratio, which allows them to trap more air. Air is a good insulator, so this helps to keep you warm.

Ridge Merino Thicknesses

And it’s easier to gauge how fine these fibers are if you have something to compare them to. As you can see from the above comparison, Merino wool is much thinner than regular wool, and it’s almost four times finer than human hair.

Now that’s a fine, fine fiber.

If you took a magnifying glass to Merino wool fibers, you’d see a wavy, curly shape that is not smooth. This natural spring-like crimp helps trap warm air pockets in the material, insulating you from the outside conditions.

In other words, Merino wool’s structure makes you warm!

Due to this crimp, wool fibers are naturally elastic; they can stretch and contract without breaking. This is important because it helps to keep the fibers from bunching up, which would trap less air and make you less warm.

Compared to solid fibers like synthetics, Merino wool fibers are hollow, which can trap even more air. In fact, Merino wool can trap up to 80% of its weight in air. And this allows for a fantastic warmth-to-weight ratio.

Ridge Merino Structure

Combining fine fibers, natural crimp, hollow core, and elastic fibers gives Merino wool superior warmth retention properties. The fine fibers trap air, the crimp creates tiny air pockets, the hollow body further increases the amount of air that can be trapped, and the elastic fibers help to keep the air evenly distributed. This air acts as an insulator, preventing heat from escaping from your body.

So, is Merino wool warm? The answer is simple: you’re damn right it is!

How Does Merino Wool Keep You Cool?

I told you you didn’t know the half of it!

In addition to keeping you warm in the chilly months, Merino wool does an excellent job keeping you cool in the summer. Again, the sheep have to stay cool in the sun somehow!

And this isn’t just hearsay because I’m a Merino wool lover – it’s the truth! Merino wool has many natural properties – like breathability, moisture management, and odor resistance – making it one of the best summer fabrics.

Let’s examine why Merino wool is excellent at regulating your body temperature.

Due to their hollow structure, Merino wool fibers absorb and transport moisture away from your skin. Not only does it help draw sweat beads away from your skin, but it also moves water vapor away from your skin as sweat evaporates. Therefore, your next-to-skin microclimate always stays dry.

So, if you’re rocking your Merino clothing in hot weather, you shouldn’t feel hot or clammy!

Merino Wool Moisture Control Explanation

Breathability is often just a buzzword in the athletic wear world, but with Merino wool, it’s actually a thing. You get tons of airflow through the material, preventing your body temperature – especially around your core – from overheating.

Here is a more scientific explanation of how Merino wool is breathable:

  • The hollow fibers of Merino wool are about the same size as a water vapor molecule. This allows water vapor to move quickly through the fabric, wicking away moisture from the skin.
  • Merino Wool’s Crimp is the natural wave-like pattern of the fibers. This crimp creates tiny air pockets between the fibers, which further helps to trap air and wick away moisture.
  • The scales on Merino wool fibers are microscopic projections overlapping like fish scales. These scales help to keep the threads from felting together, which would block the airflow.

Merino wool is naturally odor-resistant, meaning you can wear it for days without it getting smelly. This is great for hot weather when you might not be able to wash your clothes as often and contributes to Merino wool’s industry-leading sustainability. Less washing, less water, less microplastics, and better for the environment!

In addition to these properties, Merino wool has a unique ability to absorb and release heat slowly (part of what we discussed with Heat of Sorption).

So, if you’re looking for a fabric that can keep you warm in cold weather and cool in hot weather, merino wool is a great choice. It’s no wonder why Merino wool is so desired by outdoor enthusiasts and everyday wearers alike.

Is Merino Wool Warm? Scientific Evidence

It may sound more subjective coming from a guy who eats, sleeps, and breathes Merino wool gear, but there is hard scientific evidence from people much smarter than me that gives the overwhelming answer of “Yes. Merino wool is warm!

In one study, researchers found that Merino wool could keep people warm in temperatures as low as -20 °C. In another study, researchers found that Merino wool could wick away moisture twice as fast as cotton.

And, while I could sit here and science nerd out all day, I decided to give you the Cliff notes of some other fascinating studies pondering the warmth of Merino wool.

Merino Wool Vs. Other Natural Fibers

I’ll always choose Merino wool over other natural fibers, such as cotton, silk, and linen. However,. All these fibers have unique properties, and the best fiber for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences.

Merino wool and four other natural fibers

Merino wool is warm, comfortable, wicks away moisture, and is naturally odor-resistant. It is also soft and gentle on the skin, durable, long-lasting, and sustainable. However, it can be itchy for some people and not as wrinkle-resistant as other fibers.

Cotton is affordable, soft, comfortable, breathable, and absorbent. However, it is not as warm as Merino wool, can get clammy when wet, and is not as odor-resistant.

Silk is soft, luxurious, relaxed, comfortable, moisture-wicking, and naturally wrinkle-resistant. However, it is expensive, less durable than merino wool, and can be damaged by heat and sunlight.

Linen is cool and comfortable, breathable, and absorbent. However, it is heavier than Merino wool, can wrinkle easily, and is less soft than other fibers.

Cashmere, alpaca, and other animal-based fibers often compete with Merino wool clothing. Cashmere is a little more luxurious but not as durable, and alpaca fibers are super warm but – at least from my experience – not as soft.

Ultimately, the best fiber for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. Merino wool is an excellent option if you are looking for a warm, comfortable, and versatile fabric that can be worn in various climates. For something ultra-luxurious, why not cashmere or alpaca. However, if you are on a budget or looking for a more wrinkle-resistant fiber, cotton or linen may be a better choice.

Final Note: Is Merino Wool Warm?

Merino wool is a remarkable fabric with many benefits, making it an excellent choice for cold-weather clothing. It is warm, comfortable, wicks away moisture, and is naturally odor-resistant. It is also soft and gentle on the skin, durable, long-lasting, and sustainable.

So next time you are looking for a new winter jacket or sweater, consider Merino wool. You won’t be disappointed!

Here are some additional things to keep in mind when choosing Merino wool clothing:

Quality: As a natural fiber, fabric quality will vary depending on the brand and the price. Buying Merino wool clothing from a reputable brand that uses high-quality wool is essential.

Thickness: Merino wool comes in different thicknesses, so choosing the right consistency for your climate is necessary. You will want thicker merino wool clothing (200+ gsm) for cold weather. You can choose a lighter weight (<150 gsm) for warmer weather.

Care instructions: Merino wool is easy to care for. It can be machine-washed and dried on a low setting. However, following the care instructions on the garment tag is vital to avoid shrinking or fading.

I hope this helps you to choose the perfect Merino wool clothing for your needs! And if you want to learn more about our favorite fabric, follow us on the socials below, or sign up for our newsletter.

We’re always looking for new Merino lovers to join our flock!

As I walked through the aisles of REI preparing for some Christmas shopping back in 2017, I came across a display of buffs. Merino wool buffs, to be exact.

I heard some of the buzz about Merino wool on backpacking forums – and what Survivor fan hasn’t heard of Buff – but it was the first time I knowingly encountered it at the store. So, I decided to splurge and got a lightweight dark gray Merino wool buff as an early Christmas present to myself!

And that’s how it all started. Six years later, we are the leading Merino wool clothing reviewers worldwide!

None of that would have happened without that Merino wool buff!

More than half a decade later, my weathered Buff is still kicking. It has bounced around Europe, climbed to the top of mountains, and trekked across glaciers. And, as you can imagine, it has the battle scars to prove it.

But even today, it’s become a vital clothing accessory, whether I wear it as a headband, beanie, gaiter, or sleep mask. I keep it in my bag at all times!

So, reviewing the Merino wool buff – my Merino wool buff – almost a decade in the making would only be proper. I’ll go over the good and the bad, then we’ll answer whether or not you should add a Merino wool Buff to your wardrobe.

Who knows? It might even change your life; It sure as hell changed mine.

The Proof

Would I divulge our origin story without proof?! Of course not! Here’s a snapshot from that fateful in-store REI purchase six years ago.

Screenshot of Merino wool buff purchase from REI

Still, that was all just the beginning. Six years later, I’ve taken this Merino wool buff on some once-in-a-lifetime adventures. And I have the pictures to prove it!

Man wearing a Merino wool buff on a glacier

As you can see, I rocked this buff on a winter trip to Iceland. It served as my daily scarf/neckwear. And, when we trekked on Vatnajokull glacier, exploring the ice caves and glacial streams, I used it more as a face mask. It was my first wilderness experience using the Buff, and it didn’t disappoint.

Man sitting on top of Half Dome in Yosemite

A few years later, my wife and I took a trip to Yosemite, hiking to the top of Half-dome (we got lucky in the permit lottery). And you guessed it, the same Merino wool buff wrapped around my wrist the whole time, from struggling up the cables to nearly running into a bear!

Since this hiking trip was during the summer, I didn’t use the buff for warmth but for moisture management. It was a glorified sweat rag, so that’s why I wore it around my wrist. Although I did use it as a gaiter during a few brisk mornings in Yosemite Valley.

The buff still held its own years after getting beat up on a glacier and drenched in sweat on Yosemite. It wasn’t ratty (yet) and still looked great as a beanie. My wife even decided to use it on our trip to Portugal!

From traveling worldwide to everyday life, my Merino wool buff has been with me on every adventure. And six years later, as I take on the new experiences of writing and fatherhood, the same Merino wool buff – My Merino Wool Buff – is still going strong.

The Good

Everything. Everything is good about this buff. It’s the best piece of Merino wool gear you’ll ever find. And I’ll argue with any who says otherwise.

But you don’t want my biased buff affection. You want some actual helpful information!

So, from industry-leading versatility and warmth to packability and utility, let’s dive deeper into the four main reasons why I love my Merino wool buff so much!

12 Different Ways To Wear A Buff

Buffs are made for functionality. They replace a scarf, beanie, balaclava, and any type of headwear you plan on wearing. And if you no longer have hair like I do (I’ve changed a lot in six years), having versatile headwear is a must.

In total, there are about a dozen ways to wear a buff in total. Anyone who tells you anything else is just modifying one of the other ways. Don’t listen to them. Listen to me, the guy with an unhealthy infatuation with his Buff.

  • Classic Gaiter: Always ready for adventure. Quickly transforms into a face mask in cold conditions.
  • Beanie/Hat/Cap: Double-layered insulation, excellent for keeping my bald head warm.
  • Sleep Mask: Get some quality shuteye by blocking out the light during the day. Add noise-canceling for the ultimate napping experience.

My buff is the lightweight version (125 gsm), but I use it in all weather conditions. I wear it hiking in the summer to help keep the sun off my neck and wipe away sweat. And, I wear it as a gaiter in the winter to keep my face and neck warm.

Winter and Summer pictures of couple

This buff has such fantastic temperature regulation properties because of the Merino wool! The process is simple, really: sheep live outside, and their coats need to protect them from the sun, rain, wind, and snow. When that wool becomes a Buff, it has the same natural properties.

Check out our comprehensive benefits guide for a deeper, more scientific explanation of Merino wool’s natural properties.

One rarely mentioned benefit of the Merino wool buff is its packability. It is so lightweight (1.7 oz) and convenient that it will be barely detectable in your bag. You can stuff it in the side of your backpack, tuck it away in your suitcase, or even squeeze it in your pocket. And whenever you need it, it’s ready to go!

A folded Merino wool buff on a bed between two dogs

Plus, if you properly care for your buff, it will stay fresh for years. You can wear it casually or save it for mountain expeditions. It will be an essential piece of gear for all your adventures – just as it’s been with mine.

And, if you want to adventure in style, you should get a couple buffs in different colors. My dark gray one is best for versatility, but there are nearly 20 options, so you can choose the color buff that best works with your wardrobe.

My buff is just that – a buff.

It’s sometimes a gaiter or a balaclava; other times, it’s stuffed away in my day bag. But it’s always there.

It always serves its purpose, whatever the purpose may be that day.

I’m such a big fan of this reliability. In six years, there hasn’t been a situation or adventure where I thought, “Maybe I shouldn’t take my buff.” That’s because it’s the most useful, versatile, functional, and reliable clothing accessory on the market.

The Bad

Honestly, I can’t say anything wrong about this buff. Yes, it’s experienced a few ‘bad days’ – which I’ll go over below – but to call these things “Bad” is a gross misrepresentation.

Still, it’s my website, and I will do it anyway!

Alright, one of the downsides of this buff is its durability. At 125 gsm, it’s the same thickness as ~1.5 pieces of paper! That’s super thin! And as you can imagine, I’ve accumulated some wear and tear over six years of adventure.

In all, there are three observable imperfections. The first was after about two years when I cut the tag off improperly. So, really only two that weren’t my fault.

Merino wool buff holes and tears

But here’s the thing, these imperfections are barely noticeable. And I’d say they give the buff a bit of character. The memories from my travels and adventures – which I call battle scars – give my buff its authenticity. And after over half a decade, I would expect any piece of heavily-worn Merino wool gear to show its wear.

Despite these battle scars, I still wear the same buff. I’m wearing it now as I’m typing! And I intend to keep wearing it, holes in all, until every last thread comes undone.

What do you want me to say?! I absolutely love this thing. I mean, it’s just a tube of Merino wool fabric. Buff can’t really improve anything on it. It’s not like they are going to add extra features anytime soon.

It’s not like they can change the manufacturing process to improve it. The fabric is ideal, the versatility is there, and there are tons of different color options.

The lightweight Merino wool buff is immaculate, and they shouldn’t change a thing.

Should You Get A Merino Wool Buff?

Does a one-legged duck swim in a circle? The obvious answer to both questions is ‘yes.’

You should get a Merino wool buff for yourself, one for your brother, one for your mom, and even one for your neighbor. That’s not a joke; these buffs make excellent gifts since they are affordable and practical.

Now, my buff baby is the lightweight Merino wool version, which is best for daily use. Even in frigid conditions, it works well. Still, if you plan on using the buff mainly for arctic expeditions like heli-skiing in the backcountry or shoveling your driveway, you want to get the midweight version instead.

I get it if you’re still on the fence about getting a Merino wool buff. Maybe that whole story about it literally changing my life wasn’t enough. So, to make the decision easier for you, here are my top five reasons why you should – and shouldn’t – own a Merino wool buff.

  • It will get you at least six years of use.
  • It replaces a scarf, beanie, and balaclava.
  • You can take it anywhere.
  • It’s super easy to care for.
  • There’s nothing like a midday nap with a Merino wool buff as a sleep mask.

  • You care nothing about comfort, warmth, or functionality.
  • You’re afraid of sheep.
  • You are a sheep and already have your own wool.
  • You’re a nudist, so you don’t need any clothing at all.
  • You’re a member of the Illuminati and must adhere to a strict dress code.

