Initial Thoughts

The first thing I noticed after opening the package was the soft, silk-like feel of the fabric. The material was so smooth out of the plastic that it almost felt buttery. I could already tell these shorts would feel velvety before I tried them on!

Moving onto the fit and style, they look like your typical lounge shorts. I measured the inseam to be about 6-7”, so the bottoms should rest above your knees. And in terms of features, the two front pockets feel deep enough to hold an oversized smartphone easily. The zippered back pocket would be nice for carrying cards or cash, but anything more significant may feel uncomfortable.

The color is a classic heather gray, consistent throughout the material. Although it’s not as light of a gray as I would have hoped, I honestly can’t complain. You can tell immediately that this shade of gray works with nearly any color top. And after checking myself out in the mirror, I might get another pair in olive. Still, I can’t get too far ahead of myself; I still need to wear them!

And before I finally try these on, it’s important to note that there were some loose threads in the waistband stitching. I’ve come to expect this with some Merino wool due to its difficulty to manufacture, so I just snipped off the threads and moved on with my day, but only after letting you know about it!

And finally, the time has come to try them on. And. They feel great. The waistband is snug but not restrictive, the drape rests evenly, and they are all-around comfortable. I can’t wait to put them to the test!

Three-Day Wear Test

At Merino Wool Gear, we always like to put the clothing we test through the wringer. So, we wear the gear for three days and sample some of the marketing claims from each brand. We want you to understand the good and the bad that come with each product we recommend.

Day One: The Comfort Test

At first, I was hoping to test these shorts in an athletic environment, but for some reason, I wasn’t feeling it today. So instead, when I woke up, I took a shower, threw these shorts on, and stayed in the house all day, which was beautiful. I have absolutely no regrets.

In fact, despite their higher price tag compared to the alternative, these Merino wool shorts are perfect for hanging around the house. The soft, elastic waistband doesn’t rub or chafe, and the drawstring holds up even when I run around the house. Heck, you could honestly wear them without anything underneath. Still, since I have a couple more days of testing, we’ll wear underwear for now.

Overall, after day one, I’m still wearing the shorts as I’m typing this, and they are still as comfortable as when I put them on initially. So, for that, they passed the comfort test so far. My new shorts and I are now off to bed.

Day Two: The Stress Test

After wearing these shorts to bed last night, I can officially say they passed the comfort test. They didn’t bother me one bit. Moreover, my sleep tracker said I got a 100% of my necessary rest, and that only sometimes happens (but don’t give the shorts too much credit).

The shorts held up better than I did during the run, which slowed to a walk-jog pace after the first mile. I was surprised they didn’t flop around or cause any underwear ride-up. Moreover, the shorts did provide a dry, comfortable microclimate. However, the temperatures were mild, so I wasn’t expecting to sweat too much.

Now, I did experience a few potential snags from bushes and vines along my route. These shorts performed well, but I still would be hesitant to wear them in a more rugged setting.

After day two, these shorts are starting to grow on me. Although, I’ll air them out while I sleep for safe measure.

Day Three: The Odor Test

After airing out for the night, the shorts still looked brand new. And after taking a few cautious sniffs, I can safely say the material is yet to have an odor. While this is 100% expected for pure Merino wool fabric, testing is still essential. So, let’s turn the testing up to the next level.

I thought the best way to test the odor was to sweat my butt off. I mean, they are “Warm Up” shorts! After wearing these shorts for a solid hour on the elliptical and another fifteen minutes on the Stairmaster, these shorts performed just fine. And when I finally got them off, they were still slightly damp, but with no smell!

So far, these Woolly Pro-Knit shorts can hold up to the rigors of my predominantly work-from-home lifestyle, but there is still one more test to go!

The Laundry Test

Even after three days of wear, judging the short’s durability is difficult. That’s why we perform The Laundry Test. We wash all our gear in a 15-year-old washer and dryer to see how it fits the washing and drying process.

Woolly has outlined their specific recommendations for washing this piece in the case of these Pro-Knit Warm Up shorts. And we will follow it as closely as possible for the best results. The recommended laundering steps are as follows:

• Use mild detergent
• Wash cold with similar colors
• Do not iron or bleach
• Flat dry or tumble dry low

So, after putting these shorts through the laundry (and flat drying), the 100% Merino wool fabric dried quickly and maintained the same comfort. However, there were two concerns in terms of the stitching. The first was the thread around the drawstring, which seemed to loosen after the wash. Moreover, there was a thread in the seam intersection near the crotch that frayed out. 

