It’s about that time of year to gear up for hunting season. And if you want to bag that trophy buck finally, you’ll need gear that pushes you the extra mile or helps you wait the extra hour. For the latter, that means a good base layer. And the warmest, best base layers for hunting are made from our favorite fabric: Merino wool!

The key to Merino wool’s success as a base layer is its temperature regulation. Not only will it keep you warm in subzero conditions, but it will also keep you cool when you’re trekking through the backcountry.

And, since it’s so soft, Merino wool feels silky smooth against your skin. That’s why it makes the perfect base layer! Nobody said you couldn’t hunt in comfort, right?

Although not all of these Merino wool base layers are equal – that’s where we come in.

As lovers of Merino Wool Gear, we want to help you find your perfect hunting base layer. So, I’ll provide a technical buying guide for you. Then, I’ll give you the best lightweight, midweight, and heavyweight Merino wool base layers for hunting so you can find the best style for you.

Who knows? These Merino wool base layers may help you hit your bag limit this year!

Technical Guide: Merino Wool Hunting Base Layers

If you want to stay warm and dry up in the treestand, Merino wool is a must, especially as a base layer. However, as mentioned, finding the optimal base layer for you can be challenging. You must find the right size, style, pattern, and attributes. There are just so many options! It’s tricky adjusting your sights on one!

Luckily, I’ve compiled a quick guide to aid you in the hunt for your perfect hunting base layer. We’ll go over wool-specific factors like composition and fabric weight and cover performance aspects like style, camouflage, and extra features.

Let’s get to it!

As you may know by now, Merino wool is a soft, warm, and odor-proof material. However, one thing it lacks is durability. And, if you’re trudging through the thicket in your hunting gear, pure Merino wool clothing may snag and tear.

So, several of the base layers you’ll read about have synthetics like nylon, polyester, or spandex blended into the fabric for added strength while maintaining the beneficial properties of Merino wool. However, if you only wear your base layer underneath with something else on top, pure Merino wool does better, as it’s softer and more temperature-regulating.

It comes down to personal preference, but it’s still important to understand the performance level of each.

Merino wool is a fantastic temperature regulator (sheep face many harsh outdoor conditions). Although, when that wool is spun into a base layer, its thickness, or fabric weight, determines the level of warmth.

For example, ultralight and lightweight base layers (<160 gsm) work best in mild conditions or high-intensity activities, like stalking a herd. Yet if you’re sitting in a treestand in a blizzard, you may need a heavier next-to-skin later. If you need help deciding which fabric weight works best, see the helpful chart below from Minus33.

Merino Wool Layering Chart From Minus33

And since you’re trying to find your best Merino wool base layers for hunting, when we cover our favorite ones, I’ll separate them into three categories: lightweight, midweight, and heavyweight. I’ll give you more buying tips for each section and fabric weight specifics. That way, you can ignore the fluff and set your sights on the needed gear.

Do you like your shirts baggy? What about an athletic fit with a longer hem you can tuck in? Or do you want a standard, basic shirt?

I can’t tell you which style or fit suits you; just understand that sizing across brands can vary. So, consult each brand’s sizing charts if you want a base layer. That way, you won’t have to return it when hunting season is underway!

If you’re wearing you’re Merino wool as an outer layer, you’re going to need the proper camo for your environment. Only some of the Merino hunting layers have a camo option, but some go above and beyond with digitally printed patterns designed by animal vision experts.

It’s your choice, but it could make or break your hunt.

Many brands add extra features to their base layers to stand apart from the herd. Check out some of the typical features of Merino wool hunting base layers.

Merino wool hunting base layer features

If you like one of these shirts but it lacks a desired feature, don’t worry! Most Merino wool companies will release multiple designs varying in style and features. And if you want a specific or obscure feature and need help finding it, contact me! All I want is for you to find your perfect Merino wool gear!

3 Best Lightweight Merino Base Layers For Hunting

Lightweight base layers work best in mild conditions or during high-movement activities. They are thin (less than the thickness of two sheets of paper), so they better manage your next-to-skin moisture levels. Wool-synthetic blends are standard, as 100% Merino fabric is delicate. They’ll add ~10-15 °F of warmth to your setup in colder conditions.

Kuiu Ultra Merino 120 LT LS Crew

Kuiu Ultra Merino 120 LT LS Base Layer Crew in Valo Camo

Pros: Ultralight outdoor performance | 50+ UPF Protection | Awesome color & pattern options

Cons: Sizing discrepancies | May not feel soft at first

If you’re a hunter, you’re probably familiar with Kuiu. They make some of the high-quality hunting gear available, and one of their bestsellers – the Ultra Merino 120 LT LS crew – kicks off our top three lightweight Merino wool base layers for hunting. At 120 gsm, the blended Merino wool fabric is nearly the lightest on the market. It only weighs 5.8 oz but is highly durable. The additional nylon strengthens the delicate Merino wool fibers, so you don’t have to worry about tearing or snagging on branches.

Since this Merino wool hunting shirt is lightweight and breathable, you can use it on hot, sunny days (50+ UPF) or when trailing an animal covered in nervous sweat. And, if you’re hunting in cold weather, it makes an excellent layer that will add a few degrees of warmth while shivering in the tree stand. Either way, this Kuiu base layer will regulate your temperature no matter the temperature.

I like how this shirt fits; it is standard and not restrictive. However, some users have reported sizing discrepancies (typical for some Merino wool clothing). It’s not an issue, but give yourself enough before hunting season to exchange it if you’re hesitant.

Finally, this base layer is relatively affordable compared to the more expensive options you’ll see later. Still, this lightweight hunting base layer – and Kuiu’s other creations – have “high price” quality. So, you get a great shirt for less. I’ll take that deal any day.

Sitka Merino Core Lightweight Half-Zip

Pros: Best camo patterns | Industry-leading breathability | 3XL sizes available

Cons: Potential manufacturing defects | Sizing inconsistencies

If you’re looking for more of a pullover base layer than a crew, consider a Merino wool ½-zip. You get the natural temperature regulation properties from Merino wool, and you can quickly zip up and down for extra venting or warmth. And in terms of Merino wool ½-zips for hunting, the Sitka Merino Core ½-zip is my top choice.

The close-to-body performance fit makes this Sitka Gear half-zip a bunch-free base layer for chillier conditions, but it truly shines as a standalone layer. This is due to Sitka’s specialized concealment system designs. Three unique patterns – Open Country, Optifade Elevated II, & Optifade Subalpine – are engineered for specific terrain. Take a closer look at each one below.

  • Open Country: Neutral patterns camouflage among rocks, brush, and trees in open wilderness. Best for stalking herds of elk, mule deer, and more. 40-yard engagement.
  • Optifade Elevated II: Best for hunting whitetail as high contrast patterns conceal among foliage. 80-yard-or-under engagement (undetectable in a tree stand up to 15 ft.)
  • Optifade Subalpine: Designed by animal vision experts, this digitally rendered camouflage works best for stalking herds from ground level. 50-yard engagement or less.

Whatever design you choose, you can’t go wrong with Sitka Gear. Still, some users have noticed manufacturing defects within their shirts. So, if you get one, inspect it before embarking on your first trip of the season. Contact Sitka Gear for a return or exchange if there are any issues. They are always willing to help; just as much as you want incredible gear, they want to provide incredible gear!

SKRE Gear Kaibab 150 Quarter Zip

Skre Gear Kaibab 150 Merino Wool Top 1/4 Zip

Pros: Designed with mobility in mind | Soft next-to-skin feel | Front chest pocket

Cons: Sizing inconsistencies | Zipper issues

Rounding out the top three lightweight Merino wool base layers for hunting comes a unique shirt with features that punch above its weight. The Skre Gear Kaibab 150 ¼ Zip is a stretchy, comfortable Merino wool blend suitable for the most extended treks. The natural stretch and recovery of the fabric provide mobility in every direction, which is especially useful for archers.

Although lightweight (150 gsm), this ¼-zip works best for cold-weather hunting- anything down to 20 °F. If anything is colder, you should get a heavier layer. But if you’re in the Northeast in November, you’ll be OK with this and a hunting jacket.

Forget about the performance and warmth; this base layer has some cool features that are hard to find in the industry. For one, there is a usable chest zipper pocket, which is unheard of for base layers of this weight. Moreover, there are thumb loops, good ventilation, and a bulk-free fit. It’s everything you want for your next hunting trip.

The Skre Gear Kaibab 150 ¼ Zip is a top choice for anyone willing to do anything to stay on the trail. It’s got the power of Merino wool with many unique features. It’s a resilient layer for a resilient hunter. So, if that sounds like you, head over to SKRE Gear to get one!

3 Best Midweight Merino Base Layers For Hunting

Midweight base layers are the perfect balance of warmth and breathability. The extra thickness traps more hot air, creating a barrier against the cold, but still allows for airflow and moisture management. At this fabric weight (180-250 gsm), you’ll get a wide range of styles, designs, and uses. Some can be worn underneath, overtop, or as a midlayer. Whichever way you wear it is up to you!

Smartwool Men’s Classic Thermal Base Layer Crew

Smartwool Men's Classic Thermal Base Layer Crew Camo

Pros: The “classic” Merino wool base layer | Updated fit improves functionality | Trusted Merino brand

Cons: Long-term durability concerns | Potential manufacturing defects

In the world of Merino wool base layers, Smartwool is a master hunter. Their years of experience and expertise in their craft have helped so many people with theirs. They are the benchmark for other Merino wool brands, and their classic thermal base layer is, truthfully, “The Classic” midweight hunting base layer.

Yet, even the classics need updating with the times. And Smartwool knows that! That’s why this edition of their classic base layer has a more modern fit and design. The shoulder panels reduce strap rash, as no seams can dig against your skin.

The updated design is an improvement, although some prefer the old style. And, while some users complain about durability (holes, laundry issues, etc.), that’s the case with all Merino wool clothing. And, if you properly care for it, you won’t have any problems! Trust me, the guy whose laundry is about 15% Smartwool gear at the moment.

So, if you’re interested in Smartwool’s Classic Thermal Base Layer, I don’t blame you! I love mine. There are 15 colors, so you can choose whichever design you want. Get whatever color you want! It’s not like the deer will see under your jacket anyway!

BlackOvis Tuscarora Merino Long Sleeve Crew

Black Ovis Tuscarora Merino Long Sleeve Crew

Pros: Strong, durable material | Versatile fabric weight | Extremely affordable

Cons: Limited color options | May shrink or warp with improper care

Our technical guide mentioned that understanding fabric weight can be tricky. A lighter midweight base layer (~200 gsm) works well in all conditions. It’s heavy enough to keep you warm and toasty but thin enough to breathe and manage moisture in your microclimate. You can’t get much better at this fabric weight for hunting base layers than the BlackOvis Tuscarora Merino Wool Long Sleeve Crew.