Final Note About My Merino Wool Buff

That’s all that’s left to say. Hopefully, you’ll believe me when I say that the Merino wool buff changed my life. Merino wool gear wouldn’t be here without it.

Stories aside, this is my most versatile piece of Merino wool gear. To this day, it’s always in my daily bag. I never leave home without it. And you shouldn’t either!

Why Are Merino Wool Gloves Better?

So, what sets Merino wool gloves apart other than we’re an entire site dedicated to them? Bias aside, Merino wool is an excellent thermoregulator, which keeps your hands dry and warm. It’s odor-resistant, wrinkle-resistant, and weather resistant, depending on the glove! Expand the sections below or look at our comprehensive Merino wool benefit guide to learn more about what contributes to Merino wool’s natural properties.

Warmth-to-Weight Ratio

The heavier and bulkier the glove, the harder it is to use your hands. However, lighter gloves may not protect well against the cold. That’s the sweet spot that Merino wool fills. The crimp and spring of the fabric create pockets to trap warm body heat while blocking out the cold. Therefore, you get a lightweight, warm glove without the bulk!

Comfort

Merino wool gloves give you a silky, smooth feel that shouldn’t scratch, itch, or annoy you. Unlike traditional wool, Merino wool feels super soft on your skin. This enhanced comfort is because its fibers are tiny – 16-25 microns – while traditional wool can have a fiber diameter of 40 microns or more.

Odor Resistance

Unlike synthetic materials, which can hold foul odors deep within the fabric configuration, Merino wool doesn’t stink. Its crimped structure traps water vapor, and the water vapor traps nasty smells. And when the water vapor moves into the atmosphere, it takes the odors with it!

Versatility

One of the main reasons Merino wool is such a desirable material is its versatility. Designers discover ways to utilize wool’s natural properties as new manufacturing technologies emerge. Even within the world of gloves, brands use Merino wool differently. For example, there are jersey knit liner liners, cable-knit mittens, wool batting insulation, and so much more!

Best Overall Merino Wool Gloves

Icebreaker Unisex Merino Quantum Gloves

98% Merino, 2% Spandex | Midweight | Touchscreen: Y | 1 color | Price: $$$

Black Merino Wool Gloves With Grips By Icebreaker

Pros: Warmth without bulk | Can be used as liner or standalone | Silicone grips & touchscreen compatible

Cons: Long-term durability concerns | Only one color choice

At the top of our list is a glove with the trifecta of performance: warmth without bulk, dexterity, and versatility. The Icebreaker Merino Wool Quantum gloves are one of our favorites. They perform as gloves or liners, all because you get next-to-skin comfort and warmth that you can’t get with synthetic gloves.

As with much of Icebreaker’s gear, the Merino wool is the star. The soft, brushed texture is due to the glove’s 98% Merino wool terry composition, while the stretchiness comes from adding 2% spandex (LYCRA). Moreover, the midweight, 260-gsm thickness does an excellent job of insulating against the outside environment while still allowing for ample dexterity.

However, the unique design features still influence the Quantum glove’s performance. They don’t have any significant issues with touchscreen use, and the palm has a silicone grip so that you won’t drop your phone. And, if you’re like me – who loses pairs of socks, gloves, and sometimes yes, even shoes – it’s nice that the Quantum gloves have storage clips.

Overall, if you’re looking for a solid pair of everyday Merino wool gloves, something you can rely on daily, then the Icebreaker Quantum gloves should be your top choice.

Best Overall Merino Wool Glove Liners

Ibex Glove Liner

94% Merino, 6% Elastane | 270 gsm | Touchscreen: Y | 1 color | Price: $$$$

A black pair of Ibex Merino Wool Glove Liners

Pros: Low bulk with high warmth | Works as standalone gloves or liners | Extremely packable

Cons: Rather expensive | Hand wash only

During the transition seasons, you may not need a bulky winter glove to keep your hands warm. Instead, wearing a thinner glove with a lower profile may be beneficial if it provides enough warmth. And in the winter months, you can use it as an underlayer liner for added protection. So, scouting all the potential Merino wool glove liners, we’ve discovered this one from Ibex that we can’t get enough of.

At mild temperatures, the midweight Merino wool (270 gsm) performs well enough to keep your hands warm as standalone gloves. However, these gloves use them as a liner underneath an insulated pair in freezing conditions. The Merino wool will keep your next-to-skin climate dry and warm, and the elastane creates a comfortable stretch, so the fabric doesn’t bunch up. This low-profile fit and warmth-without-weight make these Ibex glove liners one of our favorites.

Still, as you can imagine, this well-designed Merino wool liner glove isn’t going to come cheap. It most likely costs more than any pair of gloves you’ve previously purchased. Yet, it’s difficult to beat this Ibex glove liner if you want a sleek, minimal glove with excellent performance properties.

Best Value Merino Wool Glove Liners

Smartwool Liner Glove

48% Merino, 48% Polyester, 4% Elastics & other | Lightweight knit | Touchscreen: Y | 5 colors | Price: $$

Smartwool Merino Wool Liner Glove Navy

Pros: Great touchscreen response | Versatile performance | Affordable

Cons: Some pilling | Long-term durability concerns

As you may have noticed, some of these Merino wool gloves are expensive! However, there are a few options out there that will keep your bank account intact. And, out of these select few, the pair with the best value is the Smartwool Merino wool liner glove.

The Merino wool blend offers a warm, thermo-regulating environment that feels soft against the skin. The recycled polyester adds a touch of strength to last you longer. Moreover, the touchscreen thumb and index finger work well and don’t stick out like a sore thumb. These are functional gloves to stuff in a jacket pocket, toss in a backpack, or wear under some mittens, always ready for an adventure.

Most of all, though, we love that these gloves are affordable. Moreover, Smartwool sometimes offers heavy discounts if you buy out of season. So, what are you waiting for? Check them out below!

Best Long Merino Wool Glove Liners

Helly Hansen LIFA® Merino Glove Liner

57% Merino, 43% Polypropylene | Lightweight (33 grams total) | Touchscreen: Y | 1 color | Price: $$$

A Pair Of Long Black Merino Wool Liner Gloves From Helly Hansen

Pros: Ultralight material| Breathability & warmth | Long wrists for underneath ski gloves

Cons: Potential pilling after wash | Delicate fabric

You may use liners as everyday gloves in the fall, spring, and winter. But sometimes, liner gloves are made to be precisely that, especially if you’re into winter sports. And Helly-Hansen, creator of so much high-tech ski gear, knows this. They have created a long Merino wool liner glove for anyone looking for their next cold-weather adventure.

These Merino wool liner gloves are what you need while shredding down the slopes. The wrists are slightly longer than the other liner gloves we discussed, so you have better coverage underneath your ski gloves.

The magic of these gloves is in the material themselves. Helly Hansen uses their LIFA® Merino blend, which does an excellent job at keeping your hands dry. So if you plan on spending a few days on the powder, these glove liners should be an essential item in your kit!

Best Merino Wool Mittens

Icebreaker Unisex Merino Waypoint Mittens

100% Merino wool | Cable-knit design (~11.3 oz. per glove) | Touchscreen: N | 2 colors | Price: $$$

Gray Icebreaker Merino Waypoint Mittens

Pros: Soft, 18-micron Merino wool | Stylish & warm | Machine washable

Cons: Not for extreme conditions | Odd thumb placement

Gloves or mittens? It’s a split decision. Mittens may not get the dexterity you get with gloves and may be unable to use your phone, but they are so comfy and warm. That’s because your fingers share the heat to stave off the cold. And what better to beat the cold than the Icebreaker Waypoint Mittens

These may look like your grandma’s homemade wool mittens, but they are much, much softer. The classic cable-knit weave helps to trap warm to keep your fingers and hands warm. Although, you need to pair them with glove liners in freezing conditions. These mittens work best for the fall and match well with a Merino wool sweater for a great autumn outfit.

Still, not everything is perfect about these mittens. Some users have noted the odd thumb placement in the glove design. We will admit that the thumb initially feels slightly off, but you get used to it. It’s not anything terrible, just different than what you expect from a mitten.

So if you’re looking for classic, cozy Merino wool mittens, look no further than these Icebreaker Waypoints. Check them out below!

Best Convertible Merino Wool Mittens

Smartwool Cozy Grip Flip Mitt

48% Merino, 48% Polyester, 4% Elastics & other | Traditional rib knit | Touchscreen: Y/N | 1 color | Price: $$$

A pair of gray Merino Smartwool Cozy Grip Flip Mitts

Pros: Warmth without weight | Imitation suede palm for grip | Touchscreen thumb

Cons: Button closure can be tricky | Durability concerns

If you’re looking for a pair of Merino wool mittens but still like the ability to use your fingers, consider a convertible mitten. And in terms of Merino wool, our favorite convertible mitten is the Smartwool Cozy Grip Flip Mitt.

These mittens have the classic fingerless look with a button mitten closure. Although, some users have found the button challenging to fasten at times. Still, this is not so much of an issue as something you get used to over time.

As with all of Smartwool’s products, we love the little features of these mittens. Even though you can operate the touchscreen with your fingers when the mitt is down, Smartwool has added a touchscreen to the thumb so you can still text in mitten mode. It may seem like such a minute detail, but when you get a text in sub-zero temperatures, it makes a difference.

Finally, we must remember the Merino! These gloves use a nearly 50-50 blend of wool and recycled polyester for comfort and strength. There is even a fake suede patch on the palm for extra grip. It’s like Smartwool thought of everything!

Best Merino Wool Fingerless Gloves

Minus33 Lightweight Fingerless Gloves

90% Merino, 7% Stretch, 3% Elastic | Lightweight | Touchscreen: N/A | 6 colors | Price: $

Hunter Green Merino Wool Fingerless Gloves by Minus33

Pros: Simple, functional design | Excellent stretch & recovery | Affordable

Cons: Higher sizes equal longer fingers | Long-term durability concerns

Fingerless gloves may seem counterintuitive because the gloves are supposed to keep your fingers warm. However, some cold-weather activities – like photography, archery, and more – require precision. Your palm and wrist are protected from the cold while your fingertips are ready. And in the world of Merino wool, the best fingerless gloves come from a brand that knows how to survive the cold, Minus33.

These Minus33 Merino wool fingerless gloves blend 90% Merino wool and 10% elastics, giving you a unique mixture of comfort and stretch. However, since the open-finger concept leaves more room for manufacturing errors, we still have some reservations about their long-term durability. But they’re so affordable that if you can get just 2-3 seasons out o them, they will be worth it.

In terms of fit, these gloves come with a low profile to be worn by themselves or underneath a heavier layer. Although, one user reports that the larger the size, the longer the fingers. We recommend consulting Minuss33’s sizing charts if you’re interested in purchasing.

Best Merino Wool Ski Gloves

Ortovox Merino Freeride Glove

Merino wool padding & lining | Insulated (heavyweight) | Touchscreen: N | 2 colors | Price: $$$$$

Black Ortovox Merino Wool Insulated Ski Gloves

Pros: Top-notch fabric technology | Waterproof & windproof | Surprisingly grippy

Cons: Expensive | Preventative care necessary

One of the many advantages of Merino wool as a fabric is its versatility. It can be mixed and matched with materials for added performance and warmth, while the other materials hide some imperfections. As manufacturing technology advances, so does our ability to create specialized, attractive Merino wool clothing. One piece of gear that exemplifies this healthy, unique blend of wool and synthetics is the Ortovox Merino Freeride gloves.

To make them waterproof and windproof, Ortovox uses a two-layer system on the upper portion of the glove. Yet, even though this SympaTex double membrane keeps the elements out, it’s also breathable enough. Throw in Merino wool padding for insulation, Merino wool lining for a comfy next-to-skin feel, and a goatskin leather palm for grip, and you have the perfect glove as you carve through fresh powder all day!

Yet as you can expect with such a finely crafted glove, the Ortovox Merino Freerides are on the expensive side of the price spectrum. Still, they are worth a try if you explore the backcountry slopes multiple times a year. Make sure to give them a peek today!

Best Merino Wool Hiking Gloves

Smartwool Merino Sport Fleece Wind Mitten

47% Polyester, 38% Merino, 15% Elastane (body) | Midweight | Touchscreen: Y | 3 colors | Price: $$$

Smartwool Merino Sport Windproof Mittens in Black Cherry

Pros: High-performing material & design| Added mitten wind cover | Silicone palm grip

Cons: Challenging to put on & take off | Manufacturing inconsistencies

When you’re out on the trail, conditions can quickly worsen. So, it’s imperative to pack gear that functions in various temperatures. The Smartwool Merino Sport Fleece Wind Mitten does just that. It’s your standard glove with an extra, wind-resistant mitten cover that can stow away. So, in mild conditions, you’ve got a high-performing glove; in colder conditions, you get additional protection from the mitten.

Smartwool uses a blend of Merino wool and synthetics for these gloves so that they can live up to the wear and tear of the outdoors. Plus, you get that super soft next-to-skin feel from Merino. Although, since they are such a snug fit, it may be challenging to put them on if you’re outdoors in nasty conditions.

And as you may know, Smartwool always incorporates some incredible features into their gear, and these Merino wool wind mittens are no different. The thumb and index finger have excellent touchscreen compatibility for checking the trail map on your phone. The silicone grips come in handy to prevent chafing from your trekking polls. There are even reflective elements for all of you early-morning joggers. So, these Smartwool wind mittens are up for any outdoor adventure.

Most Unique Merino Wool Gloves

Öjbro Swedish Merino Wool Mittens

100% Merino wool | Mid-to-heavyweight | Touchscreen: N | 21+ colors | Price: $$$$

Pros: Pillow-like comfort | Timeless mitten design | Dozens of patterns

Cons: Durability concerns | Rather expensive

The Scandinavians know a thing or two about warm clothing. Outlasting the cold is how their society has flourished, and these traditions continue today, even with newer fabrics, Merino wool. Swedish designer Åse Öjbro has returned the timeless wool mitten look with dozens of Nordic patterns and tons of comfort. True classics that have yet to go out of style.

The finely knit Merino wool is cozy, with almost a pillow-like crimp. Yet, this knit is also somewhat delicate, and some users have reported that the palms wear out over time with heavy use. However, we wouldn’t classify these mittens as heavy use. They are more of a cozy winter style for commuting or going out.

So, if you’re looking for something more casual than high-performing, these Öjbro Swedish Merino Wool Mittens are a solid choice. And yes, they may be slightly expensive, but they look good!

