What To Look For In A Merino Wool Tank Top

Before we get into each tank top, you must understand what to look for, mainly because Merino wool clothing can be tricky. We classify each piece into four categories – composition, weight, style, & features – so you can better gauge which shirt works best for you! Let’s elaborate a bit on each.

Merino Wool Composition

Merino Wool Composition

We always think that the more Merino wool in the fabric, the better. However, blending wool with some synthetics does help to add strength and durability. Some brands even incorporate spandex for more stretch and recovery (although Merino wool also has plenty of natural stretch).

When looking through these tanks, determine which activity you’ll use them for. If the fabric might snag or catch, you’ll want to stick with a mixture of Merino wool and synthetics. However, you can’t beat a pure Merino wool tank top for casual everyday wear.

Fabric Weight

Although Merino wool performs well in all seasons, fabric weight plays a prominent role in its success. Midweight and heavier fabrics (225+ gsm) work better in colder climates, while ultralight and lightweight materials (120-190 gsm) cool you down in warm conditions. Also, your temperature regulation level will be affected by your activity level. The more you work, the lighter the fabric needs to weigh. Check out the graph that better explains how activity level plays a role in temperature control.

Merino Wool Layering Chart From Minus33

As more these Merino wool tanks, we typically see fabric weights on the lighter side. Tops weighing 160-200 gsm are better for travel and everyday wear, while anything <150 gsm is best for moisture management, so high-movement activities or super hot climates. Although, the thinner the material, the more prone to tears. Just be mindful of the fabric while browsing these Merino wool tank tops so you don’t have to return them!

Fit & Style

Three Different Merino Wool Tank Top Styles

Which do you like better: track tanks or muscle tanks? Do you even know the difference?! While much of the style terminology varies among brands, please don’t get hung up on it. Focus on how the tank top fits (athletic, regular, etc.) and how it might work into your wardrobe. There are dozens of style, design, fit, and color combinations. So, there’s bound to be one that matches your style.

And if there isn’t, don’t worry. Contact us if you’re looking for a specific fit, style, color, etc.; we’re always happy to help you build your Merino wool closet!

Design Features

Usually, a tank top is just a tank top. Well, not with Merino wool. Brands add small design features throughout the top depending on which activity it’s best designated for. For example, pure Merino wool tanks may have tagless interiors or flatlock seams for comfort. Or if you’re wearing the tank out hiking, you may want offset shoulder seams to prevent strap chafing from your pack.

Merino Wool Tank Top Common Design Features

Look at the image above for some of Merino wool tank tops’ more common design features. Some we’ll discuss today have a few, others none at all. It’s simply about understanding where you’ll wear the tank and determining if the design features – or lack thereof – aid your performance.

Best Overall Merino Wool Tank Top

Icebreaker Men’s ZoneKnit™ Merino Tank

60% TENCEL™, 40% Merino Wool | 125 gsm | Regular fit | 2 styles | $$$$

Icebreaker Men's ZoneKnit™ Merino Tank Gray

Pros: Super ultralight & breathable | Top-notch performance features | Affordable with sale

Cons: Limited color options | Size down for next-to-skin fit

When we do these best Merino wool gear reviews, Icebreaker usually breaks into the top three for a good reason; they make some of the most innovative, technical, and stylish Merino wool apparel on the market! And their men’s ZoneKnit Merino Tank is no different. At first glance, it may look like a simple tank, but plenty of extraordinary performance features are hidden among this ordinary facade.

According to Icebreaker, their ZoneKnit™ design has “body mapping technology.” This is meant to regulate your core temperature – no matter the external temperature – so your body can perform optimally. The Cool-Lite™ fabric and back eyelet mesh ventilation allow airflow while wicking moisture away from your body and into the atmosphere. There are even offset shoulder seams, reducing friction and rubbing from backpack straps. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind performance tank top!

Still, there are two ‘cons‘ worth noting if you’re considering this top. For one, the fit isn’t as athletic as you may expect. So, if you want a tight next-to-skin layer, it’s best to size down. And two, this tee has limited size and color availability. Only the gray – and a unique geodetic pattern – are available for now. Perhaps Icebreaker releases more options as they often do when the seasons change. We’ll have to wait and see!

Overall, the Icebreaker ZoneKnit™ Tank is the pinnacle of fabric performance technology all wrapped up in a minimalist design. If you’re interested in getting one, check out the link below or head over to Icebreaker to see the entirety of their tee and tank collection.

Runner-Up: Best Merino Wool Tank

Smartwool Men’s Active Ultralite Tank

53% Merino, 47% TENCEL™ | 150 gsm | Athletic fit | 3 colors | $$$

Smartwool Men's Active Ultralite Tank Orange

Pros: Excellent temperature & moisture management | Only 3 oz. total | Technical elements for running

Cons: Not 100% abrasion resistant | Long hem may be cumbersome to some

Coming in as the runner-up – more for its purpose rather than its rank – is the Smartwool Active Ultralite tank. The material is a nearly 50-50 Merino-TENCEL™ blend, offering the best qualities of each fabric. You get the durability & moisture-wicking properties of the sustainable TENCEL™ and the comfort, temperature regulation, and odor resistance from the Merino wool. You really get the best of both worlds!

And, if you’re a daily runner, Smartwool has all the technical features you’re looking for to achieve your personal best. The ultralight fabric weight & fit are the best for moisture management and ventilation. Moreover, the soft feel of the fabric – in combination with the flatlock seams – help reduce chafing. There’s even a reflective element if you’re a late-night or early-morning jogger. It has everything you need to keep on pushing, day in and day out!

When considering these Merino wool tank tops, understand the Smartwool Active tank top is an excellent choice for those who don’t mind breaking a sweat. It may look just like a simple tank, but there are plenty of performance features for you to keep running along. And that’s all real runners ever want, right? To just keep running along.

Best Merino Wool Tank For The Gym

Woolly Men’s Track Tank

100% Merino wool | 150 gsm | Athletic fit | 6 colors | $$

Woolly Mens Merino Track Tank Black

Pros: Simple yet versatile design | Comfort features | Great color selection

Cons: Longterm durability concerns | Arm holes may feel wide for some

When it’s time to hit the gym, a Merino wool tank top makes an excellent training partner. It will help regulate your core temperature so you don’t overheat, and you can get 3-4 wears out of it before washing. That’s because Merino wool is odor-proof! So after a sweaty workout, give it some time to dry, and it should be ready for the next time you hit the gym. And whenever I exercise, one of the essentials of my gym bag is the Woolly track tank.

Editor’s Note: What’s the difference between a Merino wool track tank and a tank top? Well, nothing much except a more athletic fit. And track tanks typically have skinnier shoulder straps which provide a deeper scooped neckline. And if the armholes feel too large, Woolly offers all the different tee and tank top varieties. So, look at their Merino wool tank collection and pick which shirt design works best for you!

The Woolly track tank performs exceptionally well in the gym due to its unique wool-spandex blend, athletic fit, and natural fabric properties. Plus, with the skinny shoulder design, you’ll look great while doing curly in the mirror. Yet just be careful around sharp racks or old machines, as this fabric can catch and tear easily. Luckily, this isn’t as much an issue due to the tighter fit, but still an issue worth noting.

Finally, while we’ve crowned this tank the king of the gym, it can serve you throughout daily life. You can pair it with a light jacket or wear it to a beach party. And with six unique colors to choose from, there’s bound to be one that screams ‘you.’

Best Merino Wool Tank For Travel

Unbound Merino Tank Top

100% Merino wool | 165 gsm | Classic fit | 2 colors | $$$$

Unbound Merino Men's Tank Top

Pros: High-quality fabric | Quick-drying & packable | Versatile travel layer

Cons: Slightly Expensive | Limited color options

If you’re hopping from city to city, a Merino wool tank top can become an essential piece in your carry-on. Wear it on the beach, run, or under a sweater for warmth. It’s one of the few Swiss army knives of travel clothing. And when it comes to Merino wool travel gear, nobody does it better than Unbound Merino!

Their men’s tank top – and the rest of their travel collection – are a digital nomad’s wet dream. Comfy Merino wool clothing designed with no flashy logos, minimalistic yet publicly-acceptable styles, all in neutral, versatile colors (although this tank only comes in black & charcoal). All of their pieces are well-designed, odor-free, quick-drying, and wrinkle-resistant! The only thing this Unbound Merino tank top won’t do for you is check into your flight.

Still, all this quality and craftsmanship comes at a price. What did you expect? To get it for free?! Unbound Merino is one of the more expensive brands, but rightfully so. Everything I’ve tried from them has turned out to be great gear. I never regretted a penny, and this Merino wool tank top falls in the same boat.

Best Merino Wool Tank For Hiking

Ortovox 120 Fast Tec Mountain Shirt

85% Merino, 15% Nylon | 120 gsm | Athletic fit | 3 colors | $$$$

Ortovox 120 Fast Tec Mountain Shirt Green

Pros: Ultralight outdoor performance | Unique fabric paneling | Durable corespun material

Cons: Minimal versatility | Limited availability

If you’re an avid outdoor explorer, you may have heard of Ortovox before. Their outdoor gear is among the most technically designed clothing in the industry. And their Fast Tec Mountain shirt is no different. It’s the king of outdoor performance tanks!

And yes, this is the lightest-weight tee on our list. It’s only 120 gsm. That’s about a sheet-and-a-half of paper thick! Yet still, Ortovox takes fabric technology to the next level with the durable nylon core. Moreover, the unique fabric panel design gives aids in breathability. That way, combined, you get strength from synthetic, comfort & temperature regulation from Merino wool, and the ultimate outdoor performance tank from the overall design.

Although, due to the technical design, you may only want to wear this tank while hiking, climbing, or exploring the great outdoors. It looks out of place in daily life. But, if you don’t mind sticking out, be our guest; wear it everywhere you go!