One thing we love about BlackOvis is that they genuinely take customer feedback to heart. Their Tuscarora crew is an update on their old NWT 200 base layer, with the improvements coming from what customers said. They changed the fit from athletic to standard for better flow and movement. Also, the fabric formula shifted from wool-spandex to wool-nylon, which is much stronger.

Finally, this Merino wool hunting base layer is super affordable. As opposed to the triple-digit prices of the other options, you’ll get the Tuscarora for nearly half the price. And while only two colors are available, seasonal releases and new colors are posted regularly. Outside the crew, you can also grab all of BlackOvis’s Tuscarora hunting line, including tees, gaiters, underwear, and more! You won’t get a better deal anywhere else!

Ridge Merino Aspect Midweight Quarter-Zip

Ridge Merino Midweight Aspect Quarter Zip In Olive

Pros: Fantastic warmth-to-weight ratio | Improved fabric durability | Longer hem stays tucked

Cons: Limited availability | No camo option available

OK, I guess this Ridge Merino Aspect base layer is more lightweight than midweight, but as I said before, fabric weights can be tricky. This 180-gsm ¼-zip punches above its weight in the warmth department. It’s another one of those “Goldilocks” fabric weights; it’s not too hot or cold but just right!

The fabric itself is unique due to its industry-leading strength. Ridge Merino uses their (m)Force Technology for this base layer, which is 50% more durable than similar products. They spin Merino wool fibers around a nylon core, strengthening the material while maintaining the beneficial natural properties of Merino wool. Now, that’s fabric engineering at its finest!

Another unique feature of this midweight base layer is its longer hem. In other words, the shirt should be – and stay – tucked. Plus, with the athletic fit and hidden thumb loops, the Aspect ¼-zip will stay put no matter the adventure, keeping you comfortable and warm the entire time.

And, if the ¼-zip style is not for you, Ridge Merino offers their Aspect material in different styles and colors, like their Aspect long underwear. Check out this midweight base layer – and the rest of Ridge Merino’s base layer collection – below!

3 Best Heavyweight Merino Base Layers For Hunting

These heavyweight Merino wool base layers are the warmest of the warm. They are what you need during the chilly late-season or long alpine hunts. The 300+ gsm thickness creates a barrier against even the most Arctic conditions. Still, you may sweat if you decide to wear it above freezing.

First Lite Furnace 350 HENLEY

Pros: Slight loft for insulation | Cuffs & thumb loops for layering | Versatile henley design

Cons: Snap button issues | Not as soft as other base layers

As First Lite says, go “punch that tag in cold weather” with their Furnace 350 Henley. With a heavyweight interlocking knit, this base layer has a slight insulating loft, trapping warm air in the empty pockets within the fabric. This unique design makes it the best base layer for cold stationary hunts or late-season excursions.

The secret to this heavyweight henley’s warmth is the high-quality fabric. First Lite uses their Merino-X blend of 95% Merino wool and 5% Spandex – to add structure, as lofted knits often lose shape. Moreover, the fabric has no sheen or sound. The result is a stretchy, comfy, warm, and quiet hunting layer to help you finally get that trophy buck.

Outside the temperature regulation properties and well-engineered fabric, the Furnace 350 Henley has all the features hunters love. The Raglan sleeves eliminate chafing from backpack or rifle straps, which is nice. Moreover, the articulated fit and flatlock seams provide extra comfort. So, you’ll always feel cozy and warm, even if it’s freezing and you’re cramped for hours in a tree stand.

So, if you plan to post up when it’s chilly, the Furnace 350 Henley will be your go-to later. It’s a must-have for hunts, where staying warm is imperative to mark your tag. Get yours before the cold creeps in, and keep putting in the time all winter.

Minus33 Yukon Expedition Weight Base LAyer

Minus33 Yukon Expedition Heavyweight Merino Wool Base Layer Black

Pros: The warmest ‘shirt’ you’ll ever buy | Surprisingly breathable | Big & tall sizes available

Cons: Only should be used in cold conditions | Must launder with care

No frills. No bells or whistles. Just warmth! The Minus33 Yukon Expedition Weight Base Layer is the warmest “shirt” you’ll ever try. Aptly named after a cold-weather wonderland, this Yukon shirt is ready for any conditions. At 400 gsm, it’s one of the heaviest interlocking knit shirts on the market. It’s one of my favorite heavyweight Merino wool base layers; if I’m going to be outside in subzero temperatures – no matter the activity – you better believe I’m wearing mine.

Yet, even with a thicker fabric, the Yukon base layer is surprisingly breathable. It’s just one of the many beneficial natural properties of Merino wool. And since this shirt is 100% Merino wool, you get the best. It manages moisture by wicking it away from your body, keeping you cool when bushwacking and warm when you’re waiting, and waiting, and waiting.

Finally, the Yukon Expedition Weight Crew is an ultra-cold weather base layer, which will do you no good in mild conditions. If you want to be more technical, Minus33 recommends temperature ranges of 0-30 for sedentary activities, but if you’re on the move, you’ll be toasty into the negatives.

Duckworth Powder Hoody

Duckworth Powder Hoody Sand

Pros: Top-notch versatility | A seasonal bessteller | 100% sourced & made in USA

Cons: Wish there could be more wool | Expensive

When I’m out in the cold, I like extra warmth around my head (mainly because I’m bald). So, I prefer a hoody as a heavyweight base layer, and the one I use – and love ever so much – is the Duckworth Powder Hoody.

The main reason I love this Merino wool hoodie is its versatility. The construction is relaxed and warm yet lightweight compared to your average hoodie. And with a fabric weight of 300 gsm, you get plenty of warmth and breathability. No wonder it continues to be one of Duckworth’s most popular products year after year!

Yet, what sets the Powder Hoody apart is the wool. Unlike the softer, less hardy sheep of Australia & New Zealand, Duckworth sources their from Helle Rambouillet sheep – a close cousin of the Merino – at their ranch in Montana. As the sheep live in the drastic conditions of the Rockies, their wool is a lot more rugged and weatherproof while maintaining the same soft properties. Moreover, all the material – not just the wool – is sourced and manufactured in the USA!

Still, all this high-quality American-made hoodie comes at a steep price tag. But as a happy wearer of the Powder Hoody, I can tell you it’s absolutely worth it. If you’re interested, check it out below!

What does ‘hike your own hike‘ mean to you?

I’m so bombarded with new gear, new trails, and new hiking advice that I often forget why I hike in the first place: freedom. Nature’s mirror is stunningly beautiful.

Out on the trails, I’m my best self. I’m the person I want to be for my family and friends. And we want you to be your best self on the trail, too. Merino wool helps us achieve this by making us comfortable and protecting us from the ever-changing elements.

So, we’ve compiled a list of the best Merino wool hiking shirts for men to aid you in finding your best outdoor self! There are three shirts for each season (twelve in total), so whichever trail you conquer, no matter the conditions, Merino wool has you covered.

Disclosure: Merino Wool Gear DOES NOT sponsor products to maintain our genuineness and authenticity. However, as an affiliate member, we may earn a small commission from qualifying purchases.

Best Merino Wool Hiking Shirt For Summer

When you think of wool, you typically don’t think of summer. Instead, you may picture all those itchy wool sweaters from grandma’s house. Luckily, that’s not what Merino wool is about. It’s a high-tech performance fabric that showcases wool’s highly sought-after natural properties. And the best part about these properties is that they work in both cold and hot conditions. That’s why Merino wool is such a great fabric in the summer.

And, in terms of hot-weather hiking shirts, you can’t beat the breathability of Merino. Although this means it can be delicate, which is why many fabrics are corespun with sturdier synthetic fibers. This increases the strength and longevity of the shirt. Moreover, you’ll want something to provide adequate protection from the summer sun.

So when you’re looking at these summer hiking shirts, focus on fabric weight (for breathability), fabric composition (for durability), and UPF rating (for sun protection).

Icebreaker Merino Tech Lite II

100% Merino wool | 150 gsm | Regular fit | 9 colors | Price: $$$

Icebreaker Merino Tech Lite II Short Sleeve Shirt Olive

Pros: High-quality material | Free-flowing fit | Offset shoulder seams

Cons: Sizing may run large | Not the softest Merino wool

Long-distance backpackers will understand the importance of an odor-free hiking shirt. Pure Merino wool has no stench or funk, even after dozens of miles on the trail. And in terms of summer hiking shirts, our favorite smell-free, 100% Merino wool tee is the Icebreaker Tech Lite II.

In terms of performance, this Merino wool hiking tee is at the top of the class. The free-flowing fit is comfy and aids in moisture management. Moreover, design features like offset shoulder seams and a drop tail hem prevent unwanted backpack chafing. Although some users say this tee can be overly roomy, we view the fit as standard. Consult Icebreaker’s sizing charts if you have concerns about the fit.

Still, it’s not the softest fabric compared with the other hiking shirts on this list. Nevertheless, this adds to the material’s strength. Pure Merino can be delicate, and the 18.9-micron fibers are slightly more robust than softer 17.5-micron ones.

All in all, the Tech Lite II is a simple, versatile tee ready for any adventure. It does an excellent job of regulating your microclimate and won’t let you down when pulling 20+ mile days. And since they are just over 5 oz., you could pack an extra one for camp. Choose from any of the nine colors (plus seasonal releases) below!

Patagonia Capilene® Cool Merino Shirt

65% Merino, 35% recycled polyester | ~125 gsm | Slim fit | Price: $$$

Patagonia Cool Merino Capilene Crew in Light Blue

Pros: Enhanced breathability features | Functional base layer | Sustainably produced

Cons: Sleeve & hem length may be short | Lighter shades may be see-through

Hiking in the heat with long sleeves may seem counterintuitive. However, they actually keep you cooler – especially when they’re Merino wool. The material is soft, moisture-wicking, and much more. And one of the lightest, highest performing Merino wool baselayer/shirt/tee – or whatever you want to call it – is the Patagonia Capilene Cool Merino LS shirt.

This base layer’s enhanced breathability features set it apart from other Merino wool hiking shirts. It’s about as thin as possible without being tear-resistant (4.9 oz. weight) and has side vents for better airflow. Although it’s so thin, some lighter shades may be see-through. That’s not a big deal if you’re hiking in the middle of nowhere, but it could be a problem if you wear it around town.

Yet the eco-friendly materials make this shirt – and most of Patagonia’s products – stand apart. Merino wool, in itself, is sustainable. Yet Patagonia uses wool certified by the Responsible Wool Standard, an industry recognition focusing on the ethics of wool harvesting, land management, and animal welfare. Moreover, the Capilene material is just recycled polyester, added for strength and durability.