While we are accustomed to slight defects during the laundering process, these two blemishes are something to be apprehensive about. Now, I did wash these with a large load of laundry, so perhaps a zipper or button snagged the thread. However, take extra caution when laundering these shorts. What We Liked

After three days of wear and an interesting laundry test, I’m ready to lay out what we liked the most from these Woolly Pro-Knit Warm Up shorts.

Performance with Comfort

The overall performance and comfort are undoubtedly the best aspects of these Merino wool shorts. The fabric is comfy and non-restrictive, which helps manage sweat during high-intensity activities. Moreover, the elastic waistband is covered with Merino wool, so there is no itch or irritation. And the extra back pocket is a nice touch when storing your phone or a card.

And honestly, we wouldn’t expect anything less from Woolly as high-performing Merino wool “Foundationwear” is the niche in which they shine.

Excellent Versatility

If you took the time to read through our Three Day Wear Test, you might have noticed we wore these shorts in three distinct scenarios: lounging at home, hiking outside, and exercising at the gym. Alright, this one is me being picky, but the side pockets should be rotated slightly toward the front of the short. It’s not that they aren’t functional, but if you wear a shorter shirt, the pockets flap out around the hips. It could be a more flattering look, but it’s okay for now.

You become more accustomed to manufacturing defects when you’ve tested Merino wool clothing as long as we have. It’s common across the industry, and most brands have warranties to protect against them.

The first thing is first: yes, these look like a simple pair of sweatpants. But that’s actually what makes them so great. There isn’t any need for flash with this type of functionality. The wool/synthetic blend – in combination with the midweight thickness – provides ample temperature regulation. However, we don’t suggest wearing these pants in rugged environments as the fabric is prone to snagging and tearing.

In the realm of Merino wool pants, we mostly see base layers, joggers, and sweats. However, a few pieces break the mold, and the Wool & Prince Stretch Chino is one of them with its classic style. The versatile business casual design (which comes in both slim & straight fit) is perfect for those commuting to the office each day.

We’ll start first with the fabric. The midweight, 255-gsm material hits the sweet spot of thicknesses, so you can wear these pants all year round. Moreover, the wool/nylon/elastic blend provides extra durability and performance. However, the downside is that these pants don’t stretch as much as the name ‘Stretch Chino‘ would suggest. It’s not a significant issue, but just something to look out for.

Also, if you’re short – like me – you may want to look for a different pair of Merino pants. As of December 2021, Wool & Prince only has a leg length of 32″+ available. We’ll try to keep you updated if the size range changes.

But first, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: yes, these are pants. They may look like long underwear at first glance, but they function well as athletic pants (in public). Plus, there are pockets to carry your keys and phone at the gym even though you – we all – should go more.

And while many of these wool pants are blended with synthetics, these Naturwool loungers are 100%, Woolmark-certified Merino. It feels like a soft layer next to your skin but offers plenty of warmth as the fabric is 240 gsm. Still, the pure wool construction leaves us questioning the fabric’s long-term durability.

However, they transfer the power of Merino outdoor clothing to daily life with their Merino Foundation Wear. And the Woolly Longhaul Pant was one of their flagship pieces of gear.

Before we get into the specs, we’d love to share how these pants actually came to be. Woolly launched a Kickstarter campaign back in 2018 that raised over $200,000 to fund the production of these pants. Tt worked so well that they created two more Kickstarter campaigns for their all-Merino jackets.

Anyways, their Longhaul pants are designed for the on-the-go traveler. The lightweight 215-gsm fabric offers warmth while managing moisture well. Moreover, there is even a hidden, anti-theft zipper pocket in the back! The material itself is more professional-looking than other Merino alternatives. Therefore, you can wear them with more variety of outfits when you’re on the go.

However, the only real gripe we (specifically me) have is that regular cut doesn’t look great for shorter people. It’s a bit boxy, and since the sizing runs large, you have to get them hemmed.

The unique blend of Merino wool and organic cotton provides a sensational next-to-skin feel. Although, as Merino fans, we would love to see Ibex use a bit more Merino in these joggers. That is if it doesn’t affect the current comfort level.

Moreover, the fabric itself is not the only reason we love these comfy Merino wool pants. Ibex crafted the design of these joggers with the utmost precision. The pockets are functional, the taper is near-perfect, and plenty of room for movement with their self-titled ‘relaxed’ fit. Although, we would call them more of a regular-tapered fit as they are not very baggy.

Ibex notes in their sizing charts that for a medium & large, the inseam is 31-32″. Although, we have noticed that the inseam is a bit long, especially for shorter people. Again, it’s not a dealbreaker for us, but it would be nice if they offered more variety of inseam lengths.