Still, if you are a hardcore climber or spend every free moment in the backcountry, this technical Merino wool tank from Ortovox is worth the bill. You won’t have to worry about chafing, discomfort, or fabric tears. It will not only enhance your performance, but it may give you some peace of mind.

Best Sleeveless Merino Wool Shirt

Minus33 Woolverino Sleeveless Tank Top

84% Merino, 12% Nylon, 4% Spandex | 145 gsm | Regular fit | 2 colors | $$

Minus33 Woolverino Sleeveless Tank Top Light Gray

Pros: Excellent stretch & recovery | Unique technical features | Longterm durability

Cons: Not the most stylish | More of a layering piece

When you need a base layer but sleeves won’t do, Minus33 has you covered with the Woolverino sleeveless tank top. The ultralight (145 gsm) fabric has a bit of spandex, creating a comfortable stretch & recovery. The 17.5-micron Merino wool, combined with the standard fit, feels floaty and airy. Therefore, making it a great base layer for outdoor excursions, no matter the season!

Although, I do view this sleeveless tank as a base layer instead of a standalone layer. It works best under a heavier baselayer to increase your core temperature in more frigid conditions. It’s not the most stylish Merino wool tank we’ve talked about, but it’s not like it’s overly boxy. I could see myself throwing it on at the beach for extra sun protection (Minus33 notes it has a 20 UPF rating). Still, I prefer it as a cold-weather layering option more than any other potential use.

And one of the reasons for this is the technical features Minus33 incorporates into the tank design. The shoulder seams are offset to avoid chafing from backpack straps. Moreover, the tagless interior and flatlock seams prevent potential itching and annoyance, especially if your hiking pack is heavy. While these design features may appear simple at first glance, they show their value with experience.

Best Value Merino Wool Tanks

Sheep Run Lightweight Tank Top

100% Merino wool | 200 gsm | Standard fit | 11 colors | $

Pros: Fantastic price-to-quality ratio | Large color selection | Slightly heavier fabric than other tanks

Cons: Not great for extreme heat | Must launder with special care

As you’ve probably noticed, many of these Merino wool tank tops can be expensive. And as Macklemore once said, “Fifty dollars for a T-shirt, that’s just some ignorant-” you get the rest. But in our case, it’s $50 for a tank top. While the price is one of Merino wool’s disadvantages, some brands focus on making high-quality, affordable clothing, and Sheep Run is one of them. And their lightweight Merino wool tank top has the best price-to-quality ratio on this list.

The 100% superfine Austrian Merino wool fabric is just as soft as the higher-priced brands; it doesn’t have all those extra features, so it’s priced less. And since it’s just a darn comfy and stylish tank, I don’t feel bad spending money on it! That’s why it’s the best-value Merino tank of them all!

Also, I love that the ‘lightweight’ fabric is slightly thicker (200 gsm) than other performance tanks on this list. It’s more on the lighter side of midweight. So, while it may be too hot for peak summer activity, it’s great for everyday wear. And since there are currently 11 color options, you won’t feel handcuffed by the standard black-or-gray choices. If you can’t make up your mind, you can get two, and it will cost you cheaper than some of the other options we’ve discussed today!

What does ‘hike your own hike‘ mean to you?

I’m so bombarded with new gear, new trails, and new hiking advice that I often forget why I hike in the first place: freedom. Nature’s mirror is stunningly beautiful.

Out on the trails, I’m my best self. I’m the person I want to be for my family and friends. And we want you to be your best self on the trail, too. Merino wool helps us achieve this by making us comfortable and protecting us from the ever-changing elements.

So, we’ve compiled a list of the best Merino wool hiking shirts for men to aid you in finding your best outdoor self! There are three shirts for each season (twelve in total), so whichever trail you conquer, no matter the conditions, Merino wool has you covered.

Best Merino Wool Hiking Shirt For Summer

When you think of wool, you typically don’t think of summer. Instead, you may picture all those itchy wool sweaters from grandma’s house. Luckily, that’s not what Merino wool is about. It’s a high-tech performance fabric that showcases wool’s highly sought-after natural properties. And the best part about these properties is that they work in both cold and hot conditions. That’s why Merino wool is such a great fabric in the summer.

And, in terms of hot-weather hiking shirts, you can’t beat the breathability of Merino. Although this means it can be delicate, which is why many fabrics are corespun with sturdier synthetic fibers. This increases the strength and longevity of the shirt. Moreover, you’ll want something to provide adequate protection from the summer sun.

So when you’re looking at these summer hiking shirts, focus on fabric weight (for breathability), fabric composition (for durability), and UPF rating (for sun protection).

Icebreaker Merino Tech Lite II

100% Merino wool | 150 gsm | Regular fit | 9 colors | Price: $$$

Icebreaker Merino Tech Lite II Short Sleeve Shirt Olive

Pros: High-quality material | Free-flowing fit | Offset shoulder seams

Cons: Sizing may run large | Not the softest Merino wool

Long-distance backpackers will understand the importance of an odor-free hiking shirt. Pure Merino wool has no stench or funk, even after dozens of miles on the trail. And in terms of summer hiking shirts, our favorite smell-free, 100% Merino wool tee is the Icebreaker Tech Lite II.

In terms of performance, this Merino wool hiking tee is at the top of the class. The free-flowing fit is comfy and aids in moisture management. Moreover, design features like offset shoulder seams and a drop tail hem prevent unwanted backpack chafing. Although some users say this tee can be overly roomy, we view the fit as standard. Consult Icebreaker’s sizing charts if you have concerns about the fit.

Still, it’s not the softest fabric compared with the other hiking shirts on this list. Nevertheless, this adds to the material’s strength. Pure Merino can be delicate, and the 18.9-micron fibers are slightly more robust than softer 17.5-micron ones.

All in all, the Tech Lite II is a simple, versatile tee ready for any adventure. It does an excellent job of regulating your microclimate and won’t let you down when pulling 20+ mile days. And since they are just over 5 oz., you could pack an extra one for camp. Choose from any of the nine colors (plus seasonal releases) below!

Patagonia Capilene® Cool Merino Shirt

65% Merino, 35% recycled polyester | ~125 gsm | Slim fit | Price: $$$

Patagonia Cool Merino Capilene Crew in Light Blue

Pros: Enhanced breathability features | Functional base layer | Sustainably produced

Cons: Sleeve & hem length may be short | Lighter shades may be see-through

Hiking in the heat with long sleeves may seem counterintuitive. However, they actually keep you cooler – especially when they’re Merino wool. The material is soft, moisture-wicking, and much more. And one of the lightest, highest performing Merino wool baselayer/shirt/tee – or whatever you want to call it – is the Patagonia Capilene Cool Merino LS shirt.

This base layer’s enhanced breathability features set it apart from other Merino wool hiking shirts. It’s about as thin as possible without being tear-resistant (4.9 oz. weight) and has side vents for better airflow. Although it’s so thin, some lighter shades may be see-through. That’s not a big deal if you’re hiking in the middle of nowhere, but it could be a problem if you wear it around town.

Yet the eco-friendly materials make this shirt – and most of Patagonia’s products – stand apart. Merino wool, in itself, is sustainable. Yet Patagonia uses wool certified by the Responsible Wool Standard, an industry recognition focusing on the ethics of wool harvesting, land management, and animal welfare. Moreover, the Capilene material is just recycled polyester, added for strength and durability.

Finally, Patagonia has this Cool Merino shirt in short sleeves if you prefer. But if you haven’t yet hiked with long sleeves, try. Not only do you get the moisture management benefits, but you get the added protection from the sun and all those pesky bugs. So, if you’re interested, head to Patagonia to learn more about this Capilene Merino crew.

Ridge Merino Solstice Sun Hoodie

87% Merino, 13% Nylon | 145 gsm | Relaxed fit | 7 colors | Price: $$$

Mens Ridge Merino Wool Sun Hoodie Tan

Pros: Ultralight yet durable | 30+ UPF certified | Functional oversized hood

Cons: Sizing & color availability | Long sleeve due to thumbholes

You must worry about sun exposure if you’re hiking in the summer. You can go the sunscreen route, but you’ll have to reapply every few hours. Instead, try rocking a sun hoodie like the Ridge Merino Solstice. You get 30+ SPF protection as Merino wool is naturally UV-resistant. Think about it: sheep are in the sun all day, so their wool has to protect them from being burned. In other words, you get the same protection as the sheep!

And we get it; wearing a hoodie in the summer sun may not sound appealing. However, this Solstice hoodie is super ultralight. The fabric flows so freely that it barely feels like you’re wearing anything. Plus, the oversized hood drapes nicely over any ball cap or helmet if you’re climbing. Overall, it’s one of our favorite designs of all the Merino wool hoodies we’ve tried!

Although, in the world of Merino wool, ‘ultralight‘ and ‘free-flowing‘ often translate to rips and tears. Yet, Ridge Merino understands this challenge and uses (m)Force™ Technology – Merino wrapped around a strong nylon core – for extra strength. I have heavily used mine for over three years, and the cuffs have only slightly worn. Other than that, the longevity of this ultralight fabric defies the norm.

Finally, these Solstice hoodies tend to go fast, especially when seasonal colors are released. So, if you find a color you like and your size is available, get it before it’s gone!

Best Merino Wool Hiking Shirt For Fall

If you’re hiking in the fall, conditions can change instantly. You may start your hike on a clear, mild day, and then a cold front rolls in, pouring buckets. So, since your gear is the only thing protecting you from the unforgiving elements, it must keep you dry and warm.

The best thing you can do to manage your microclimate is to fine-tune your layering system. The standard lineup is a lightweight base layer, a pullover mid-layer like a fleece, and an ultralight puffer for insulation. Carrying a combination of these three will keep you protected down to frigid temps. Although, due to Merino wool’s warmth-to-weight properties, sometimes a midlayer can double as an overlayer and vice versa.