Finally, Patagonia has this Cool Merino shirt in short sleeves if you prefer. But if you haven’t yet hiked with long sleeves, try. Not only do you get the moisture management benefits, but you get the added protection from the sun and all those pesky bugs. So, if you’re interested, head to Patagonia to learn more about this Capilene Merino crew.

Ridge Merino Solstice Sun Hoodie

87% Merino, 13% Nylon | 145 gsm | Relaxed fit | 7 colors | Price: $$$

Mens Ridge Merino Wool Sun Hoodie Tan

Pros: Ultralight yet durable | 30+ UPF certified | Functional oversized hood

Cons: Sizing & color availability | Long sleeve due to thumbholes

You must worry about sun exposure if you’re hiking in the summer. You can go the sunscreen route, but you’ll have to reapply every few hours. Instead, try rocking a sun hoodie like the Ridge Merino Solstice. You get 30+ SPF protection as Merino wool is naturally UV-resistant. Think about it: sheep are in the sun all day, so their wool has to protect them from being burned. In other words, you get the same protection as the sheep!

And we get it; wearing a hoodie in the summer sun may not sound appealing. However, this Solstice hoodie is super ultralight. The fabric flows so freely that it barely feels like you’re wearing anything. Plus, the oversized hood drapes nicely over any ball cap or helmet if you’re climbing. Overall, it’s one of our favorite designs of all the Merino wool hoodies we’ve tried!

Although, in the world of Merino wool, ‘ultralight‘ and ‘free-flowing‘ often translate to rips and tears. Yet, Ridge Merino understands this challenge and uses (m)Force™ Technology – Merino wrapped around a strong nylon core – for extra strength. I have heavily used mine for over three years, and the cuffs have only slightly worn. Other than that, the longevity of this ultralight fabric defies the norm.

Finally, these Solstice hoodies tend to go fast, especially when seasonal colors are released. So, if you find a color you like and your size is available, get it before it’s gone!

Best Merino Wool Hiking Shirt For Fall

If you’re hiking in the fall, conditions can change instantly. You may start your hike on a clear, mild day, and then a cold front rolls in, pouring buckets. So, since your gear is the only thing protecting you from the unforgiving elements, it must keep you dry and warm.

The best thing you can do to manage your microclimate is to fine-tune your layering system. The standard lineup is a lightweight base layer, a pullover mid-layer like a fleece, and an ultralight puffer for insulation. Carrying a combination of these three will keep you protected down to frigid temps. Although, due to Merino wool’s warmth-to-weight properties, sometimes a midlayer can double as an overlayer and vice versa.

So, if you’re looking for a fall hiking shirt, focus on fabric weight (for temperature regulation & breathability) and fit (for versatility & layering).

Smartwool Merino 250 Base Layer Quarter Zip

100% Merino wool | 250 gsm | Slim fit | 12 colors | Price: $$$$

Smartwool Merino 250 Base Layer Quarter Zip Charcoal

Pros: Top-notch temperature regulation | High-performance features | Unique color block design

Cons: Initial itchiness may occur | Susceptible to snagging

Making a ‘Best Merino Wool‘ roundup is challenging without mentioning Smartwool. The sheer variety of Merino wool products they offer is astounding. And better yet, no matter the gear, you still get the same high-quality craftsmanship as always. Yet among all the new releases and specialized apparel, we can’t help but get back to the basics with Smartwool’s flagship 250 1/4 zip base layer.

The midweight, 100% Merino wool fabric hits the sweet spot regarding temperature regulation. It’s thick enough to keep you warm at freezing temperatures and thin enough to keep you dry while you sweat through the switchbacks. I like to call this 250 gsm weight the ‘Goldilocks‘ of fabric thicknesses. It’s not too hot or too cold. And feels just right!

Moreover, this base layer comes with tons of performance features. The flatlock seams and shoulder panels prevent any strap rub or chafing. And Smartwool has recently updated the fit of their classic thermal by making it slimmer. This allows for better layering and more next-to-skin comfort.

Finally, one unique aspect of the Smartwool 250 1/4-Zip is that it comes in a dozen unique patterns and designs. So, if you want something other than basic black – or a hood on your hiking shirt  you’re in luck. Click below to see if Smartwool has a color to match your style!

Wool & Prince Waffle Henley

78% Merino, 22% nylon | 270 gsm | Regular fit | 3 colors | Price: $$$$

Wool And Prince Waffle Henley Gray

Pros: High-quality fabric | Versatile style | Surprisingly breathable

Cons: Sleeves & Hem length may be long | Limited color selection

The problem with many hiking shirts is that they are hiking shirts. Their style isn’t necessarily acceptable for day-to-day activities. And since many of these shirts are expensive, you’ll want to get the most versatility from each garment. So, with all of that in mind, one piece of Merino wool gear that’s functional, fashionable, and ready for adventure is the Wool&Prince Waffle Henley.

The thing we love most about this shirt – and most Wool&Prince clothing – is the expert attention to detail. This shirt uses two strong nylon filaments coiled around a 17.5-micron Merino wool core. Moreover, the buttons add versatility to an already stylish piece. So, if it gets toasty on the trail, you can undo a few buttons for extra airflow and a touch of personal style.

Yet, even with a desirable style, the sizing proportions differ from what you would expect from this type of shirt. Some users have noted that the sleeve and hem lengths are longer than similar products of the same size. So, it’s best to check the Wool&Prince sizing charts before ordering. The only other real drawback is that this waffle henley comes in only three colors: black, gray, and olive.

To sum up, the Waffle Henley is a genuinely unique and high-performing shirt. The lattice-like structure maintains a warm and dry microclimate. At the same time, the nylon-wrapped provides the material strength needed for the great outdoors. And when you’ve finished your excursion, it will help you blend in at the closest pub!

Duckworth Men’s Powder Hoody

50% Merino, 30% acrylic, 20% polyester | 300 gsm | Relaxed fit | 6 colors | Price: $$$$

Duckworth Powder Hoody Blue

Pros: Excellent drape & design | Warmth without bulk | 100% sourced and manufactured in the USA

Cons: No hood adjustment | Sizing may run large

Many Merino wool brands source their raw material from Australia or New Zealand. Then, they send it to Asia for manufacturing, then finally to the shelves in the USA. Duckworth, however, keeps their entire supply chain in the USA. For this Powder Hoody, they source their wool from Rambouillet sheep (a close cousin of the Merino) from their own ranch in Dillon, Montana. Then, all the scouring, spinning, dying, knitting, and manufacturing are done within the USA. By keeping its whole supply within the country, Duckworth has better control of their manufacturing process. In the case of the Powder hoodie, this leads to one high-quality, unique piece of Merino Wool Gear.

This hoodie has such a raw feel but in a good way. The soft yet durable Powder fabric is “Duckworth’s version of a wool fleece.” It has a simple, minimalistic design that works well with outdoor clothing, whether wearing it as an outerlayer or super-cold-weather base layer. We’d love to see extra features like a hood drawstring or elastic cuffs, but that would detract from this sweatshirt’s chill vibe.

Finally, this hoody truly has a cult following. People love how it looks and feels, and I can’t blame them because I love mine, too! So if you’re ready to drink the Kool-Aid (there’s no going back), head over to Duckworth below!

Best Merino Wool Hiking Shirt For Winter

It takes a special breed of individual to venture into the cold, frigid backcountry. With threats of frostbite, you need reliable gear that keeps you warm. And as you probably know by now, Merino wool regulates your next-to-skin temperature to skin temperature, so you can go exploring in any conditions.

So, for Merino wool winter hiking gear, you really want to look into the fabric weight and/or wool construction. For example, Merino can be used as insulation in addition to the traditional knit fabric. If you’re looking for an underlayer, you don’t want anything too bulky that will have you looking like the kid from A Christmas Story. “I can’t put my arms down!”

Minus33 Yukon Expedition Crew

100% Merino wool | 400 gsm | Regular fit | 3 colors | Price: $$$$

Minus33 Yukon Expedition Heavyweight Merino Wool Base Layer Black

Pros: Ultimate cold-weather base layer | Moisture management properties | Big & tall sizes available

Cons: Only for freezing conditions | Launder with care

Canada’s Yukon territory (“The Klondike”) is a popular destination for winter explorers. From long-distance snowshoeing to cold-weather kayaking, there are plenty of outdoor activities for everyone. But, no matter your chosen sport, you must stay warm. Temperatures there can drop to double-digit negatives in an instant. And that’s where the Minus33 Yukon Expedition crew truly thrives.

This shirt is the warmest base layer, Merino wool or not. At 400 gsm, it’s about as thick as possible while still being able to rest smoothly underneath an outerlayer. Moreover, the smooth fabric, tagless interior, and flatlock seams add to the Yukon’s exceptional comfort. So, you get insane temperature regulation and a supersoft next-to-skin feel.

Editor’s Note: While Minus33 says you can tumble dry the Yukon crew on low heat, we suggest skipping the dryer altogether to avoid shrinkage. Just flat dry on a towel instead.

Also, Minus33 takes its customer’s feedback seriously. When I started Merino Wool Gear, the Yukon Expedition base layer only had one color (black) and your standard sizes S-2XL. Today, Minus33 offers this heavyweight thermal in three colors and several big & tall sizes. This continual growth and customer satisfaction level is why Minus33 is such a unique brand.

So, head to Minus33 before embarking on your next cold-weather adventure, and check out some of the best Merino wool winter gear! Finally, if you’re serious about this Yukon crew, go with the matching bottoms to complete the set. That way, thick, warm Merino wool protects every inch of your body.

Filson Crew Neck Guide Sweater

100% Merino wool | Heavyweight | Regular fit | 2 colors | Price: $$$$$+

Filson Heavyweight Merino Wool Guide Sweater Navy

Pros: High-quality craftsmanship | Heavy-duty knit construction | Water-repellent

Cons: Sizing discrepancies | Super expensive

Let’s get one thing out of the way: this sweater is super expensive. Like, more-than-a-car-payment expensive. Honestly, almost all of Filson’s gear is – you guessed it – expensive! But I can’t stress this enough: this guide sweater is worth it. The price tag may seem excessive, but you get what you pay for in the best way possible. Filson has some of the highest-quality craftsmanship in the industry and even uses 100% USA-sourced wool, which we love.

Besides the pure attention to detail, this guide sweater is our list’s warmest Merino wool hiking shirt. It’s even one of the highest-performing Merino wool sweaters overall. The tight, heavy knit is surprisingly breathable, even at 50 °F or more. Moreover, the dense weaving pattern improves durability (less pilling, snags, etc.) and water-repellency. The latter is exciting since the garment uses no synthetics, just pure, strong, and comfy Merino wool.

The classic, relaxed fit is functional and timeless. You can either wear it as the only outerlayer (suggested) or pair it with another jacket for more-than-enough warmth. It will always stay in style if you care for it correctly (dry clean only). You could even pass it on to future generations as an heirloom piece. Still, maintain the ribbed cuffs and hem since their structure is usually the first to fail.

