Let’s start with the 100% Merino wool fabric. It is soft and comfortable, and the 185 gsm thickness provides enough warmth down to freezing temperatures. Moreover, the design is slim-fitting but relaxed enough to move with you. Therefore, you won’t have anything to worry about if you’re out on the trail.

So, they created one of the most technical, comfortable hunting hoodies for anyone looking to take home a trophy buck (or at least stay comfortable while trying). And as mentioned on Sitka Gear’s website, this Merino hoodie is “silent, concealed, and deadly.”

Let’s start with the high-quality construction since that first drew me to this hunting apparel. The midweight, 17.5-micron Merino wool is soft to the touch, but the blended nylon improves overall strength. Plus, it’s even water repellent. The fabric is engineered to keep you warm and improve your performance, whether stalking a herd or perched in a tree stand.

Moreover, the real selling point of this Apex Hoody is its unique features. There is an easily deployable facemask for complete camouflage, not that you would need it as the subalpine pattern is plenty. Also, Sitka Gear has added fabric reinforcements in any joint for improved mobility and durability. Heck, they even added room for elbow pads. It’s like they really thought of everything.

However, the Apex Hoodie is expensive and probably the priciest piece of Merino wool apparel on this list. But, I wholeheartedly believe the price level is worth it (if not a bit low) for the high-quality features and engineered construction. I’ll be upfront here; I’m not a hardcore cyclist.

I enjoy a 10+ mile ride every few months, but I’m not rocking the spandex bibs. However, I always grab the Chrome Cobra 3.0 hoodie if the weather is cool. Why? Because it’s made from Merino wool, of course!

Contrary to the 100% Merino wool construction of the 2.0, the updated Cobra 2.0 is about a fifty-fifty split of wool and synthetics. While this isn’t the best blend for order resistance, it does improve overall breathability and weather resistance. Moreover, the relaxed fit makes it an excellent three-season outer layer (it’s a little too warm for summer temperatures).

Above all, the Duckworth Powder Hoody is unique because it’s manufactured – and sourced – all in the USA. Most companies purchase their wool from Australia or New Zealand in the Merino industry. However, Duckworth knows its customer base prefers homegrown Merino. So, they use wool harvested from Montana Helle Rambouillet sheep (a cousin of the Merino) in their products. It’s just as soft and high-performing as Merino, but with less fewer import fees. Therefore, Duckworth passes the savings on to you!

The thought of wearing a hoodie during the summer may sound unappealing. Still, the Ridge Merino Solstice Hoodie isn’t your typical sweatshirt. The ultralight, 145 GSM fabric is highly breathable and shields you from dangerous UV rays with a UPF rating of 30+. In all honesty, I wear mine on every backpacking trip to avoid packing a big bottle of sunscreen.

So, with such thin Merino fabric, you may think this hoodie isn’t durable. Trust me, I get it. But, that’s not the case. Ridge Merino uses an industry-leading corespun fabric construction to improve overall durability, which they call (m)Force Merino. In other words, the soft Merino wool is coiled around a stronger nylon fiber. Therefore, you get all the comfort of wool with the added strength of synthetics.

However, what sets the Solstice hoodie apart from the competitors is the relaxed, flowing fit. It’s one of the most comfortable, versatile constructions I’ve seen worn. And the drape is complemented nicely by the oversized hood, which you can easily fit over a hat (or even a climbing helmet).

Although, in my experience, this hoodie has a few downsides. Since I’m on the shorter side, I wish the hem length wasn’t as long. Plus, the sleeves are a bit long for my arms since there are thumbholes. Finally, after wearing it for several consecutive days the fabric started to wrinkle because it was so thin.

Still, I would choose this Ridge Merino ultralight sun hoodie over any other sun hoodie on the market. At an affordable price, you definitely should give it a try.

However, I couldn’t think of other categories to place the Woolly Men’s Merino Wool Henley Hoodie. And, if I left it off this list, I’d be doing you a disservice. Anyways, let’s take a look at this hybrid sweatshirt.

Unlike the other quarter-zip hoodies on this list, this Woolly sweatshirt has a three-button closure. I personally think this gives the hoodie a more fashionable, versatile look. For example, it doesn’t look like you will hike a 14er every time you wear it. And still, the improved style doesn’t sacrifice overall comfort. The 190 GSM lightweight fabric is soft and moisture-wicking but thick enough to be used as outerwear in mild conditions.

Moreover, as with all Woolly’s clothing, this henley hoodie is designed as Merino Foundation Wear. The founders of Woolly noticed a void in the Merino industry of casual, everyday wear. I haven’t tested this hoodie from Goodthreads, to be honest. I have plenty of Merino hoodies that I’m satisfied with, so I don’t truly need another one. But, if you want to experience the power of Merino wool without emptying your bank account, it may be your best option.

Still, “budget” doesn’t mean bad. Sure, there are higher-performing options that I’ve discussed, but you may not need a top-of-the-line hoodie for your everyday needs. The lightweight, 50/50 blend of Merino and acrylic provides ample warmth and breathability. Plus, the versatile cut is excellent for any activity.

And just because this hoodie is more fundamental than the rest doesn’t mean that it lacks valuable features. There is a two-way zipper, kangaroo pockets, and ribbed cuffs, so your sleeves don’t flop around. It may not be the cream of the crop, but it still performs well.