So, if you’re looking for a fall hiking shirt, focus on fabric weight (for temperature regulation & breathability) and fit (for versatility & layering).

Smartwool Merino 250 Base Layer Quarter Zip

100% Merino wool | 250 gsm | Slim fit | 12 colors | Price: $$$$

Smartwool Merino 250 Base Layer Quarter Zip Charcoal

Pros: Top-notch temperature regulation | High-performance features | Unique color block design

Cons: Initial itchiness may occur | Susceptible to snagging

Making a ‘Best Merino Wool‘ roundup is challenging without mentioning Smartwool. The sheer variety of Merino wool products they offer is astounding. And better yet, no matter the gear, you still get the same high-quality craftsmanship as always. Yet among all the new releases and specialized apparel, we can’t help but get back to the basics with Smartwool’s flagship 250 1/4 zip base layer.

The midweight, 100% Merino wool fabric hits the sweet spot regarding temperature regulation. It’s thick enough to keep you warm at freezing temperatures and thin enough to keep you dry while you sweat through the switchbacks. I like to call this 250 gsm weight the ‘Goldilocks‘ of fabric thicknesses. It’s not too hot or too cold. And feels just right!

Moreover, this base layer comes with tons of performance features. The flatlock seams and shoulder panels prevent any strap rub or chafing. And Smartwool has recently updated the fit of their classic thermal by making it slimmer. This allows for better layering and more next-to-skin comfort.

Finally, one unique aspect of the Smartwool 250 1/4-Zip is that it comes in a dozen unique patterns and designs. So, if you want something other than basic black – or a hood on your hiking shirt  you’re in luck. Click below to see if Smartwool has a color to match your style!

Wool & Prince Waffle Henley

78% Merino, 22% nylon | 270 gsm | Regular fit | 3 colors | Price: $$$$

Wool And Prince Waffle Henley Gray

Pros: High-quality fabric | Versatile style | Surprisingly breathable

Cons: Sleeves & Hem length may be long | Limited color selection

The problem with many hiking shirts is that they are hiking shirts. Their style isn’t necessarily acceptable for day-to-day activities. And since many of these shirts are expensive, you’ll want to get the most versatility from each garment. So, with all of that in mind, one piece of Merino wool gear that’s functional, fashionable, and ready for adventure is the Wool&Prince Waffle Henley.

The thing we love most about this shirt – and most Wool&Prince clothing – is the expert attention to detail. This shirt uses two strong nylon filaments coiled around a 17.5-micron Merino wool core. Moreover, the buttons add versatility to an already stylish piece. So, if it gets toasty on the trail, you can undo a few buttons for extra airflow and a touch of personal style.

Yet, even with a desirable style, the sizing proportions differ from what you would expect from this type of shirt. Some users have noted that the sleeve and hem lengths are longer than similar products of the same size. So, it’s best to check the Wool&Prince sizing charts before ordering. The only other real drawback is that this waffle henley comes in only three colors: black, gray, and olive.

To sum up, the Waffle Henley is a genuinely unique and high-performing shirt. The lattice-like structure maintains a warm and dry microclimate. At the same time, the nylon-wrapped provides the material strength needed for the great outdoors. And when you’ve finished your excursion, it will help you blend in at the closest pub!

Duckworth Men’s Powder Hoody

50% Merino, 30% acrylic, 20% polyester | 300 gsm | Relaxed fit | 6 colors | Price: $$$$

Duckworth Powder Hoody Blue

Pros: Excellent drape & design | Warmth without bulk | 100% sourced and manufactured in the USA

Cons: No hood adjustment | Sizing may run large

Many Merino wool brands source their raw material from Australia or New Zealand. Then, they send it to Asia for manufacturing, then finally to the shelves in the USA. Duckworth, however, keeps their entire supply chain in the USA. For this Powder Hoody, they source their wool from Rambouillet sheep (a close cousin of the Merino) from their own ranch in Dillon, Montana. Then, all the scouring, spinning, dying, knitting, and manufacturing are done within the USA. By keeping its whole supply within the country, Duckworth has better control of their manufacturing process. In the case of the Powder hoodie, this leads to one high-quality, unique piece of Merino Wool Gear.

This hoodie has such a raw feel but in a good way. The soft yet durable Powder fabric is “Duckworth’s version of a wool fleece.” It has a simple, minimalistic design that works well with outdoor clothing, whether wearing it as an outerlayer or super-cold-weather base layer. We’d love to see extra features like a hood drawstring or elastic cuffs, but that would detract from this sweatshirt’s chill vibe.

Finally, this hoody truly has a cult following. People love how it looks and feels, and I can’t blame them because I love mine, too! So if you’re ready to drink the Kool-Aid (there’s no going back), head over to Duckworth below!

Best Merino Wool Hiking Shirt For Winter

It takes a special breed of individual to venture into the cold, frigid backcountry. With threats of frostbite, you need reliable gear that keeps you warm. And as you probably know by now, Merino wool regulates your next-to-skin temperature to skin temperature, so you can go exploring in any conditions.

So, for Merino wool winter hiking gear, you really want to look into the fabric weight and/or wool construction. For example, Merino can be used as insulation in addition to the traditional knit fabric. If you’re looking for an underlayer, you don’t want anything too bulky that will have you looking like the kid from A Christmas Story. “I can’t put my arms down!”

Minus33 Yukon Expedition Crew

100% Merino wool | 400 gsm | Regular fit | 3 colors | Price: $$$$

Minus33 Yukon Expedition Heavyweight Merino Wool Base Layer Black

Pros: Ultimate cold-weather base layer | Moisture management properties | Big & tall sizes available

Cons: Only for freezing conditions | Launder with care

Canada’s Yukon territory (“The Klondike”) is a popular destination for winter explorers. From long-distance snowshoeing to cold-weather kayaking, there are plenty of outdoor activities for everyone. But, no matter your chosen sport, you must stay warm. Temperatures there can drop to double-digit negatives in an instant. And that’s where the Minus33 Yukon Expedition crew truly thrives.

This shirt is the warmest base layer, Merino wool or not. At 400 gsm, it’s about as thick as possible while still being able to rest smoothly underneath an outerlayer. Moreover, the smooth fabric, tagless interior, and flatlock seams add to the Yukon’s exceptional comfort. So, you get insane temperature regulation and a supersoft next-to-skin feel.

Editor’s Note: While Minus33 says you can tumble dry the Yukon crew on low heat, we suggest skipping the dryer altogether to avoid shrinkage. Just flat dry on a towel instead.

Also, Minus33 takes its customer’s feedback seriously. When I started Merino Wool Gear, the Yukon Expedition base layer only had one color (black) and your standard sizes S-2XL. Today, Minus33 offers this heavyweight thermal in three colors and several big & tall sizes. This continual growth and customer satisfaction level is why Minus33 is such a unique brand.

So, head to Minus33 before embarking on your next cold-weather adventure, and check out some of the best Merino wool winter gear! Finally, if you’re serious about this Yukon crew, go with the matching bottoms to complete the set. That way, thick, warm Merino wool protects every inch of your body.

Filson Crew Neck Guide Sweater

100% Merino wool | Heavyweight | Regular fit | 2 colors | Price: $$$$$+

Filson Heavyweight Merino Wool Guide Sweater Navy

Pros: High-quality craftsmanship | Heavy-duty knit construction | Water-repellent

Cons: Sizing discrepancies | Super expensive

Let’s get one thing out of the way: this sweater is super expensive. Like, more-than-a-car-payment expensive. Honestly, almost all of Filson’s gear is – you guessed it – expensive! But I can’t stress this enough: this guide sweater is worth it. The price tag may seem excessive, but you get what you pay for in the best way possible. Filson has some of the highest-quality craftsmanship in the industry and even uses 100% USA-sourced wool, which we love.

Besides the pure attention to detail, this guide sweater is our list’s warmest Merino wool hiking shirt. It’s even one of the highest-performing Merino wool sweaters overall. The tight, heavy knit is surprisingly breathable, even at 50 °F or more. Moreover, the dense weaving pattern improves durability (less pilling, snags, etc.) and water-repellency. The latter is exciting since the garment uses no synthetics, just pure, strong, and comfy Merino wool.

The classic, relaxed fit is functional and timeless. You can either wear it as the only outerlayer (suggested) or pair it with another jacket for more-than-enough warmth. It will always stay in style if you care for it correctly (dry clean only). You could even pass it on to future generations as an heirloom piece. Still, maintain the ribbed cuffs and hem since their structure is usually the first to fail.

In short, this is just one darn good piece of gear. Filson says it best: “Sure, we could make it lighter and not so hardy, but then it wouldn’t be a Filson Crewneck Guide Sweater.” Get yours below!

Ibex Wool Air Hoodie

Shell: 100% nylon | Insulation: 80% Merino, 20% polyester | Athletic fit | 5 colors | Price: $$$$$

Ibex Wool Aire Merino Wool Insulated Hoodie Blue and Orange

Pros: Warmth-to-weight ratio | Wide temperature range | Packs away small

Cons: Zipper durability | No cinch cord at waist

In addition to being a soft, knit fabric, did you know Merino wool can be used as jacket insulation? It’s in the same ‘warmth-to-weight‘ as down. Although, aside from the wishy-washy ethics of down harvesting, Merino wool has an advantage since it still maintains warmth while wet. If you have a down puffer that wets out, it’s just an overpriced trashbag until it dries completely. Merino wool is a better choice for packable puffers, and the Ibex Wool Aire Hoodie is one high-performing packable puffer

The proprietary Merino wool insulation works at temperatures ranging from cool summer nights to subzero winter mornings (depending on what you layer underneath). Ibex added features like the scuba-style hood and snug, athletic fit, contributing to the jacket’s warmth. At the same time, the elastic cuffs and hem do an adequate job of keeping everything in place. Although, we would love to see a cinch cord along the waist to protect against chilly drafts.