In short, this is just one darn good piece of gear. Filson says it best: “Sure, we could make it lighter and not so hardy, but then it wouldn’t be a Filson Crewneck Guide Sweater.” Get yours below!

Ibex Wool Air Hoodie

Shell: 100% nylon | Insulation: 80% Merino, 20% polyester | Athletic fit | 5 colors | Price: $$$$$

Ibex Wool Aire Merino Wool Insulated Hoodie Blue and Orange

Pros: Warmth-to-weight ratio | Wide temperature range | Packs away small

Cons: Zipper durability | No cinch cord at waist

In addition to being a soft, knit fabric, did you know Merino wool can be used as jacket insulation? It’s in the same ‘warmth-to-weight‘ as down. Although, aside from the wishy-washy ethics of down harvesting, Merino wool has an advantage since it still maintains warmth while wet. If you have a down puffer that wets out, it’s just an overpriced trashbag until it dries completely. Merino wool is a better choice for packable puffers, and the Ibex Wool Aire Hoodie is one high-performing packable puffer

The proprietary Merino wool insulation works at temperatures ranging from cool summer nights to subzero winter mornings (depending on what you layer underneath). Ibex added features like the scuba-style hood and snug, athletic fit, contributing to the jacket’s warmth. At the same time, the elastic cuffs and hem do an adequate job of keeping everything in place. Although, we would love to see a cinch cord along the waist to protect against chilly drafts.

Finally, compared to backpacker favorites like the Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket, this Ibex Wool Aire Hoodie outperforms in many aspects. It weighs slightly less than the Nano Puff (11.375 oz. to 11.9 oz.) and has a higher insulation fill (80 grams to 60 grams). So, you truly get more warmth at less weight. Head on over to Ibex to check them out for yourself!

Best Merino Wool Hiking Shirt For Spring

When the snow melts, the fun begins. Venturing off into the woods on a spring hike is beautiful; the birds sing, the flowers bloom, and the sun peeks through the clouds. It’s one of my favorite times of the year.

Still, even during a pristine spring season, weather conditions can change quickly. And, as seasoned hikers will know, spring means wet. So, you’ll want to have gear that’s quick-drying and breathable. Moreover, You’ll want to carry versatile gear that performs well across various temperatures.

When checking out the best Merino wool hiking shirts for spring, consider the fabric construction (versatility) and fabric weight (temperature regulation). For the latter, you’ll want to look for something midweight or lower and focus on layering.

Woolx Essential Tee

85% Merino, 12% nylon, 3% spandex | 150 gsm | Regular fit | 5 colors | Price: $$$

Man wearing a yellow long sleeve Merino tee by Woolx

Pros: Extra comfort design features | Improved durability | Excellent summer base layer

Cons:  Sizing may run large | Sleeves may be short for taller people

When the cold winter months are behind you, and you’re ready to hit the trail again, don’t forget to pack this Woolx Essential tee. Coming in at 150 gsm, you’ll get plenty of airflow and breathability from this ultralight fabric. You can wear it as a standalone hiking shirt in warmer conditions during the day while still getting 10-15 °F extra warmth if you pair it with an overlayer at night. This long-sleeve tee will keep your next-to-skin microclimate dry and warm no matter what you wear overtop- even a sleeping bag.

As with much of Woolx’s clothing, the Essential tee has extra comfort features to make your early-season hike successful. The predominantly Merino wool fabric still has 3% spandex for more healthy stretch, while the raglan sleeves – as you should know by now – prevent chafing from shoulder straps. Woolx even added underarm gussets, promoting airflow and keeping your armpits nice and dry! Moreover, the extra addition of nylon improves durability, so, hopefully, you won’t tear the material if it gets snagged on a branch.

Finally, regarding sizing, some users say that the Essential tee runs large. Moreover, some note that the sleeves are long. Woolx has included the garment and body measurements in their size chart. They do as much as possible to ensure you can find the shirt that fits your body type.

Helly Hansen LIFA Merino Midweight 2-in-1 Hoodie

57% Merino, 43% propylene | 225 gsm | Athletic fit | 4 colors | Price: $$$

Many wearing navy helly hansen lifa Merino hoodie

Pros: 2-in-1 fabric technology | Hood fits snug | Additional comfort features

Cons: Manufacturing defects possible | Not completely odor-resistant

Helly-Hansen typically makes ski gear, but both ski and hiking gear share many of the same properties. They must provide warmth without bulk, protecting you from the elements while allowing room for movement. Moreover, with all this movement, they must be able to breathe. And even if this LIFA Merino midweight hoodie is designed for the slopes, it works just as well on the trail.

The secret to this base layer is its unique 2-in-1 LIFA Merino construction. The synthetic polypropylene interior wicks moisture away from the skin, keeping you dry, while the ZQ Merino exterior acts as a barrier to the environment, regulating your temperature. So, even if you’re trekking through cold and clammy conditions, this Merino hoodie will protect you.

Although the design is well-engineered, some users have noted minor flaws and defects in their hoodies. Some imperfections are purely aesthetic, which isn’t much of an issue. However, if there is a loose seam in a critical stitch, you may have durability problems in the future. So, if this concerns you, thoroughly inspect the shirt before ripping off the tags, or else Helly-Hansen, according to their return policy, only accepts returns in their original condition.

Finally, the last thing we love about this hoodie is the hood! It fits snugger than expected, which works well as an extra wind layer for an alpine trip. And, if you want you plan on doing some climbing or scrambling, you can easily fit a helmet on top. In other words, this Helly-Hansen base layer is ready for any adventure.

Meriwool Midweight Long Sleeve Thermal Shirt

100% Merino wool | 250 gsm | Regular fit | 8 colors | Price: $$

Pros: Top price-to-quality ratio | Ultrasoft next-to-skin feel | Tall sizes available

Cons: Neck shape and durability | Shrinking may occur

As you can probably tell by now, Merino wool hiking shirts can be expensive. Yet, suppose all you want is a minimal base layer without all the bells and whistles. In that case, this midweight thermal from Meriwool is an inexpensive alternative. You still get the added comfort and temperature regulation of 100% Merino wool shirts without a significant dent in your bank account!

And we get it; the term ‘value‘ often indicates a drop in quality, but Meriwool’s gear is different. Their affordability is one of the three pillars of their brand (comfort & performance being the other two). So even at a lower price, you still get clothing that keeps you warm and protected in the backcountry. And as any weathered backpacker knows: reliable, inexpensive gear is hard to come by.

Although there are some design aspects, like the swooped neck, that could be improved. Over time, the neckline may droop or crinkle without proper care. So, while Meriwool markets this product as dryer-safe, we suggest flat-drying on a towel instead. This will help prevent the fabric from deforming and shrinking.

Overall, if all you need is a trustworthy base layer, this Meriwool midweight thermal is your best bet. It’s just as comfortable and high-performing as some of the more expensive base layers we’ve tested, but still at the same quality. And that’s what Meriwool is all about.

We are all adjusting to the new normal, and isolation has been rampant over the past 18 months. So, I thought it would be nice to spread our wings and fly into something new: the best men’s Merino wool shirts for travel.

I’ll first go over why Merino wool is such a fantastic fabric for travel clothing and then dive into our top 10 favorite Merino wool travel shirts. Hopefully, there’s a piece of gear that piques your interest and reignites your eternal travel flame.

Because no matter how far you travel, Merino wool gear lets you experience the comfort of home.

Disclosure & Transparency: Merino Wool Gear DOES NOT sponsor products to maintain genuineness and authenticity. Yet as an affiliate member, we may earn a commission from qualifying purchases.

Why Is Merino Wool The Best Travel Fabric?

My first ever experience with Merino wool was a lightweight wool buff I used for an eight-country Eurotrip over ten years ago. So for the last decade, traveling and Merino wool have gone hand-in-hand for me.

The level of comfort, odor resistance, versatility, and performance of Merino wool gear makes it the top choice for weekend warriors and digital nomads worldwide!

So, let’s closely examine some of Merino’s top-notch travel properties. And hopefully – in combination with some of the Merino travel gear suggestions – you’ll be able to find a shirt that fits all your adventure needs.

Odor Resistance

No more layover stink. You know what I’m talking about. When you get to a new city, the first thing you should be doing is exploring, not showering. With Merino wool, your clothes will stay fresh all day long.

But why? Well, it has to do with Merino’s moisture properties. Basically, nasty odors from your skin get trapped in the moisture within the fabric, not the material itself. So when you’re on the road, you can go a solid week (or more) without smelling like the inside of a gym bag.

Still, just because your clothing doesn’t stink doesn’t mean you don’t too. Pack some travel wipes for crying out loud!

Comfort

In my not-so-humble opinion, Merino wool is the softest everyday fabric on the market, hands down. The ultrasoft next-to-skin feel is due to the fine, low-micron fibers. Plus, wool’s natural crimp provides both stretchiness and support, so your clothing moves when you do.

Merino Wool Thickness

And, people often ask: isn’t wool itchy? No, not Merino wool, at least. The fibers are so tiny that your skin doesn’t view them as irritants (unlike rough, traditional wool). And since wool fibers are composed of keratin – just like human hair – it’s improbable that you are allergic to it.

All in all, the comfort of Merino travel clothing truly makes it a cut above the rest. In other words, it feels like you’re wrapped in a cloud while you’re flying through the clouds.

Versatility

You may not think of Merino wool as the most fashionable of travel fabrics, but there are many styles to choose from. I usually like to travel with a couple of basic Merino tees and a fantastic wool sun hoodie (as you will learn soon). But there are polos, button-downs, base layers, and so many other types of Merino wool clothing that you can pack on your adventures.

The overarching moral is that Merino wool comes in all shapes, styles, sizes, colors, and patterns. It’s versatile enough to wear as a layering item or a standalone piece. Even some Merino wool travel shirts I’ll cover could be considered formalwear!

So, whichever your travel style, there’s a functional, versatile piece of Merino wool gear for you!

Unbound Merino

Editor’s Note: Although many Merino wool travel shirts claim to be wrinkle-resistant, that’s never 100% the case. Everything wrinkles, and with Merino, many lighter-weight shirts tend to wrinkle more. The best way to avoid this is to look for a heavier shirt or just use the military roll (or what I like to call the Chipotle Roll because burritos are delicious) while packing. Check out the steps above. Image adapted from Unbound Merino.

Performance

Finally, you truly can’t beat the performance of Merino wool clothing in the travel-sphere. Wool does an excellent job at regulating your body temperature. Therefore, you need less clothing to achieve the same level of protection.

In other words, traveling with Merino wool allows you to pack less to adventure more. What more could you want?