Most Versatile Merino Wool Gloves

Whitepeak Merino Wool and Possumdown Gloves

53% Merino, 29% Possumdown, 16% nylon, 2% elastic | Midweight | Touchscreen: N | 3 colors | Price: $$

Pros: Simple, versatile design | Good wrist length | Insulative possumdown

Cons: May wear out quickly with heavy use | May feel scratchy at first

Warm. Versatile. Comfortable. What else could you ask for in a pair of gloves? These Merino wool and possumdown gloves combine two high-performing animal fibers into one pair of high-performing gloves. You get all the beneficial properties of Merino with a touch of fur from the brushtail possum.

So, what makes possumdown so unique? Just as Merino wool has special fiber properties, so does brushtail possum fur. It’s one of the most insulating knitwear available! The fibers themselves are hollow, which allows more area to trap hot air. Combine that with Merino wool, and you get a warm pair of gloves you can rely on daily.

So, grab a couple to throw in your backpack and one for your car. Someday, these Whitepeak gloves may come in handy.

Best Merino Wool Running Gloves

Smartwool Merino Sport Fleece Glove

47% Polyester, 38% Merino, 15% Elastane | Midweight | Touchscreen: Y | 3 colors | Price: $$$

Smartwool Merino Sport Fleece Running Glove Cherry

Pros: Warmth without bulk | Silicone grip | Excellent dexterity

Cons: Sizing inconsistencies | Manufacturing quality

Whether you enjoy chilly autumn runs or long winter jogs, you need a glove that can perform regardless of the elements. Something that keeps your fingers toasty while also regulating your perspiration (sweaty hands equals cold hands). One pair of gloves designed to find the sweet spot between temperature and moisture regulation is the Smartwool Merino Sport Fleece Glove.

These Merino Sport Fleece Gloves are the same as the mitten version above but without the extra windscreen. You still get the strength and warmth from the recycled polyester and Merino wool blend, yet there is a much sleeker, next-to-skin profile. And even if you sweat too much, Merino wool keeps you warm if wet.

Finally, these Merino wool running gloves may look simple, but they are full of performance features. The back overlay is wind-resistant, the touchscreen compatibility works well, and there are also additional reflective elements for safety. So, next time you’re gearing up for a cold-weather run, wear your new Merino Sport Fleece Gloves.

Best Merino Wool Biking Gloves

Giro D’Wool Urban Cycling Gloves

Merino wool uppers (suede palms) | Lightweight | Touchscreen: Y | 4 colors | Price: $$$

Pros: Tailored construction | Engineered fit | Durable suede palm

Cons: Seam durability | No padding

Modeled after their famous Down and Dirty gloves, these Giro D’wool make an excellent companion for any cycling tour. The backing (upper) is a lightweight, breathable Merino wool material that shouldn’t stink up over time. Moreover, Giro participates in the MAPP program, ensuring all their material is of the highest quality and sourced sustainably.

Yet, unlike some of the other gloves on our list, the wool isn’t the star of the show. In this case, it’s the suede palm. Well, the Super Fit engineered AX Suede™ palm, to be exact. This three-panel glove design keeps the fabric tight and taut, so you don’t get any bunching or excess, reducing the chance of blisters. What else would you expect from an advanced-technology cycling brand?

These Giro D’wool gloves are great if you’re a daily commuter, road warrior, or casual rider. They have a comfortable, engineered fit, superb breathability, and an undervalued suede grip. Plan your next ride and grab a pair before they’re gone!

Best Merino Wool Hunting Gloves

SITKA Gear Merino Glove

Nylon face, Merino wool lining | Midweight (230 gsm) | Touchscreen: Y | 3 colors | Price: $$$

Pros: Lightweight & breathable | Various camouflage patterns | Soft, 17.5-micron wool interior

Cons: No adjustable closure | Grip too slick for bowhunting

In the spirit of transparency, we are not hunters. We have nothing against it, and it can even be good for conservation and biodiversity, but it’s not our thing. Our thing is Merino wool gear. And one popular piece of gear sweeping the Merino wool hunting world is the SITKA gear Merino glove.

The reason they have become so favored is because of their camouflage patterns. The GORE® OPTIFADE™ Concealment is designed based on animal vision rather than the surrounding environment. For example, the “Elevated II” pattern – made for treestand whitetail hunting – mixes in micro and macro patterns, so the gloves, and the hunter, remain nearly invisible to deer.

In terms of specific use, these Merino gloves are warm enough for mid-to-late season hunting but lack a sturdy grip. Some users have noted that it shouldn’t affect you if you’re rifle hunting, but it could be an issue if you’re a bow hunter.

Best Merino Wool Roper Gloves

Duckworth Powder Roper Gloves

3-oz. tanned deerskin (exterior), 50% Merino, 50% synthetic (lining) | 300 gsm | Touchscreen: N | 2 colors | Price: $$$$$

Duckworth Powder Roper Merino Wool Gloves Tan

Pros: Rugged durability | Performs well in sub-zero temperatures | 100% sourced & manufactured in USA

Cons: Must perform preventative maintenance | Pricey

If you aren’t familiar with Duckworth, it may be time to start. The exciting aspect of Duckworth as a Merino wool brand is that it raises all its sheep in Montana and manufactures its clothing 100% in the United States of America. Their knowledge and expertise stem from keeping their sheep happy, even in the rugged terrain of the Rockies. And one gear that both their ranch hands – and Merino wool lovers – go crazy about is their Roper gloves.

The lining is a heavyweight, 300-gsm Merino wool (Duckworth’s Powder fabric), so you get an extra soft next-to-skin feel. However, the exterior is 3-oz. tanned deerskin leather, which provides rugged flexibility and dexterity. Still, as with most leather products, these Roper gloves require proper care to increase their wear life.

So, if you’re looking for a tough working glove to withstand alpine-like conditions, look no further. These Duckworth Powder Roper gloves are your best option!

Best Lightweight Merino Wool Gloves

Outdoor Research Merino 150 Sensor Liners

100% Merino wool Interlock Knit | Ultralight (150 gsm) | Touchscreen: Y | 3 colors | Price: $$$

Pros: Top moisture management properties | Ultralight fabric | Tapered construction

Cons: Need overlayer for freezing temps | Wear & tear concerns

We’ve covered some Merino wool glove liners in the 200-300 gsm category. This mid-to-heavyweight thickness is necessary if you’re fighting against bone-chilling temperatures. However, some high-intensity activities call for something super ultralight, and these Outdoor Research Merino 150 Sensor Liner gloves are the lightest pair out there.

You may be thinking: “aren’t ultralight gloves counterintuitive?” And the answer depends on how you use them. For example, you’ll only survive with these gloves above freezing. However, since they are low-profile and lightweight (150 gsm is about as thick as two pieces of paper), you can use these liners with any heavier shell to add 10-15 °F protection and ultimate moisture management.

Still, Outdoor Research understands that these ultralight liners only suit some. So if you think they are still too light, don’t worry. Just grab the same design in a midweight, 220-gsm fabric. As for us, we’ll stick to the 150-gsm liners for their feather-like weight and easy packability. Learn more about these Outdoor Research Merino Sensor Liners below!

Best Heavyweight Merino Wool Gloves

Icebreaker Unisex MerinoLoft™ Mittens

Merino Wool insulation (waterproof exterior) | Heavyweight | Touchscreen: N | 1 color | Price: $$$$$

Icebreaker Unisex MerinoLoft Merino Wool Ski Mittens

Pros: High-tech wool design | Ultra warm | Adjustable skirt

Cons: Could use an extra wrist strap | Thumb size may feel awkward

The wide variety of gloves on this list does an excellent job showcasing Merino wool’s manufacturing versatility. You get everything from simple knit liners to complex, multi-fabric gloves. But, no glove by itself is more intricate or does a better job highlighting the benefits of Merino wool than these Icebreaker MerinoLoft™Mittens.

The crazy thing about these mittens is that the lining, shell, and insulation are all Merino wool! Icebreaker uses its MerinoLoft™ technology for warmth and its Shell+™ technology for weather resistance. Combining these two gives you a toasty Merino wool mitten for all your cold-weather pursuits.

With this much fabric technology in one glove, you better believe some cool features also exist. These MerinoLoft™mittens have an articulated construction, adjustable skirt, and elastic wrist cuffs to keep everything in place (although the latter could benefit from an extra strap). Throw the reinforced finger panels on top of that, and you have the ultimate cold-weather mitten, Merino wool or not! So head over to Icebreaker, and test them out.

Best Merino Wool Gloves For Commuters

Hestra Merino Touch Point Glove Liner

70% Merino wool, 30% nylon | Midweight (270 gsm) | Touchscreen: Y | 1 color | Price: $$$

Hestra Merino Wool Touchpoint Glove Liner Gray

Pros: Functional & fashionable | Easily packable | Low-profile fits most shells

Cons: Wear on sensor pads | Not super durable

We can’t create a list of the ‘best gloves’ and not include Hestra. As one of today’s premier glovemakers, Hestra uses nearly a century of experience to craft some of the warmest, comfiest, and most highly-specialized gloves – over 400 styles – out there. Among the many hundred designs, a handful uses Merino wool. Within these select few, the Touch Point 5-Finger Liners are our favorites.

These liners are ideal for commuting as they are highly packable and provide an extra layer of protection in a pinch. Moreover, the thumb and pointer finger have a grid-like touchscreen coating, so you can still check Waze on your way to work. However, some users have reported that these sensor pads may wear down over time. So, we would only use it for simple swiping and nothing more intense.

These gloves are a great companion to heavier shells during winter commutes or simply as an extra pair of gloves in your workbag for inclement weather. They are lightweight and barely occupy space, but the 270-gsm ZQ Merino fabric insulates above its weight. Check out a pair today!

Best Merino Wool Hand Warmers

Smartwool Isto Hand Warmer

48% Merino, 43% Nylon, 9% Polyester | Cable-knit construction| Touchscreen: Y | 3 colors | Price: $$

Smartwool Isto Merino Wool Hand Warmers

Pros: Full use of fingers | Cable-knit construction | Affordable

Cons: Delicate fabric | Wear & tear concerns

You may think wearing gloves inside is a bit strange. That’s because it is! Still, if you’re like many of us, you have poor circulation in your fingers. Or, you’re stingy (also like us) and want to save on your energy bill during the winter. In either case, the Smartwool Isto Handwarmers are a must-have.

Just something about these hand warmers screams, “we’re cozy.” The heavyweight cable-knit construction doesn’t scratch like traditional wool and has plenty of bulk (but not too much) to trap in warm air. And the best part, you have complete dexterity in your fingers. Even the thumb hole is open.

Anyways, if you’re looking for a simple pair of gloves for milder conditions, try these hand warmers. These gloves give us that hygge vibe that we love. And we know the coziness won’t last forever, but they deserve your attention, especially at their current price tag.

Best “Grippy” Merino Wool Gloves

Mons Royale Amp Merino Fleece Gloves

59% Polyester, 36% Merino, 5% Elastane | Midweight (265 gsm) | Touchscreen: Y | 2 colors | Price: $$$$

Mons Royale Midweight Amp Merino Wool Fleece Gloves Tan

Pros: Unique palm grip | Excellent for touring | Top-notch durability

Cons: May feel bulky around fingers | Limited versatility

So far, you’ve seen a lot of Merino wool gloves with a specialized grip. Some have a silicone grid, while others have an added suede patch. However, you have yet to see a grip pattern like the ones on these Amp Merino Fleece Gloves from Mons Royale. The entire grip design matches the topography of the Mount Aspiring Range – a region of the Southern Alps – in New Zealand. Aptly name for an outdoor brand that is self-proclaimed to be “born from the mountains of New Zealand.

These gloves are a helpful way to expand your touring kit. We suggest packing them in your jacket if the weather gets too warm for your heavier ski gloves but not warm enough to go without them. You could get an insulating mitten overtop; however, putting on a five-finger glove shell may be challenging as the fingers are slightly bulky.

Finally, Mons Royale understands that the backcountry is full of rugged landscapes, and their gloves can fully live up to the rigors of the frontier. These are their strongest Merino Fleece gloves, mainly due to the inclusion of a polyester outer.

So, whether prepping for a multi-day tour or planning a spring ski trip, try the Amp Merino Fleece Gloves – and more high-performing gear – from Mons Royale.

Final Note About Merino Wool Gloves

And there you have it: the best Merino wool gloves, glove liners, mittens, and more! We love how this collection truly showcases the power of Merino wool. You have everything from simple knit gloves to highly-engineered mittens with wool insulation. There are fingerless gloves and handwarmers for extra dexterity, and even hardcore roper gloves for even the most rugged activities.

Hopefully, you were able to discover a pair of Merino wool gloves that suits your needs. However, if you didn’t find any of these options handy (pun intended), don’t fret! We’re always scouring the Merino world to find you the latest and greatest gear available. So, give us a follow on any of the socials below, or sign-up for our newsletter. At Merino Wool Gear, we love getting technical about clothing. We love the ins and outs of design, manufacturing, sourcing, etc. And rather than examining a single product, we often review brands as a whole. And one brand that is just as technical as we are: Duckworth Merino wool.

So, whether you’ve tried Duckworth Merino wool before or are a happy returning customer, we hope to provide more information about one of our favorite Merino wool brands.

Disclosure: Merino Wool Gear DOES NOT sponsor products to maintain our genuineness and authenticity. However, as an affiliate member, we may earn a small commission from qualifying purchases.

Brief History

According to Duckworth, the idea for a clothing brand first started on a Montana ski lift. However, their history and legacy can be traced back centuries. And that’s no exaggeration.

Duckworth co-founder John Helle is a fourth-generation sheep farmer. The Helle ranch in Montana is home to tens of thousands of acres of green pasturelands where the Merino sheep live freely. They get shaved once a year, and that wool gets processed into Duckworth apparel.

And the best part about Duckworth’s wool is that all the materials are source-verified. The supply chain stays within the United States, and as the consumer, that savings gets passed on to you.

Nowadays, the Helle family’s fifth generation is almost running the ranch, and Duckworth sells the clothing. And let us tell you, it’s by far some of the highest-quality, most unique Merino wool we’ve tested!

Duckworth Merino Wool Specialties

Duckworth focuses on cold-weather outdoor gear and layering pieces. They offer various products, including tees, tanks, bottoms, outerwear, and more!

In our opinion, their clothing style is not as modern as other brands, but rather timeless. Along with the classic look, Duckworth creates their clothing to withstand the harsh winters in the Rockies and the hot Montana summers. In other words, Duckworth’s Merino wool clothing protects you from the elements, just as it does with the sheep.

“…if a piece of Duckworth clothing can survive the intense demands of a Montana ranch, it can survive anything.”

Duckworth – About Us

So whether you’re a skier, hiker, rancher, traveler, or just need an extra warm (and extra comfy) piece of Merino wool clothing, Duckworth has the gear for you.