Finally, compared to backpacker favorites like the Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket, this Ibex Wool Aire Hoodie outperforms in many aspects. It weighs slightly less than the Nano Puff (11.375 oz. to 11.9 oz.) and has a higher insulation fill (80 grams to 60 grams). So, you truly get more warmth at less weight. Head on over to Ibex to check them out for yourself!

Best Merino Wool Hiking Shirt For Spring

When the snow melts, the fun begins. Venturing off into the woods on a spring hike is beautiful; the birds sing, the flowers bloom, and the sun peeks through the clouds. It’s one of my favorite times of the year.

Still, even during a pristine spring season, weather conditions can change quickly. And, as seasoned hikers will know, spring means wet. So, you’ll want to have gear that’s quick-drying and breathable. Moreover, You’ll want to carry versatile gear that performs well across various temperatures.

When checking out the best Merino wool hiking shirts for spring, consider the fabric construction (versatility) and fabric weight (temperature regulation). For the latter, you’ll want to look for something midweight or lower and focus on layering.

Woolx Essential Tee

85% Merino, 12% nylon, 3% spandex | 150 gsm | Regular fit | 5 colors | Price: $$$

Man wearing a yellow long sleeve Merino tee by Woolx

Pros: Extra comfort design features | Improved durability | Excellent summer base layer

Cons:  Sizing may run large | Sleeves may be short for taller people

When the cold winter months are behind you, and you’re ready to hit the trail again, don’t forget to pack this Woolx Essential tee. Coming in at 150 gsm, you’ll get plenty of airflow and breathability from this ultralight fabric. You can wear it as a standalone hiking shirt in warmer conditions during the day while still getting 10-15 °F extra warmth if you pair it with an overlayer at night. This long-sleeve tee will keep your next-to-skin microclimate dry and warm no matter what you wear overtop- even a sleeping bag.

As with much of Woolx’s clothing, the Essential tee has extra comfort features to make your early-season hike successful. The predominantly Merino wool fabric still has 3% spandex for more healthy stretch, while the raglan sleeves – as you should know by now – prevent chafing from shoulder straps. Woolx even added underarm gussets, promoting airflow and keeping your armpits nice and dry! Moreover, the extra addition of nylon improves durability, so, hopefully, you won’t tear the material if it gets snagged on a branch.

Finally, regarding sizing, some users say that the Essential tee runs large. Moreover, some note that the sleeves are long. Woolx has included the garment and body measurements in their size chart. They do as much as possible to ensure you can find the shirt that fits your body type.

Helly Hansen LIFA Merino Midweight 2-in-1 Hoodie

57% Merino, 43% propylene | 225 gsm | Athletic fit | 4 colors | Price: $$$

Many wearing navy helly hansen lifa Merino hoodie

Pros: 2-in-1 fabric technology | Hood fits snug | Additional comfort features

Cons: Manufacturing defects possible | Not completely odor-resistant

Helly-Hansen typically makes ski gear, but both ski and hiking gear share many of the same properties. They must provide warmth without bulk, protecting you from the elements while allowing room for movement. Moreover, with all this movement, they must be able to breathe. And even if this LIFA Merino midweight hoodie is designed for the slopes, it works just as well on the trail.

The secret to this base layer is its unique 2-in-1 LIFA Merino construction. The synthetic polypropylene interior wicks moisture away from the skin, keeping you dry, while the ZQ Merino exterior acts as a barrier to the environment, regulating your temperature. So, even if you’re trekking through cold and clammy conditions, this Merino hoodie will protect you.

Although the design is well-engineered, some users have noted minor flaws and defects in their hoodies. Some imperfections are purely aesthetic, which isn’t much of an issue. However, if there is a loose seam in a critical stitch, you may have durability problems in the future. So, if this concerns you, thoroughly inspect the shirt before ripping off the tags, or else Helly-Hansen, according to their return policy, only accepts returns in their original condition.

Finally, the last thing we love about this hoodie is the hood! It fits snugger than expected, which works well as an extra wind layer for an alpine trip. And, if you want you plan on doing some climbing or scrambling, you can easily fit a helmet on top. In other words, this Helly-Hansen base layer is ready for any adventure.

Meriwool Midweight Long Sleeve Thermal Shirt

100% Merino wool | 250 gsm | Regular fit | 8 colors | Price: $$

Pros: Top price-to-quality ratio | Ultrasoft next-to-skin feel | Tall sizes available

Cons: Neck shape and durability | Shrinking may occur

As you can probably tell by now, Merino wool hiking shirts can be expensive. Yet, suppose all you want is a minimal base layer without all the bells and whistles. In that case, this midweight thermal from Meriwool is an inexpensive alternative. You still get the added comfort and temperature regulation of 100% Merino wool shirts without a significant dent in your bank account!

And we get it; the term ‘value‘ often indicates a drop in quality, but Meriwool’s gear is different. Their affordability is one of the three pillars of their brand (comfort & performance being the other two). So even at a lower price, you still get clothing that keeps you warm and protected in the backcountry. And as any weathered backpacker knows: reliable, inexpensive gear is hard to come by.

Although there are some design aspects, like the swooped neck, that could be improved. Over time, the neckline may droop or crinkle without proper care. So, while Meriwool markets this product as dryer-safe, we suggest flat-drying on a towel instead. This will help prevent the fabric from deforming and shrinking.

Overall, if all you need is a trustworthy base layer, this Meriwool midweight thermal is your best bet. It’s just as comfortable and high-performing as some of the more expensive base layers we’ve tested, but still at the same quality. And that’s what Meriwool is all about.

We are all adjusting to the new normal, and isolation has been rampant over the past 18 months. So, I thought it would be nice to spread our wings and fly into something new: the best men’s Merino wool shirts for travel.

I’ll first go over why Merino wool is such a fantastic fabric for travel clothing and then dive into our top 10 favorite Merino wool travel shirts. Hopefully, there’s a piece of gear that piques your interest and reignites your eternal travel flame.

Because no matter how far you travel, Merino wool gear lets you experience the comfort of home.

Disclosure & Transparency: Merino Wool Gear DOES NOT sponsor products to maintain genuineness and authenticity. Yet as an affiliate member, we may earn a commission from qualifying purchases.

Why Is Merino Wool The Best Travel Fabric?

My first ever experience with Merino wool was a lightweight wool buff I used for an eight-country Eurotrip over ten years ago. So for the last decade, traveling and Merino wool have gone hand-in-hand for me.

The level of comfort, odor resistance, versatility, and performance of Merino wool gear makes it the top choice for weekend warriors and digital nomads worldwide!

So, let’s closely examine some of Merino’s top-notch travel properties. And hopefully – in combination with some of the Merino travel gear suggestions – you’ll be able to find a shirt that fits all your adventure needs.

Odor Resistance

No more layover stink. You know what I’m talking about. When you get to a new city, the first thing you should be doing is exploring, not showering. With Merino wool, your clothes will stay fresh all day long.

But why? Well, it has to do with Merino’s moisture properties. Basically, nasty odors from your skin get trapped in the moisture within the fabric, not the material itself. So when you’re on the road, you can go a solid week (or more) without smelling like the inside of a gym bag.

Still, just because your clothing doesn’t stink doesn’t mean you don’t too. Pack some travel wipes for crying out loud!

Comfort

In my not-so-humble opinion, Merino wool is the softest everyday fabric on the market, hands down. The ultrasoft next-to-skin feel is due to the fine, low-micron fibers. Plus, wool’s natural crimp provides both stretchiness and support, so your clothing moves when you do.

Merino Wool Thickness

And, people often ask: isn’t wool itchy? No, not Merino wool, at least. The fibers are so tiny that your skin doesn’t view them as irritants (unlike rough, traditional wool). And since wool fibers are composed of keratin – just like human hair – it’s improbable that you are allergic to it.

All in all, the comfort of Merino travel clothing truly makes it a cut above the rest. In other words, it feels like you’re wrapped in a cloud while you’re flying through the clouds.

Versatility

You may not think of Merino wool as the most fashionable of travel fabrics, but there are many styles to choose from. I usually like to travel with a couple of basic Merino tees and a fantastic wool sun hoodie (as you will learn soon). But there are polos, button-downs, base layers, and so many other types of Merino wool clothing that you can pack on your adventures.

The overarching moral is that Merino wool comes in all shapes, styles, sizes, colors, and patterns. It’s versatile enough to wear as a layering item or a standalone piece. Even some Merino wool travel shirts I’ll cover could be considered formalwear!

So, whichever your travel style, there’s a functional, versatile piece of Merino wool gear for you!

Unbound Merino

Editor’s Note: Although many Merino wool travel shirts claim to be wrinkle-resistant, that’s never 100% the case. Everything wrinkles, and with Merino, many lighter-weight shirts tend to wrinkle more. The best way to avoid this is to look for a heavier shirt or just use the military roll (or what I like to call the Chipotle Roll because burritos are delicious) while packing. Check out the steps above. Image adapted from Unbound Merino.

Performance

Finally, you truly can’t beat the performance of Merino wool clothing in the travel-sphere. Wool does an excellent job at regulating your body temperature. Therefore, you need less clothing to achieve the same level of protection.

In other words, traveling with Merino wool allows you to pack less to adventure more. What more could you want?

Travel Pro Tip: Merino wool is not as quick-drying as synthetic clothing, so always allow a couple hours for your laundry to dry on the road. I prefer flat-drying on a towel, but I’ve also been known to hang a travel clothesline on my hostel bunk from time to time.