Travel Pro Tip: Merino wool is not as quick-drying as synthetic clothing, so always allow a couple hours for your laundry to dry on the road. I prefer flat-drying on a towel, but I’ve also been known to hang a travel clothesline on my hostel bunk from time to time.

Best Overall Men’s Merino Wool Travel Shirt

Unbound Merino Crew Neck T-Shirt

100% Merino | Lightweight (190 gsm) | 17.5 microns | Slim-to-Regular fit | Multiple Colors | $$$

Unbound Merino Crew Neck Tee

Pros: Literally designed for travel | Minimalist style | Ultrasoft fabric

Cons: Some user-reported shoulder seam issues | Sizing may run small

Made for travelers – by travelers – Unbound Merino flies in first-class on Travel Gear airlines. Okay, that was a lame attempt at humor, but you get the point: if you want Merino wool travel gear, you can’t go wrong with Unbound Merino.

And their crew-neck Merino tee is a must-have in any traveler’s kit.

The ultrasoft Merino is comfortable and odor-resistant! And while early versions of this tee had some seam irritation, I think Unbound has finally designed out that issue. It’s pretty cool to see the development of these travel tees over such a short amount of time. True innovation.

Yet, the thing we love most about the Unbound Merino crew neck is the simple, no-frills design. It’s a t-shirt. A d*mn comfortable t-shirt that you can wear anywhere, anytime. What you see is what you get. And you’ll get is one of the best Merino wool travel shirts on the market.

Runner-Up: Men’s Merino Travel Tee

Olivers Convoy Long Sleeve Tee

100% Merino | Lightweight (165 gsm) | 18.5 microns | Regular fit | Black or Gray | $$$

Olivers Long Sleeve Convoy Tee

Pros: Ultrasoft Merino fabric | Functional & stylish shoulder cut | Excellent breathability

Cons: Fabric tends to wrinkle under chest | Length a bit long

There’s something just so sleek and stylish about the Oliver’s Convoy LS Tee. The drape and cut are some of the best I’ve seen. Plus, the regular fit makes it a perfect standalone shirt or an integral part of any layering system.

And, how can I forget the ultrasoft, uber-comfortable, 100% Merino wool fabric? I mean, the material must be sourced from the best suppliers. I’d even venture to say it’s one of the softest tees on this list. But again, I’ve found that metric hard to define, so take it with a subjective grain of salt.

Although, suppose you’re deterred from the long-sleeves because you are more of a tropical traveler. In that case, you should know that the lightweight fabric works to regulate your body temperature. And in my experience, wearing Merino wool sleeves in hotter climates can help cool you down. Still, that’s a topic of debate for another time.

Instead, test out the long-sleeve convoy tee and let us know!

Most Versatile Merino Travel Shirt

Ridge Merino Men’s Solstice Hoodie

87% Merino, 13% Nylon | Ultralight (145 gsm) | 17.5 microns | Relaxed fit | Seasonal colors | $$$

Ridge Merino Solstice Hoodie

Pros: Cloud-like drape & feel | Oversized hood is versatile | Ultralight yet surprisingly durable

Cons: Arm length is long due to thumb holes | Slight wrinkles after several uses

If you’ve read our reviews before, you may know how much we love gear from Ridge Merino. They always have some of the best-fitting, high-quality wool apparel, all at a solid price. So, it’s only ‘fitting’ to include their Solstice Hoodie as our “Most Versatile” Merino wool travel shirt.

I know it sounds strange, but the Ridge Merino Solstice Hoodie is the swiss-army knife of travel shirts. Honestly, it’s the ‘key ‘to my travel capsule wardrobe. The oversize hood is an excellent eye cover for an airplane snooze. The ultralight fabric weighs next to nothing if it’s in your carry-on or worn as a base layer in chilly climates.

Plus, I can acceptably wear it anywhere. It’s got a bit of that high-end outdoor style that does not look out of place in an urban setting. Oh yeah, and it’s relatively affordable – unlike anything at the airport.

Anyways, I’m not going to dive into too many tech specs with this one. You only need to know that I never travel without my Solstice Hoodie. Period.

Best Merino Wool Button-Down

Western Rise Limitless Merino Button-Down

53% Merino, 47% Polyester | Lightweight (175 gsm) | Slim fit | Gray (light & dark) | $$$$

Western Rise Limitless Merino Button Down Shirt White

Pros: Classic yet casual style | Fantastic all-around performance | Packs down small

Cons: Wish there was more Merino wool | Limited color options

Western Rise knows that you may need more than a simple wool tee while traveling. They created this functional Limitless Merino wool button-down to cater to all your travel needs. The design is professional yet fashionable. And, you just can’t beat the comfort of Merino wool!

“Looks like an Oxford, is more comfortable than a t-shirt, and outperforms your activewear.”

Yet, if you want a 100% wool shirt, you’re out of luck with this one. The overall material construction is about 50-50 Merino-polyester. While this does help with the long-term durability, we tend to find it not as comfy as a pure wool button-down.

Still, the Western Rise Limitless Merino button-down gets the job done when you’re on the road. You won’t stink, you won’t wrinkle (as much), and your body temperature will stay regulated. Now, that’s all you can ask for in a travel shirt, right?

Best Merino Wool Polo For Travel

Woolx Summit Polo

85% Merino, 12% Nylon, 3% Spandex | Lightweight (150 gsm) | Slim fit | Black, Blue, & Tan | $$$

Woolx Summit Polo

Pros: Comfy raglan sleeve construction | Simple, classic style | Mix of performance & fashion

Cons: Attracts lint, pet hair, etc. | Sizing inconsistencies

Honestly, I’ve never been a fan of the casual business aesthetic. Perhaps it’s because I was forced to dress in bland-colored khakis and a navy polo for nearly a dozen years. Still, there are some situations where a t-shirt is just too informal, so that’s when I reach for my Woolx summit polo.

This slim-fit polo is crafted from ultralight 150-gsm fabric, so you don’t sweat when running to your gate. It’s like a performance tee with a collar, which is an underrated combination. Plus, since it comes in three distinct colors, there’s a style that’ll match any pair of work slacks. That way, I can look – and feel – good if I’m traveling for work.

Woolx has found the proper combination of long-term performance and style, especially for those always on the go. And when it comes to the fabric itself, I really like the overall durability. The 85% Merino blend is comfortable and stretchy, but the corespun synthetics add extra strength.

Best Merino Wool Shirt For Hot Climates

Icebreaker Cool-Lite Merino Sphere II Crew

60% TENCEL, 40% Merino | Featherweight (125 gsm) | Regular Fit | 8 colors | $$

Icebreaker Merino Sphere Crew Tee Light Gray

Pros: Breathable, ‘featherlight’ fabric | Offset shoulder seam = less chafing | Drop-tail hem

Cons: Material may be see-through | Fabric may wrinkle over time

If you’ve read our best Men’s Merino t-shirt review, you’ll know that the Icebreaker Tech-Lite tee topped our list. However, we think Icebreaker has a better t-shirt option for tropical travel: the Cool-Lite Merino Sphere crew.

Many ultralight Merino shirts have a thickness of at least 150 gsm. Yet the Icebreaker Cool-Lite tee is even more ultralight, coming in only 125 gsm. And sure, you may have long-term durability concerns (since we do too). Still, Icebreaker has an excellent warranty policy, and the fabric is corespun with TENCEL for extra strength (and sustainability). So, in reality, there’s not too much to worry about.

I find it a bit ironic that a brand named Icebreaker has one of the ‘coolest’ Merino wool tees out there. But that’s the thing about irony: it’s true! And if you like wearing sleeves in hot climates (like me), Icebreaker has a long-sleeve version, too.

Best Merino Wool Shirt For Cold Climates

Smartwool 250 Merino Base Layer Crew

100% Merino | Midweight (250 gsm) | Slim Fit | Multiple colors and patterns available | $$$$

Smartwool Men's 250 Baselayer Crew

Pros: Industry-leading performance | Engineered fit & updated features | Versatile design

Cons: Slightly more expensive than alternatives | Not suitable in warmer weather

In these review lists, I always return to the Smartwool 250 Merino base layer. It’s perfect for any cold-weather traveler as a layering piece and even a standalone shirt. I understand it sounds biased toward Smartwool, but after being in the Merino game for several years, I can say their products are legit.

The functional midweight baselayer is tight enough that a mid-layer won’t bunch but relaxed enough to be worn as an everyday shirt – especially in chillier climates. For example, if you throw on this shirt with a packable down jacket, you’ll be cozy in below-freezing temperatures.

Honestly, it’s my go-to utility layer when I’m backpacking, and the same performance qualities transfer to the travel world. And, since Smartwool consistently releases new colors and patterns, you may want to grab one before you get ‘frozen out ‘of a great deal!

Most Stylish Merino Wool Travel Shirt

Wool & Prince 130 Button-Down Shirt

100% Merino | Ultralight (130 gsm) | 17.5-18.5 Microns | Classic fit | 12+ styles | $$$$

Wool and Prince Button Down

Pros: Classic, professional look | Dozens of patterns | Multiple fabric thicknesses available

Cons: Fabric doesn’t ‘feel’ entirely durable | A bit more expensive than other options

You can still wear Merino wool even if you need to dress to the nines! A perfect example is this stylish button-up from Wool&Prince. You get the high-end luxury vibe plus the enhanced travel properties of Merino wool. I would even go on a limb and crown it the perfect wool button-down!

The one thing about Wool & Prince that makes them elite in the Merino world is their sheer selection of styles and fabric weights. Their classic Merino button-down comes in all shades of blue, gray, checkered, plaid, etc. Plus, you can get a button-down in various fabric thicknesses: 130 gsm, 170 gsm, 210 gsm, or blended with linen!

Think about it like this: there isn’t a professional outfit or classy look that can’t be achieved with one of these Wool & Prince Merino wool shirts.

And while I don’t pack mine on outdoor vacations, I always have one while city-hopping. In all honesty, it’s probably the best-looking piece of Merino wool travel gear that I own. And if you don’t want to take my word for it, check it out for yourself below!

Best Wool Shirt For Adventure Travel

Ibex 24-Hour Merino Wool Long Sleeve Crew

100% Merino | Lightweight (165 gsm) | 19.5 microns | Regular Fit | 5 Colors available | $$$

Ibex 24 Hour Long Sleeve Crew

Pros: Designed for all-around performance | Versatile layering | Fantastic moisture management

Cons: Need something thicker for freezing temps | Micron fibers could be finer

I love adventure travel. The thrill of exploring the outdoors in an unfamiliar country has always appealed to me. But one major issue I’ve always had is packing for the travel and adventure parts of the trip. Usually, that means two separate bags and lots of disorganization. However, I’ve learned that Merino wool serves both the travel and adventure roles during my trips. And one piece of gear that does this exceptionally well is the Ibex 24-hour Long-Sleeve Crew.