Where Does Duckworth Source Their Wool?

Unlike many brands that source Merino wool from Australia or New Zealand, Duckworth gets their wool from sheep in the USA. Dillon, Montana, to be exact. And it’s a slightly different breed of Merino sheep than you may expect.

Duckworth uses Helle Rambouillet sheep, a close cousin to Merino. They split from the Merino breed in 1786, when King Louis XVI purchased 300 Merino sheep from his cousin in Spain. A couple of generations later, this new Rambouillet breed ended up in the USA.

Duckworth Sheep on snowy Helle Ranch, Montana

Centuries of separation in differing climates have created slight differences in the wool. For example, the Rambouillet sheep in Montana experience harsher conditions than Australian Merino sheep. So, the wool they produce is slightly hardier. It’s made to withstand the frigid Montana winters and surprisingly warm summers. So when it’s spun and knitted, you get the same natural weather-fighting capabilities as the sheep!

Nowadays, the Helle Ranch is home to 10,000 Ramboiullet sheep. They thrive in the lush pastures of the Rockies. Duckworth does their best to transform this natural material into comfortable, stylish clothes for your wardrobe. But really, the sheep are the star of the show.

Sustainability & Ethics

Merino wool is, in itself, a sustainable material. Sheep eat grass, soak up the sun, get shorn, and then the cycle continues. Yet, Duckworth goes the extra mile in maintaining their land. With four generations (and the fifth nearly running the show), the Helle family understands the importance of respecting the meadows and pastures their sheep depend upon. They are self-proclaimed ‘Stewards of the land,‘ and rightfully so. With centuries of experience and continued success, they are as sustainable as possible in today’s business world.

And as you can imagine, as the sheep are the star of the show, they are treated as the star of the show. Duckworth is upfront and transparent about its ethical treatment of its sheep. They basically live as wild animals, munching on the grasses and wildflowers of the Rocky Mountains. In fact, Duckworth says they only come in contact with humans a few days per year when they’re shaved for the summer months.

When they are free to graze, the sheep are happy. Happy sheep produce higher-quality wool with a springier crimp and more temperature regulation properties. So, with everything they do to make their sheep happy, we must give Duckworth an A+ rating in the ethics department.

If you want to learn more about the ethics behind Merino wool as a whole, you can check out our comprehensive ethics guide here.

What We Like

Aside from Duckworth’s commitment to its sheep and the land, we would like to highlight a few more aspects of its brand. This is a partial list with many more positives, yet the following traits set Duckworth apart from the competition.

Fabric Performance & Creativity

While many Merino brands showcase their products at the forefront, some are more secretive about the technology behind their fabrics. However, Duckworth is 100% transparent about the material they use and with an easy naming system. For example, the Vapor hoody is made of the same material as the Vapor briefs!

In fact, Duckworth goes the extra mile to showcase their fabric by explaining each one in-depth on their YouTube channel. We’ve summarized their catalog of materials below, but check out each link if you’re interested in learning more.

Supply Chain Optimization

Compared with other Merino wool brands, Duckworth is one of the most transparent about their supply chain. They know precisely where their wool comes from and where it goes, from their farm to your closet. And, the best part is, it always stays in the United States!

See, other brands may get their wool from Australia, manufacture the fabric in China, then sell it as a garment in America. However, as you’ve read, Duckworth keeps all production steps within the USA. They get all their wool from their ranch in Montana, then send it to various US locations for scouring, spinning, dying, knitting, and garment production.

Duckworth American Supply Chain Map

While keeping the entire supply chain within the country is green and more affordable, we love it so much because the savings are passed on to you, the customer. Duckworth knows that to keep its customers happy, it must create high-quality at a reasonable price. And they are doing just that.

Areas For Improvement

It seems like Duckworth knows their wool, and they understand what their customers want. Yet, as with every Merino wool brand, they face unique challenges. We wouldn’t necessarily say that the following are negatives but observations that could improve their already-reputable operation.

Larger Color Selection

The men’s collection contains neutral yet unique colors like desert sand, cabin red sage, spruce, and midnight. And on the women’s side, you get the same collections, with a couple extra pastel shades. Looking at the entire Duckworth collection, you may think: “there are tons of colors. What’s this guy even talking about?” Well, it’s not so much about the broad range of colors but the variety of options for each product.

For example, the Duckworth Snowcrest shirt only comes in black, and many of the heavyweight apparel have limited color spectrums. We’d like to see a broader range of colors overall; however, that’s purely out of personal preference.

More Size Availability

We love to help people find the perfect piece of Merino Wool Gear (hence, our name). And as you know, people come in all shapes and sizes. Thus, we like to see brands carry all sizes in all color options. Obviously, that’s not always possible. In Duckworth’s case, they only have the full selection of sizes (Men’s S-XXL, Women’s XS-XL) for their most popular sellers, while some of the more niche products are sporadically available.

From a business perspective, this makes perfect sense. Why would Duckworth carry extra inventory for lower-performing items? And since they have a limited wool supply from their herd of 10,000 sheep, they put more raw material into their best sellers. We can’t blame them for their size variations, but it would still be nice if some sizes didn’t sell out so quickly.

But, there is a positive here. Duckworth is one of the few Merino wool brands that allows for size and color notifications when items are out of stock. So, if you don’t see your size, just enter your email and wait for the alert!

Our Favorite Duckworth Merino Wool Gear

Now that you’ve learned much about Duckworth as a brand, it’s time to look closely at our favorite products. The following five pieces of gear combine what Duckworth considers their bestsellers with a couple of added products worth highlighting. Check it out below!

Duckworth Men’s Powder Hoody

50% Merino, 20% Polyester, 30% Acrylic | 300 gsm | Relaxed fit | 6 colors

Men's Duckworth Merino Wool Hoody in Dark Gray

Made for everything from cold-weather adventure to everyday use, the Powder Hoody is one of our favorite Duckworth Merino wool gear pieces! The soft, comfortable fabric feels excellent against your skin, and you won’t experience the itchiness of traditional wool hoodies. Moreover, the Powder fabric is warm yet lightweight, without any actual bulk. So, you can easily layer something underneath or overtop, depending on the weather.

If you want to learn more about this piece of Merino wool gear, check out the link below. Or, if you’d like, learn more about the best Merino wool hoodies here. Spoiler alert: this Powder Hoody made the list!

Duckworth Women’s Powder High Neck

50% Merino, 20% Polyester, 30% Acrylic | 300 gsm | Relaxed fit | 5 colors

Duckworth Merino Wool Women's High Neck Pullover Dark Gray

Like the Men’s Powder Hoody, this women’s High Neck is soft, plush, cozy, and all-around comfy. You get warmth without the weight and a classic, timeless style that will last you for years.

In terms of design, it’s an oversized turtleneck but not so much a cowl neck. We classify it as a Merino wool sweater, but it’s more like a hoody with the hood (or lack thereof) designed around the neck.

In short, if you decide to get one for yourself, the Duckworth women’s Powder High Neck will be your go-to cold-weather layering piece. So, see if it fits into your wardrobe today!

Duckworth Men’s Vapor Brief

38% Merino, 50% Polyester, 12% Modal | 150 gsm (ultralight) | Standard fit | 6 colors

Duckworth Vapor Briefs Various Colors

We’ve always said the best Merino wool underwear is the pair that you can barely feel. You want something comfy yet durable, supportive but not restrictive. And with a silky-smooth next-to-skin feel, the Duckworth Vapor Briefs are some of the best underwear.

The comfort level of these briefs is insane. The ultralight, odor-proof, itch-free Vapor fabric keeps your private area dry and cool. Moreover, the brushed waistband and functional fly add to the comfort level.

So, if you’re in the market for a new pair of Merino wool briefs, look no further. And once you try these Duckworth Merino wool underwear, you’ll never want to go back.

Duckworth Knit Rigger Hat (Unisex)

Ribbed Merino wool knit | Casual fit | One size | 6 colors

Duckworth Knit Rigger Merino Wool Hat Yellow

The Duckworth Knit Rigger hat is a classic, stylish beanie that will get you through those cold winter months. This may look like your traditional beanie, but it’s much better. Moreover, since Merino wool keeps you warm when it’s cool out and cool when it’s warm, you can wear it in the spring and fall without sweating. It just has that friendly, cozy vibe that we love so much.

The knit itself isn’t too thick, making it much easier to use the adjustable cuff. You can even wear the Knit Rigger hat as a hipster beanie if you’d like. Plus, there are half-a-dozen colors to choose from (Military Green and Goldrush are our favorites). Whichever color you choose, whether you wear it cuffed or slouched, this Duckworth Knit Rigger hat will be your go-to beanie.

Duckworth Powder Roper Gloves (Unisex)

Exterior: 3-oz. tanned deerskin | Lining: 50% Merino, 20% Polyester, 30% Acrylic | 300 gsm (lining) | 2 colors

Duckworth Powder Roper Merino Wool Gloves Tan

These gloves must be one of our favorite and most unique pieces of Merino wool gear. The interior is lined with Duckworth’s 300-gsm Powder fabric, providing a warm and dry microclimate for your hands. However, the outside is tanned deerskin courtest of Sullivan Glove Co. in Oregon, making them strong, solid, and 100% made in the USA.

This rare mixture of wool and deerskin shows the incredible range of Merino wool. From hoodies to underwear to beanies, Merino wool does it all! Check out these Duckworth Powder Roper gloves below for more info!

Where Can I Find Duckworth Wool Sales?

If you’re looking for an easy way to score deals on Duckworth Merino won’t clothing, you might be out of luck. While they often have blanket holiday discounts and closeout sales, they are rarer than competing brands. Although, this lack of consistent deals is not out of disrespect to you as a customer. It’s mainly because Duckworth only sources their wool from their sheep, so there is less raw material overall. And if the clothes are so exclusive, there is little inventory for Duckworth to discount.

Although, if you plan on purchasing in the future, you can sign up for Duckworth’s loyalty program. You get $10 off for every 100 points you earn, and points are earned by spending money or performing other tasks. For example, after signing up, you can get 15 points for reading more about their wool, 35 points for sharing Duckworth content on Facebook, and 200 points for your birthday. A max of 600 points ($60 off) are allowed per order, so passing up on the loyalty program is challenging when the benefits far outweigh the efforts it takes to activate them.

Warranty & Return Policy

Duckworth is proud of their garments, which is why their warranty is so customer-centric. If your Duckworth gear fails due to a manufacturing defect within twelve months of the order, they will replace it for free. This does not include shrunk, pilled, neglected, or otherwise improperly cared-for gear. So start a warranty claim, send a pic to customerservice@duckworthco.com, and they’ll sort you all out.

Moreover, if you get a piece of clothing that doesn’t fit or isn’t what you expected, Duckworth offers a simple return process. Just input your order number and zip code into their Happy Returns Portal, and follow the steps. Best of all, you’ll even get free return shipping if your order qualifies!

Versatile. Stylish. Functional. The vest is just a classic piece for any wardrobe. You can layer it underneath a heavy coat in the cold or throw it on over a long sleeve for those cool nights. And out of all the fabrics, Merino wool vests are the best! So, we’ve put together a list of our eleven favorites to help you search for your perfect vest.

While you may think: “isn’t a vest just a vest?” Well, not really. Due to its natural properties, Merino wool can be incorporated in various ways – lining, shell, insulation, etc. – and many vests have technical features that work well for rugged outdoor activities. From the mountains to the office, there are plenty of styles to choose from.

We hope you invest some of your time and check out what the world of men’s Merino wool vests has to offer. Enjoy!

Why The Merino Wool Vest Is Best

Before we get into our favorite vests, you may want to know why Merino wool is the best vest material. And while we can sometimes be a little biased, there’s no doubting how fantastic wool can be. It’s warm yet lightweight, comfortable, versatile, and even stylish!

We want you to understand the power of Merino and how it can work with your lifestyle. So, learn more about these properties below before discovering the Merino wool vest that works for you!

Warmth-to-Weight Ratio

Vests are meant to do one thing: keep your core warm. Yet, you don’t want something too bulky if you need to throw an extra layer overtop. And Merino wool provides these thermo-regulation properties but without the excess weight.

Think about it. Sheep are always outside and need some protection from the elements. Their wool needs to trap their body heat if it’s too cold. Yet if it’s too warm, it needs to breathe so the sheep can cool down. And, with a Merino wool vest, you harness these same temperature-regulation properties!

Ultimate Comfort

One of the many benefits of Merino wool is that it has a silky, soft next-to-skin feel. That’s why they make such great base layers! However, you won’t be going bare-chested underneath your vest. So, how is Merino wool still so comfortable, even as a midlayer?

Well, that’s where the vest design comes into play. You want to avoid floppy or loose fabric rubbing the wrong areas. Moreover, you don’t want your vest to be too constricting that you don’t have a full range of motion. Whether it’s stay-put collars, offset shoulder seams, or a specialized athletic fit, these vests with your comfort in mind.

Versatility & Function

A solid vest plays a significant part in any functional wardrobe. You can layer it over top or underneath. Wear it casual with sweats or dress it up with a button-down (a Merino wool button-down, of course). Or, pack it in your everyday bag in case of a weather emergency!

You can genuinely wear a Merino wool vest in nearly every social situation, work meeting, or anywhere your adventures take you!

Timeless Style

No flashes. No frills. You may not think of vests as fashionable, but functional is fashionable. You can wear some vets with a casual wardrobe, while others work better with formalwear. And, as you’ll see with some of these Merino wool vests, a few are informal and formal.

So, in terms of your style, understand how you will use your new Merino wool vest. Many of these pieces are expensive, which is one of the disadvantages of Merino Wool. At the end of the day, we want you to get your money’s worth and look good while doing it.

Best Overall Men’s Merino Wool Vest

Woolx Stowe Vest

80% Merino, 20% Polyamide | Heavyweight (340 gsm) | Relaxed fit | 3 colors | Price: $$$

Woolx Merino wool vest olive green

Pros: Versatile layering piece | Moisture-repellent | Unique textured knit

Cons: Dry clean only | Rather expensive

Aptly named after a quaint ski village in Vermont, the Woolx Stowe vest is the best Merino wool vest we’ve tried. The heavyweight material is insulative yet doesn’t possess the bulk of a puffer vest. That’s why it’s such a great layering piece! You can wear it underneath a jacket, and it will still feel comfortable. Or, wear it overtop a long-sleeve or hoodie in milder conditions for extra warmth. And, since it’s water-repellent, you may not even need a rain jacket!