Best Overall Men’s Merino Wool Travel Shirt

Unbound Merino Crew Neck T-Shirt

100% Merino | Lightweight (190 gsm) | 17.5 microns | Slim-to-Regular fit | Multiple Colors | $$$

Unbound Merino Crew Neck Tee

Pros: Literally designed for travel | Minimalist style | Ultrasoft fabric

Cons: Some user-reported shoulder seam issues | Sizing may run small

Made for travelers – by travelers – Unbound Merino flies in first-class on Travel Gear airlines. Okay, that was a lame attempt at humor, but you get the point: if you want Merino wool travel gear, you can’t go wrong with Unbound Merino.

And their crew-neck Merino tee is a must-have in any traveler’s kit.

The ultrasoft Merino is comfortable and odor-resistant! And while early versions of this tee had some seam irritation, I think Unbound has finally designed out that issue. It’s pretty cool to see the development of these travel tees over such a short amount of time. True innovation.

Yet, the thing we love most about the Unbound Merino crew neck is the simple, no-frills design. It’s a t-shirt. A d*mn comfortable t-shirt that you can wear anywhere, anytime. What you see is what you get. And you’ll get is one of the best Merino wool travel shirts on the market.

Runner-Up: Men’s Merino Travel Tee

Olivers Convoy Long Sleeve Tee

100% Merino | Lightweight (165 gsm) | 18.5 microns | Regular fit | Black or Gray | $$$

Olivers Long Sleeve Convoy Tee

Pros: Ultrasoft Merino fabric | Functional & stylish shoulder cut | Excellent breathability

Cons: Fabric tends to wrinkle under chest | Length a bit long

There’s something just so sleek and stylish about the Oliver’s Convoy LS Tee. The drape and cut are some of the best I’ve seen. Plus, the regular fit makes it a perfect standalone shirt or an integral part of any layering system.

And, how can I forget the ultrasoft, uber-comfortable, 100% Merino wool fabric? I mean, the material must be sourced from the best suppliers. I’d even venture to say it’s one of the softest tees on this list. But again, I’ve found that metric hard to define, so take it with a subjective grain of salt.

Although, suppose you’re deterred from the long-sleeves because you are more of a tropical traveler. In that case, you should know that the lightweight fabric works to regulate your body temperature. And in my experience, wearing Merino wool sleeves in hotter climates can help cool you down. Still, that’s a topic of debate for another time.

Instead, test out the long-sleeve convoy tee and let us know!

Most Versatile Merino Travel Shirt

Ridge Merino Men’s Solstice Hoodie

87% Merino, 13% Nylon | Ultralight (145 gsm) | 17.5 microns | Relaxed fit | Seasonal colors | $$$

Ridge Merino Solstice Hoodie

Pros: Cloud-like drape & feel | Oversized hood is versatile | Ultralight yet surprisingly durable

Cons: Arm length is long due to thumb holes | Slight wrinkles after several uses

If you’ve read our reviews before, you may know how much we love gear from Ridge Merino. They always have some of the best-fitting, high-quality wool apparel, all at a solid price. So, it’s only ‘fitting’ to include their Solstice Hoodie as our “Most Versatile” Merino wool travel shirt.

I know it sounds strange, but the Ridge Merino Solstice Hoodie is the swiss-army knife of travel shirts. Honestly, it’s the ‘key ‘to my travel capsule wardrobe. The oversize hood is an excellent eye cover for an airplane snooze. The ultralight fabric weighs next to nothing if it’s in your carry-on or worn as a base layer in chilly climates.

Plus, I can acceptably wear it anywhere. It’s got a bit of that high-end outdoor style that does not look out of place in an urban setting. Oh yeah, and it’s relatively affordable – unlike anything at the airport.

Anyways, I’m not going to dive into too many tech specs with this one. You only need to know that I never travel without my Solstice Hoodie. Period.

Best Merino Wool Button-Down

Western Rise Limitless Merino Button-Down

53% Merino, 47% Polyester | Lightweight (175 gsm) | Slim fit | Gray (light & dark) | $$$$

Western Rise Limitless Merino Button Down Shirt White

Pros: Classic yet casual style | Fantastic all-around performance | Packs down small

Cons: Wish there was more Merino wool | Limited color options

Western Rise knows that you may need more than a simple wool tee while traveling. They created this functional Limitless Merino wool button-down to cater to all your travel needs. The design is professional yet fashionable. And, you just can’t beat the comfort of Merino wool!

“Looks like an Oxford, is more comfortable than a t-shirt, and outperforms your activewear.”

Yet, if you want a 100% wool shirt, you’re out of luck with this one. The overall material construction is about 50-50 Merino-polyester. While this does help with the long-term durability, we tend to find it not as comfy as a pure wool button-down.

Still, the Western Rise Limitless Merino button-down gets the job done when you’re on the road. You won’t stink, you won’t wrinkle (as much), and your body temperature will stay regulated. Now, that’s all you can ask for in a travel shirt, right?

Best Merino Wool Polo For Travel

Woolx Summit Polo

85% Merino, 12% Nylon, 3% Spandex | Lightweight (150 gsm) | Slim fit | Black, Blue, & Tan | $$$

Woolx Summit Polo

Pros: Comfy raglan sleeve construction | Simple, classic style | Mix of performance & fashion

Cons: Attracts lint, pet hair, etc. | Sizing inconsistencies

Honestly, I’ve never been a fan of the casual business aesthetic. Perhaps it’s because I was forced to dress in bland-colored khakis and a navy polo for nearly a dozen years. Still, there are some situations where a t-shirt is just too informal, so that’s when I reach for my Woolx summit polo.

This slim-fit polo is crafted from ultralight 150-gsm fabric, so you don’t sweat when running to your gate. It’s like a performance tee with a collar, which is an underrated combination. Plus, since it comes in three distinct colors, there’s a style that’ll match any pair of work slacks. That way, I can look – and feel – good if I’m traveling for work.

Woolx has found the proper combination of long-term performance and style, especially for those always on the go. And when it comes to the fabric itself, I really like the overall durability. The 85% Merino blend is comfortable and stretchy, but the corespun synthetics add extra strength.

Best Merino Wool Shirt For Hot Climates

Icebreaker Cool-Lite Merino Sphere II Crew

60% TENCEL, 40% Merino | Featherweight (125 gsm) | Regular Fit | 8 colors | $$

Icebreaker Merino Sphere Crew Tee Light Gray

Pros: Breathable, ‘featherlight’ fabric | Offset shoulder seam = less chafing | Drop-tail hem

Cons: Material may be see-through | Fabric may wrinkle over time

If you’ve read our best Men’s Merino t-shirt review, you’ll know that the Icebreaker Tech-Lite tee topped our list. However, we think Icebreaker has a better t-shirt option for tropical travel: the Cool-Lite Merino Sphere crew.

Many ultralight Merino shirts have a thickness of at least 150 gsm. Yet the Icebreaker Cool-Lite tee is even more ultralight, coming in only 125 gsm. And sure, you may have long-term durability concerns (since we do too). Still, Icebreaker has an excellent warranty policy, and the fabric is corespun with TENCEL for extra strength (and sustainability). So, in reality, there’s not too much to worry about.

I find it a bit ironic that a brand named Icebreaker has one of the ‘coolest’ Merino wool tees out there. But that’s the thing about irony: it’s true! And if you like wearing sleeves in hot climates (like me), Icebreaker has a long-sleeve version, too.

Best Merino Wool Shirt For Cold Climates

Smartwool 250 Merino Base Layer Crew

100% Merino | Midweight (250 gsm) | Slim Fit | Multiple colors and patterns available | $$$$

Smartwool Men's 250 Baselayer Crew

Pros: Industry-leading performance | Engineered fit & updated features | Versatile design

Cons: Slightly more expensive than alternatives | Not suitable in warmer weather

In these review lists, I always return to the Smartwool 250 Merino base layer. It’s perfect for any cold-weather traveler as a layering piece and even a standalone shirt. I understand it sounds biased toward Smartwool, but after being in the Merino game for several years, I can say their products are legit.

The functional midweight baselayer is tight enough that a mid-layer won’t bunch but relaxed enough to be worn as an everyday shirt – especially in chillier climates. For example, if you throw on this shirt with a packable down jacket, you’ll be cozy in below-freezing temperatures.

Honestly, it’s my go-to utility layer when I’m backpacking, and the same performance qualities transfer to the travel world. And, since Smartwool consistently releases new colors and patterns, you may want to grab one before you get ‘frozen out ‘of a great deal!

Most Stylish Merino Wool Travel Shirt

Wool & Prince 130 Button-Down Shirt

100% Merino | Ultralight (130 gsm) | 17.5-18.5 Microns | Classic fit | 12+ styles | $$$$

Wool and Prince Button Down

Pros: Classic, professional look | Dozens of patterns | Multiple fabric thicknesses available

Cons: Fabric doesn’t ‘feel’ entirely durable | A bit more expensive than other options

You can still wear Merino wool even if you need to dress to the nines! A perfect example is this stylish button-up from Wool&Prince. You get the high-end luxury vibe plus the enhanced travel properties of Merino wool. I would even go on a limb and crown it the perfect wool button-down!

The one thing about Wool & Prince that makes them elite in the Merino world is their sheer selection of styles and fabric weights. Their classic Merino button-down comes in all shades of blue, gray, checkered, plaid, etc. Plus, you can get a button-down in various fabric thicknesses: 130 gsm, 170 gsm, 210 gsm, or blended with linen!

Think about it like this: there isn’t a professional outfit or classy look that can’t be achieved with one of these Wool & Prince Merino wool shirts.

And while I don’t pack mine on outdoor vacations, I always have one while city-hopping. In all honesty, it’s probably the best-looking piece of Merino wool travel gear that I own. And if you don’t want to take my word for it, check it out for yourself below!