The reason is that I can wear the 24-hour crew for 24 hours! So, whether I’m killing time on a layover or jetting off for a foreign backpacking trip, I know I have a versatile, functional piece of gear for wherever the road leads me. It’s sort of like a safety blanket but much more comfortable.

The 24-hour long-sleeve crew is an essential piece for any one-bagger. So, I won’t bore you with the tech specs since I listed them above. Moreover, if you like the design but are looking for a different style, check out other Merino wool gear from Ibex.

Best Value Merino Wool Travel Shirt For Men

Merino.tech 100% Merino Wool Tee

100% Merino | Lightweight (165 gsm) | 17.5 microns | Athletic fit | Multiple colors | $

Pros: Excellent price-to-performance ratio | Surprisingly comfy fabric | Multiple colors available

Cons: Pilling experienced in laundry | Long-term durability concerns

Yes, I know some of these Merino wool travel shirts are pricey. Still, there is affordable gear out there without sacrificing quality. One of my favorite brands that fit this description is Merino.tech. And their basic Merino tee comes at a solid price, giving you just enough money to buy the seat with a bit of extra legroom.

Personally, I have not worn this tee since I have found alternative options. However, my wife loves the women’s Merino.tech tee, and I feel the men’s shirt is similar. The fabric is ultrasoft (17.5-micron fibers), and the lightweight 165-gsm material is breathable.

So, if this shirt is so great, why do I have it as a ‘value’ pick? Well, it’s because Merino.tech offers an excellent price point. And sure, I have long-term durability questions. But to travel on a budget, I don’t think you will find a better choice for an affordable Merino wool travel tee.

Final Note: Best Merino Wool Travel Shirts For Men

Base layers are a bit weird. For one, you want to be comfortable and warm, but you don’t want the fabric to be too bulky that you can’t layer above it. It’s a world of personal preference based and every shirt has its own unique. So, I’ll do my best to lay out the best merino wool base layer for men, especially when it comes to specific activities.

There’s no need to bore you with the mundane details (we’ll leave those until the end). So, let’s get right into a quick Merino wool base layer buying guide, our review considerations, and some of our favorite men’s base layers for various occasions.

Disclosure: To maintain genuineness and authenticity, Merino Wool Gear DOES NOT sponsor products. However, as an affiliate member, we may earn a small commission from qualifying purchases.

Quick Merino Wool Base Layer Buying Guide

Before you go investing your hard-earned money on a high-quality Merino base layer, you should briefly understand what traits to explore. Remember, unless you’re thru-hiking or one-bagging it across the world, you will only be wearing your base layer for specific situations. For instance, you probably won’t be wearing it to the office – unless your like me and work wherever life takes you.

Anyways, don’t get too excited and throw away your savings on Merino wool without doing your due diligence first.

Comfort

It doesn’t matter how great a base layer looks; your top buying consideration should be comfort and fit. With Merino wool, you don’t have to worry about itchiness or irritation, as it’s a tremendous next-to-skin fabric. That is to say, if you get irritated by stitching, look for products with flatlock seams.

Temperature Regulation

It’s not always about warmth when it comes to a quality base layer. What you should look for is how well the material regulates your microclimate. So, it should keep you cool when it’s warm and warm when it’s cool. Oh yeah, and dry. Typically, the higher fabric weights are more heated but less breathable.

Functionality

You don’t want to spend a bunch on a base layer and only use it for specific cases (or maybe you do). Either way, you should understand if your shirt is made for particular activities (winter sports, etc.) and can also be worn as a standalone piece. As a result, check out the overall style and fit to better gauge your decision.

Durability

Lastly, you’ll want to make sure that your base layer lasts you a long time. I mean, some of these things cost over $100; they should last you nearly forever. However, pure Merino wool apparel is known to be delicate if not cared for properly. You can still get good strength and durability from them, but blended fabrics are more robust.

Pros: “Gold Standard” of base layers | Versatile | Engineered fit & updated features

Cons: Not suitable for hot weather | A bit on the expensive side

I’ve always found the term ‘best’ to be a bit subjective. But, when it comes to industry-leading Merino wool base layers, the gold medal goes to the Smartwool Merino 250 Base Layer.

There are little frills, but this shirt is packed with features. The 100% Merino wool construction is soft and comfortable, while the 250 gsm thickness hits the warmth-to-weight sweet spot. Moreover, there are flatlock seams and engineered shoulder panels to reduce seam irritation.

And it’s not just the quality of the fabric; the fit has been engineered over the years for better functionality. Smartwool has trimmed down the bagginess of their clothing. As a result, they have created a slimmer, more ‘layerable’ fit. They even added a bunch of colors and styles so that you can wear this long sleeve as a standalone piece.

On the other hand, I must lay out some of the negative aspects of this Smartwool Base Layer. For one, the midweight fabric may be a bit thick in the summer, so you may not be able to use this year-round. Secondly, it’s a tad expensive, even for base layer standards. But I still think it’s worth every penny.

Above all, Smartwool is a leader in the Merino wool industry, and their 250 base layer lives up to their reputation. If you can check one out today or even want to look at their similar 150 base layer – you can do so below.

Pros: Minimal seam irritation | Fantastic versatility | Breathable yet protective

Cons: A bit thin for frigid temperatures | Delicate laundry process

Icebreaker is quite possibly one of my favorite Merino wool companies. Not only do they make quality products, but they take their environmental responsibility very seriously. Likewise, Icebreaker provides comprehensive transparency reports so that consumers can peak into all aspects of their business. Let’s take a lesson from them in honesty to offer you our silver medal base layer for men: the Icebreaker Merino 200 Oasis Base Layer Crewe.

I’ll start with the Merino wool material itself. Icebreaker crafts their Oasis crew with 100% pure Merino wool, sourced ethically through ZQ Merino. The fabric density is 200 GSM (hence the Oasis 200 name), which I consider lightweight. Subsequently, it’s perfect for cool to warm conditions, but you may need something a bit thicker if you are outside in the winter.

If the high-performing material isn’t enticing, then Icebreaker’s engineered fit and construction may do the trick. Across the entire garment, they use flatlock seams to reduce irritation. Moreover, the shoulder seams are offset with gussets, so there is no top seam on your collar bone. As a result, it’s perfect if you’re wearing a backpack for long distances. In addition, the back of the shirt is a bit longer than the front to provide a thin layer of warmth to your lower back and give you easy access to your pockets up front.

The one thing I think could be improved with this base layer is the overall durability. However, if you’re caring and laundering it properly, it honestly shouldn’t be an issue.

To sum up, if you’re a trail runner, cross trainer, or just want an incredible three-season base layer, make sure to check out the Icebreaker Merino 200 Oasis Crewe!

Best Value Merino Wool Base Layer For Men

Meriwool Men’s Midweight Base Layer

Functionality

85%

Durability

70%

Pros: Extremely affordable | Snug fit layers well | Mix of warmth & breathability

Cons: Shoulder seams may be irritating | User-reported durability issues

Functional, comfortable, and affordable, the Meriwool Men’s Midweight Base Layer is an exceptional piece for adventurers on a budget. It costs about 2/3 of some of these other base layers cost but is still around the same quality. Therefore, you can spend a bit more on those uber-expensive ultralight sleeping bags and cuben fiber tents!

I like how this base layer drapes against my body as the snug, elastic-like fit (characteristic of Merino wool) feels super soft against the skin. The 18.5-micron fibers are about the industry standard in thickness, so you are getting the same comfort as you would from similar base layers at a fraction of the price. Finally, the tight fit makes this shirt great for layering, providing a non-bulk, annoyance-free base.

I recommend wearing the Meriwool base layer anywhere from temperatures below freezing to about 55-60 degrees. Although, I don’t think this shirt is suitable for warmer conditions, as the 250 GSM is a bit thicker (in the midweight class) yet still surprisingly breathable.

However, nothing is perfect. I would be doing you a disservice of talking up this base layer without playing Devil’s advocate. Firstly, I feel like a minor design flaw within the shoulder seams causes slight irritation. It’s honestly not that big of a deal unless you are wearing a heavy, heavy backpack. Next, some users have reported durability issues, and small holes are forming. I haven’t seen that myself, but luckily, Meriwool has a solid warranty if any problems are found.

To sum up, I wouldn’t call the Meriwool Base Layer “budget,” but more of a value buy. It’s fantastic to sleep in while you’re tucked in your sleeping bag or layered under your fleece during chilly weather. For the complete set, check out their base layer bottoms, too!

Pros: Keeps you cool & protected | High-performance features | Produced sustainably

Cons: Not suitable for frigid environments | XL+ sizing not always available

Patagonia is the quintessential brand for outdoor gear. Their commitment to the environment and ethics is almost second-to-none within the industry. They pay close attention to their impact and adjust even the seemingly smallest of details to lessen their carbon footprint. And, their newly release Capilene Cool Merino base layer exudes their expertise and attention to detail.

The lightweight wool and polyester blend provides the best of both worlds in breathability and durability. At a fabric thickness of 125 GSM, this Patagonia base layer is one of the thinnest on our list but can still take a beating. It provides enhances moisture-wicking and breathability features, keeping you cool even in humid conditions. Moreover, the Merino wool is sourced from the Responsible Wool Standard, meaning it’s harvested ethically and sustainably (we wouldn’t expect anything less from Patagonia).

However, it’s not just the fabric itself that makes the Capilene® Cool Merino Shirt our favorite base layer for hiking. Patagonia has added unique engineering features into the overall construction. There are side vents for additional airflow and even a drop-tail hem for a better fit. In addition, the sleeves are designed in such a way to improve mobility and reduce rubbing. In other words, Patagonia thought of everything to enhance your comfort.

On the other hand, I feel like this shirt isn’t the best for highly frigid conditions. Sure, you can add more than one midlayer, but there are other products available that are more suited for winter hiking.

Note: If you are looking for larger sizes, you should continue to check in with Patagonia for availability as XL+ shirts tend to go quickly. You can also view Patagonia’s size charts here.

To sum up, I genuinely feel like you can’t go wrong with Patagonia. The Capilene® Cool Merino Shirt drapes so comfortably on your body. Also, it is one of the highest-performing base layers on the market!

If that sounds a little farfetched, don’t worry, Proof put a 72-hour vlog showing how well this LS tee stands up to the wear-and-tear of adventure travel.

The Merino wool blended construction offers extra durability on top of the unique odor-resistant properties. As for comfort, you aren’t going to get much more luxurious. The 16.5-micron fibers create a silky smooth next-to-skin feel while the engineered design minimizes any irritation. It’s definitely one of the comfiest base layers on our list.

Above all, we love how Proof is transparent about their sourcing methods for their LS Merino base layer. They get all their raw wool from Global Merino, an industry-leading supplier. Proof even goes as far as to list the three farms in New Zealand where their Merino wool comes from. Seriously, they even provide the coordinates! Now that is what we call transparency.