One of the reasons the Stowe vest provides all of these features is the unique boucle knit design. Unlike some smoother fabrics on this list, the boucle knit creates a nubby texture, resulting from the looped yarn and densely-knitted weaving patterns. This adds warmth, water-repellency, and an element of class. So, in the end, Woolx has created a comfy, flattering, warm, and high-performing vest.

Unfortunately, even with all of these benefits, there’s still one downside: ‘dry clean only.’ It may not be a dealbreaker for you, but it also might not be as convenient as other options. All we’re saying is to factor this – and the price tag – into your decision, so you get the best vest for you!

Runner-Up: Best Merino Wool Vest

Ibex Shak Vest

100% Merino wool Ponti | Heavyweight (375 gsm) | Athletic fit | 5 colors | Price: $$$$

Ibex Mens Shak Vest Five Colors

Pros: Dense, low-profile weave | Natural stretch & recovery | Excellent for outdoor adventures

Cons: Relatively pricey | Some users prefer the previous version

If you’re always on the go, hiking the next trail, or hopping on the next flight, you’ll want to check out the Ibex Shak Vest. This vest is built for adventure, as is all of Ibex’s gear. The heavyweight specialized fabric is warm yet breathable, and the low-profile construction makes it a great underlayer or overlayer. What else would you expect from a vest named after the famous Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton?

We do really love the minimalist design of this Merino wool vest. The fit is slimming, which prevents fabric bunching while layering, yet there is still ample room for movement. There is even a natural stretch to the material, which is perfect for high-intensity outdoor activities. Moreover, there are a ton of engineered features that Ibex has included within the design. There are three semi-hidden pockets (two sides, one chest) and a stand-up collar for extra warmth. Even the zippers are spring-loaded for stealthiness and have wind guards for protection against inclement conditions.

Yet, as you can imagine, a price comes with this top-notch material and high-quality craftsmanship. The real question you have to ask yourself is: is this vest worth it for me? In our opinion, if you’re more of the hang-around-the-house type, you may want to look elsewhere. However, the Ibex Shak Vest is a fitting choice if you plan on living a life filled with adventure.

Best Quilted Merino Wool Vest

Icebreaker Men’s ZoneKnit Merino Vest

100% Merino wool | Heavyweight (quilted front) | Slim fit | 2 colors | Price: $$$$$

Icebreaker Men's Zone Knit Quilted Merino Wool Vest Black

Pros: Top warmth-to-weight ratio | Reinforced shoulder panes for carrying backpacks | Machine washable

Cons: Finicky zipper | Super expensive (we really mean it this time)

Calling all backcountry explorers, mountain adventures, and cold-weather warriors: the Icebreaker ZoneKnit™ Insulated vest is a must-have. Not only is it top in its class for warmth-to-weight, but it is lightweight and packable; that way, you can carry less on those long alpine trips. And yes, we get it; it’s expensive (and we really mean it this time). However, it’s the best for what it does – Merino wool or not – and it’s hard to put a price on that. So don’t scroll past it just yet.

We call this a quilted vest, but as Icebreaker says, it’s more of a performance vest. That’s because they engineered nearly every aspect of it to perform for any cold-weather adventure. The unique ‘body-mapped’ design keeps you toasty but not too hot. For example, the quilted front traps in body heat for an insulative effect around your core, while the back is unquilted with venting, as you don’t want to sweat through your backpack. Plus, there are reinforced shoulder panes to prevent chafing if your pack is too heavy.

Altogether, this high level of craftsmanship trickles down to every feature of the ZoneKnit™ vest. The two-way front zipper provides fine-tuned ventilation, while the double-layered collar keeps your neck nice and warm. Also, there are two front handwarmer pockets and two internal ‘dump pockets‘ to store gloves. It’s like the experts at Icebreaker really know their stuff.

Best Fleece Merino Wool Vest

Smartwool Hudson Plaid Fleece Vest

45-55% Merino blend | Mid-to-heavyweight | Regular fit | 7 colors | Price: $$

Smartwool Mens Hudson Plaid Merino Wool Vest Blue Orange Pattern

Pros: Great fabric strength & versatility | Multiple color options | Priced affordably

Cons: May seem bulkier than expected | Not as form-fitting as other options

In the world of Merino wool gear, Smartwool makes the Mount Rushmore. And this Hudson Plaid Fleece Vest exhibits the craftsmanship and quality that Smartwool represents. The fabric is a unique blend of recycled wool and synthetic material, so you get softness from Merino and strength from synthetics. This makes it easier to care for in the long run as it’s not as susceptible to snags or tears as pure Merino wool.

What we love about the Hudson fleece vest – and many of Smartwool’s extensive Merino collections – is the mixture of functionality and style. For example, this vest has a classy yet casual cut, making it perfect as an outer layer in the spring and fall. Moreover, the faux leather zippers on the zippered pockets (two front, one chest) add to the vintage outerwear look. You can wear it on the trail, to a party, in the office, or on the couch!

Although, some users have reported that the vest’s fit isn’t as ‘regular’ as you may expect. Moreover, you can’t necessarily tell from the images, but the fabric is also bulkier than expected. So, if you’re looking for a designated layering piece, look for a slimmer, more form-fitting option.

And if you love this style but aren’t a fan of the vest aesthetic, you can always opt for the jacket version. It has all the same features, plus sleeves. It’s a personal preference, but whichever side you’re on, you can’t make the wrong choice with Smartwool.

Best Merino Wool Running Vest

Giesswein Stan Vest

85% Merino wool, 15% Polyamide | Light-to-midweight | Regular Fit | 4 colors | Price: $159

Giesswein Stan Merino Wool Running Vest Green

Pros: Lightweight performance | Minimalist design | Reflective features

Cons: Not the most versatile | Not the warmest

If you’re a cold-weather runner, a vest really comes in handy. It should keep your core warm yet still breathe to prevent any moisture build-up. Yes, running vests are made with all sorts of materials, yet most can’t match the powers of Merino wool. Not only is it lightweight, warm, and breathable, but something about it feels right. And getting in an early winter jog with this Giesswein Stan Vest feels right.

If you’re familiar with Giesswein, you’ll understand that they design every piece until the last detail. These little design features set the Stan vest apart from the rest. The collar stands still, so you aren’t bogged down by any neckwear on your runs (although I still use a Merino wool buff in freezing conditions). Moreover, the spiral reverse zipper is top-quality, so you won’t have to adjust mid-workout. Giesswein added a few reflective marks on the neck and chest for safety.

Overall, the minimalist design is just the right amount of nothing to keep you performing at your best throughout the winter months. It’s so insulative yet breathable that it shouldn’t stink even after a few long runs. So, whether you’re training for a personal best or simply relieving some stress, outlast the rest by getting dressed in this Stan vest. Okay, dumb rhyming aside, this thing is legit, so give it a peek when you get the chance.

Best Merino Wool Hiking Vest

Black Diamond First Light Hybrid Vest

Blended Merino wool (lining) | Heavyweight (300 gsm lining + insulation + shell) | Slim fit | 4 colors | Price: $$$

Black Diamond Hybrid Vest Green

Pros: Warmth without bulk | Highly engineered fabrics | Perfect for alpine activities

Cons: Some sizing discrepancies | Hardware durability

So, I’m really into ultralight backpacking. If you don’t know what that is, it’s carrying less than 8 lbs of gear or less (not including consumables) while hiking about a marathon daily. Sounds crazy, I know, but the idea is the less weight you carry, the further you go. And, without the luxuries of modern society, you feel a closer connection with nature. Anyways, long story short (this isn’t an essay-long recipe, for gosh sake), whenever I’m out on the trail, I always like to have this First Light vest handy.

The reason is that it only weighs 11-oz. I know some puffer vests weigh a few ounces less, but there’s something about this vest that’s much more functional (for me, at least). Perhaps it’s the insane amount of technology that goes into a sub-pound vest. Don’t believe me? Black Diamond utilizes Schoeller® stretch-woven shell fabric with NanoSphere® Technology that quickly sheds oil, dirt, and water. Moreover, this vest has migration-resistant PrimaLoft® Silver Insulation for added warmth.

So, you’re probably asking: “with all these registered trademarks, where is the Merino wool?” Well, it’s in the body & lining, of course. The 300-gsm blended Merino wool body may not be the star of the show, but it does play an essential role in the temperature regulation process.

I highly recommend the Black Diamond First Light Vest for all outdoor activities. And if you’re planning a late spring hike, consider packing this instead of the traditional puffer. You won’t be disappointed!

Best Men’s Merino Wool Vest For Travel

Minus33 Wilderness Expedition Vest

100% Merino wool | Heavyweight (380 gsm) | Regular fit | 3 colors | Price: $$

Simple black Merino Wool Vest From Minus33

Pros: Offset shoulder seams | Double-layer Ponti knit | Packs small

Cons: No chest pocket | Torso length may feel long for some

If you like to live life on the go, hopping from city to city, it can be challenging to pack the right gear. For one, you want something that can hold up to the elements, but you also want to avoid lugging around an oversized coat. The perfect in-between layer is a vest, and in our opinion, the best vest for travel is the Minus33 Wilderness Expedition vest.

You may think: “um, this is supposed to be an outdoor vest, not a travel vest.” And you’d be technically correct. However, the same properties that make it a great outdoor vest – warmth-to-weight, versatility, comfort, fit, packability, etc. – also make it a carry-on essential. The only thing we’d change would be to add an extra chest pocket. So, if you work for Minus33, we’d love to see this additional feature next season.

The fabric and design are the two things we love most about this vest. The double-layered Ponte De Roma material is warm and durable with plenty of stretchiness. And since it has a minimalist design and standard fit, this vest becomes super versatile on the road. Although, the length can feel long at times, especially if you’re wearing a shorter overlayer.

Finally, if we compare this vest to many others on the list, it’s definitely affordable. So, you can use the savings to get the whole AirBnB to yourself rather than bunking with some randos. Just remember to pack your Wilderness Expedition vest before you depart!

Best Merino Wool Puffer Vest

Ibex Wool Aire Vest

80% Merino wool insulation (100% Nylon shell) | Lightweight | Athletic fit | 3 colors | Price: $$$$

Ibex Merino Wool Puffer Vesr Blue And Orange

Pros: Warmth without weight or bulk | Functional weather-resistance | Machine washable

Cons: Outdoor style may not work with daily wear | Fabric may wrinkle

Merino wool fabric has a smooth next-to-skin feel and excellent temperature regulation properties, making it a superb vest material. Still, when the weather is wet and cold, you’ll need something more weather-resistant. In those cases, you may think: “Merino wool isn’t going to cut it.” Well, that’s not the case. Not only does Merino wool make excellent fabric, but it also works as insulation. So, you get the warmth from the wool (instead of down or synthetic) and the weather resistance of the lining and shell. Long story short, you get a Merino wool puffer vest, and our favorite one is the Ibex Wool Aire Vest.

Modeled after their popular Aire Hoody, this lightweight vest (~10 oz. for a medium) truly punches above its weight. The 20-denier Nylon shell is wind and water-resistant, while the 70-80 gram Merino wool fill provides enough loft to trap warm air. In other words, these materials work together to keep the cold air out and your body heat in.

In terms of style, this vest is basic, but in a good way. Some of the color patterns have that Pacific Northwest, outdoor-wear vibe, yet it only looks out of place in day-to-day life as the nylon fabric sometimes wrinkles. We think of it as a four-season layer for the backcountry and more of a packable emergency layer in daily life. So, if that’s what you’re after, check the Wool Air Vest out below or read more about Ibex’s wide range of Merino wool gear!

Best Merino Wool Golf Vest

Fairway & Greene Baruffa Merino ¼ Zip Windvest

100% Italian Merino exterior (Polyester lining) | Regular fit | 7 colors | Price: $$$$

Blue Merino Wool Golf Vest From Fairway And Greene

Pros: Windproof construction | High-quality materials | Bigger sizes available

Cons: Dry clean only | Limited versatility

Golfing and hiking aren’t all that different; you’re outside for hours walking through the woods with heavy equipment on your back. So, it shouldn’t be surprising that Merino wool has made its way onto the course. And in terms of Merino wool vests specifically designed for golf, the Baruffa ¼ Zip from Fairway & Greene sits atop the leaderboard.

This vest has a unique nylon lining, which, combined with the Merino wool exterior, makes it windproof. And, since Merino wool still maintains its insulative properties when wet, you won’t have to worry if you get some drizzle on the back nine. Although, due to these weather-proofing features, you can only clean it at the dry cleaners. Plus, it could be more versatile off the course. You can wear it running errands or to a casual dinner, but for anything more formal, you’ll look like the dude whose most proper attire is his golf attire. And no one likes that guy.

Some people prefer Fairway & Greene’s long-sleeve version of the Baruffa, yet I like the vest more as the extra bulkiness can sometimes throw off my swing. It’s an excellent midlayer for early-season scrambles and late-season league play. Sure, it may not improve your handicap, but at least you’ll look good (and feel great) next time you slice the ball into the woods.

Best Men’s Merino Wool Sweater Vest

WoolOvers Cashmere And Merino Vest

80% Merino, 20% Cashmere | Midweight | Regular fit | 15 colors | Price: $$

WoolOvers Merino Cashmere Sweater Vest Gray

Pros: Minimalist design | Excellent color choices | Cashmere adds extra softness

Cons: Questionable longevity | Not as warm as traditional knits

As you’ve probably realized by now, Merino wool’s versatility is unmatched. However, a classic sweater vest may not need all these extra bells and whistles. Instead, you want a timeless design that works fashionably with all your formalwear. And that’s where this WoolOvers Cashmere and Merino vest comes into play.

Honestly, this vest is precisely what you would picture a sweater vest to be. The pullover design, ribbed trim, and regular fit add a touch of elegant simplicity to any formalwear. Plus, there are fifteen color options to choose from, and they aren’t just any colorsWoolOvers offers basic neutral tones but adds a bit of style with shades like woodland green, dark turmeric, moonlight ocean, and more!

One thing to note is that this vest is not as thick as you may expect. While we classify the fabric as midweight, it’s one of the lightest pieces on this list. So, if you’re in the market for something warmer but still dig the style, check out WoolOvers Classic Lambswool Vest. It is slightly heavier, with more bulk, but may not work well with tight-fitting outer layers.

Overall, this v-neck Merino wool sweater vest will make a great addition to your office wear rotation. The wool offers moderate warmth and is blended with 20% cashmere for an even more luxurious feel. Although, with such delicate fabrics, you must use proper washing techniques to prolong the wear life.

