As for the material, unlike other leggings we mentioned so far, the Smartwool 7/8 Sport uses a two-layer system. The interior lining comprises just over half of Merino wool. Not only does this feel super soft on your skin, but the smoothness also reduces chafing. On the other hand, a Nylon/Elastane exterior is crafted for added durability and breathability. Basically, it’s Woolly’s top-selling Merino legging – the one we ranked top overall – but in a shorts version, of course. It still has the same four-way stretch thanks to the 5% elastane blended into the 95% Merino fabric. Also, it is the same heavyweight thickness (320 gsm), which is excellent at regulating your body temperature. Except now, you are using the cooling power of Merino wool instead of the warming power. 

However, despite my love for these Woolly shorts (and much of their women’s Merino line), there are a few downsides that I would feel remiss to omit. Some users have reported that the 3-4″ inseam is too short, with some thinking they are too revealing. Personally, I don’t see this complaint in my experience, but it’s worth noting. Moreover, something I have experienced with these shorts is the lack of pockets! Come on, people; everyone needs pockets! 

Still, you can rock these yoga shorts for a 4th of July picnic or on a relaxing day at the beach. Thus, making them a versatile piece for any Merino-lover’s summer wardrobe. Note: Before we venture further, just know, the Kenai bottoms are the warmest of the warm. They are meant for frigid, sub-zero outdoor activities. So, if you’re in a more moderate climate, you may want to skip to the next pair.

Alright, back to these heavyweight, 100% Merino wool leggings. They are the quintessential base layer for mountaineers, ice climbers, and even backcountry skiers. In fact, that’s why they are called the “Kenai” leggings after the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. It’s a popular adventure area for all sorts of winter wilderness lovers who fish, kayak, sightsee, and even dog sled.

Alright, I know what you’re thinking. Shouldn’t Patagonia be a little bit higher on the list? Well, your judging tone aside, you’re probably right. It’s just that I couldn’t think of one category to put them in. However, I have one major issue with these Capilene® Air Bottoms: I can’t actually wear them as leggings.

Still, that’s not a knock on their quality. The Patagonia Women’s Capilene® Air Bottoms are more of an under-base layer, not a standalone garment. The waffle-like grid reminds me of old-school long johns, but it’s there to trap in pockets of heat to keep you warm. That’s why at only a lightweight 190 GSM, these leggings can protect you down to freezing temperatures.

Yet the reason we love these Patagonia Women’s Capilene® Air Bottoms is the brand’s commitment to sustainability. And yes, Patagonia has been a subject of criticism in the past. However, they still do more for the environment than most outdoor brands. They do things like using RWS-certified wool and recycled polyester in their fabric. Heck, they believe in transparency so much that they openly display the exact location the clothing was made. In the case of the Capilene® Air Bottoms, they were manufactured in Hong Kong’s Honrich Knitwear Factory. They believe in their people and their suppliers, which is why we believe in their products.

Although Patagonia’s Merino wool products have been cycled in the past, they nevertheless offer this fabulous pair of leggings for three-season adventurers. The Capilene® Air Bottoms make our list an honorable mention; however, as I mentioned before, it’s because they don’t fit one title. So, see which category they fit in for you!

I’ve been a big fan of Meriwool products since first diving into the Merino wool world. Something stood out to me in my initial brand research; it was their company values. Their website states that they design each piece with three factors in mind: comfort, performance, and affordability. And let me tell you, their women’s base layer leggings meet their high standards.

As for comfort, you really can’t beat the supersoft, 16.5-micron Merino fibers. They feel almost invisible on your skin and reduce any potential irritation. As for comfort from the elements, Meriwool has created three different fabric weight options to suit your needs.

There are 190-gsm, lightweight Merino leggings that are good for summer nights and transition seasons. Then, the ones pictured above, the midweight 250-gsm, are perfect for both leggings or a base layer. And then, there are the 400-gsm heavyweight leggings meant as a more standalone piece or winter base layer.

So, onto Meriwool’s next design factor: performance. Although the idea of performance may change from one person to another, I feel that these leggings embody the notion of performance through functionality. They may not be flashy (unless you get one of the striped ones), but they work as a solid base layer or standalone piece.

And onto the final factor, affordability. While the prices of the various fabric weights differ (and proportionally, at that), Meriwool legging’s price lies below the industry average. All without sacrificing on quality. And that’s the power of Merino wool clothing: comfort, performance, and affordability.

You may know Allbirds from their flagship Merino wool sneakers, but that’s not why we are geeking over them today. Instead, I want to talk to you about their functional, fashionable, and sustainable Natural Legging. Let’s take a closer look.

So, first and foremost, these are some of the most functional leggings on our list. They have extreme athletic performance and fantastic support from their finely-engineered construction. The outside seams reduce skin irritation and improve performance. At the same time, the wide waistband is supportive but blends nicely into the overall design.

When it comes to the fashion aspect of Merino leggings, Allbirds has to be on the activewear Mt. Rushmore. These leggings are offered in black and gray, but limited edition colors are released regularly. In other words, you can wear these leggings to the gym, to the store, to work, to the wilderness. Basically, anywhere leggings are acceptable (I wouldn’t suggest you wear them to a wedding, but you do you). 

Finally, what Allbirds does best: sustainability. These leggings are crafted from high-strength recycled materials, including 18% ZQ-certified Merino. But there’s more. Allbirds notes that these leggings are carbon neutral after purchasing carbon offsets, yet production alone is responsible for 14.5 kg CO2e. For reference, that the same carbon footprint as your exhaling breath for two weeks. Honestly, it’s not a lot, but Allbirds does their part to commit to the environment.

In summary, if you’re looking for a high-functioning, highly-fashionable, and highly-sustainable pair of Merino leggings, I think you should give Allbirds a shot.