To sum up, the Proof 72-Hour Merino LS tee is an excellent choice for digital nomads, adventure seekers, and every other type of traveler. Are you looking for a base layer to keep you toasty during the coldest winter days? Perhaps you’re trekking into the Sierras and want to be protected during a flash blizzard. Well, then the Minus33 Yukon Men’s Expedition Wool Crew may be your best option.

Designed with pure 400 GSM Merino wool, the Yukon baselayer provides a thick layer of warmth and protection while you conquer the elements. This shirt was designed to withstand the brutal and wintery conditions on New Hampshire’s Mount Washington. In fact, Minus33 claims that their product has been tested in the harshest conditions on the planet and still worked exceptionally. Explorers have used the Yukon layer in the arctic, antarctic, and even at the summit of Mount Everest.

Aside from the protection the Yukon base layer offers, it is one of the most comfortable shirts on this list. The ultra-soft, 18.5-micron Merino wool fibers feel luxurious against your skin. In addition, the flatlock seams and tagless interior reduce irritation so that you stay itch-free while battling the winter elements.

Although I have a few qualms which may just be trivial to you. Firstly, I’m not a big fan of the price point, but hey, you’ve got to pay big for performance. Also, I wish that Minus33 would add more color options other than black (as of October 2022, they also navy & olive) . To me, these issues are minor, but problems nonetheless.

To sum up, if you’re a winter explorer, you should be packing the Minus33 Men’s Yukon Expedition Base Layer in your pack (or even as a mid-layer). Even though we only focus on tops in this review, you can complement the outfit with the Minus33 Katmai Expedition Bottoms for full-body coverage.

Cons: Length a bit long for shorter people | Slight wrinkles form after several use

A hoodie in the summer! Are you kidding me?

Listen, I know this isn’t your typical base layer, but hear me out: the Ridge Merino Solstice Sun Hoodie is 100% legit. Seriously, I’m wearing mine now (in hunter green) as I’m typing.

The super ultralight, 145 GSM fabric feels so minimal against your skin. It drapes nicely over the body, hugging the right places and promoting a full range of motion. The thin material does feel delicate, but Ridge Merino’s mForce technology helps to improve durability.

When I pair the Solstice Hoodie with a mid-layer fleece and packable down jacket, it provides excellent 4-season protection. In addition, the oversized hood can even fit climbing or ski helmets if you need some added warmth. Oh yeah, I can’t forget the flatlock seams and thumbholes. It’s truly an incredible and unique hoodie.

However, we have to mention the good with the bad. As a vertically challenged man, I find the length to be a bit long (even for a size small). But, it’s not that long, just a personal preference. Also, make sure to tie a knot in the hood strings, or you will be consumed with wiggling the line back through the hood after laundry day.

Above all, the Ridge Merino Solstice Hoodie is super functional. You can wear it as a base layer on the trail, a hoodie at home, or even as a standalone piece to the grocery store. Make sure to check one out today!

Pros: Fantastic temperature regulation | Improved technical design | Dozens of colors available

Cons: Neck hole a bit snug when zipped | One of the more pricey base layers

Helly Hansen is a well-renowned outdoor apparel brand, and they have done it again with this base layer. The unique piece is composed of both Merino wool and synthetic polypropylene. The exterior of the 1/2 zip is made of Merino, offering excellent temperature regulation and comfort benefits. On the other hand, the interior is made of synthetic LIFA, which helps to wick moisture away from the skin. The 2-in-1 construction is genuinely one-of-a-kind.

Moreover, not only does the blended material help with moisture management, but it also improves overall durability. Which, if you’re hiking through the woods in a sea of twigs, bark, and plants, is a must. Even if you aren’t out on the trail, the high-performance fabric feels protective.

However, we feel like the overall comfort level of the Helly Hansen LIFA Merino base layer could be improved a tad. The drape is okay, as the athletic fit helps in the layering department. But, it can feel a bit tight as compared with the other base layers we tried. The sleeves and neck hole openings are slightly small, so you may want to size up if you have massive arms (or traps).

Still, we feel that Helly Hansen did an excellent job constructing this base layer for outdoor enthusiasts. It’s warm, soft, durable, quick-drying, and moderately comfortable; everything you want out of a protective next-to-skin layer. Sure, it may be on the pricier side of the base layer spectrum, but I can honestly say it’s worth every penny.

Pros: Excellent price-to-quality | Simple, no-frills construction | Several fabric weights

Cons: Potential durability issues | Sleeve length short for taller folks

You may not have heard of Merino.tech, but they are quietly making a name for themselves in the Merino wool world. Their products are all about affordability and comfort. They are doing a fantastic job of staying true to their principles. The 100% Merino wool long sleeve base layer is a perfect choice for those looking to transfer their wardrobe to more Merino clothing, but also don’t want to shell out a lot of money.

The fabric itself is composed of superfine Merino wool fibers of 17.5 microns, so you know it’s going to feel luxurious when worn as a base layer. However, some users have reported the material to feel itchy at first. I haven’t experienced this issue, but it is something I have to note.

In addition, we love this Merino.tech base layer because it comes in several colors and fabric weights. You could get a dark gray, lightweight (165 GSM) for summer hiking and a green heavyweight (340 GSM) base layer for any of your winter adventures. There are tons of and thickness combinations available, so I’m sure you’ll find one that suits all your needs.

Finally, I can’t say enough about the affordability of this base layer (and all of Merino.tech’s products, for that matter). They have a whole line of affordable next-to-skin clothing for those of us a lot in the bank. Therefore, if you want to wear more Merino but still pay your bills on time, Merino.tech should be your go-to men’s base layer.

Final Note About The Best Merino Wool Base Layers For Men

There’s nothing that will ruin a day on the mountain more than being cold – well, maybe besides long chair lift lines. Your body needs to be at the proper temperature to stay on the slopes and out of the lodge. The best way to do this is by investing in a reliable pair of thermals or long underwear. This underwear should be cozy, warm, functional, and even able to handle a few wipeouts. But, how do you choose the best long underwear for skiing?

Well, let’s hit the slopes, and find out!

Strap on your boots so we can explore the ten best long underwear for skiing for both men and women!

Disclaimer: To maintain genuineness and authenticity, Merino Wool Gear DOES NOT sponsor products. Yet as an Amazon Associate, we may earn a commission from qualifying purchases.

Long Underwear Buying Considerations

Insulation

If you’re hitting the slopes, you’re going to need to stay warm (no, duh, right?). Maintaining a proper temperature is not merely about material thickness, although there is a strong correlation between them. It also has to do with the breathability and moisture-wicking ability of the material since you will most likely be sweating as you’re riding tips up through the fresh powder. If you are sweating too much, your skin will cool down, and you’ll be freezing. Remember that the thicker the fabric weight, the warmer it will be, and the less breathable.

Comfort

Apart from being warm, you should look for long underwear that’s tight but not restrictive. It should be supportive of all the right parts. If it’s too snug, you’re going to be super uncomfortable as you try to maneuver around the mountain. Still, if it’s too loose, you may get bunching and clinging in all the wrong places.

On top of the tightness, you should want your bottoms to feel smooth on your skin. Not only does this have to do with the fabric makeup, but also the stitching and waistband construction. Look for clothing with flatlock seams and a durable waistband to avoid any unnecessary irritation.

Length

Long underwear does not always mean it has to go down to your ankles. In fact, when you wear an ankle-length base layer in addition to a heavy sock may make it more uncomfortable when you try to strap on your boots. Also, boot bunching may be more than just irritation, as it can be a prime chafing area and may reduce the blood flow to your feet. We aren’t saying that full-length underwear is not great (actually, we prefer it), but the overall length is definitely something to consider.

Function

Combining insulation, comfort, and length, we have the most critical factor in long underwear for skiing: function. You should look for bottoms that provide you with the best practicality for your style. We mean that the leading factor in purchasing skiing underwear is that they keep you on the mountain. We’ve come up with a simple rule: the best underwear are ones that you never feel.

Merino Vs. Synthetic Long Underwear For Skiing

We’d like to note that we are a website dedicated to Merino Wool Gear (hence the name), but we want to be objective with our reviews. It’s essential to look at the positives and negatives of Merino Wool as compared to other synthetic long underwear.

Merino wool is one of the best fabrics for keeping your microclimate – the area between your clothing and skin – warm. It wicks away moisture from your skin and holds your traps air and water vapor within the material. Merino also has odor-resistant properties, is incredibly soft on your skin, and can be versatile in any environment. Some of the downsides are that it can be pricey and can have durability issues if not cared for properly.

Synthetic materials like nylon and polyester are incredibly breathable and quick-drying, which is excellent if you wipe out and get snow up your pant leg. They tend to be more durable and less expensive than Merino wool, as well. While synthetics don’t always provide the best insulation, it’s often enough to keep you warm. As the material is made from petroleum, it’s hydrophobic, meaning that it repels water and attracts oils. Thus, the smelly, oily secretions from your body tend to linger in the fabric. On top of that, it’s very environmentally friendly.

What’s Best For Skiing?

The decision of which long underwear material you should wear on the slopes is ultimately up to you. If you favor durability and a little bit of extra cash in your wallet, you may want to be on team synthetic. But we honestly prefer Merino, as we believe temperature regulation and comfort are the most crucial underwear factors while skiing.

We will focus mainly on the top Merino long underwear for a day on the slopes due to our preferences. Still, we’ll also go over some reliable non-Merino options for those of you who prefer synthetics. Let’s get started!

Icebreaker Oasis 200 Leggings Mens and Womens in Gray

Men’s Oasis Leggings | Women’s Oasis Leggings

Pros: Fantastic warmth-to-weight ratio | High performance | Sleek and stylish

Cons: User-reported fabric issues | The waistband is a bit snug

View Icebreaker Sizing Charts & Brand Review

Style meets functionality with Icebreaker’s Merino 200 Oasis Thermal Leggings for men and women. The 100% Merino wool jersey fabric is extra soft on your skin and offers ample breathability to regulate your temperature.

We love the choice of midweight, 200 GSM fabric density as it is sufficient enough to keep you warm in an ever-fluctuating alpine environment. Also, we feel that these Oasis leggings are one of the most multifunctional options on our list, as you can wear them as a standalone piece.

Although no pair of long underwear is perfect, we’ve seen a couple of reported issues. Some users have claimed that the waistband feels too tight, and others say that the fabric wears over time. It appears as the former may be due to personal preference, and the latter to improper care, as we have not experienced these issues personally.

Overall, we feel that any clothing crafted by Icebreaker is worth its weight in gold. Okay, maybe that’s a bit of a stretch, but Icebreaker should still be crowned co-king of the mountain with their Oasis 200 Thermal Leggings.