Best Merino Wool Vest For Winter

Duckworth WoolCloud Vest

80% Merino interior (Nylon shell + lining) | Heavyweight | Relaxed fit | 4 colors | Price: $$$$

Duckworth WoolCloud Vest Tan

Pros: Holds up well in sub-zero weather | Snap-button front | 100% USA-sourced wool

Cons: No chest pocket | Limited availability

Alright, we know that all of the vests we’ve covered may classify as “cold-weather gear.” However, when the temperatures drop below freezing, many of these vests work only as a midlayer. So, in terms of cold-weather Merino wool vests that work as an outer layer, the Duckworth Wool Cloud Vest shines in a class of its own.

As with much of Duckworth’s clothing, the attention is in the details. They know you’ll be wearing it in wet, wintery conditions, so they use a water-resistant nylon shell and snap-buttoning for easy wear. But the weather protection continues beyond there. Unlike puffer vests stuffed with goose down, Merino wool insulation stays warm while wet. It’s just one of those unique properties of wool that is priceless.

Although, some minor details could be tweaked. For one, we would love a chest pocket for extra storage. Moreover, the two handwarmer pockets aren’t necessarily baffled, so you don’t get the same insulation level as the rest of the vest. It’s not a significant issue by any means; however, there is always room for improvement!

Still, the best part of the Wool Cloud vest, by far, is the wool! Duckworth sources all their wool from Rambouillet Merino sheep in Montana, which is hardier than some Australian Merino. And by shortening the supply chain, the wool becomes even more sustainable. On top of that, this vest’s solid insulation is made from noils (scraps from the production process) which would otherwise be discarded. In the end, the Wool Cloud vest is one of the most rugged, comfortable, and eco-friendly vests out there!

Best Overall Women’s Merino Wool Sweater

Icebreaker Waypoint Crew

100% Merino wool | Midweight | Regular fit | 3 colors | Price: $$$$

Icebreaker Womens Waypoint Merino Wool Sweater Blue

Pros: Roomy yet cozy | Excellent warmth-to-weight ratio | Neckline lays flat

Cons: Length may be too long for some | Pilling to be expected

You may know Icebreaker from its wide selection of outdoor apparel. However, they make more than just gear for the backcountry. With their expert Merino wool knowledge, they’ve created a simple, elegant piece in this Waypoint Crew. This idea of ‘the right amount of nothing’ is why I have it as my top Merino wool sweater.

Like all Icebreaker’s gear, this Waypoint sweater uses high-quality Merino wool for a soft, luxurious feel. The midweight knitted fabric keeps you toasty with or without an underlayer. Plus, in the chilly winter months, you can throw a Merino wool puffer on top for extra warmth.

My Waypoint sweater fits pretty standard; it’s not too snug or relaxed, but there is plenty of room to move. In addition, the design is simple and flattering. The ribbed cuffs and neckline add to the overall style while increasing warmth. The one I have is a solid navy, but as I’m writing this, only the striped pattern is available. If you’re looking for solid colors only, check back throughout the year, as Icebreaker often releases new variations seasonally. Or, you can browse any of their other women’s sweaters.

Finally, I’d like to say that this is not necessarily the best women’s Merino wool sweater. Since everyone has different vibes, climates, and lifestyles, it’s challenging to rank one sweater as the best. The Icebreaker Waypoint Crew is the one I like the most, and I think you’ll like it too!

Best Everyday Merino Wool Sweater

Wool& Landmark Cardigan

78% Merino / 22% Nylon | Lightweight | Relaxed fit | 3 colors | Price: $$$$

Wool And Landmark Merino Wool Cardigan

Pros: Deep patch pockets | Year-round use | Fits all body types

Cons: Sleeves may be a bit short for taller people | Not a lot of colors

I absolutely love a good cardigan. It’s just that piece of my wardrobe that I can always return to after a long day at work. And, whenever I have a packed schedule, I know my Wool& Landmark Cardigan is waiting for me at the end of the day.

I could go on all day about how the 17.5-micron fabric feels silky smooth or hugs my curves, but there is another reason I love the Landmark: the pockets! I can easily carry my phone and keys, but anything heavier weighs down the drape too much. Still, there is plenty of room, and the low-profile stitching blends the pocket into the overall style of the cardigan. So, they don’t look like an add-on but rather part of the entire garment design.

The fabric itself feels soft and cozy to the touch. It’s a lightweight Merino blend, so it does look thin (nearly translucent). However, since Merino wool is an excellent temperature regulator, you still get a warm, intimate experience no matter the time of year. Although, it’s better to opt for a more heavyweight Merino wool cardigan in freezing conditions.

To sum up, the Landmark cardigan is my go-to everyday sweater. I love it and can’t wait until Wool& releases more colors! Check out what they have in stock below.

Best Value Merino Wool Sweater

Ridge Merino Mixed Stitch Crew Neck

98% Merino, 2% Spandex | Lightweight | Relaxed fit | 4 colors | Price: $$

Ridge Merino Womens Mixed Stich Crew Neck Sweater in White

Pros: Stylish everyday sweater | Ribbed center design | Excellent price-to-quality ratio

Cons: Not for formal attire | May not fit all body types

As you read, you may notice that many of these sweaters are expensive. The high price tag is actually one of the disadvantages of Merino wool. However, some less costly options are still of the highest quality. One of those options is the Ridge Merino Mixed Stitch crew neck sweater. And as you’ll soon find out, it isn’t just valuable because of the price.

One of the cool things about this shirt is that it’s knitted to shape, which reduces scraps and waste material. And since the tiny bit of Spandex in the fabric adds stretch and recovery, the actual shape will last longer than pure wool sweaters. This increased “wear life,” combined with sustainable knitting practices, make this sweater one of the most valuable for the environment.

In terms of style, it is more casual and comfy, making it excellent for everyday wear. The relaxed construction drapes nicely across the shoulders, and the dropped arm holes add to the roomy yet cozy fit. Plus, the vertical ribbing adds to this sweater’s unique style.

Overall, this Mixed Stitch sweater is high-quality, comfortable, and affordable. And if you need something to pair it with, you can check out the rest of Ridge Merino’s lifestyle collection!

Best Merino Wool 1/4 Zip Sweater

We Norwegians Trysil Quarter Zip

90% Merino, 10% cashmere | Heavyweight | Relaxed fit | 2 colors | Price: $$$$$

Navy blue womens Merino wool quarter zip sweater

Pros: High-quality material | Classic style | Works with or without an underlayer

Cons: Limited color selection | Rather expensive

If you imagine a sweater embodying the word “snuggly,” you would probably imagine this Trysil Quarter Zip. The chunky, heavyweight yarn is knitted in a unique, classy, and functional pattern. The extra cable knit, in combination with Merino wool’s natural properties, create a cozy, comfortable microclimate. Plus, if it’s too toasty, you can adjust the zipper for extra airflow.

The reason this sweater will make you feel as snug as a bug in a rug is the luxurious fabric. 90% of the yarn is soft Merino wool, while the other 10% is cashmere, which is even smoother. So, not only will you be warm, but it will feel amazing on your skin.

Although, since the wool-cashmere yarn is so soft, it is rather delicate. Due to this, you can’t soak or put it in the washer; it’s handwash only. Moreover, you may have to reshape the sweater when wet to avoid shrinkage (We Norwegians mention that it may shrink up to 5%). We know we make it sound like a hassle to care for, but once you get the hang of the process, it becomes a part of your laundry routine.

Anyways, if you’re willing to spend extra maintenance time, the We Norwegians Trysil Quarter Zip is a top-notch choice. For now, it comes in two color options, blue and white, but keep an eye out for new releases throughout the year.

Best Casual Merino Wool Sweater

Woolx Bailey Sweatershirt

52% Merino, 43% Polyester, 5% spandex | Midweight | Loose fit | 4 colors | Price: $$$

Woolx Bailey Crewneck Merino Wool Sweatshirt White

Pros: Comfy & cozy feel | Loose design offers room to move | Long fabric life

Cons: May be too baggy some | Sizing inconsistencies

This may not look like your typical sweater, but that’s because it isn’t! The Woolx Bailey Sweatshirt is precisely that, a sweatshirt. However, its soft fabric and stylish design meet, if not exceed, many of the knitted sweaters on this list. So, we’d be doing you a disservice by not including it.

Anyways, the reason we love this sweatshirt so much is the fabric design. The interior is soft, Woolmark-certified Merino, which feels smooth against the skin. On the flip side, the exterior is recycled polyester, which is more durable than wool. It is less resistant to tears, snags, pills, and laundry mishaps. Moreover, both of these materials are sustainable! Now that’s what we call fabric engineering.

In terms of fit, this sweatshirt is super relaxed. There is plenty of room to move, both in the sleeves and torso. It drapes nicely without bunching, although it is slightly oversized. One buyer even said it “felt like a tent.” That’s obviously an exaggeration. However, the underlying point remains. Check out the sizing charts before buying if you have concerns about the fit.

Overall, this sweatshirt-sweater hybrid is an excellent house shirt that could also be worn to a casual gathering. As with many of Woolx’s products, the comfort level is the crème de la crème. It would be hard to get much cozier.

Best Merino Wool Turtleneck Sweater

The Knotty Ones Pasaka Turtleneck

100% Merino wool | Heavyweight | Regular fit | 2 colors | Price: $$$$$

Green Womens Merino Wool Turtleneck Sweater

Pros: Beautiful Nordic design | Warm, cozy feel | Fits most body types

Cons: Delicate fabric | Expensive

Fashion meet function; that’s the power of Merino wool. And the Pasaka Merino wool turtleneck is the epitome of this motto. Designed in part by Lithuanian supermodel Giedrė Dukauskaitė, this turtleneck sweater is a high-quality piece that makes a great addition to any wardrobe.

The knit pattern looks like something out of a fairytale, and that’s on purpose. Pasaka literally means fairytale in Lithuanian. According to the description, it represents “luck, strength, the past and the future.” It has notes of traditional Nordic sweaters but with a bit of Baltic flavor.

Still, the waist-level hem length is the only design feature that could use tweaking. While the high-rise looks good from a style point of view, it doesn’t provide any rear coverage. And while this may seem like a triviality, if your butt gets cold (like mine), you may want to look for something longer.

Finally, it’s no secret that this sweater is expensive. And while it may not be within your budget, we wholeheartedly believe it’s priced correctly. So, if you’ve got some wiggle room in your bank account, give the Pasake Merino Wool Turtleneck a try.

Best Women’s Merino Wool Cardigan

Wilfred Belize Cardigan

100% Merino wool (some elastane in trim) | Lightweight | Relaxed fit | 8 colors | Price: $$$$

Artizia Belted Merino Wool Cardigan Dark Gray

Pros: Lightweight yet warm | Functional side cut | Removable belt

Cons: Some sizing discrepancies | Handwash only

We’ve been looking for a long duster Merino wool for quite some time. Something elegant yet cozy that can be worn with or without a belt. We are happy to announce that we’ve found one that meets all our criteria: the 100% Merino wool Wilfred Belize Cardigan.

Unlike some of the heavier sweaters on this list, this cardigan is lightweight yet warm. The seams are flat and smooth, leaving you with total comfort (even if worn with a sleeveless crop top). In short, it’s beautifully constructed.

The cut is straight and narrow, but the dropped shoulders and side slits give it more of a relaxed feel. In colder weather, you can wear this cardigan as a top layering piece, as the sleeves are wide enough to fit a long sleeve underlayer. It even can be styled with a light dress or mini skirt for more moderate temperatures.

While this cardigan comes with two patch front pockets, they are more for your hands than your phone or keys. That’s because the fabric is prone to snags and tears. Since it is so delicate, we recommend handwashing only. Use detergents formulated for knitwear and dry flat to avoid any stretching or sagging. But even with the necessary extra care, this Belize cardigan is worth it.

Best Classic Merino Wool Sweater

Pendleton Westerly Cardigan

100% Lambswool | Heavyweight | Relaxed fit | 3 colors | Price: $$$$$$

Pros: Unique pattern design | Double-sided zipper | Petite & plus sizes available

Cons: Dry clean only | Expensive

For all you buy-it-for-lifers, the Pendleton Westerly cardigan has a cozy, classic style that will last you for years. Don’t believe us? Pendleton released this exact sweater over 50 years ago (1972, to be precise), and it is still one of the most popular wool sweaters on the market.

So, why has this cardigan withstood the test of time? Besides the high-quality craftsmanship and functional features (which we’ll cover shortly), it’s still popular due to the cult classic, The Big Lebowski. Yup, Jeff Bridges rocked it on screen as “The Dude.” Although, the “dudette” version isn’t exactly the same as the men’s style as the length is slightly longer, and the cut is more favorable for feminine body shapes.

Despite these minor tweaks, this cardigan remains true to the original design. There are two functional front pockets and a classic two-way zipper. And, since it’s made of imported Lambswool, you know it will be super warm. The only downside is that you can’t put it in the washer (dry cleaning only).

Finally, we love the Westerly cardigan’s craftsmanship. We wouldn’t expect anything less from Pendleton, as they’ve been creating quality wool clothing for over half a century. Still, if you don’t want a bunch of guys quoting “The Dude” around you, you may want to get a color other than the tan one from the movie

Best Merino Wool Sweater Vest

Kalvos Merino Wool Vest

100% Merino wool | Midweight | Regular fit | 2 colors | Price: $$$$

Kavlos Womens Merino Wool Vest Multicolor

Pros: Excellent layering | Sophisticated style | Unique design

Cons: Style may not be for everyone | Minimal color selection

Another Lithuanian-inspired piece of Merino Wool Gear, the Kavlos vest is a unique garment whose design allows for different styles and uses. The back hem hangs lower than the front, adding extra warmth to your backside. Moreover, you can cinch the side ties with metal buckles for a tighter, cozier fit. These simple design features, in combination with the soft Merino wool, make this sweater vest the queen of versatility.

This Kavlos vest designer, Viltė Savickaitė, mixes modern fashion with the old Baltic world. The original beige design portrays the scenic rolling hills of Lithuania, while the fabric comes from her years of studying in Australia (where 80% of the world’s Merino wool originates). The contemporary and classic styles make this knitted Merino wool vest a unique, timeless piece.

While we love the style – we must admit – it’s not for everyone. I get an awesome urban chic vibe from this vest, which is great if you live in a big city. However, it may not fit into your wardrobe if you’re more outdoorsy. Also, the material is delicate, so you must dry clean it. Although this vest’s style is so classic and versatile, it should last for years with proper care.

Best Merino Wool Poncho Sweater

Smartwool Edgewood Poncho

55% Polyester, 30% Merino, 15% Nylon | Lightweight | Regular fit | 7 colors | Price: $$$

Smartwool Womens Edgewood Merino Wool Poncho Sweater Olive Green

Pros: Comfortable flowy design | Pairs well with leggings | Great for covering body imperfections

Cons: Longterm durability concerns | Some pilling to be expected

You may know Smartwool from their wide selection of Merino wool socks and hiking gear. Overall, they are one of our favorite outdoor brands, but that’s not all they do. Smartwool offers a few collections of lifestyle clothing with the same performance as their outdoor apparel. And this Edgewood Poncho exemplifies this expert mixture of comfort, performance, and style.