As we mentioned before, Merino wool is a solid pants fabric, all the way from the gym to the office. And in our opinion, the best pair of Merino wool dress slacks is none other than the Ministry of Supply Velocity Pant. They are an ideal combination of comfort and professionalism that we don’t often see with other wool pants.

The premium Merino fabric is blended with polyester for a formal yet stylish look. Moreover, with Merino’s natural wrinkle resistance, you’ll always look good at work. Now, throw in the matching Merino suit jacket, and you’ve got a perfect, comfortable outfit for any black-tie events.

Although, we do have a few gripes about these pants that we’d like to note. Ministry of Supply that the fabric is a “4-way stretch woven,” yet there isn’t much stretch to these pants. And, while the non-wool Velocity pant is available in several colors, the Merino version only comes in black. Plus, they are a bit expensive, but what do you expect from a luxury piece of Merino wool gear?

Of course, these Smartwool 250 Bottoms aren’t your typical pair of Merino wool pants. We would classify them as base layers – something to be worn underneath something else. Still, these are the best thermal underwear on the market. And if you want to wear them as pants, you do you.

The fit itself is slim, with enough room for movement, but not overly baggy that you can’t layer overtop. Plus, Smartwool has recently updated its base layer design to be more performance-oriented. Overall, it’s a minimalist, simple design that focuses more on functionality as opposed to aesthetics. 

Anyways, these seemingly-basic wool ‘pants’ are actually jam-packed with features. The midweight, 100% Merino wool construction provides plenty of warmth, breathability, and durability. Although, if you’re planning on getting wet, you may want to look elsewhere for Merino wool long underwear. These aren’t the most quick-drying pair of the bunch.

Rugged and comfy? We know you don’t see those descriptive terms together very often. Yet, the Big Bil Merino wool cargo pants are just that. These heavy-duty, 80% Merino pants are for outdoor comfort, especially for extended periods. Combined with the olive drab color, they actually make a solid pair of hunting pants. 

Note: While we have deemed these Merino wool cargo pants for hunting, they can be used for all sorts of outdoor activities. In fact, they also make the perfect outdoor work pant – especially when you have to rake the leaves in near-freezing temperatures!

The outside texture of these pants is more felted than many of the other options. While this enhances your comfort levels, it’s also the reason that Big Bil recommends that they only are dry cleaned. So, make sure you factor in that cost when making your decision.

Still, we can’t think of a more rugged pair of Merino pants. And yes, they don’t stretch as much as we would like, but the fabric loosens up with use. Trust us when we say that you have to give them a shot (pun obviously intended).

As wool lovers, we have to talk about the material first. The Merino wool feels soft and luxurious, the nylon adds strength and quick-drying properties, and the little bit of spandex adds some stretch. However, we think that Icebreaker could use a higher ratio of wool in these pants and still get the same enhanced properties.

I can slip my phone into the zippered pocket without worrying about it falling out, too!

Although, unlike other Merino wool shorts, the shell of the Smartwool shorts is composed of waterproof polyester. It adds a bit of durability for heavy-use activities but doesn’t compromise the overall comfort. Basically, you get the ease of Merino wool and the strength of synthetics.

Personally, I like the 8″ inseam while working out. But if you prefer either a shorter inseam for running or a longer one for daily use, Smartwool has 5″ and 10″ versions in the same style.

Therefore, if I have to do laundry the night before a flight by the off-chance, I know these shorts will be good to go by the morning.

On the other hand (or should I say on the other leg), I wish these shorts would come in more color options than gray and black. Perhaps a light khaki or blue may be excellent. Also, the pockets are a bit shallow for my liking, so they aren’t ideal for carrying around a passport.

The 18.5-micron fiber diameter feels soft against your skin, especially if you’re a fan of going commando. Also, the versatile design and 8″ inseam allow you to wear them while running errands. You could say these are the goldilocks of lounge shorts; they’re just right!

However, since these are crafted with 100% Merino wool, they aren’t as durable as some other synthetic blends on our list. So, if you’re planning strenuous activities where your shorts might catch or tear, there are better options. Plus, they are only available in black or gray (as for now), and I’d love to see Woolly release more color options (I’m thinking a nice olive color).

Moreover, I love the front zippered pockets on the Merino Persist shorts. They allow plenty of room to store your phone, wallet, and even a few Cliff bars. However, there aren’t any back pockets. It’s not a deal-breaker, but you may need more storage space if you are out on a day hike with a small pack.