Smartwool 250 Base Layer Bottoms

100% Merino | 250 gsm | Slim fit | Price: $$$$

Smartwool Classic Thermal Bottoms Men and Women

Smartwool Men’s Thermal Bottoms | Smartwool Women’s Thermal Bottoms

Pros: Excellent thermoregulation | Design improves comfort | Trusted outdoor brand

Cons: May stretch with improper care | Relatively slow-drying

View Smartwool Sizing Charts & Company Profile

Our co-best pair of Merino wool long underwear is none other than the Smartwool Merino 250 Bottoms. They are a bit thicker than their co-champion, making them slightly better in the warmth category. Still, despite being 250 GSM, these Merino bottoms are surprisingly breathable, offering plenty of temperature regulation as you navigate the mountain all day long.

The actual reason that we love these long underwear is Smartwool’s attention to detail within the design. It’s the little things like a thick Merino-lined waistband for maximum comfort and garment-wide flatlock seams to reduce irritation. Smartwool even redesigned their back gusset pattern due to user feedback, allowing for a much more supportive fit.

The fit is not too tight either, so that you can wear these bottoms as a mid-layer. But be careful as the fabric may deform over time with improper care.

Overall, it’s a no-brainer to put a trusted Merino brand like Smartwool as the co-gold medalist when it comes to the best long underwear for skiing.

Note: If you’re looking for a similar construction and reputation as the Smartwool 250 Bottoms, but don’t need as thick of fabric, check out their 150 bottoms. It’s the same design but doesn’t offer as much warmth protection.

Best ¾ Length Merino Long Underwear For Skiing

Ridge Merino Men’s Aspect 3/4 Bottoms

84% Merino, 16% Nylon | 180 gsm | 18.5 microns | Slim-to-Athletic fit | Price: $$

Ridge Merino 3/4 Aspect Bottoms

Pros: Excellent breathability | Comparatively more durable | Relatively inexpensive

Cons: Not as warm as other options | May be tight around larger calves

View Ridge Merino Sizing Charts & Company Profile

Suppose you’re sick of the sock-underwear-boot irritation combo but still want the protection provided with long underwear. In that case, the Ridge Merino 3/4-Length bottoms may be your best bet. They offer a supportive but not too restrictive fit. Their 180 GSM fabric provides sufficient warmth for sunny days on the mountain.

One aspect we love about the Aspect – and a lot of Ridge Merino clothing in general – is the dedication to the clothing’s longevity. By itself, Merino wool is sometimes too delicate to withstand the normal wear and tear of long skiing underwear. Ridge Merino utilizes an industry-leading (m)Force Merino technology, spinning the soft woolen fibers around a stronger nylon thread to improve durability and longevity. You get all the benefits of Merino and minimize some of the disadvantages in the process.

The calf holds are great for these specific thermals, but they may be a bit tight for those with tree trunks for legs. Also, for shorter people, the 3/4 length is more like 7/8, so keep that in mind.

Still, you truly can’t beat the price-to-quality ratio that Ridge Merino provides with this skiing underwear. They may be 3/4 length, but they are 1/2 the price of most of the competitors. We highly suggest the Ridge Merino Aspect leggings if you want to feel comfortable on the mountain without breaking the bank.

Minus33 has crafted a simplistic yet aesthetically-pleasing pair of ladies leggings with these Osceola Midweight Wool 3/4 Bottoms. The 235 GSM fabric will keep your legs warm on the mountain but still allow for plenty of room to breathe.

The Osceola leggings’ minimalistic design may appear basic at first, but Minus33 has put so much detail into every inch of them. The waistband is covered and rises higher, sitting around the belly button. The gusset construction and flatlock seams reduce irritation and chafing. On top of that, the 3/4 inseam reduces any annoyance from “boot bulk.”

It’s important to note that these Merino bottoms are not as tight-fitting as many of the other pairs on our list. They have a much more relaxed fit, which is why some users have reported that they run a bit large. Minus33 suggests that you size down if you are looking for a more athletic fit.

Overall, we think the Osceola Minus33 3/4 bottoms aren’t just a fantastic pair of long underwear on the slopes. They also work well in the yoga studio, CrossFit gym, or even just lounging around the house.

The price of lift tickets is high, so if you want to hang out all day on the mountain, you will have to cut back the cost somewhere else. With the Meriwool Merino 250 Base Layer Bottoms, you’re able to save a little bit of money without sacrificing warmth. It’s the perfect combination for a fun, wallet-friendly day on the slopes.

The 18.5-micron, 100% Merino wool feels super soft on the skin, while the 250 GSM fabric provides excellent temperature regulation. At the end of a long day, they won’t even stink either. You can use them again when you conquer the fresh powder the next day!

The fit is a little baggier than we expected, and for us, it seemed to be a bit tighter around our thighs than it was our waist. We didn’t see this as an issue, but it’s just a feeling we weren’t used to. According to some users, the fabric itself stretches with heavy use, but that’s typical with pure Merino clothing.

In the end, the Meriwool 250 Base Layer Bottoms are super-efficient in what they are meant to do: keeping your legs – and bank account – protected. Check out the variety of color options for both men & women below.

Skiing in the backcountry can be exhilarating. It’s like you are a polar explorer, testing your limits against both the beauty and brutality of nature to find that perfect line. Venturing into these uncharted territories often means unknown weather conditions. That’s where the Katmai and Kenai Expedition bottoms by Minus33 come in handy.

These Merino wool bottoms have a fabric thickness of 400 GSM, nearly twice as much as any of the other pairs on our list. For reference, that’s about six pieces of paper thick. You know they will provide excellent insulation, but the surprising thing is that they are also breathable despite their thickness. The soft, 18.5-micron fibers also feel super soft on your skin. The combination of protection and comfort sometimes makes it feel like you aren’t wearing any long underwear at all!

The fit itself is a bit relaxed, which has led some users to report sizing issues, but it’s not anything we have seen. Also, they are the most expensive pair of thermals on our list. But, with features like flatlock seams, structured gussets, a covered waistband, and 400 GSM of insulation, we feel like they are priced appropriately.

So, if you want to take an expedition into the unknown, make sure to stay comfortable and protected with these Minus33 Expedition long underwear.

Best Non-Merino Long Underwear For Skiing

Arc’teryx Rho LT Bottoms

Torrent: 84% Polyester, 16% Elastane | 175 gsm | Next-To-Skin fit | Price: $$$

Men’s Rho LT Bottoms | Women’s Rho LT Bottoms

Pros: Comfortable & snug | Unexpectedly warm | Excellent durability

Cons: Somewhat “staticy” | Limited versatility

In these reviews, we typically only focus on Merino wool gear (hence the site name). But, we feel like we would be doing you a disservice by writing an article about the best long underwear for skiing and not include the Rho LT from Arc’teryx. These super lightweight leggings are shockingly warm, and they hug your legs in all the right places.

With a well-established outdoor brand like Arc’teryx, you know you’ll be buying a finely engineered product, and the Rho LTs are no exception. The Torrent fleece fabric (84% polyester and 16% elastane – is brushed during manufacturing to give a soft next-to-skin feel and speed up moisture transfer away from your body. The elastic stretch and articulated pattern offer a fit that works with you as you move rather than against you. Heck, there is even a well-designed crotch gusset and zipper pocket!

As we try to remain objective with our reviews, it’s important to detail some of the cons. There have been reports that due to the Rho LT’s tight fit and brushed fleece, they offer limited breathability. These bottoms are also on the Merino spectrum’s pricier side, but we think the price point is fair with the sheer amount of extra features.

Overall though, the Arc’teryx Rho LT Bottoms are one of the most form-fitting, high-performing pair of thermals that we’ve tried. That’s why they make our list as the top pair of non-merino long underwear for skiing for both men and women.

Best Long Underwear For Skiing: Honorable Mentions

Ortovox 185 Rock’N’Wool Short Pant

100% Tasmanian Merino | 185 gsm |19 microns | Athletic fit | Price: $$$$

Ortovox Mens and Womens Rock N Wool Short Pant

Men’s Rock’N’Wool Pants | Women’s Rock’N’ Wool Pants

Pros: Great breathability | Excellent fit | Quick-drying

Cons: Not the warmest | Relatively Expensive

These Rock’N’Wool short pants also have excellent design features that hinge on functionality. The athletic fit is not too loose or too tight, offering the right amount of support in all the right places. They hug your thighs and calves just ever so slightly but have a relaxed area around the knees for improved mobility.

The Ortovox Rock’N’Wool Short Pant also offers a stellar warmth-to-weight ratio. Still, they aren’t the warmest pair of long underwear that we’ve seen. In our opinion, they are best suited for spring skiing when temperature fluctuations aren’t as high. However, they do offer excellent breathability and relatively quick-drying than some of the other pairs of Merino long underwear on our list.

Outdoor Research Alpine Onset Bottoms

47% Merino /47% Polyester / 6% Elastane | 150 gsm | Tight fit | Price: $$

Outdoor Research Onset Alpine Merino Bottoms

Men’s Alpine Onset Bottoms | Women’s Alpine Onset Bottoms

Pros: Super lightweight | Breathable | Quick-drying

Cons: Not for extreme temps | Reported seam issues

Suppose you are typically toasty in your snow pants and only need a small extra layer of protection. In that case, the Outdoor Research Alpine Onset Merino Bottomss may be your best choice. They are super lightweight and have excellent breathability properties. The fabric is a blend of recycled polyester and Merino wool, making them a perfect eco-friendly skier option.

The main issue (if you can call it that) we have with the Enigma bottoms is that they only have a fabric thickness of 150 GSM. In other words, they are not ideal for ultracold summit conditions. On top of that, some users have reported minor seam irritation and potential fabric snagging issues. Still, if you are looking for an ultralight pair of long underwear that still holds its weight, then check out the Outdoor Research Apline Onset Bottoms.

Patagonia Capilene Midweight Bottoms

100 % Capilene (recycled polyester) | 147 gsm | Relaxed fit | Price: $$

Patagonia Capilene Midweight Bottoms Mens Womens

Men’s Capilene Bottoms | Women’s Capilene Bottoms

Pros: Weighs next to nothing | Relatively Inexpensive | Great Breathability

Cons: Fit a bit too relaxed | Reported durability issues

It’s tough to make a list of skiing gear and not include Patagonia. Their midweight Capilene bottoms are an excellent, budget-friendly choice for skiers of any skill level. Even though they are incredibly lightweight, they still offer adequate insulation against moderate alpine conditions through diamond-like shapes in the fabric that trap in hot air.

One issue we’ve seen with the Capilene midweight bottoms is that they feel too relaxed and saggy. We don’t 100% get the proper support that we would like from a pair of long underwear. It’s not like they perform poorly in the comfort department; it’s more of a personal preference.