Unlike other poncho sweaters, this one has sleeves, which is a significant plus. The dropped shoulders and cowl neck still give it that classic poncho feel. Moreover, the draped fit and ample rear coverage make this sweater more versatile than options without sleeves. It works great with jeans or with any pair of leggings.

Yet, with all Smartwool gear, we love the material the most. It’s a durable blend of responsibly-sourced Merino wool, recycled polyester, and nylon. The addition of synthetic fibers helps to strengthen the fabric, meaning it should last for many years, and you shouldn’t be worried about it when you throw it in the washer. Sure, you may experience some pilling, but that doesn’t affect the integrity of the material.

Finally, since this sweater is meant to be a relaxed fit, you should consult the size charts before ordering. Some users have noticed that if they order true-to-size, the drape is tighter than they would hope. So, if you want this Merino wool poncho sweater to be more free-flowing, it’s best to order a size up.

Best Merino Wool Cable Knit Sweater

SAOL Cable Knit Sweater

100% Merino wool | Heavyweight | Slim fit | 4 colors | Price: $$$

Pros: Side pockets & button details | Warm, edgy cardigan | Elegant color palette

Cons: Initial itching possible | Sizing discrepancies

Comfort and coziness are all wrapped up in one piece; that’s how we think of this 100% Irish Merino wool cardigan from SAOL. This sweater’s classic honeycomb and diamond patterns add extra depth to your wardrobe but also function to keep you warm. The raised stitching allows body heat to flow freely throughout the garment while also insulating you against the cold winter air.

Moreover, this timeless, cable-knit style only ages like a fine wine. The twisted, oversized collar pairs well with a morning cup of coffee and the tailored fit. Even the pockets pair well with an on-the-go lifestyle. This mix of fashion and functionality makes this Merino wool cable knit sweater a vintage buy.

Our only real qualm is that the yarn feels coarser than other Merino wool sweaters. Some of this may be due to the knitting techniques, but since it’s relatively affordable, it explains why the fibers are thicker. Some users did report some initial itchiness. This does not mean the garment is poor quality or that you are allergic to wool (which you aren’t). If you are worried about this, wear something underneath. However, we haven’t had any issues, but that may be because we wear wool, like, all the time.

This SAOL Merino wool sweater is an excellent choice for autumn, winter, and early spring. Just think of the climate of West Ireland. Chilly, windy, and wet. The Irish Merino sheep grow wool to withstand these conditions, and those same protective properties are transferred to your sweater. Now that’s pretty cool.

Best Women’s Merino Wool Ski Sweater

Dale of Norway Geilo

100% Merino wool | Midweight | Slim fit | 4 colors | Price: $$$$$

Pros: Perfect for a winter activewear style | Great color variety | Exceptionally soft material

Cons: Sleeves may be long for some | Comparatively expensive

Named after a ski resort in Southern Norway, the Geilo sweater makes an excellent addition to any ski outfit. The slim fit, midweight fabric, and temperature-regulation properties of wool make this an ideal layering piece for out on the slopes. Moreover, the chic Nordic design allows you to wear it as a standalone piece when you’re done skiing for the day.

And this style is why we love the Dale of Norway Geilo sweater so much. It has that après-ski (French for after ski) vibe, which is perfect for sipping chocolate after a cold day carving powder. The classic Nordic pattern and vibrant color selections make this sweater stand apart from the rest.

Although, the “skin soft Merino wool” is only 20.5 microns. In our experience, that’s one the coarser end of the fiber diameter spectrum. Don’t get us wrong, it still feels soft to the touch, but it’s not the silkiest feel. And the reason Dale of Norway uses a thicker fiber is most likely for improved durability and warmth.

Overall, the Geilo sweater embraces the coziness and functionality Norway is famous for. It’s a solid, functional, and downright fashionable layering piece. And while it’s on the pricier side, the performance you get is worth it. Yet, if you plan on sticking to the bunny slopes, you may want to opt for something more inexpensive.

Best Women’s Merino Wool Travel Sweater

Fjallraven Ovik Knit Sweater

100% Merino wool | Heavyweight | Slim fit | 5 colors | Price: $$$$

Fjallraven Ovik Merino Wool Sweater Navy

Pros: Our favorite “ugly sweater” | Reinforced elbows | Unique design options

Cons: Cut not for all | Initial itchiness may occur

Travel clothes are often neutral, matchable colors, so you can pack less. However, you can still add some style to your wardrobe even if you’re out on the road. With the Fjallraven Ovik Knit sweater, you get the versatility and comfort of travel clothing without sacrificing your personal style.

The number one reason we love this sweater for travel is that it performs as a perfect midlayer. The classic pattern and Jacquard knit function as a fashionable overlayer for mild days. And, when the weather gets chillier, it’s not too bulky to wear under a heavy coat. Moreover, the ribbed cuffs and hem seal out any cold drafts, so you’ll stay toasty no matter what you wear it with.

The second reason we love this travel sweater so much is the attention to detail. You get excellent arm mobility, as Raglan seams sit in front of your shoulders rather than on top of them. Also, the elbows are reinforced, which may not seem like a big deal. However, I’ve had plenty of wool sweaters that have worn through the elbows over time. Knowing that this sweater has elbow reinforcements makes me think it will last a long time (with the proper care, of course!)

To sum up, if you like to live on the go and prefer traveling in cooler climates, this Fjallrven Ovik Knit sweater should work for your lifestyle. It’s a versatile, stylish layer that I love having as part of my suitcase. I hope the rest of my one-baggers agree!

Men’s Merino Wool Sweater Buying Considerations

Before diving into our favorite men’s Merino wool sweaters, we want to ensure you have all the information you need. So, we’ve put together some buying criteria that you should look out for when scanning each sweater.

Remember that each consideration is based on your personal preference. So, please don’t get too stuck on the numbers themselves. And if you still have questions, reach out to us!

Wool Composition

As Merino wool lovers, we love classifying gear based on its wool percentage. And we hate to say it, but more wool does not always mean better. For example, 100% Merino wool sweaters may be softer, but less durable. On the other hand, a wool-synthetic bland may be easier to care for and retain its shape longer.

Overall, wool composition plays a role in a sweater’s warmth, next-to-skin feel, durability, fit, and care. Since these are mainly based on personal preference, you should understand how the Merino wool percentage plays a role in each. Click below if you’re interested in learning more.

Learn More About Wool Composition

Warmth & Feel

We like to think that the more Merino, the warmer the sweater. While fabric weight is more of a defining factor for warmth, Merino wool composition still plays a minor role due to its moisture management properties.

Also, Merino is finer than traditional wool, so it shouldn’t itch or scratch against your skin. So, as a rule of thumb, go pure Merino if you’re looking for pure coziness.

Durability

100% Merino wool sweaters are often delicate and prone to snagging or tearing. So, if you want something a little more heavy-duty, look for sweaters blended with synthetic material for added strength. Also, heavyweight fabrics tend to last longer than lighter ones.

Fit & Care

As you may know, Merino wool sweaters are often challenging to care for. Some are “dry-clean only,” while others have specific laundry instructions (that you should always follow).

Regarding wool composition, higher ones typically require more detailed care instructions. However, this varies on a sweater-to-sweater basis.

Fabric Weight

Unlike how we classify some of our other favorite Merino Wool gear – like base layers – it’s hard to judge the exact thickness of knitwear. Based on the table below and our experience with Merino wool, we’ve developed a Merino wool sweater weight classification system.

Fabric Weight Comparison Chart for Merino Wool Sweaters

Now, this is no exact science, as we aren’t comparing apples to apples. But it should give you a better idea of how thick & warm each sweater may be. And if you want to know more about how we came up with these numbers, continue reading below.

Learn more about Fabric Weight

Fabric Weight (gsm)

Although we typically classify jersey fabrics in grams per square centimeter (gsm), for Merino wool sweaters, it is challenging to rank them based on the knit style. Yet as a comparative measure, it’s still important to quantify.

Knit Gauge

The knit gauge is determined by the number of stitches per inch. While the overall number is helpful to understand, it doesn’t give the complete picture, as factors like needle size, tension, and yarn weight play a role.

You can expect a heavier, puffier Merino wool sweater with lower knit gauges. On the flip side, higher knit gauges provide a smoother, lighter garment.

Comfort Lower Limit

For other types of Merino wool gear, we like to provide an upper and lower temperature range based on activity level. However, since you’re probably wearing your sweater during more sedentary activities, only offering a lower limit is better.

These comfort limits are based on years of experience in the Merino wool industry, as well as some other expert analysis.

Style & Fit

Pullovers, cardigans, turtlenecks, oh my!

Finding the right sweater style to match your style can take time and effort. Should I go with zippers or buttons? V-neck or crew? Ribbed cuffs or none? And honestly, we can’t give you a straight answer.

Luckily, many of these sweaters have “brothers.” In other words, one factor, like the neckline or closure type, may be altered, but everything else between them is the same. So, if you are being nitpicky, still make sure to check out the complete collection.

In terms of fit, we denote it in three classes: slim, standard, and relaxed. A slim fit may be your best choice if you are looking for a standalone sweater. Yet if you are looking at something to layer overtop, consider a relaxed fit for more room.

True Price

One of the disadvantages of Merino wool is that it’s expensive. You know this, and we know this. It’s not a shocker to anyone. While we provide some value options, most Merino wool sweaters will cost you a pretty penny. However, in our experience, the price tag isn’t the only “True Price” factor to consider.

Other factors like longevity and usage play a significant role. So, be sure to understand how often and for how long you plan on wearing your sweater when checking out the price.

Who knows? You may even find an heirloom piece you can pass on for generations. I mean, everybody loves the dad with the cool sweaters.

Best Overall Merino Wool Sweater For Men

Unbound Merino Heritage Knit Sweater

100% Merino wool | Heavyweight | Relaxed fit | 5 Colors | Price: $$$

Unbound Merino Men's Merino Wool Sweater Light Blue

Pros: Cozy, luxurious feel | Timeless style | Sustainably sourced

Cons: Not as heavy as you may expect | Limited size availability

If you’ve read our reviews before, you’ll know that we are huge fans of Unbound Merino. They design their clothing to withstand the rigors and discomfort of travel. And, with a classic style and comfortable feel, their Heritage Knit sweater is our favorite Merino wool men’s sweater.

What we love most about this Merino wool sweater is the wool itself. It has a soft and luxurious next-to-skin feel without any itch. That’s because Unbound Merino uses 100% extra fine Italian Merino wool sourced from the best growers. In fact, the yarn they use is certified by several outside agencies as being sustainable for the environment and ethical for the sheep. And when sheep are happy, they produce better quality wool!

As for the sweater thickness, we classify it as heavyweight due to the 10-gauge knit, but it’s lighter than you would expect. Yet, due to Merino’s natural loft and thermal regulation properties, you still get the warmth of a heavyweight sweater without the added bulk.

Since the Unbound Merino Heritage Knit sweater is so popular, there is often limited size and color availability. So, if you like it, you should get one before they sell out. Or, grab a bundle of two instead to save a little money!

Editor’s Pick: Sweater

Smartwool Sparwood Crew Sweater

30% Merino (70% Polyester/Nylon) | Lightweight | Regular fit | 7 colors | Price: $$

Smarwool Sparwood Sweater Various Colors

Pros: Good price-to-quality ratio | Breathable yet warm | Vibrant color selection

Cons: Not as soft as other sweaters | Pilling to be expected

You may know Smartwool from their selection of high-performing socks and outdoor wear. However, they don’t just offer clothes for hiker fashion week. Their Sparwood Crew Sweater is my pick because of its style and, best of all, affordability.

In terms of style, this Merino wool sweater has a casual vibe. There’s nothing too flashy or upscale, just a good sweater that pairs well with jeans, khakis, or chinos. The ribbed hem and cuffs provide the classic sweater look and add some warmth. Plus, the lightweight single-knit jersey is breathable. I’d consider it only a three-season sweater, so you may want to look for something heavier for winter.

When it comes to the price, you honestly can’t get much better at this level of quality. Smartwool does an excellent job blending synthetics for added strength without losing Merino wool’s desirable properties. And while this 2:1 synthetic-wool blend isn’t as soft as some of the other sweaters we’ll mention, it still gets the job done. Moreover, the synthetics help retain the shape longer, even if you experience some pilling after the first wash.

Overall, I really dig this Sparwood sweater. It comes in vibrant, unique colors like purples, reds, and oranges, which fit my personal style nicely. So as the editor, I’m giving it my stamp of approval (not like it really means anything, anyway)!

Editor’s Pick: Cardigan

Pendleton Original Westerly Sweater

100% Lambswool | Mid-to-heavyweight | Relaxed fit | 3 colors | Price: $$$$

Pros: Iconic style | High-quality craftsmanship | Zipper improves versatility

Cons: Dry clean only | Relatively expensive

I wouldn’t consider myself a massive fan of The Big Lebowski (although I have been to this Lebowski Bar in Iceland). Still, it doesn’t take a big fan to recognize this iconic Pendleton Westerly sweater from the movie. And while it’s made of Lambswool, not Merino, the dude still abides.

Apart from this zip-up cardigan’s place in Hollywood folklore, it’s a darn comfy and stylish piece. And that’s just not me saying it. Celebrities like Jon Hamm and Aaron Rodgers have all been spotted rocking The Dude’s sweater. Something about it just really ties their outfits together.

The only downside to this sweater (other than the price) is that it’s dry cleaned only. For some of you, that might not be an issue. But I tend to be messy, so I’m careful to wear mine if there are any beverages around.

Finally, I know what you’re thinking: “Did this guy add this sweater to quote The Big Lebowski?” Wow, just take it easy, man! This wool sweater is legit, not just a replica of a movie prop. Pendleton is a name you can trust in the world of wool. And if The Dude abides, you should too!

Best Everyday Merino Wool Sweater

Helly Hansen Carv Knitted Sweater

65% Merino / 35% Polyamide | Lightweight | Slim fit | 3 colors | Price: $$$

Helly Hansen Merino Wool Sweater Navy

Pros: Après-Ski style & fit | Lightweight yet durable | Added comfort features

Cons: Not the most formal sweater | Large arm-patch logo

After a long day out on the mountain, you may gather in the lodge with friends for a few drinks. Or, head out into the town for some. Either way, you want to avoid packing an extra change of clothes. So, Helly Hansen created this Carv sweater to be worn before and after carving down the slopes. The style is called après-ski, French for “after ski.” Basically, it’s another term for call mountain casual, so we wouldn’t suggest it as a formal sweater. It was designed to be worn under your ski jacket but looks good when you’re a few beers in at the resort bar.