Best Wool Shirt For Adventure Travel

Ibex 24-Hour Merino Wool Long Sleeve Crew

100% Merino | Lightweight (165 gsm) | 19.5 microns | Regular Fit | 5 Colors available | $$$

Ibex 24 Hour Long Sleeve Crew

Pros: Designed for all-around performance | Versatile layering | Fantastic moisture management

Cons: Need something thicker for freezing temps | Micron fibers could be finer

I love adventure travel. The thrill of exploring the outdoors in an unfamiliar country has always appealed to me. But one major issue I’ve always had is packing for the travel and adventure parts of the trip. Usually, that means two separate bags and lots of disorganization. However, I’ve learned that Merino wool serves both the travel and adventure roles during my trips. And one piece of gear that does this exceptionally well is the Ibex 24-hour Long-Sleeve Crew.

The reason is that I can wear the 24-hour crew for 24 hours! So, whether I’m killing time on a layover or jetting off for a foreign backpacking trip, I know I have a versatile, functional piece of gear for wherever the road leads me. It’s sort of like a safety blanket but much more comfortable.

The 24-hour long-sleeve crew is an essential piece for any one-bagger. So, I won’t bore you with the tech specs since I listed them above. Moreover, if you like the design but are looking for a different style, check out other Merino wool gear from Ibex.

Best Value Merino Wool Travel Shirt For Men

Merino.tech 100% Merino Wool Tee

100% Merino | Lightweight (165 gsm) | 17.5 microns | Athletic fit | Multiple colors | $

Pros: Excellent price-to-performance ratio | Surprisingly comfy fabric | Multiple colors available

Cons: Pilling experienced in laundry | Long-term durability concerns

Yes, I know some of these Merino wool travel shirts are pricey. Still, there is affordable gear out there without sacrificing quality. One of my favorite brands that fit this description is Merino.tech. And their basic Merino tee comes at a solid price, giving you just enough money to buy the seat with a bit of extra legroom.

Personally, I have not worn this tee since I have found alternative options. However, my wife loves the women’s Merino.tech tee, and I feel the men’s shirt is similar. The fabric is ultrasoft (17.5-micron fibers), and the lightweight 165-gsm material is breathable.

So, if this shirt is so great, why do I have it as a ‘value’ pick? Well, it’s because Merino.tech offers an excellent price point. And sure, I have long-term durability questions. But to travel on a budget, I don’t think you will find a better choice for an affordable Merino wool travel tee.

Final Note: Best Merino Wool Travel Shirts For Men

And that’s that; the top 10 men’s merino wool shirts for travel. From tees to polos, button-downs to sun hoodies, I think I’ve covered nearly every style you could want in a travel wardrobe. All so that you can find that one piece of Merino Wool Gear that genuinely fits your needs.

I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it! Honestly, it helped me itch my travel scratch – for at least another few months.

Why Wear A Merino Wool T-Shirt?

Out of all the t-shirt materials out there – cotton, polyester, nylon, and more – you may be wondering why Merino wool tees are so popular. Well, it’s not just because we created an entire website, as Merino wool’s high-performance properties make it one of the top t-shirt materials.

Let’s take a look at a few of them (click on each one to learn more).

It’s Incredibly Comfortable

Traditional wool diameter of approximately 40 microns (which is why it often feels itchy), while Merino wool has a fiber diameter of 20 microns or less. Therefore, your Merino tee will feel luxurious and reduce skin irritation.

Merino Has Excellent Moisture Control Properties

Merino wool keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It does this by controlling the water vapor next to your skin and regulating atmospheric moisture. On top of that, Merino’s natural crimp provides tiny air pockets for moisture to pass through, which also trap hot air.

It Doesn’t Stink!

Contrary to popular belief, sweat doesn’t stink. What makes you smelly is the bacteria that live on your skin. They digest the proteins in the sweat and emit a foul odor. These bacteria can sometimes find a home on your shirt fabric, making you smell even worse. But not with Merino wool.

The microstructure of Merino wool is not a suitable environment for bacteria to thrive and multiply. Thus, no matter how much you sweat, your shirt will stay odor-free all day!

Wool is Versatile

Many people think that Merino wool is a bit bland in regards to the fashionable aspect of clothing. With a rise in popularity outside the outdoor industry – and into the streetwear industry – Merino wool companies have been creating tee styles that fit multiple situations. Plus, if you don’t want to shell out a bunch of money just to use your t-shirt for one specific activity.

It’s More Durable Than You Think

One perceived issue with Merino wool is that strength and durability fall victim to comfort. But, that not exactly the case. In fact, Merino wool has one of the highest tensile strengths of all fabrics. Still, if you are worried about punctures or tears, search for Merino wool tees blended or spun with synthetic materials with an excellent durability rating.

Merino Wool Is Sustainable & Ethical

Merino sheep live off the land, they get sheared, and their coat grows back. The wool process in itself is entirely sustainable as compared to synthetics, which rely on petroleum. Also, wool is biodegradable, which helps to reduce our planet’s reliance on landfills.

Also, while many people question the ethics behind wool production, it’s actually very humane. There are committees, organizations, and companies that regulate the ethical treatment of sheep. If you have any ethical concerns or questions, you can check out our comprehensive ethics guide here.

The interlocking Merino knit, 150 GSM fabric is lightweight and feels super soft on the skin. Also, we love the athletic cut, as it hugs all the right parts of our body. Not to mention that it has excellent performance and versatility.

Unlike pure Merino wool t-shirts, the Tech Lite is 87% Merino spun around a 13% nylon core. Thus, you get all the benefits of wool, but with enhanced durability and longevity. Sure, it may be a little pricey, but as with all of Icebreaker’s clothing, this t-shirt is worth it!

As with the Tech Lite, the Journey Tee is blended with synthetics with (m)Force technology, improving the overall durability of the fabric. The cut is a bit relaxed but not too baggy. The one issue (if you can even call it that) that we’ve seen is that the shirt length is a bit long, which may be cumbersome if you’re on the shorter side.

The fit is pretty is standard, but the length may be too short if you are super tall. Also, if you’re not a fan of the crew neck, or you want to show off your chest hair, or Woolly offers the same t-shirt in a v-neck style. All of these shirts also come at a user-friendly price!

As the shirt is crafted from lush Merino wool, it offers an excellent next-to-skin feel. But, pure Merino does need to be cared for as it can be somewhat delicate. Make sure to follow proper washing instructions to prevent longevity issues.

Best Merino Wool T-Shirts For The Outdoors

Enjoying the great outdoors is one of life’s simple pleasures. The stillness and serenity of nature offer solace in an otherwise tumultuous world. Still, while you’re trekking into the backcountry, you are entirely exposed to the elements. You should be sporting clothing that offers the protection you need while reducing any irritation. In other words, Merino wool is perfect for any outdoor excursion.

Let’s take a look at the three essential buying considerations when searching for a Merino wool t-shirt for the outdoors. This way, you’ll be better able to experience nature’s beauty.

Outdoor Merino Tee Buying Considerations

Odor Resistance: Spending an extended stay in the backcountry? You’ll want your tee to stay odor-free. Look for shirts with higher Merino percentages and thinner fabric weights.

Moisture Control: A key component to staying warm in the outdoors is to control next-to-skin moisture. Look for thinner fabric weights for more breathability.

Durability: Twigs, branches, and rocks are prone to tear your shirt. As wool is not as durable as synthetics, look for blended fabrics to improve durability.

Ortovox Merino Rock’n’Wool Shirt

100% Merino wool | 155 gsm | 19 microns | Athletic fit | 4 Colors | Price: $$$$

Ortovox Rock N Wool Merino Tee Pacific Green

Pros: Excellent outdoor functionality | Cut & drape moves with body | Multi-color design

Cons: Not ideal for super hot conditions | Launder with care

We love the entire Ortovox Rock’n’Wool base layer collection, and this shirt is no different. The 100% Merino wool construction and fit offers great functionality as it moves with your body as you navigate the backcountry. While the 155 GSM, 19 Micron material is not the softest fabric on our list, it still offers plenty of comfort out on the trail.

The one aspect that sets this t-shirt apart from some others is the overall style and cut. When we slip it on, it just hugs all the right places. Plus, we love the color design of the one-sleeve. In the end, it’s the little things that make the Ortovox Rock’n’Wool tee that makes it one of the best Merino tees for the outdoors.

Black Diamond Men’s Rhythm Tech T-Shirt

57% Nylon, 43% Merino | 95 gsm | Relaxed fit | 2 colors | Price: $$$

Black Diamond Rythym Tee Mens Ultra Blue

Pros: Super ultralight fabric | Fantastic breathability | Great for high-performance activities

Cons: Durability concerns | Runs a bit small

If breathability is your top buying consideration, then the Rhythm Tech T-shirt is probably your best option. According to Black Diamond, this tee is the world’s lightest technical Merino t-shirt, coming in at only 95 GSM. For reference, it’s difficult to find any Merino tee with a fabric thickness of less than 135 GSM.

Using a near 50-50 blend of synthetic and Merino, the specialized NuYarn material dries five times faster than similar tees. Also, it stretches and moves with your body about 1/3 more than other options. The only concern is that the thinner fabric leaves us with apprehensive durability concerns. Still, overall, the Black Diamond Rhythm Tech T-Shirt is an outdoor clothing masterpiece.

Minus33 Algonquin Men’s Lightweight Wool Crew

100% Merino wool | 170 gsm | 17.5 microns | Standard fit | 10+ colors | Price: $$

Minus33 Algonquin Men's Lightweight Wool Crew Desert Sand

Pros: Soft & comfortable on the skin | Superb price-to-quality ratio | Great base layer garment

Cons: Sleeves are a bit long | User-reported longevity issues

View Minus33 Review & Sizing Charts

Pure Merino wool and pure comfort, the Minus33 Algonquin Crew is one of our favorite wool outdoor tees. The 170 GSM fabric is just the right weight to be used in 3-season conditions, and the 17.5-micron fibers are soft and itch-free. The only actual downside that we’ve seen is that the sleeves are a bit long for our liking, but again, this is a personal preference.

Just as with all of Minus33’s products, the Algonquin’s superiority is in the details. There is a tagless label and flatlock seams to reduce itch and irritation. The fit itself is pretty standard and relaxed, so if you want something more athletic, Minus33 suggests trying out their Woolverino T-shirt or just sizing down.

Meriwool Men’s Merino Wool Short Sleeve T-Shirt

100% Merino wool | 190 gsm | 16.5 microns | Regular fit | 5 colors | Price: $$

Pros: Fit offers room for movement | Excellent price point | Luxuriously soft

Cons: Fabric a bit thick for summer conditions | User-reported durability issues

View Meriwool Review & Sizing Charts

Quality meets affordability with the Men’s Meriwool Short Sleeve Tee. This t-shirt is excellent for all outdoor activities, especially in inclement conditions, as the 190 GSM offers an adequate degree of warmth. When you’re done on the trail, its versatility allows for everyday comfort, so you can even wear it on your commute or just around the house.

The thing we love most about the Meriwool tee is the supersoft 16.5-micron Merino fibers. It gives the shirt a luxurious feel but without the exorbitant price tag of similar products. Still, as it’s softer and more delicate than other fabrics, you have to be a bit more careful when taking care of it to improve longevity.

Smartwool Merino Sport 150 Tee

56% Merino, 44% Polyester | 150 gsm | Regular fit | 4 colors | Price: $$

Smartwool Merino 150 Sport Tee

Pros: Top-notch durability | Inexpensive | Enhanced breathability

Cons: Potential fit & cut issues | Sizing runs a bit large

View Smartwool Review & Sizing Charts

Smartwool is an excellent Merino wool brand, and their Merino Sport tee is a great transition piece for those looking to transfer their outdoor wardrobe to more wool-based products. The fit itself is standard and moves with your body as you are hiking up and down the trails. Also, the incorporation of polyester with the Merino increases the shirt’s overall durability, so you don’t have to worry about tears or holes.

Still, there have been user-reported comfort issues, and it appears that the sizing is a bit off. There is also some buzz that the Merino 150 Sport tee has recently been discontinued. However, these t-shirts are still available for purchase on Amazon and the Smartwool website for a relatively low price.

Best Merino Wool T-Shirts For Travel

Ah, the joy of traveling! I’ve learned more from city-hopping across Europe, experiencing local traditions in Africa, and exploring the vastness of Patagonia than I did during my formal education. While it’s clear that traveling has immense benefits, there is no questioning that it can be uncomfortable at times.

So, don’t add to your airport discomfort by skimping out on a poor-quality t-shirt. Go with Merino wool!

Although not all Merino t-shirts are created the same, so let’s go over the top three factors you should be looking for in a Merino wool t-shirt for travel.

Merino Wool Travel Tee Buying Considerations

Comfort: Multiple flights. Long layovers. Your tee shouldn’t add to the inherent discomfort of traveling. Look for shirts with higher wool content for better comfort.

Versatility: If you live out of a backpack, you probably don’t have much room for extra clothes. Make sure your tee looks good with all your planned outfits.

Odor Resistance: Don’t get stuck doing laundry when you should be embracing a new culture. Merino wool’s odor-proof properties are essential for a fresh travel experience.

Unbound Merino Crew Neck T-Shirt

100% Merino wool | 190 gsm | 17.5 microns | Regular fit | 7 colors | Price: $$$

Unbound Merino Crew Neck Tee

Pros: Designed specifically for travel | Extreme comfort | Excellent odor-resistance

Cons: User-reported seam irritation | Runs somewhat small

View Complete Unbound Merino Review

If you’re a frequent traveler, you’ve probably already heard of Unbound Merino. They craft clothing tailored to those that love to live out of a backpack while city-hopping across the globe. Their 100% Merino classic crew neck t-shirt is the perfect travel tee due to its enhanced comfort and odor-resistance.

We love the relaxed yet supportive cut of this Merino wool t-shirt, although the sizing tends to run a bit small. Some users have also reported seam irritation around the shoulders and the development of ‘bacon neck’ after several uses. While we have not experienced this issue, if you want to avoid it altogether, it may best to purchase their v-neck version instead.

Outlier Ultrafine Merino Cut One T-Shirt

100% Merino wool | 195 gsm | 17.5 microns | Classic fit | 8 colors | Price: $$$$

Outlier Ultrafine Merino Cut One T-Shirt

Pros: Ultrafine Merino Fibers | Fashionable cut & style | Extremely versatile

Cons: High price point | Fabric a bit thick for tropical travel

Fashionable, functional, and all-around chic, the Outlier Ultrafine Merino Cut One T-Shirt is genuinely a cut above the rest. The 100% Merino construction is ultrasoft (as the name would suggest). The 195 GSM fabric is a bit heavier than most of the other tees. The extra weight gives it a more protective feel, but we don’t suggest wearing it in super hot climates.

As with all of Outlier’s products, this t-shirt is probably the most stylish on our list. The fit is fine-tuned to move with your body but still offers support in all the right places. The biggest downside is that the Cut One t-shirt is uber-expensive, but if you’ve got some extra cash in the bank, you should definitely check it out.

Fjällräven Abisko Wool SS Mens

50% Merino / 50% Recycled Polyester | ~150 gsm | Athletic fit | 2 colors | Price: $$

Fjallraven Abisko Wool Tee

Pros: Great price-to-quality ratio | Durable & versatile | Quick-drying

Cons: Cut not for everyone | Limited color options

As a fan of European travel, you’d be hard-pressed to visit any Nordic country without spotting Fjällräven travel gear. They have had a long-standing tradition of blending sustainability with fashion, and their Abisko wool men’s t-shirt is no different. The 50/50 blend of Merino wool and recycled polyester extends both fabrics’ benefits while still being environmentally friendly.

The cut itself is form-fitting and relaxed, allowing for air circulation, enhancing the fabric’s thermoregulating properties. Still, the style is not for everyone. The only other downside we see is that there are currently only two color options available. Other than that, we wholeheartedly trust Fjällräven’s craftsmanship and quality with the Abisko Wool tee.

Proof 72-Hour Merino Tee

87% Merino / 13% Nylon | 160 – 190 gsm | 16.5 microns | Slim fit | 9 colors | Price: $$$

Proof 72 Hour Merino Tee

Pros: Comfortable athletic fit | Super-soft Merino | Synthetic-reinforced durability

Cons: User-reported longevity issues | Need to launder with care

If you wear a typical t-shirt for three days straight, you’d probably expect it to smell absolutely horrible. But, that’s not the case with the Proof 72-Hour Merino Tee from Huckberry. It’s designed to withstand the rigors of travel, hustling through airports, sprinting to the train, and even exploring new cities.

The athletic fit offers a wide range of versatility, and the incorporation of synthetic material improves the shirt’s overall durability. Yet the factor we love the most is the supersoft 16.5-micron fibers that have a fantastic next-to-skin feel. So, if you’re gearing up for your next big vacation, you should probably add the Proof 72-Hour Merino Tee to your packing list.

Olivers Convoy Tee

100% Merino wool | 165 gsm | 18.5 microns | Regular fit | 9 colors | Price: $$$

Olvers Convoy Tee

Pros: Soft & pure Merino fabric | Excellent neck & shoulder cut | Lightweight breathability

Cons: Some shoulder bunching | Length a bit long

100% Merino wool meets 100% performance with the Olivers Convoy Tee. We love the minimal neck and shoulder cut of this t-shirt but are not a massive fan of the exterior seams. However, they do allow for more comfort and reduced irritation. Also, since our tester is on the shorter side, we’ve seen that the length can be a bit long even though the shirt does fit true to size.

Overall though, the Olivers Convoy Tee offers plenty of breathability and functionality while traveling, hitting the gym, or just lounging around in your Airbnb. It’s truly versatile for any situation, which is why it rounds out our best merino tees for traveling.

Best Merino Tees For Everyday Wear

If you’re like me, then you probably wear Merino wool no matter the occasion. It’s perfect for city on the couch and binging the latest Netflix show, running to the grocery store, and even commuting to work!

Yet, many Merino wool tees are crafted for specific purposes like hiking or traveling. Therefore, not all t-shirts will work for all situations.

When researching your favorite Merino tees, you’ll want to keep three factors in mind: comfort, versatility, and durability. Let’s take a quick look at each buying consideration before reviewing the five best Merino wool t-shirts for everyday use.

Everyday Merino Wool Tee Key Considerations

Comfort: With a hectic daily schedule, you’ll want your Merino tee to keep you comfortable. Look for higher Merino percentages and lower micron thicknesses.

Versatility: You may wear your tee with a sweater, hoody, or just by itself. To improve versatility, understand the t-shirts cut and choose elemental colors.

Durability: You never know how rigorous your day maybe, so you should trust that your tee is up for any adventure. Look for blended fabrics to improve strength.

Woolx Endurance Men’s Merino Wool T-Shirt

85% Merino, 12% Nylon, 3% Spandex | 180 gsm | Athletic fit | 3 colors | Price: $$$

Woolx Endurance Tee

Pros: Synthetic-enhanced durability | Flatlock seams | Also great for fitness

Cons: May feel tight around waist | Limited color options

View Woolx Sizing Charts & Company Profile

If you’re looking for a great tee to rock on the couch or out on the trail, then the Woolx Endurance Men’s Merino Wool T-shirt may be the perfect garment for you. The shirt fabric is approximately 180 GSM, making it heavy enough for protection but still lightweight and breathable. Some users question the athletic cut, but we tend to enjoy a snugger fit.