Although it is meant to be a ski sweater, we’ve found that it’s also our favorite everyday Merino wool sweater. This is because it’s lightweight and warm, meaning you can layer something heavier on top in the winter months. Also, the wool-synthetic blend strengthens the fabric, so it won’t be prone to snags and tears like other 100% Merino wool sweaters.

The only thing we’d really change is the large logo patch on the sleeve. But it’s not a deal breaker by any means. Anyways, if you’re looking for a stylish, comfortable sweater for daily use, the Carv knitted sweater should be one of your top choices. And, if you like the overall style but the sweater itself, check out some of these Helly Hansen wool sweaters.

Best V-Neck Merino Wool Sweater

Icebreaker Shearer V-Neck Sweater

100% Merino wool | Lightweight | Regular fit | 4 colors | Price: $$$

Icebreaker V-Neck Merino Wool Sweater Olive Green

Pros: Classic no-frills v-neck | High-quality material | Formal enough for work

Cons: Sizing may run large | Must launder with care

When it comes to Merino wool brands, Icebreaker reigns supreme. We’ve reviewed dozens of their products and genuinely have nothing but praise, and their Shearer v-neck sweater is no different.

Icebreaker’s gear typically has a casual outdoor style, but with this v-neck Merino wool sweater, you get more of a formal indoor feel. The no-frills design works well layered over a collared shirt or as a standalone piece. The fit is regular, but some users have reported that it runs large. So, consult Icebreaker’s sizing charts & FAQs if you need clarification.

And as with all Icebreaker gear, the fabric is top-notch. The 100% Merino wool construction feels cozy and warm. Moreover, the ribbed cuffs, hem, and neckline keep the sweater in place, reducing discomfort. Although it is pure wool, you’ll want to launder it carefully. You can follow Merino wool care tips to keep your sweater soft and comfortable for years to come.

Finally, if you’re not a v-neck guy, Icebreaker makes their Shearer sweater in a crew neck, too. But if you like to rock the v-neck every so often, check out the button below!

Best Men’s Merino Wool Cardigan

Backcountry Textured Cardigan Sweater

55% Merino / 45% Cotton | Mid-to-heavyweight | Relaxed fit | 1 color | Price: $$$$

Backcountry Merino wool sweater cardigan tan

Pros: Soft wool-cotton blend | Functional front pockets | Made with sustainable materials

Cons: Possible care concerns | Relatively expensive

You may know Backcountry as an outdoor gear marketplace. However, they also make several high-quality products of their own. And one of our favorites is this textured wool-cotton cardigan. It has such a good winter vibe and can be worn whether you’re in the backcountry or not!

The feature we love most about this cardigan is the material itself. The combination of Merino wool and cotton has a luxurious next-to-skin feel. Moreover, Backcountry uses sustainable materials. Both the wool and cotton in this cardigan come from recycled materials. So, it feels good on your skin and on your conscious.

In terms of style, it has a unique vibe. I mean, who else would rock a sweater with reindeer on it? And it has pockets! Sure, it may seem a little hipster-ish. But, you have to admit, it’s not the most common of sweater designs. Still, who cares when you’re super warm and cozy?

Finally, this Merino wool cardigan is new, so only one color option is available, and we can’t vouch for its long-term durability. However, knowing Backcountry as a brand, it will probably last for years with proper care. Grab yours today (before they become mainstream)!

Best Merino Wool Cable Knit Sweater

West end Knitwear Aran Merino Wool Sweater

100% Merino wool | Heavyweight | Relaxed fit | 2 colors | Price: $$

Pros: Contemporary knit design | Warm yet breathable | Relatively inexpensive

Cons: Must launder with care | May experience initial itchiness

As we mentioned before, we’re no knitting experts. Although, we do know a solid sweater when we see one. And this Merino wool Aran sweater is solid. Not only is the chunky cable-knit warm and cozy, but compared to our other sweater entries, it’s uber affordable.

The overall style of this wool cardigan is known as Aran. Aptly named after an island chain off the coast of Ireland, this wool cardigan style has been popular for centuries. And this 100% Irish Merino wool Aran jumper is a nice mix of traditional and contemporary styles without sacrificing quality. In other words, this cardigan gives you the classic professor look.

The style and quality of this sweater may make you think it’s expensive. However, it’s unusually affordable. Chunky knit sweaters like this one requires less processing. Moreover, Irish Merino sheep produce coarser wool than Australian Merino as the sheep face harsher, rainier conditions. Thus, the raw material costs less, and those savings get passed on to you!

Still, even with the lower price point, this Aran Merino wool sweater is of the utmost quality. West End Knitwear has been operating for over a half-a-century, so you know you’re getting generations of knowledge with just one sweater. And this Merino wool Aran jumper’s timeless style is a testament to their longevity and success.

Best Men’s 1/4 Zip Merino Wool Sweater

Dale of Norway Hovden Sweater

100% Merino wool | Midweight | Slim fit | 6 colors | Price: $$$$

Pros: High-quality craftsmanship | Modern Nordic pattern | Designed for winter athletes

Cons: Sizing discrepancies | A bit pricey

The Norwegians have it figured out when it comes to outdoor winter style. For centuries, Scandinavians have been knitting beautiful sweaters to withstand the dark, frigid winter months. Yet, with new fabric comes new opportunities. Traditionally, these sweaters have a similar floral-like pattern and are sourced with local Norwegian wool. And when you combine this multigenerational expertise with the power of Merino wool, you get the Dale of Norway Hovden 1/4 zip.

This cozy, stylish Hovden sweater is Dale of Norway’s lightweight version of their famous Vail sweater designed for the 2006-2007 USA Ski & Snowboard team. While the Vail sweater is made with hardier Norwegian wool, the Hovden uses a 100% Merino wool construction. Thus, you get a softer, airier feel without sacrificing warmth.

And as we mentioned, Dale of Norway’s apparel is designed for, and tested by, the best winter athletes in the world. So, you know you’ll get a high-quality sweater that can withstand most arctic conditions. Moreover, you get the coziness and contentment that the Norwegians have become so famous for. Make sure to grab one today!

Best Merino Wool Sweater Vest

Woolx Stowe Vest

80% Merino / 20% Polyamide | Heavyweight | Regular fit | 3 colors | Price: $$$

Woolx Merino wool vest olive green

Pros: Versatile style & design | Warmth without bulk | Moisture-repellent knit style

Cons: Dry clean only | More casual than formal

If you live in a moderate climate, you understand how essential a vest is to your wardrobe. It provides the added versatility you may need as the temperature changes throughout the day without having to pack a heavy jacket. And our favorite gear that provides this warmth and versatility – Merino wool or not – is the Woolx Stowe Vest.

The overall design of this vest is one of the best. It’s like Woolx thought of everything. The 340 gsm heavyweight fabric is thick and warm yet surprisingly breathable. Also, the unique bouclé knit construction allows the vest to repel moisture. On top of that, you get three zipper pockets, a stay-put collar, and a supersoft feel! What more could you ask for in a sweater vest?

The Stowe vest’s only downside is that it’s “dry clean only.” Again, not a deal breaker by any means. However, it’s essential to mention. And although we’ve been known to skirt the care instructions, you should follow them, so you don’t void Woolx’s comprehensive warranty.

Also, we get it; this is more of an outdoor vest than your traditional sweater vest. Although, it’s high-quality enough to wear in any business casual setting. When heading to the office, consider throwing it over your dress shirt. Or, if you’re still working from home, it makes a great layering piece even if you’re still in your pajamas!

Best Men’s Merino Wool Turtleneck

Minus33 Kinsman Midweight Turtleneck

100% Merino wool | Midweight | Regular fit | 2 colors | Price: $$

Minus33 Merino Wool Turtleneck Gray

Pros: Top-notch warmth-to-weight ratio | Neck doesn’t constrict | Versatile wear

Cons: Not the best standalone piece | Sizing inconsistencies

In general, I’m not the biggest fan of turtlenecks. They can feel somewhat restricting around my neck (I’d rather wear a Merino wool buff instead). However, I understand those who love rocking the turtleneck look. And in terms of Merino wool turtlenecks, the Minus33 Kinsman is king.

The one aspect that sets the Kinsman apart from other Merino wool turtlenecks is the warmth-to-weight ratio. With a thickness of only 235 gsm (midweight), you still get tons of warmth. And as I mentioned before, some turtlenecks may feel restrictive around your neck. However, Minus33 knows this and designs the Kinsman with a looser-fitting neckline and no tags. In other words, it won’t choke you!

In terms of style, I’d say the Kinsman turtleneck is more of a base layer piece to be worn under something else.

As a standalone piece, it could be better, as the seam construction makes it more casual than formal. Still, it gets the job done if you’re going for the Steve Jobs look.

Overall, if you’re in the market for a comfy, low-profile Merino wool turtleneck, the Minus33 Kinsman is your best bet. It’s not only comfortable and simple but super warm. That may be why it shares a name with one of the northeast’s coldest mountain ranges. Anyways, check this Merino wool turtleneck out for yourself!

Best Merino Wool Sweater For Travel

Proof 72-Hour Crewneck Sweater

80% Merino / 20% Nylon | Lightweight | Slim fit | 4 colors | Price: $$$

Proof 72 Hour Merino Sweater Tan

Pros: Comfy waffle knit design | Seamless construction | Easily layered

Cons: Somewhat boring color options | Shrinks with improper care

Packing light will improve your adventure, whether on a road trip or traveling overseas. The less you carry, the less to worry about, and the further you can go! So, your travel clothing should be versatile, comfortable, stylish, and odorless after wearing it for three days. And with the Proof 72-Hour Crewneck sweater, that’s what you get!

Aptly named after Merino wool’s odor-proof properties, the 72-hour sweater is excellent for weekend escapes or multi-week getaways. Not only does it pack small, but you can dress it up or down. And while some of the color options are a bit basic, they pair well with nearly any pair of pants.

While this looks like a simple waffle-knit shirt at first glance, Proof uses enhanced design techniques for the utmost comfort. It’s constructed using a particular knitting machine, creating a seamless sweater that reduces irritation. The elbows are articulated, allowing for better mobility. Moreover, the ribbed waist and cuffs add to this sweater’s insane amount of comfort.

Finally, this Merino wool sweater is just one piece in Proof’s complete 72-Hour travel collection. There are also tees, henleys, polos, in more. You could even fill your whole suitcase if you want!

Best Merino Wool Sweater For Summer

Calvin Klein Merino Sweater

100% Merino wool | Lightweight | Slim fit | 12+ colors | Price: $$

Pros: Extra-fine, breathable material | Striped & multicolor options available | Relatively inexpensive

Cons: Longevity concerns | Size & color inconsistencies

Merino wool sweaters aren’t just for the cold. Due to its unique moisture-wicking properties, wearing Merino wool gear can keep you cool during the summer (and warm when the office AC is too chilly). Still, you want to avoid being bogged down in a heavy-knit sweater if it’s sweltering outside. Instead, you’ll want a lightweight, breezy sweater. And a great option for these hot days is this Calvin Klein Merino Sweater.

While Calvin Klein isn’t the usual brand you see in these reviews, they have an extensive Merino wool collection. Moreover, since they are on the pulse of fashion, they always have many colors and styles available. For example, this crewneck sweater comes in various stripe patterns and multi-color designs. More options are released each season, too!

Where does this lightweight Merino wool sweater stand in terms of quality? Probably the middle of the pack. It does feel really soft, but the fabric is more delicate than some of the other sweaters we’ve tried. It’s more prone to snags and tears, so we question its long-term durability. But for the affordable price, you can’t beat it. And if you properly take care of it, you shouldn’t have any issues.

Best Merino Wool Sweater For Winter

Filson Crewneck Guide Sweater

100% Merino wool | Heavyweight | Regular fit | 1 color | Price: $$$$$

Filson Heavyweight Merino Wool Guide Sweater Navy

Pros: Heavy-duty knit construction | Perfect for cold & wet conditions | Trusted outdoor brand

Cons: Only for cold-weather use| Most expensive sweater on the list

This Merino wool sweater from Filson is an absolute unit. It’s hard to classify the actual thickness, but we can say it’s the warmest Merino wool sweater on this list. The heavyweight fabric is super warm. Like, really warm. It’s the best cold-weather sweater, Merino wool or not.

In addition to feeling cozy and warm, the Filson Guide sweater will keep you dry. The dense, tightly woven knit makes the material waterproof. And, even if it does wet out in a downpour, you won’t start to freeze. Merino wool maintains its insulative properties even when wet, which is perfect for Filson’s testing grounds in the Pacific Northwest.

The USA-sourced wool fibers are packed so deeply together that it makes the material waterproof. Moreover, this knit pattern improves the durability and longevity of the sweater, as it shouldn’t pill. This Filson Guide sweater is crafted so well that it will probably outlast you!

Ultimately, to say this sweater is expensive may be an understatement. It’s nearly twice the price of some of the more high-end Merino wool sweaters. However, we feel it’s priced accurately based on Filson’s unmatched quality and expertise. The fabric shouldn’t pill or tear over time as it’s created with best-in-industry craftsmanship. It should last for life with proper care, making it one of the most valuable Merino sweaters we can think of!

Best Value Merino Wool Sweater For Men

Goodthreads Lightweight Merino Wool Sweater

100% Merino wool | Lightweight | Regular fit | 16+ colors | Price: $

Pros: Extremely affordable | Simple, lightweight design | Lots of unique color options

Cons: Longterm durability concerns | Quality inconsistency

Listen, we get it: Merino wool is expensive. While we consider it the price for comfort and performance, it can still be overwhelming. Luckily, several cheaper options on the market have decent quality. And with this Goodthreads Lightweight Merino wool sweater, you may not be getting the best of the best, but you may be getting the best for your buck.

This sweater is priced affordably because the material doesn’t have that buttery, silky feel like other Merino wool sweaters. That’s not to say it isn’t soft (because it is), but you can tell a higher fiber thickness is used. Again, you shouldn’t be itchy if you wear it, but know there are finer options.

Still, from an objective perspective, this Goodthreads sweater has plenty of solid features. The fit is tapered and flattering without feeling constrictive. And, since it comes in nearly every cover you can think of, there’s bound to be one to match your style.

In terms of value, you’re not going to find a better Merino wool sweater than Goodthreads. And yes, it’s prone to snags, tears, and laundry mishaps. We understand. Yet, if you take proper care of it, you should have a simple, stylish Merino wool pullover that lasts for years.