All of WoolX’s gear is highly recognized in the industry. The qualities of this Merino tee embody the Endurance name two-fold. You will endure longer without washing the shirt since it doesn’t smell. Plus, the shirt will last longer because it is blended with durable synthetics. As WoolX states, “this shirt was built to endure everything you can throw at it.”

Duckworth Men’s Vapor Tee

38% Merino, 50% Polyester, 12% Bamboo | 150 gsm | Standard fit | 7 colors | Price: $$

Duckworth Vapor Tee

Pros: Great price-to-quality ratio | Lightweight & breathable | Excellent versatility

Cons: Shorter cut not for everyone | User-reported sizing issues

View Duckworth Sizing Charts & Company Profile

Performance and functionality meet the Duckworth Men’s Vapor Tee. Crafted from a proprietary blend of Merino wool, polyester, and bamboo, this quality t-shirt is perfect for any wool lover. It’s super lightweight, coming in between 130-150 GSM fabric weight, and will keep you fresh and dry (hence the vapor name), no matter the activity.

The heathered fabric and cut make the Vapor Tee unique, but some taller folks have stated that the length is a bit too short (we didn’t even notice). The one factor that sets the Vapor Tee, and all of Duckworth’s products apart, is that they source their wool only from Montana. That’s right, Merino in America. They create quality apparel in the USA without having to import their raw Merino from overseas. Thus, the cost savings gets passed onto you, the customer.

Icebreaker Anatomica Short Sleeve Crew

83% Merino, 12% Nylon, 5% Elastane | 150 gsm | Slim fit | 4 colors | Price: $$$

Icebreaker Merino Mens Anatomica Tee White

Pros: Corespun enhanced durability | Form-fitting yet flexible cut | Ultralight, breathable fabric

Cons: Sizing runs relatively small | User-reported initial itchiness

Icebreaker makes our list again with their Anatomica Short Sleeve Crew. This slim-fit Merino tee will keep you cool in the summer, warm in the winter, and stylish all year round. There are six colors available, mostly in natural earth tones, so it’s a staple in any wardrobe.

The Anatomica fabric is what makes this Icebreaker Merino T-Shirt a great pick. The corespun nylon blend increases overall durability and longevity, and the ultralight 150 GSM fabric is comfy and moves with you. Some users have reported that the sizing is a bit small, so make sure to check the size charts before purchasing.

If you are interested in more about the Icebreaker Anatomica fabric series, check out their size charts on their company profile.

Smartwool Everyday Exploration Henley T-Shirt

53% Merino, 39% Polyester, 8% Hemp | Lightweight | Standard fit | 4 colors | Price: $$

Smartwool Men's Merino Hemp Blend Short Sleeve Henley Dark Gray

Pros: Versatile style | Excellent multi-fabric durability | Lightweight & Breathable

Cons: Limited color options | Henley cut not for everyone

Are you looking for a little more style in your t-shirt collection? Give the Smartwool Everday Exploration Henley a try. The 1/4 button closure is exceptionally versatile. The regular fits go with almost any outfit (although currently it’s only available in navy). It’s a Merino tee that says, ‘I want to look nice but still feel comfortable.’

On top of comfort and versatility, this Merino henley tee is composed of environmentally-friendly fabrics. Both Merino wool and hemp are sustainable clothing materials. The incorporation of polyester into the blend helps improve overall durability. Basically, it’s an excellent piece for your closet and a great selection for the planet.

Helly-Hansen Men’s Graphic Merino Base Layer Tee

87% Merino, 13% Nylon | 150 gsm | Regular fit | 6 colors | Price: $$

Pros: Great fit & style | Enhanced corespun durability | Breathable, lightweight fabric

Cons: Fit runs tight | Need to launder with care

Breathable, lightweight, durable, comfortable; the Helly Hansen Merino Base Layer Tee has it all. The corespun construction allows for a longer wear life, while the 150 GSM fabric allows for better moisture-wicking and evaporation. Thus, you can stay dry and comfortable for years to come. The fit itself is a bit slim and fit, so if you are looking for a more draped cut, then this tee may not be best for you.

One significant difference compared to other Merino tees on this list is that this shirt has a minimalistic, artistic graphic. It features austere mountains and the Helly-Hansen logo prominently on the front, as they take pride in the shirts they make. Our take is if you’re willing to put your name on the front of a t-shirt, then you stand by the overall quality.

Best Merino Tees Under $50

There is no denying that Merino wool can be on the pricier side of the apparel world, mainly when you’re used to buying a three-pack of tees for only $10. I think Macklemore said it best: “Fifty dollars for a T-shirt, that’s just some ignorant b*tch sh*t.”

But what the Thrift Shop rapper fails to comprehend is that Merino wool is priced higher due to its proven performance and quality.

Still, there are a few Merino wool t-shirts out there that won’t cost you an entire shift. It’s important to sniff out the imposters, though. Let’s take a look at the three most crucial buying considerations when searching for an affordable Merino wool t-shirt.

Merino Wool Tees Under $50 Buying ConsiderationS

Price-to-Quality Ratio: Just because a shirt is priced low does not mean it’s made of cheap material. Check each company’s sourcing and view user reviews to make a decision.

Comfort: Fabric comfort tends to decrease with price, so look into the Merino wool fiber thickness (in Microns) to gauge potential comfort levels.

Durability: Lower-priced Merino tees often don’t last as long as the more luxurious ones. Research each brand and buy shirts blended with synthetic materials.

Merino.Tech Lightweight Base Layer T-Shirt

100% Merino wool | 165 gsm | 17.5 microns | Standard fit | 26 Colors (yes!) | Price: $

Pros: Best price-to-quality | Tons of colors | Breathable & lightweight

Cons: User-reported durability issues | Fit not for everyone

A quality Merino wool t-shirt does not have to cost you an arm and a leg. The Merino.Tech Lightweight Base Layer T-Shirt is exceptionally affordable but still maintains the luxurious properties of Merino wool. The 17.5-micron fibers and 165 GSM make the fabric soft and lightweight, perfect for city hopping, trail running, or just running errands.

As every infomercial every says: “But wait, that’s not all!” This Merino.Tech tee comes in 26 colors, so that way, you can add a few different shades to your wardrobe. Although some users have reported both sizing issues, always check the sizing charts before purchasing. Also, some people have said that there are durability concerns, but considering that Merino.Tech has a lifetime warranty on their products; we are pretty confident about their confidence in the durability department.

Merino Protect 100% Merino Wool T-Shirt

100% Merino wool | ~150 gsm | Relaxed fit | Season colors | Price: $

Pros: Versatile for everyday, travel, & outdoors | Soft fabric | Good price

Cons: Fit a bit ‘boxy’ | Good colors not always available

Suppose you don’t want to shell out a bunch of money for a high-end wool t-shirt but still want to experience the benefits of Merino. In that case, the Merino Protect t-shirt may be the best option for you. The breathable and odor-resistant fabric is excellent for any occasion, all at a price point that won’t put a dent in your bank account.

The Merino Protect tee has dozens of five-star customer reviews, and we feel like it’s a great t-shirt for those just dipping their toes into the Merino world. The only two issues we’ve seen – if you can call them that – is that the fit is a bit boxy, and the only available color is gray. Other than that, the Merino Protect Short Sleeve tee should be on your list.

Janus 100% Merino Wool Men’s T-Shirt

100% Merino wool | ~160 gsm | Athletic fit | Blue | Price: $

Pros: Comfortable athletic fit | Designed in Norway | Outer stitching improves comfort

Cons: Limited colors | Outside stitching not the most fashionable

Norwegian outdoor company Janus has created a unique line of Merino wool gear that they call Summerwool. As the fabric is naturally breathable and odor-resistant, you can wear this tee during any season. This t-shirt will keep you warm as a base layer in the winter but cool in the humid Scandinavian summers.

The Janus 100% Merino wool t-shirt is delightfully different. The outer stitching improves next-to-skin comfort but isn’t exactly the most fashionable as a standalone piece. Still, if you want to reap the benefits of Merino wool during your outdoor adventures – all while saving a little money – then this Janus tee may be your best bet.

Eizniz Merino Wool Crew T-Shirt

100% Merino wool | 170 gsm | Standard fit | 4 colors | Price: $

Pros: Breathable & odor-resistant | Multi-functional & versatile | Quality fabric

Cons: Standard fit a bit baggy | Prone to snags

Performance meets comfort with this Merino wool crew from Eizniz. The 170 GSM fabric is a bit thicker than some of the other tees on our list, providing a bit more durability. Also, the t-shirt construction offers minimal seam irritation and all-day comfort.

The main downside of this t-shirt is that it can fit a bit baggy. We’d even suggest that you size down for a tighter, more athletic fit. Overall, the high-performance and myriad of positive reviews show that Eizniz should be featured on the best Merino wool t-shirts under $50 list.

Sheep Run Men’s Merino Crew Neck T-Shirt

100% Merino wool | 160 – 220 gsm | Athletic fit | 8 colors | Price: $

Pros: Athletic & flexible cut | Great value | Extremely soft fabric

Cons: Sleeves are a bit long | Long shipping times

Made from 100% Australian Merino wool, this breathable Merino tee from Sheep Run is great for the gym or just running errands around town. It comes in two fabric thicknesses – 160 GSM and 220 GSM – so you can choose which one best suits your activity level.

Even though this Merino wool t-shirt is on the low-end of the price spectrum, it does not skimp on quality. Sheep Run is a well-established and trusted brand in the outdoor apparel industry. Still, the sleeves are a bit longer than we’d hope for in a t-shirt. Other than that, the Sheep Run Merino tee is a great budget option for those looking to shift their wardrobe to more woolen fabrics.
